Sterlite Grid completes India's First Ultra Mega Power Transmission Project

Sterlite Grid commissions two lines and two substations of the Bhopal – Dhule Transmission project

Enables Northern region to import surplus power from North-Eastern & Eastern Regions

Sterlite Grid Limited (SGL) announced another milestone achievement with the successful commissioning of two lines and two substations of Bhopal Dhule Transmission Company Ltd. (BDTCL). BDTCL is a wholly owned special purpose vehicle of SGL and is executing a set of transmission lines and substations for the strengthening of the national grid. The company commissioned and put into operation two 765 kV Substations each having capacity of 3000 MW at Bhopal and Dhule and 765kV single circuit transmission lines connecting Bhopal to Indore and Dhule to Aurangabad.

Sterlite Grid Limited, a subsidiary of Sterlite Technologies Limited, announced a major milestone with the successful commissioning of India's first Ultra Mega Transmission Project. The first line in this project connecting Purnea and Bihar Sharif was commissioned in September 2013, which was the first 400 KV line to cross the river Ganges since Independence. The second line which is about 225km long connects Bongaigaon in Assam to Siliguri in West Bengal. The 400 KV double-circuit quad transmission line was commissioned today making the East-North Interconnection Company Ltd. (ENICL) fully operational. ENICL project transmission lines were identified as one of the highest priority lines by Power System Operation Corporation Limited (POSOCO) as they provide critical connectivity for transfer of power from the power plants in the North Eastern (NE) region. Also, this project will address the critical issue of power shortfall during non-monsoon months bringing significant relief to the residents of Assam. Transmission lines in this project pass through some of the most difficult terrains in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam. The construction of these lines were completed by overcoming several challenges including natural calamities like floods & earthquakes, crossing of large rivers such as Ganges, Teesta, Kosi, etc., riots in Kokrajhar and right-of-way hurdles.

This network will facilitate the transfer of upto 5000MW of electricity from the coal-belt in the east, to the energy hungry regions of western and northern India. This network will also provide energy stability to the industrial belts of Indore, Dewas and Aurangabad. Sterlite was able to commission these lines and substations in record-time despite severe right-of-way issues and tremendous delays in forest clearances. To overcome these challenges and to expedite the project execution, Sterlite has introduced helicopter stringing for the first time in India. The commissioned parts of the project represent 62% of the total tariff of the BDTCL project. The balance elements of this project are in advanced stages of completion and will be commissioned in the coming months.

Sterlite Technologies reports Q2 EBITDA growth of 14% ….Begins Q3 with an all-time high order book of Rs. 4,900 Crores Let's take a look through the key highlights in the business of financial performance and the industry outlook for each of the business segments for quarter ended September 30, 2014.

Financial highlights for Q2, FY 14-15 • Revenues of Rs. 592 Crores and EBITDA at Rs. 81 Crores both showing positive growth over the last quarter.

• Telecom business revenues were at Rs. 287 Crores, with 26% EBITDA margin for the quarter. • Power business is showing signs of revival with Q2 revenues at Rs. 287 Crores up 25% Q-o-Q but still remain below historic averages. • The order book stands at Rs. 4,900 Crores split fairly evenly between the Telecom and Power Business.

Business Highlights • In the Telecom segment, our Brazil JV became operational during the quarter and we recorded the first supplies from that facility to the growing LATAM market .• We have signed a Joint Venture agreement with VISCAS Corporation, Japan, who will invest in our existing power cable facilities for manufacturing HV/EHV cables in India. • In the infrastructure segment, one of the lines for the BDTCL (Bhopal Dhule Transmission Company ltd.) and the Bhopal substation were charged and have become operational. The second line in the ENICL (East North Interconnection Company Ltd.) is nearing completion and is expected to start generating revenues soon.

• We added new accounts in the international markets by securing orders from a major telecom operator in the LATAM market, and repeat orders from some of the key accounts in the Middle East region. • The Power segment showed signs of picking up with increase in domestic activity as well as creating access to new geographies in Africa and Europe for OPGW and Overhead T&D Conductors. • With the increasing renewable energy focus across the country, Sterlite is adding certain key renewable energy customers in India and abroad.

Challenges in cable deployment in optical networks There are two major challenges in cable deployment in high capacity optical networks – limited space in distribution network and tighter bends in subscriber loop.

Optical fiber is used in all modern optical communications including long-haul, regional, access, and FTTX networks. An optical fiber is made up of three layers, namely, core, cladding, and coating. Light is guided down the center of the fiber called the "core". The core is surrounded by an optical material called the "cladding" that contains the light in the core using an optical phenomenon called "total internal reflection." The fiber is coated by a buffer layer that protects it from moisture and physical damage. The buffer or “coating” is what one strips off the fiber for termination or splicing. More protection is provided by the cable which has the fibers and strength members inside an outer protective covering called a "jacket" or a "sheath." Glass cladding and outer coating diameter are standardized to 125 µm and 250 µm respectively in various international standards and recommendations. Standardization of these two critical dimensions of silica glass optical fiber has ensured-compatibility between optical networks across the globe. Currently, single mode optical fiber with a reduced 200 µm coating diameter and 125 µm cladding diameter is

commercially available. The 125 µm cladding diameter ensures backward compatibility with existing optical network. Fig. 1 shows a comparison between 250 µm and 200 µm coated fiber. This reduced diameter optical fiber opens up options for producing cable with more compact designs allowing more penetration depth in access and FTTX networks. Although high fiber count cable is a solution to handle large volume of information, this option is not always suitable due to limited space in installed ducts. Installation of new ducts is an expensive & time consuming operation and to get right of way approval from the government & other local bodies is a tedious task too. At present, successful penetration of optical fibers into the local distribution networks depends on the development of small, flexible, lightweight and cost effective cables. In addition, cable blowing distances can be vastly increased using smaller and lightweight cables reducing deployment costs. Therefore, reduced diameter cables called ‘micro cables’ have become popular during duct and cable installation. Compact cable design can be achieved by increasing fiber packing density, and reducing size of the cable elements and fiber. A significant improvement in fiber density in optical cables can be achieved by using bend insensitive 200 micron optical fibers. Although this type of design has higher packing density, it can result in higher optical loss due to micro-bending effect. Use of bend improved ITU-T G.657 category fibers with micro-bend resistant coating reduces micro-bend loss and helps to achieve targeted cable attenuation.

Compatibility of 200 micron fiber In the 200 micron fiber, diameter of the coating layers is reduced in comparison to conventional fiber whereas diameter and other characteristics of glass cladding remain same. In the field, 200 micron fiber works well with the existing tools and practices during stripping and splicing. Once coating is stripped out, cladding diameter is 125 micron which is same as conventional 250 microns Single Mode Fiber (SMF); therefore cleaving and fusion splicing can be performed with the same tools. The splice losses in 200 micron fibers are also well below ITU requirement of

maximum splice loss. This fiber has little impact on single fiber connectors as fiber is up-jacketed before connectorization. However, use of 200 micron fiber in ribbon structure is currently under study. Outer coating diameter decides spacing between two adjacent fibers in a ribbon structure and thus effectiveness of mass fusion splicing. Therefore, if splicing to existing 250 micron ribbon cables is a requirement, the ribbon structure of 200 micron fiber with the spacing equal to 250 micron ribbon is needed. Sterlite’s 200 micron fiber are fully backward compatible with existing fibers, and other reliability parameters controlling fiber life time like proof-test level, dynamic fatigue (Nd), tensile strength of both un-aged & aged fibers, and change in attenuation due to environmental aging, etc. meet the requirement of IEC 60793-2-50 standard. Use of next generation coating provides the same reliability level even after reduction of coating diameter. Bend improved single mode optical fiber with reduced coating diameter of 200 micron fiber is compatible with existing 250 micron fiber in optical networks and provides 38% lesser cross-section area allowing more compact micro cable designs. Sterlite’s MICRO BOW-LITE™ and MICRO BOW-LITE™ (E) are 200 micron ITU-T G.657.A1 and G.657.A2/B2 category fiber respectively and provide a novel and reliable solution to tighter bends and limited duct space frequently encountered in real-life network deployments.

Sterlite's Optical Fiber in Wind Power Generation About the Customer Hero Future Energies (HFE), a part of the US$ 5.6 billion Hero Group, is a Renewable Energies Company generating power by deploying best-in-class Green Technologies. Operational since 2012 in the field of generation and distribution of renewable energies, HFE carries legacy of The Hero Group; a strategic decision of the Group to enter the domain of power generation from clean and non-polluting sources of energy. The company commissioned its pilot project of 37.5 MW in Rajasthan, India in 2013 and is also setting up 5MW wind power plant in Satara, India as a part of their plans to develop over 1 GW+ of renewable energy assets by 2016.

Sterlite Tech Foundation in partnership with Jnana Prabodhini launched a women empowerment centre in September 2014 for the empowerment of women in Velhe Taluka. The project aptly titled Jeevan Jyoti aims to empower women and make them financially, socially and psychologically independent. The centre is a holistic development centre with classroom trainings, workshops, practical labs, library, sports ground, health centre etc. This project aims to empower women by training them under various skill development programs. Here is a brief of all the programs. • Home Nursing: A three month vocational training program for girls who seek to work at various homes in cities for taking care of geriatric patients, baby care or care of bed ridden patients. They are equipped with the knowledge of basics of human body, nursing art, geriatric care, post natal and baby care and management of bed ridden patients. They mostly serve as patient assistants. • Assistant Nursing: A twelve month intensive nursing program which comprises of 6 months of classroom training and 6 months of practical internship with the attached hospital. This program creates junior or assistant nurses who work at various healthcare set ups including multi specialty hospitals, clinics, community health center or any other health care set up. These students have a basic educational background of 9th pass and above. The students are equipped with the detailed knowledge of

human body and nursing art along with pre and postoperative care. The program aims primarily at educating the girls about their own body and environment and how to keep themselves and the community healthy. They work as brand ambassadors of health in their own community/village. This kind of a program is also helping to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of nurses in urban and rural India. These assistant nurses are of great help to the doctors and paramedic teams. They also work as community health workers for the care of women and children. • Tailoring: A six months training program in the basics of tailoring and stitching various dresses in order to make the women financially independent. The women learn the art of stitching and are trained to a level from where they start their own tailoring shop or work at a textile factory to earn a livelihood and get a respectful position. • Computer Literacy: A six months training program for basics of computer science teaching the school/college students/dropouts the basics of Computer including MS office package. The program aims to enable the students with the skills required to operate a computer independently, work as a clerk/data entry operator or pursue higher education in computer science. Futurecom is the largest and most qualified Telecom, IT and Internet event in Latin America. It was held from 13th to the 16th October 2014 at the Transamerica Expo Center in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Trade Show showcased products like Communication Servers, Open Touch Converged Multimedia Communications Suite, Telephone Table, Mobile Phones, Management services, Mobility, Unified Communications, Visual Communications, and Contact Center etc. in the Industrial Products.

Two activists who fight for the rights of children were conferred the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize. Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai along with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian activist were the chosen ones for the prestigious award. Satyarthi is the founder and head of the Global March Against Child Labour, a large conglomerate of aid groups, trade unions, and other activists working to rescue children from forced labour and other economic exploitation, and to ensure they receive education. Yousafzai became a global icon in 2012, when a Taliban gunman boarded her school bus and shot her in the head in an attempted assassination. (Thursday was the second anniversary of that incident.) Just 15 years old, she was targeted because she had written for the BBC about life under the Taliban, and in particular, highlighted their attempts to bar girls and women from attending school. She survived the shooting (though she continues to have a fatwa against her) and has gone on to become an International spokesperson for childhood education and a symbol of the struggle against Islamic extremism. Now 17, she is the youngest Nobel laureate ever, and the first to be born in Pakistan. Satyarthi is India's fifth laureate.

BEYOND READING We always look for books which are not just entertaining to read, but help us evolve as well. Not every book matches that criterion. Keeping that in mind, we bring you a couple of book reviews which will help you go a step beyond reading.

The Leadership Moment: Nine True Stories of Triumph and Disaster and Their Lessons for Us All -Micheal Useem To prove their various points, most books on business leadership focus strictly on either a series of standard, contemporary corporate illustrations or a single nontraditional model (such as a specific historic personality or a classic manuscript such as the Tao Te Ching). But Michael Useem, director of the Center for Leadership at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, has long used poignant real-life examples of people facing their "moments of truth"--regardless of the setting--to teach students how best to perform under the pressures they will face in the business world. In The Leadership Moment: Nine True Stories of Triumph and Disaster and Their Lessons for Us All, Useem presents some of these surprisingly effective profiles to show how others have responded when push truly comes to shove. Among them are: the story of Roy Vagelos championing an unprofitable drug that ultimately wiped out a debilitating disease in Africa; how flight director Eugene Kranz worked calmly and efficiently to return the endangered Apollo 13 astronauts safely back to Earth; and a look at Arlene Blum's pioneering all-woman ascent of the 26,545-foot Himalayan peak Annapurna in 1978.

Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive -Harvey B. Mackay This is a great book, whether you're an MBA or just someone trying to get an advantage in everyday life. Harvey Mackay's lessons are to be treasured--he was way ahead of the curve in the mid-1980s. It may be hard to appreciate this today because some of the advice isn't fresh anymore: we all have phones in our cars and we all use answering machines to screen calls and we all take notes on the run on little portable recorders. --Well, many of us do, at any rate. Hardly revolutionary advice anymore, but that's only because we listened to Harvey in the first place. Some of the chapters contain gold that will always be valuable, however. One of my favorites involves the phrase "Dusseldorf passes." I won't spoil it for the unread, but I will say the lesson from that chapter is one everyone should take with them through life. It will save you a lot of money and regret. And the Mackay hiring process. So thorough it seems to border on the obsurd, but the more I work at various companies the more I wish all businesses were as picky about acquiring workers. Harvey shows you that even "lowly" positions such as the receptionist or secretary are among your company's most critical, for 99% of your customers will get their first impression of your company-and in some cases the *only* impression of your company-through this crucial individual. Yet many companies get some 18-year-old part-timer to answer the phones and file valuable company documents--*and they're proud of this cost-cutting maneuver!* They consider this smart management. Harvey explains why this is actually a very dumb move. He also shows you how to get "impossible" tickets to the big game and how to get a reservation at virtually any hotel, even ones that are "completely booked." And no, these are not devious ways. They're just common sense, actually. Whether you're an ambitious manager at a Fortune 500 company or an owner of a small businesses on the corner, this book has nuggets. So grab it. And then read the other books Harvey Mackay has written. While they didn't have the freshness or the impact of this first one (is that possible?) they are still well worth your time.
