The mood in the industry is upbeat with the Digital India dream kicking off in full glory. With Sterlite getting a prominent mention in PM Modi's Digital India program, the nation is keenly watching us and expecting us to deliver.

For us, our focus on innovation, engineering excellence, quality and customers have been enablers of success. Innovation being the current buzzword, in last quarter we took few initiatives to build this culture and we will strive to sustain it going forward. Few shining examples of our journey as thought leaders are the important events of last quarter that showcased Sterlite's capabilities. These include the participation Grid Tech exhibition in Delhi, Sterlite Connfluence 2015 in Gurgaon, Innovation Day at our Gurgaon office and many more. The quarter also witnessed the joining of our talented Go GETters and welcoming them to Sterlite gave me a sense of pride as I can already see the exceptional excitement and drive within them to contribute towards a better future. These achievements augur very well for the future of Sterlite and all I would like to say is - "May we continue to live in exciting times". - PRAVIN AGARWAL

•Optical fiber remains as the most viable medium for high speed data communication and even wireless access will need to have fiber based backhaul networks. While countries like China have installed about 900 Million Kms, US with around 500 million Kms of fiber to enable the data transmission, India today has only 80 Million Kms. We expect that there will be a large demand of optical fiber over the next decade in India's effort towards matching global standards of communication. Keeping these trends in mind, over the last few years, we have invested in plant capacities. The fiber capacity has been increased to 20 million km per annum from 12 million. The optical fiber cables capacity is being doubled to 15 million km per annum with an investment of `150 Crores in the current fiscal. We expect to complete this capacity expansion by Q4 of this financial year •The optical fiber and cable infrastructure within the country is growing to keep pace with the demand while challenges, among them, robust installation continues to be a problem area for service providers. Sterlite has been focusing on the telecommunication needs of the country and has been investing in further building research capabilities in products, design & engineering at the state-of-the-art Center of Excellence. The newly developed "Yogaflex" micromodule cable family and "OHLITE NOVA" optical fiber offer superior mechanical flexibility, ease of installation and resistance to extreme situations of turns, bends and stresses during installation. These innovative designs will play an important role in the long-distance, metropolitan as well as the upcoming Fiber To The Home markets in concurrence with the needs of the country.

Learning's, Possible Business opportunities & Next Steps

Our CEO, Dr. Anand Agarwal and Global Head, Telecom Products, Mr. Ankit Agarwal; initiated the event's proceeding by setting the context and defining the forums objectives listed above and its mission which is - "We can choose to be the Disruptor or the One Disrupted"

INNOVATION DAY

@STERLITE BE THE CATALYST FOR CHANGE

Technology keeps changing gears very quickly and if a company does not work towards inclusion of future technologies then it stands on the verge of being obsolete in the market. New startups and small organizations with a technology oriented mindset can completely outplay and displace an established player who has taken years to achieve a dominant position. According to John Chamber's (Ex-CEO, Cisco) prediction , 40% of today's Fortune 500 companies may not even exist in next 10 years. To further emphasize this point given below is a comparison of the Top 15 Global Internet companies based on their Market capitalization over last 20 years (refer Fig1). Here, Apple is the only organization that has persisted in both; the 1995 & 2015 lists and at the 2nd and 1st positions respectively. This was only possible because Apple was innovative enough to create differentiated products consistently. Only innovation can bring the required Incremental and Transformation business benefits to an organization. 8

Innovation Day (Be the Catalyst for Change) was held at Sterlite's Gurgaon office on 26th June, Friday. The daylong event, saw close interaction between Sterlite's top management, internal technology members and various senior members like Bharati Infratel, Flutura, Reliance Jio, etc. from leading information and communication technology (ICT) companies. High profile speakers from Telecom - Consulting, IT, Start up domains attended, spoke and captured the imagination of the audience on various aspects surrounding the theme of Innovation. This was a first of its kind initiative to explore, understand and cultivate a culture and value system led by innovation within the organization. The event's primary objectives included; helping the audience develop an understanding on how the external world perceives the changing technology landscape, understand how companies innovate. What are the best practices? How to identify chronic issues and unmet needs of the telecom industry, to understand what opportunities these issues present, to appreciate the success stories that were shared by each speaker and to identify the right structure and Risk and Rewards to drive innovation within the organization.

We can choose to be the Disruptor or the one Disrupted.

The speakers shared their thoughts and experiences on how innovative companies differ in their DNA from the rest, the importance of Top Management push and the support and patience they need to give and have during this phase of shifting to and building and innovation culture and mindset within an organization, how companies are beating their own benchmarks by defining shorter innovation cycles which can be as short as 45 days, the need for Agile Marketing and differentiated selling by creating a niche. Mr. Prakash Jayaram from Infosys completely mesmerized the audience by introducing the concept of Design Thinking which he explained; starts at a very high level with Empathy. Here you capture all important needs and insights of your customer by continuously empathizing with him. Then you start defining the gathered insights in the form of some product or service which is followed by an Ideation Phase. You choose either a meaningful or the wildest idea and plan to take it to the Prototype Phase. In Prototype phase you can have few iterations to further Test the product/service and then launch it. He shared amazing stories and videos with the audience on how this concept if properly applied within an organization can completely transform the business. Another speaker who impressed everyone was Mr. Nishant Batra from Ericsson. He described how the 140 year old Ericsson Brand survived in the market and how the company takes care of their entire innovation cycle with regard to technology and varied products every year in form of a structured set-up process which they follow religiously.

As per Mr. Batra the seven trends or problem areas for the Indian market where they are innovating and will cater their product lines will be related to Spectrum, Energy Consumption, Backhaul needs, Regulatory Challenges, OTT competition, Rural and Remote Coverage and Indoor Coverage. To conclude with, Siraj Bhattacharya from Sterlite's Power division came and spoke on how we as an organization have moved up the value chain by creating a barrier to our competition by catering to complete turnkey solutions. What followed was a closed internal dialogue in which the key learnings were deliberated on and summed up. The immediate possible options that could be used by the company from these were then discussed at length. Senior management also agreed to chalk out an action plan in coming months to foster and encourage an innovation culture within the organization. A critical starting part of the innovation process is to immediately focus our attention on those areas where our customers are looking for solutions from the ecosystem. In addition to Connecting Lives we should also Inspire it and the journey starts Today.

TECHNOLOGY

The first wave was in the 90's when fixed line connected a billion users to the internet via their desktops. The second one was in 00's when the number of users doubled to use internet via their mobile devices. We're now talking about connecting 50 billion "things" to the internet, which is predicted to be the third wave. The bigger question is what kinds of things really should be connected, or why we would connect them. It can be anything from things in your home, like your smoke alarm or security camera, to things on the manufacturing floor, like heavy industrial equipment, to cars and optical fibre and wearable devices. Everyone on the planet, irrespective of their nation's economy will be impacted by the Internet of Things. It will dwarf every kind of technology platform we've seen thus far. And everyone, including students entering colleges as well as adults who long ago graduated in MBA and engineering are scratching their heads asking, "What kind of jobs will be available a few years from now, and what skills do I need to be employable?" Irrespective of the degree you hold, there are few fundamental skills you'll need when the third wave hits the market. Your knowledge and ability to adopt these skills will determine your success graph in career. Chances are, you need to go back to learning mode. So put on your thinking cap and recognize skills you need to develop. Three skills required for every individual to map their careers in Internet of Things are:

I AM

STERLITE

First question most people ask, "but I'm not a tech guy, I mastered in business administration and analysis". While the skills you already possess will continue to have significant impact on your career, a programming language will be the crucial skill for IoT. Most of the students and professionals are frightened by programs, codes and back out before they start. Coding is rather simple now, for instance, Scratch programming developed by MIT has trained millions of school students and adults using its simple command block approach. Enroll yourself for a free course through websites like CodeAcademy, or shell out few bucks on sites like teamtreehouse.com. Successful selftaught tech founders are emerging every day, one of them is Jan Koum who sold Whatsapp for 19 billion dollars.

This is a quote written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892) and it's still highly relevant in IoT today. In your job, you might be working on data like sales reports, surveys, business analysis, or any simple excel data. Ask yourself the right kind of key questions to make inference and publish results. Get comfortable with dashboards and visual data techniques. Also try data science courses on CourseEra, offered by John Hopkins University.

MUST HAVE SKILLS WHEN

THE “THIRD WAVE” HITS YOU

3 skills you will need by 2020 to be highly employable or begin your own start-up in the Internet of Things (IoT).

It all started in 1999, when Proctor and Gamble employee Kevin Ashton used the phrase “Internet of Things” in his presentation. His idea was to link the RFID technology in P&G's supply chain to the then red-hot topic of internet. 15 years after it was first coined, the term has come to describe the future where everything is interconnected. Simona Jankowski of Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research called Internet of Things “The Third Wave”. 10

We’re now talking about connecting 50 billion “things” to the internet, which is predicted to be the

“Third Wave”.

With all the communication among devices, sensors, machines, and humans, the Internet of Things is really the Internet of Connected Things. Imagination is key to unlocking the value of connected things. For instance, in telecommunications, the question "What cell tower is experiencing problems?" becomes: "What is the impact of the problem on the rest of the network?" Understanding connections is the key to understanding dependencies and uncovering cascading impacts. These connections are key considerations for identifying opportunities for new services and products that leverage the IoT. While you might need far more than essential skills as the IoT moves off the drawing board and into production, mastering these three skills can be a perfect start. Happy learning!

ADDRESSING THE

TECHNICAL PART OF THE

AT&C LOSS PROBLEM

Albeit, various initiatives point to government's intent to provide reliable, quality and round the clock power to all, the power sector faces some of the most intractable problems today plagued by host of issues including the usual suspects low tariff settings, fuel shortage, large T&D losses, lack of supply linkages. The rapid pace of urbanization and development of infrastructure in big cities and rural electrification initiatives is bound to result in the growth of electricity demand. A key area of focus is the revamp of existing distribution infra to make it robust and reliable. Also, important is the need to augment capacity in line with emerging power demand and projected rise in domestic & commercial categories. India's distribution system (at 33KV and below ) included more than 6.76 million Ckt kms of lines and over 482,000 MVA of distribution transformer capacity as of March 2012**. Each state has its own distribution network, and the old vertically integrated SEBs have been unbundled into smaller distribution companies in many states. However, poor financial performance of DISCOMs is a major stumbling block in development of new and management of existing infrastructure. Distribution infrastructure in many states is old and in dilapidated state. The difference between 'Average Cost of Supply' and 'Annual Revenue Requirement' is large and hence, DISCOMs lose money on power sold, ironically. Poor performance is often attributed to high AT&C loses, with persistent case of DISCOMs reporting AT&C looses of over 30%. While, distribution utilities are putting concerted efforts to contain commercial losses by adopting better metering, billing and collection practices etc, however, load shedding as a means of managing demand and minimizing losses is still rampant. 12

Technical losses are another vexing problem in India's transmission distribution sector, power transmission and distribution losses (Million kWh) in India were last measured at 222,412 Million Units in 2011, according to the World Bank. Putting in perspective, T&D Losses in 2011 costed Indian Economy aproxx. 1% of GDP. Alternatively, reduction in Transmission & Distribution losses by 1% would result in a saving in capacity by about 800-900 MW, according to varying estimates. Government programs such APDRP and DDUGJY are concentrating on Commercial loss reduction and improving the communication system, only a part of problem is expected to be addressed. Inter-alia, permanent and sustainable reduction in losses shall come from curbing Technical losses. One of the ways for sustainable reduction in line losses lies in the most simple yet most critical component of a distribution system ~ the conductor. Overhead conductor carries the load current and contributes to 30-45% of the line cost. Interestingly, another 30-45% of the line cost (of tower, foundations etc) depends on conductor ~ wind load, tension load, height of tower. An efficient conductor is largely defined by having more ampacity, more conductivity, better weight to strength ration and optimal cost. The main stay of conductors used in India is ACSR which is a 100 year old product and a few utilities have adopted AAAC. In both cases the average conductivity of the overall conductor is close to 53%. But over the past few years some of Indian transmission utilities have moved towards AL59 which as the name suggests has a conductivity of 59%. This 6% additional conductivity can be used in two ways, =Increase line efficiency reducing the losses on the line by over 5%. =Increase line capacity by 23% to 30% - Directly increasing revenue

the broader telecom and power ecosystem, our CEO, Dr. Anand Agarwal said, "The evolution of Sterlite into engineering solutions and infrastructure development was not more by design than was from demands placed on us by customers. The demands resulted in very close associations with customers to understand what exactly their issues are, where we can add value, and where we can help.” “We were primarily a copper cable company when started. 20 years back, in 1995, the optic fiber facility was set up and 10 years after we commenced manufacturing power conductors. In 2010, we added grid business to our portfolio. Since then, Sterlite Technologies has grown appreciably and globally both in terms of presence and portfolio. This evolution in continuum has been possible only because there were demands and we could leverage those for Sterlite's growth." "The facts that major telecom companies, 6 of the top 10, utilize Sterlite's innovative solutions and 35 percent of the company's consolidated revenue comes from international markets, reaffirm our focus in what we do," said Mr. Anand Agarwal. “The focus continues to be telecom and power in terms of products, system integration, and infrastructure creation. But within the domain, the focus is more on laying transmission lines, for data and electricity. We have undertaken various projects and we are sure that with over 1500 workforce and a Centre of Excellence Sterlite will do wonders." - BALRAM SHARMA (PARTNER DEVELOPMENT & ANALYTICS)

However, this year they planned it to be much larger than its forerunners and far more impactful so that it reflects our move into new areas of business and transformation in relationships the company endeavours to have with its partners. Sterlite Connfluence 2015 had over 130 high profile guests, 44 of which travelled from other countries and was held in Gurgaon on 13th May. The diversity in the nationalities that attended the event and the enthusiasm it created signified the increasing global adeptness of the company and reaffirmed Sterlite's transformation from a manufacturer of optical fiber and power conductors to an end-to-end engineering solutions provider. "When we talk of life partners, we talk of life long relationships. Why can't we invoke the same solid, lasting bond when we talk of business partners? I think Connfluence is the right forum for the Sterlite Group to have a relationship, have an understanding, have a dialogue and see how we can maintain this relationship in the long run, for mutual benefits," said our Vice Chairman, Mr. Pravin Agarwal on the occasion. 15

STERLITE'S MSI APPROACH The Master System Integration approach transfers Sterlite's two decades of data transmission domain expertise into the integrated end-to-end solution. The solution portfolio includes the entire Program Management – Customer Engagement, Network Design & Integration, EPC, Partner Management, Project Execution, Networking, Solutions , ITeS and ICT.

§Best-in-class telecom system integration §Customer focused delivery management through technical leadership §Enriched eco system & Quality practices

ENABLING END-TO-END

TELECOM INFRASTRUCTURE NETWORK FOR SPECTRUM PROJECT IN JAMMU & KASHMIR, INDIA The high speed data transmission infrastructure in India is next to negligible as compared to most of the developed nations. In the government's pursuit of creating a Digital India, the optical fiber infrastructure creation needs to happen much faster than usual. There is not enough time for us to experiment and learn. As a country, we need to do a number of things simultaneously right from producing fiber, trenching-ducting, integrating the network and maintaining the whole infrastructure. This is the need of the hour and this is what Sterlite has been demonstrating through projects like 'Network for Spectrum'. Owing to growing telecommunication needs and shortage of spectrum available for growth of cellular services, the government of India decided to release 150 Mhz of spectrum 16

held by defense sector in the frequency range of 1700 Mhz to 2000 Mhz. The 'Network for Spectrum'(NFS) project, by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), was envisaged to build a new communication network for exclusive use by the armed forces in lieu of the spectrum. The project is among the largest projects globally deploying G.655 Fiber Optic Cables.

through an innovative work environment §Monitoring, tracking & analysis §Strong risk mitigation process §Customer centric program management

Sterlite has played an important part in designing of the intrusion proof network & implementation of a countrywide secure, Multiprotocol Converged Next Generation Network based on dedicated Tri-services Optical Transport Backbone. First of its kind special application intrusion proof cables have been designed for critical defense application such as this. Sterlite has also been entrusted to maintain the network for a period of 7 years. Upon completion, the next generation OFC network broadband highway will enable robust and uninterrupted communication for India's defence services and will increase bandwidth availability in the country.

The national defense communication network is the most critical one and it is imperative to make it 100% secure and immune to intrusion from any kind of external and internal elements. Fiber based intrusion proof network was required to be designed and implemented in such a way that secure information would be transmitted via inner core whereas outer layer would be terminated into intrusion proof system which controls andv monitors intrusions, thus making the network secure and robust. Sterlite is creating one of the most crucial parts of this network of defence - the Jammu & Kashmir region rollout of 9495 Kilometers Optical Fiber Cable Network. Procurement, supply, trenching, laying, installation, testing and maintenance and accessories for construction of NLD backbone and access routes are all being handled by Sterlite on turnkey basis. Jammu & Kashmir region's hilly terrain and extreme cold temperatures make it difficult for any infrastructure project to operate beyond six months in a year. A clear requirement in such scenario is to have a telecom infrastructure partner with capabilities of end to end implementation from design, engineering, implementation to maintenance. At Sterlite, we call this the 'Master System Integration' (MSI) model. 17

Manufacturer (OEM) and every consultant today has a different functionality understanding and hence the need of a different ecosystem for final delivery. Thus, as of today, no smart city - not just in India, but across the globe is completely defined or standardized.

synchronization of various applications once they are upgraded or substituted, are only some of the challenges these cities will face on account of the disjointed requirements in the main architecture and planning of the city.

Most of the government and nodal authorities in charge of the various Smart Cities hire different consultancies. These government or nodal authorities do not have technical experts on board and most of the consultants empanel an OEM to provide for the requisite technical expertise to frame the structure and requirements. As a result, most of the recommendations and suggestions are more of what the OEMs area of expertise is in, rather than the best set of what should be present in a Smart City.

In addition to all of this, issuing of certification from an external agency certifying a Smart City also becomes a challenge as there are no set standards for a Smart City and the minimum expected set of function it performs. Also, once a few cities come up with these arbitrary requirements, in all likelihood the rest would follow suit and this would ultimately lead to creation of cities which would not be very different from the cities existing today in which the government invests huge sums of money but whose infrastructure cannot be used anymore since it is impractical.

Technology being used in the current projects will be obsolete by the time the City is operational, according to the study been done by our team. Need for a lot of customization, implementation time and operational issues due to replacement of old and obsolete technology, cost overrun owing to the absence of economies of scale due to non-standard needs,

Our team at Sterlite hence stresses the significance and urgency of using a defined Blueprint Smart City Architecture so that cities can emulate the same architecture and build its own specific needs on top of it and they has also begin working on how to make this happen.

EXAMPLE OF A TOP USE CASE WORLDWIDE & THE SMART FEATURE SUPERSET THAT EACH CITY SHOULD HAVE

Smart Cities NEED FOR

STANDARDIZATION IN THE SMART CITY ARCHITECTURE The current government has envisioned having 100 Smart Cities across 21 States within the next 5 years. The Cabinet has approved Rs. 48,000 crore for the Smart Cities Mission and Rs. 50,000 crore for the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) which involves upgrading another 500 cities to the standard of a Smart City.

Our team at Sterlite stresses the significance and urgency of using a defined Blueprint Smart City Architecture. 18

Our team at Sterlite has done a comprehensive study of the ongoing projects like Dholera, Naya Raipur Development Authority (NRDA) and Vizag which are still in the consultancy selection phase and have importantly pointed out several variations which would in turn affect the development and operations in these cities. A smart city uses digital technologies such as sensors and termed as Internet of Things; or information and communication technologies (ICT) like a 2G, 3G or Wi-Fi network for example to transfer the data received through the sensors to a Command and Control Centre (CCC). The CCC uses the data received for either record keeping or completing a task or prevention of a mishap thereby enhancing the quality and performance of urban services such as water and electricity supply, sanitation, waste management, etc.; to reduce costs and resource consumption through conversion of waste to energy and fuel, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens through e-governance, grievance redressal, safety and security, etc. According to the findings of the study conducted, in the current scenario, most of the Request for Proposal's (RFQs) which have been put out for enlisting consultants for developing the architecture for these cities have a lot of inconsistencies and varied requirements even in small areas like utilities. The same applies to the rest of the areas like public transport and security, smart transport management, waste, energy, healthcare, etc. as well. As a result, every smart city, every Original Equipment

Smart Plugs (Commercial/Residence)

Smart Energy Displays

The initial step involves the creation of a Smart City Forum which should consist of OEMs, System Integrators who are able to provide end-to-end engineering solutions, consultants and government bodies. Secondly, the forum should be tasked with the creation of a Smart City Architecture Blueprint, defining Smart Packs e.g. Smart Grid etc. and defining a Superset of use case applications under that pack (refer table above for examples), defining Standard Operating Procedures and defining the minimum set of requirements meeting which a City can be certified by a Standards body.

This provides a single platform for the members to get together and discuss plans, provide their inputs, analyse requirements across various projects to deliver cost-effective and viable solutions as well as voice their concerns so that there is a shared rationale between them to enable uniformity required for setting up of successful Smart Cities. To enable this standardization and bring about these changes, the company has already started discussions with leading OEMs to make them aware of the expectations and the benefits of this system. The idea of having such a forum has found wide acceptability among many players. - VIKRAM SINGH MAINS (TELECOM SERVICES BUSINESS) 19

When you educate a woman, it builds in her, a sense of self-esteem. I personally believe that this is the biggest factor for success. Mrs. Jyoti Agarwal Founder of Jeewan Jyoti

India is a country of myriad contradictions. On one hand, it has grown to become an increasingly important player in the emerging global order and one of the largest economies in the world, while on the other hand it still remains home to the largest number of people facing problems like poverty and gender inequality. A large part of are population lives in villages and the girl child still remains deprived of basic educational facilities. Inequality is rampant and uplifting underprivileged women is the need of the hour. Jeewan Jyoti - Sterlite Tech Foundation's special initiative aims to address these issues by empowering the under privileged sections of society, and especially rural women with equal learning opportunities and professional training courses in their formative years; thereby providing them with sustainable income opportunities. This vocational centre that began in 2014 has since then empowered women with voluntary vocational training, microfinancing and job opportunities. The agenda is fairly simple- to make women self-sufficient, feel respected in their families and society at large and be able to choose their life partner on merit.

According to Mrs. Jyoti Agarwal - Founder of Jeewan Jyoti "When you educate a woman, it builds in her, a sense of selfesteem. I personally believe that this is the biggest factor for success. It gives the girl an opportunity to use her education to learn something that will enable her to earn a livelihood eventually. It gives the girl an opportunity to use her education to learn something that will enable her to earn a livelihood eventually. Once she begins earning and is financially independent she not only becomes confident of her capability, but is also treated with dignity in our society. Such a woman will make her family aware of things like basic health care and hygiene of self and surroundings. She will ensure that her children are further educated and impress upon its importance in her family as well as among relatives thereby influencing the future of the generations to come. Through the Jeewan Jyoti centre located at Ambavane, near Pune, the initiative under the guidance of Mrs. Agarwal aims to impact the lives of the women in and around the 40 villages nearby and improve their socio-economic status. The vocational courses that the centre imparts, include a 1 year nursing course, a 6 month certificate course in tailoring, a course in computer operation and a basic course in beauty culture. In addition to these, it also trains the women through self-help groups to make paper and cloth bags, envelopes, self-defence and to speak English.

are encouraged to join the various courses on offer. Several girls who are unable to afford college and pursue their higher studies have enrolled themselves so that they can train and earn and thereby pay for their college fees. Apart from the courses the centre offers, there are several heath care camps conducted as well to train and make the women and the communities they live in aware of basic health and hygiene practices to be maintained for themselves and their surroundings. They have also undertaken numerous sessions to educate the communities in and around Ambavane regarding several diseases and how they can be prevented through proper hygiene. Special attention is paid towards grooming every girl and making them ready to face the world. Activities like giving them a feel of the city life by organizing trips to cities like Mumbai and Pune, teaching them to open bank accounts, withdrawing money from an ATM, taking them to restaurants, movie visits etc. are all part of a larger plan to give the girls an exposure to the world which otherwise they would never have access to. Speaking on the way forward and how Jeewan Jyoti will approach it, Mrs. Agarwal says, "Holistic empowerment of women is our primary objective at Jeewan Jyoti – right from aiding the women with the necessary skills and knowledge to make them employment ready, to building their self-confidence and making them independent by ensuring their placement as per their capability or providing micro-financing options for them to start their own small business, to augmenting these efforts with regular awareness and educative sessions on health and hygiene. All of this enables the women and the communities they live in to bring about a change in themselves and their surroundings which will allow them to live a healthy life in addition to an improved standard of living." "Every chapter of Jeewan Jyoti has brought along experiences that I can cherish over a lifetime. The success story of every girl is my personal victory and it only inspires me to work harder towards taking my dream far and wide. Jeewan Jyoti is a baby I have nurtured long enough, and to see it succeed gives me immense satisfaction", signs off Mrs. Agarwal.

Kalam did not seek office; the office sought him...

AN ODE TO DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM

THE MAN WHO TAUGHT US TO BELIEVE IN OUR DREAMS!

M

y story – the story of a lad who sold his newspapers to help his brother; the story of a pupil reared by Sivasubramania Iyer and Iyadurai Solomon; the story of student taught by teachers like Pandalai; the story of an engineer spotted by MGK Menon and groomed by the legendary Prof. Sarabhai; the story of a scientist tested by failures and setbacks; the story of a leader supported by a large team of brilliant and dedicated professionals. This story will end with me, for I have no belongings in the worldly sense. I have acquired nothing, built nothing; possess nothing – no family, sons, and daughters. - DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM 34

Nobody could have put it better. Kalam was the embodiment of every Indian ideal. His rags-to-success story made him an achiever against insurmountable odds; contribution to Indian defence and military gave him the aura of a nationalist; conduct in the Rashtrapati Bhawan turned him into a People's President-a People's Prince type epithet that instantly gave the West a measure of his popularity; and his inspiring speeches and books made him a hero of the youth and children. As a son, student, scientist, President, teacher, preacher, poet, writer, aficionado of classical Indian music, inspiration for a film (I am Kalam) and the new Chacha of children of India, Kalam lived an all Indian dream. "In recent history, only a few had endeared themselves to the young and old, poor and the rich, and to people belonging to different faiths", former finance minister P Chidambaram rightly summed up Kalam's enormous popularity. Kalam had many virtues that we hold close to our heart. Never give up, don't let failure destroy your dream, concentrate on your karma without thinking of the result, don't let success get to your head and put country above race and religion. Kalam practiced all of them. As a student born in a humble family, he sold newspapers to support the family and finance his education. When Kalam was rejected for the job of a fighter pilot, a dream he had nourished since childhood, he took up an entry-level post at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. And there was no looking back. A man, who was considered not good enough to fly a plane, became the architect of India's missile programme. From somebody who was rejected as a fighter, Kalam went on to become the face of India's nuclear programme. Kalam showed the world that he had wings of steel and determination of iron. Kalam's karma brought him not just the deserved fruits of labour, but much more than that. "Kalam did not seek office; the office sought him", Natwar Singh memorably said after he was elected President. He remains a compelling example of how a karma yogi becomes destiny's favourite child.

Kalam was not the original choice for President in 2002. It was widely believed that PC Alexander, principal secretary to former PM Indira Gandhi, would get the job. Alexander, who was the governor of Maharashtra during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government, was acceptable to most of the NDA constituents. And his past made him believe that even the Congress would back him. To his dismay, Sonia Gandhi refused to back Alexander's candidature. For a very brief period, it seemed vice-president Krishna Kant would get the job. But he was also denied the opportunity after being tipped off to be ready for the election. During this period, the BJP was trying to shed its rabid proHindutva image -- a pursuit that ultimately ended with LK Advani's ill-fated paean to MA Jinnah. And Mulayam Singh, it is believed, offered a deal that the BJP couldn't resist. (Ironically, when Kalam became the front-runner for the President's post in 2012, it was Mulayam Singh who backed out at the last minute, paving the way for Pranab Mukherjee's election.) When the Samajwadi Party agreed to support Kalam as the next President, a consensus soon developed even within the Congress to back his presidency. His election could have been unanimous, but for the Left's decision to prop up Captain Lakshmi Sehgal as token of resistance. Kalam's tenure had the potential of getting marred with controversies. But it is an ode to his personal integrity and administrative tact that he managed to steer India through a political storm. His biggest challenge, of course, was the issue of Sonia Gandhi's eligibility to become PM. After the Congress emerged as the single-largest party in 2004, Sonia's expected ascent to the top job created a political furore. Unexpectedly, Sonia opted out of the race and named Manmohan Singh as the party's choice for PM. There were rumours that Sonia had backed out because President Kalam raised the issue of her Italian citizenship. But Kalam maintained a dignified silence through the brouhaha. Years later, in his memoirs, Kalam revealed that if Sonia had staked claim to the post, he would have had no option but to appoint her. Controversies, though, dogged Kalam for his role as a nuclear scientist. Some of his critics, like Homi Sethna, questioned Kalam's credentials saying he had received his master's degree in aerospace engineering, which is completely different from nuclear engineering. Kalam's entire cult as the face of India's nuclear programme also came under cloud when K Santhanam, the site director of Pokaran II, called the test a 'fizzle' and criticised Kalam for giving a false report. And when Kalam became the President, Princeton scholar M V Ramana attributed it to Kalam's ability to "dress up even mediocre work with the tricolour to pass them off as great achievements." But, nothing could stop Kalam from becoming a legend. When the history of post-Independence India is written, Kalam would rank right up there, in the company of legends like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Rabindranath Tagore. He will inspire India and Indians for years to come. In his poignant goodbye to Kalam, his aide Srijan Pal Singh says, he once asked Kalam what would he like to be remembered as: "President, scientist, writer, Missile Man, Indian 2020, Target 3 billion..what?" Kalam replied: "Teacher." Yes, Kalam would be remembered for teaching us the value of both karma and raj dharma. 35

The Ashes goes the English way!!! Australia was the defending champion of the Ashes going into the series, having won in 2013-14. England spectacularly won the series 3–2, after taking an unassailable lead over Australia on the third morning of the fourth Test at Trent Bridge. The winning margin is all the more remarkable given that it is only 19 months since England were on the receiving end of a 5-0 thrashing by the Australians down under.

The

SportingTimes FOOTBALL SEASON

Records fell as fast as the wickets - the shortest ever first innings of a Test, the best ever figures for a pace bowler in the Ashes and so much more. And the very format of cricket that we have witnessed in this series reminds one more of a Twenty20 league than a test series between the world's oldest test playing nations. Four days in Cardiff and London, two and a half in Birmingham, two and half a session in Nottingham. Whoever says test matches are boring must eat out of their mouths after witnessing the Ashes. It was indeed a treat for the barmy army fans to witness their team humiliating the kangaroos in this fashion. That does not make England an all-conquering nation. This team still has a long way to go. It need to learn to win away, to find a reliable opening partner for Cook, to unearth a spinner capable of winning matches on his own or just holding one end up while a fast bowler at the other end chips away.

KICKS OFF!!!

OVER ALREADY? Can Jose Mourinho and Chelsea grab the crown again? Can Arsene's Arsenal finally turn their age old promise into a Premier League title? Can Manuel Pellegrini raise the blue moon once again at Manchester? Will it be Louis Van Gaal Manchester who has been painting the town red with the big budget at disposal or will it be Brendan Rodgers who has rebuilt Liverpool from the wreckage of that 6-1 humiliation at Stoke City on the final day of the last season? While the story is no different in Spanish Primer League, will it be Barcelona who is on the verge of another treble or will it be the Spanish giants Real Madrid under new boss Rafael Benitez who will lead them to the 33rd title? In German Bundesliga, Bayern Munich will surely prove its supremacy once again over all the clubs. All clubs across the European league have been busy preparing with £1000 + million being spent on players so far, during the summer transfer window. But the one thing surely no football fan will be able to answer is, who will win the Champions league!

For Indian fans, it was a hard fought victory and the first series win under the able captainship of Virat Kohli. The series reaffirmed the belief within us that this is the team that loves to fight and does not give in easily.

IS THE SEASON

With the English Premier League (EPL) already having kicked off, the football gods have already started waking up from a slumber. This August the scoreboard is going to be reset to zero as clubs across Europe once again kick off to prove their supremacy over others in the Domestic & Champions League. Last season, EPL witnessed the title chase wire down to 1.5 teams. Chelsea led wire-to-wire, and while Manchester City made a brief charge, the Blues stuttered around New Years, the two sides drew a month later, and the title race was all but finished before winter had melted away.

disappointing series where the series would be handed over to the opponent without a fight. But what followed in the next two tests was nothing short of cricketing classic. Smarting from the defeat of the first test, the Indian team came back with all guns blazing and knocked the wind out of the Lankan sails in the next two tests. It also meant that the legendary Kumar Sangakarra had to end his phenomenal career with a test loss in the second test.

INDIA'S TOUR OF SRILANKA

CRICBUZZ CUP Two World Cups have gone by since Sri Lanka and India last played a Test series, in July – August 2010. But what hasn’t changed is the fierce rivalry between the two teams. And this was evident in the test series that India won thrillingly by a margin of 2-1. After snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory in the first test, it appeared that the Indian fans were set to witness another

Formula 1 heads into its mid-season break after two thrilling races at Silverstone and in Hungary. Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes continue to dominate the season as they are leading the drivers' and constructors' championships comfortably. The season will conclude with nine races in 14 breathless weeks, starting in Belgium on 23rd August. With no realistic danger of Mercedes losing either of the world titles this season, the question remains whether Ferrari can give them a fight till the end. Mercedes cars and engines are as good as flawless, but the team has betrayed operational weaknesses from time to time. The first half of Ferrari's season has been a story of two, err, halves. In the early long-haul races, they were a thorn in Mercedes' side. But then the FIA closed off a loophole Ferrari had found in the rules governing fuel flow and they slipped back to well over half a second off the silver cars, Sebastian Vettel's Hungary win notwithstanding. Hugely impressive progress on the engine since 2014 has underlined just how much work still needs to be done on the chassis to get it near the best.

CYCLING

Vettel has slipped seamlessly into the team leader position vacated by Fernando Alonso. Kimi Raikkonen's future is surely up in the air after a less-than-convincing first half-season. Watch out for Vettel in remaining races, he will surely not let the 2nd driver's position go away that easily.

Chris Froome became the first Briton to win the Tour de France twice when he safely reached the finish line in Paris at the end of the three-week race. The 2013 champion finished alongside his team-mates on the final stage, behind a sprint won by Andre Greipel. The win for Froome means a Briton, and Team Sky, have now won three of the last four of cycling's showpiece races. Froome, 30, beat Colombia's Nairo Quintana to the yellow jersey by 72 seconds with Spain's Alejandro Valverde third.

U Mumba defeats Bengaluru Bulls to lift the title. The second edition of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi commenced on July 18, 2015, in Mumbai. The inaugural match was between the champions of the first season, Jaipur Pink Panthers and U Mumba, the premier season's finalists. The sport look to build on the success of the first season, which saw a record 435 million viewers tune in across the league.

THE OTHER JERSEY WINNERS ARE:

The season of Star Sports Pro Kabaddi featured a much deeper pool of national and international players. The squad strength of the teams had been bolstered from 14 members during the inaugural edition to 25 for the second season.

Pro Kabbadi JEET LIYA! FINAL PAANGA!!!

Considered rustic and rural, Kabaddi has taken off in a corporate way, thanks to StarSports CEO Uday Shankar from Bihar whose love for sports have given new lease of life to the dwindling sports that was familiar to India since the Vedic period. This season created a place of pride for the National Anthem, one unique feature no other sport has. Every day during the league, it had eminent personalities and local musicians and bands sing the anthem in a manner that captures the essence of the entire country. On July 18, the opening night, Amitabh Bachchan rendered the National Anthem to kick start season 2 of the league. In finals, U Mumba overcame a fighting Bengaluru Bulls 36-30 in a mouth-watering clash to lift the second Pro Kabaddi. Starting the game as favorites, the U Mumba team had to stretch every sinew to get the better of their rivals from Bengaluru who fought tooth and nail but fell short at the end.

Technology - Srinivas Sri Perumbuduru (Research & Development), Rakesh Shankar & Jeetendra Bisht (Business Development) In Focus - Balram Sharma (Partner Development & Analytics) MANDELA'S WAY: Fifteen Lessons on Life, Love, and Courage written by Time Magazine's Richard Stengel.

What’s Trending - Vikram Singh Mains (Telecom Services Business)

In his introductory remarks, Stengel refers to Nelson Mandela as possibly the "last pure hero on the planet". Despite the laudatory remarks, one of the best things about this book is that it takes a realistic look at such a hero.

The CSR Edge - Auyon Acharya (Corporate Communications) & Louette Pai (Admin)

There is no doubt that Mandela is an amazing human being who has helped his country and the world as a whole. Even so, Stengel does not shy away from showing Nelson's humanity. The hero of this book is not a picture-perfect cutout, but a human being who has suffered and learned so much – yet remains human in ways every reader can relate to.

Mandela's

Way

RICHARD STENGEL 42

For those who are beginning their leadership journey, this book is an encouraging read. Nelson's leadership strengths are described in ways that make them accessible to newer leaders, but the depth of suffering and pain that forged the leader he became, is also clear. Nelson's journey is relevant to everyone who wants to make the world a better place, even if the reader will not spend thirty years in prison for her ideals. In his own preface to the book, Mandela talks of ubuntu, the African notion that "we are human only through the humanity of others." This profound humility is much of what makes Mandela an effective leader and also Mandela's Way a strongly suggested read for aspiring leaders.
