Anticipated Honors
Honors designations for Spring/Summer 2021 J.D. candidates are based on grades earned through a candidate’s next-to-last semester. Final graduation honors for all degrees will be determined by the Registrar after final grades have been posted. Final graduation honors will appear on the diplomaa and official transcript.
Final Degree
The listing of degrees and academic honors for Spring/Summer 2021 candidates in this program are preliminary and subject to final degree requirement evaluation. A candidate earns a degree after the Registrar determines that the candidate has satisfactorily completed all graduation requirements and posted final grades on the official record. The diploma of Stetson University College of Law, signed and sealed by its appropriate officers, is the official public document evidencing that a degree has been awarded. 3
About Stetson University College of Law Founded in 1900, Stetson University College of Law is Florida’s first law school. With its main law campus in Gulfport and a satellite campus in Tampa, Stetson is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1931. Stetson Law is ranked one of the best in the nation for trial advocacy and legal writing. In addition to the juris doctor law degree, Stetson offers certificates of concentration in advocacy, elder law, environmental law, international law and social justice advocacy, dual-degree programs for the J.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.P.H., J.D./M.I.E.B.L. and J.D./M.I.N.T.E.C., Joint J.D./LL.M. in Advocacy, and LL.M. degrees in advocacy, elder law and international law. Stetson also offers advanced M.J. degrees for non-lawyers who wish to obtain a greater understanding of legal systems and concepts in the areas of international business, elder law, and healthcare compliance.
Stetson is home to the Centers for Excellence in Advocacy, Elder Law, Higher Education Law and Policy, and International Law, and Institutes for the Advancement of Legal Communication, Biodiversity Law, Caribbean Law, and Veterans Law. Stetson offers international programs in eight countries. An international leader in advocacy education, Stetson has a long-standing record of championships at the international, national, regional and state levels of interscholastic competition. Students can further expand their practical experience by participating in clinical or internship opportunities. Stetson University’s DeLand campus is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, and School of Music.
The Symbols of Commencement Academic Regalia: Academic disciplines are noted by color; law is represented as purple. The doctoral gown has bell sleeves with velvet chevrons on the sleeves and velvet on the panels. The hood is bound and edged with purple velvet and lined with green, the official color of Stetson University as the institution conferring the degree. The tam combines the symbolism of the book and that of a privileged guild. Students graduating with anticipated honors wear a gold tassel on the tam (J.D.)/cap (M.J.), and others wear a purple tassel denoting the discipline of law. Students wearing purple cords are LL.M. graduates. Drab cords are worn by students graduating with the J.D./M.B.A. Purple and white cords are worn by students graduating with the Master of Jurisprudence. Gold cords are worn by students graduating with anticipated honors. Student leadership recognitions wear green cords. Student academic leaders and named award recipients wear green and white cords. Students wearing blue cords have earned the William F. Blews Pro Bono Service
4
Award. Students wearing red, white and blue cords represent U.S. Military Veterans. Students wearing gold, blue and red cords are members of Phi Delta Phi, an international legal honor society. The Mace: The Stetson University Mace, used during all commencement ceremonies, is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of the right to confer degrees. The Stetson mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmunds in 1956. The Medallion: The President’s Medallion, worn at official academic occasions, was first used for the inauguration of President John E. Johns in 1969. The silver medallion includes the University Seal embraced by a wreath of laurel. The circular seal, adopted between 1889 and 1891, bears the motto Pro Deo et Veritate (“For God and Truth”) and the Light of Truth resting on the Book of Wisdom.

Honorary Degree Citation EDWIN CAMERON, you have distinguished yourself as a tireless advocate for social justice,
particularly for racial and LGBTIQ equality and to destroy the stigma and unjust discrimination for those living with HIV/AIDS. You attended Stellenbosch University; the University of Oxford, where you were a Rhodes Scholar and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence and the Bachelor of Civil Law; and the University of South Africa, where you earned a Bachelor of Laws. You hold honorary doctorates in law from King’s College London; the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; Oxford University; the University of St. Andrews; Stellenbosch University; and Sussex. As a young lecturer and human rights lawyer at the University of Witwatersrand’s Law School in the 1980s, you were unafraid to not only question but outright criticize the establishment that was committing human rights atrocities. You fought against the enactment of the most profound form of racial prejudice the legal system has known—apartheid. You taught human rights law and practiced as an anti-apartheid barrister, defending African National Congress members accused of treason and appearing in several celebrated land tenure and forced removal defenses. During your time working with the Centre for Applied Legal Studies, your practice spanned a variety of legal issues, but perhaps most importantly, you co-drafted the Charter of Rights on AIDS and HIV, co-founded the AIDS Consortium, and founded the AIDS Law Project. You were the first senior South African official to come out as proudly gay and state publicly that you are living with HIV/AIDS and have campaigned for prevention, testing, affordable treatment, and an end to stigma. Your efforts helped ensure South Africa had the first constitution in the world that emphatically included protection against discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation. President Nelson Mandela appointed you to the High Court in 1994, and thus began a 25-year judicial career. You were elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal in 1999 and to the Constitutional Court in 2008. You had many well-known seminal judgments on anti-corruption, defamation, and free speech prior to your retirement in 2019. You have been called “one of South Africa’s new heroes” and the personification of “the intersection of health, egalitarianism and justice in one man.” In light of your ceaseless efforts to speak truth to power, lift up the downtrodden and oppressed, and bring hope and acceptance to those living under the weight of stigma, and under the authority vested in me by Stetson University’s Board of Trustees, I proudly present you with the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
