Anticipated Honors
Honors designations for December 2020 J.D. candidates are based on grades earned through a candidate’s next-to-last semester. Final graduation honors for all degrees will be determined by the Registrar after final grades have been posted. Final graduation honors will appear on the diploma and official transcript.
Final Degree
The listing of degrees and academic honors for December 2020 candidates in this program are preliminary and subject to final degree requirement evaluation. A candidate earns a degree after the Registrar determines that the candidate has satisfactorily completed all graduation requirements and posted final grades on the official record. The diploma of Stetson University College of Law, signed and sealed by its appropriate officers, is the official public document evidencing that a degree has been awarded. 1
About Stetson University College of Law Founded in 1900, Stetson University College of Law is Florida’s first law school. With its main law campus in Gulfport and a satellite campus in Tampa, Stetson is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1931. Stetson Law is ranked first in the nation for trial advocacy and third in legal writing. In addition to the juris doctor law degree, Stetson offers certificates of concentration in advocacy, elder law, environmental law, international law and social justice advocacy, dual-degree programs for the J.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.P.H., J.D./M.I.E.B.L. and J.D./M.I.N.T.E.C., Joint J.D./LL.M. in Advocacy, and LL.M. degrees in advocacy, elder law and international law. Stetson also offers advanced M.J. degrees for non-lawyers who wish to obtain a greater understanding of legal systems and concepts in the areas of international business, elder law, and healthcare compliance.
Stetson is home to the Centers for Excellence in Advocacy, Elder Law, Higher Education Law and Policy, and International Law, and Institutes for the Advancement of Legal Communication, Biodiversity Law, Caribbean Law, and Veterans Law. Stetson offers international programs in eight countries. An international leader in advocacy education, Stetson has a long-standing record of championships at the world, national, regional and state levels of interscholastic competition. Students can further expand their practical experience by participating in clinical or internship opportunities. Stetson University’s DeLand campus is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, and School of Music.
The Symbols of Commencement Academic Regalia: Academic disciplines are noted by color; law is represented as purple. The doctoral gown has bell sleeves with velvet chevrons on the sleeves and velvet on the panels. The hood is bound and edged with purple velvet and lined with green, the official color of Stetson University as the institution conferring the degree. The tam combines the symbolism of the book and that of a privileged guild. Students graduating with anticipated honors wear a gold tassel on the tam (J.D.)/cap (M.J.), and others wear a purple tassel denoting the discipline of law. Students wearing purple cords are LL.M. graduates. Drab cords are worn by students graduating with the J.D./M.B.A. Purple and white cords are worn by students graduating with the Master of Jurisprudence. Gold cords are worn by students graduating with anticipated honors. Student leadership recognitions wear green cords. Student academic leaders and named award recipients wear green and white cords. Students wearing blue cords have earned the William F. Blews Pro Bono Service
2
Award. Students wearing red, white and blue cords represent U.S. Military Veterans. Students wearing gold, blue and red cords are members of Phi Delta Phi, an international legal honor society. The Mace: The Stetson University Mace, used during all commencement ceremonies, is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of the right to confer degrees. The Stetson mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmunds in 1956. The Medallion: The President’s Medallion, worn at official academic occasions, was first used for the inauguration of President John E. Johns in 1969. The silver medallion includes the University Seal embraced by a wreath of laurel. The circular seal, adopted between 1889 and 1891, bears the motto Pro Deo et Veritate (“For God and Truth”) and the Light of Truth resting on the Book of Wisdom.

Honorary Degree Citation LORI Y. BAGGETT, you have distinguished yourself as a shining example of the heights that can be achieved when a lawyer combines hard work with dedication and outstanding personal and professional ethics. After graduating from Stetson University College of Law with a Juris Doctor in 2002, you completed a federal clerkship for the Hon. Charles R. Wilson, U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit before joining the law firm Carlton Fields in Tampa. There you have excelled and built a stellar name for yourself in construction law. You have successfully represented companies in labor and employment law issues, with an expertise in workplace safety and health matters, and are one of only a handful of Florida lawyers with OSHA 30 certification. Your exemplary work has led to a number of accolades, including being named to The Best Lawyers in America for Construction Law, Florida Trend’s Florida Legal Elite, and Florida Super Lawyer. Most recently, you were named managing shareholder of the Tampa office of Carlton Fields, the third-largest law firm in the Tampa Bay area with 96 local attorneys and more than 300 nationwide. You have held many leadership roles in the legal world, at your firm, and in the community. You served as chair of the American Bar Association’s Forum on Construction Law Labor and Employment Division and are completing a three-year term on the Forum’s Governing Committee. You co-chair Carlton Fields’ Women’s Alliance and are a past fellow of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, a national organization dedicated to building a more open and diverse legal profession. As the first person of color to hold your current position, and one of a tiny percentage of your gender and ethnicity to not only become partner, but to become managing partner in Big Law, you are an inspiration to us all. Your focus on promoting diversity in the legal profession and your barrier-breaking career represents the embodiment of consummate practice-readiness and of the immense possibilities present in the current legal landscape for a Stetson Law graduate. In addition to your professional responsibilities, you continue to dedicate time and talent to the Stetson Law community by serving a second term as a member of the Stetson Law Alumni Association and being recently inducted into the U.S. Supreme Court with other Stetson alumni. You generously established the Baggett Family Scholarship at Stetson Law for African American students who exhibit academic and personal leadership, paving the way for the meaningful inclusion of diverse perspectives in higher education and the legal profession at large. In light of your many achievements, and under the authority vested in me by Stetson University’s Board of Trustees, I proudly present you with the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
