Anticipated Honors

Honors designations for Spring/Summer 2024 J.D. candidates are based on grades earned through a candidate’s next-to-last semester. Final graduation honors for all degrees will be determined by the Registrar after final grades have been posted. Final graduation honors will appear on the diploma and official transcript.

Final Degree

The listing of degrees and academic honors for Spring/Summer 2024 candidates in this program are preliminary and subject to final degree requirement evaluation. A candidate earns a degree after the Registrar determines that the candidate has satisfactorily completed all graduation requirements and posted final grades on the official record. The diploma of Stetson University College of Law, signed and sealed by its appropriate officers, is the official public document evidencing that a degree has been awarded.

About Stetson University College of Law

Founded in 1900, Stetson University College of Law is Florida’s first law school. With its main law campus in Gulfport and a satellite campus in Tampa, Stetson is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1931.

Stetson Law is ranked one of the best in the nation for trial advocacy and legal writing. In addition to the juris doctor law degree, Stetson offers certificates of concentration in advocacy, business law, elder law, environmental law, international law, and social justice advocacy, dual-degree programs for the J.D./ M.B.A., J.D./M.I.E.B.L. and J.D./M.I.N.T.E.C., Joint J.D./LL.M. in Advocacy, and LL.M. degrees in advocacy, elder law, and international law. Stetson also offers advanced M.J. degrees for non-lawyers who wish to obtain a greater understanding of legal systems and concepts in the areas of international business, elder law, and healthcare compliance.

Stetson is home to the Centers for Excellence in Advocacy, Elder Law, Higher Education Law and Policy, and International Law, and Institutes for the Advancement of Legal Communication, Biodiversity Law, Caribbean Law and Policy, and Veterans Law. Stetson offers international programs in eight countries.

An international leader in advocacy education, Stetson has a long-standing record of championships at the international, national, regional, and state levels of interscholastic competition. Students can further expand their practical experience by participating in clinical or externship opportunities.

Stetson University’s DeLand campus is home to the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, and School of Music.

The Symbols of Commencement

Academic Regalia: Academic disciplines are noted by color; law is represented as purple. The doctoral gown has bell sleeves with velvet chevrons on the sleeves and velvet on the panels. The hood is bound and edged with purple velvet and lined with green, the official color of Stetson University as the institution conferring the degree. The tam combines the symbolism of the book and that of a privileged guild. Students graduating with anticipated honors wear a gold tassel on the tam (J.D.)/cap (M.J.), and others wear a purple tassel denoting the discipline of law.

Students wearing purple cords are LL.M. graduates. Drab cords are worn by students graduating with the J.D./M.B.A. Purple and white cords are worn by students graduating with the Master of Jurisprudence. Gold cords are worn by students graduating with anticipated honors. Student leadership recognitions wear green cords. Student academic leaders and named award recipients wear green and white cords. Students wearing blue cords

have earned the William F. Blews Pro Bono Service Award. Students wearing red, white and blue cords represent U.S. Military Veterans. Students wearing gold, blue and red cords are members of Phi Delta Phi, an international legal honor society.

The Mace: The Stetson University Mace, used during all commencement ceremonies, is a ceremonial staff used as a symbol of the right to confer degrees. The Stetson mace, designed by Episcopalian Canon Edward Nason West of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York, was presented to President J. Ollie Edmunds in 1956.

The Medallion: The President’s Medallion, worn at official academic occasions, was first used for the inauguration of President John E. Johns in 1969. The silver medallion includes the University Seal embraced by a wreath of laurel. The circular seal, adopted between 1889 and 1891, bears the motto Pro Deo et Veritate (“For God and Truth”) and the Light of Truth resting on the Book of Wisdom.

Honorary Degree Citation

RHEA F. LAW is the eighth president of the University of South Florida. She began serving as USF’s interim president in August 2021 and was confirmed to the role in a unanimous vote by the Florida Board of Governors in March 2022. A proud fifth-generation Floridian who is passionate about the success of the state, Law is actively involved in corporate, public policy, civic, and charitable work.

The first USF graduate to serve as president, Law has deep ties within the USF community and across the State of Florida. She earned an undergraduate degree in management from USF, putting herself through school while working as a university research project administrator for the Office of Sponsored Research. She then earned her terminal degree in law at Stetson University College of Law.

As one of the founding members of the USF Board of Trustees, Law spent five years as vice chair and four years as the board’s first and only female chair, contributing significantly to USF’s growth and evolution as a high-impact, global research university.

While board chair, Law helped establish an aspirational goal in USF’s strategic plan for the university to pursue eligibility for membership in the Association of American Universities, a group comprised of 71 leading research universities in the U.S. and Canada. Under Law’s presidency, this goal was realized in 2023 when USF was invited to join the prestigious association.

Law is the former CEO and chair of the board of Fowler White Boggs, a Florida law firm. In 2014, she led the merger of Fowler White with a national firm, Buchanan Ingersoll and Rooney, where she continued to serve as chair of the firm’s Florida offices until 2021. The resulting consolidation created a powerhouse firm with law offices located throughout the country and hundreds of lawyers who specialize in a broad spectrum of industries such as energy, finance, health care, and life sciences.

Throughout her 35-year-plus legal career, Law has worked with clients on land use and strategic planning to meet the needs of a growing Florida. Her areas of practice included higher education, environment and land use, government, and economic development.

Law has held top leadership positions with many Florida-based organizations. She served as board chair of the Florida Council of 100, a nonpartisan public policy organization that shares guidance and insights with Florida’s elected leaders and government officials on behalf of the business community. She was also a two-time chair of the Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation and the Tampa Bay Partnership during times of reorganization and expansion and served as chair of the USF Health Professions Conferencing Corporation, which operates the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS). At Stetson University, Law was a member of the Board of Trustees and previous chair of the College of Law’s Board of Overseers.

Currently, Law serves on the board of directors for Tampa Electric, one of Florida’s largest investor-owned electric utilities, and Peoples Gas, Florida’s largest natural gas distribution utility. She also serves on the board of directors for the Florida Council of 100, the Tampa Bay Economic Development Council, the Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Council of Governors for the Tampa Bay Partnership, the board of directors executive committee for the American Athletic Conference, and the board of directors and national board of advisors for the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center.
