Collaborating Interior Design to Psychology
I have been working as an interior designer for quite a while now and most of my clients often ask about how the design would look like, what colors will I be using for the paint, what are the furniture and accessories that we need to pick etc. but only a few would ask an interesting question about the psychological effects of interior design. Most of us base our judgment on what we see and that's a fact, but there's more to that! What we see is connected on how we feel about things; like for example, when we buy an something, we subconsciously choose base on how we feel about it and this is the same when buying and decorating a house. The choices we make on while designing or decorating our home will have a long term effect on our perception in life. So without further ado, let's go ahead and discuss the factors that can help us make the right choices. Different vibes in hue Color has long been used as stimuli to create a cozy and vibrant ambiance. However, research shows that it differs from person to person as well as culture and temperature in the area may play a role. According to the survey, most 35% of Americans prefer blue, followed by green at 16%, purple by 10%, and red at 9%. There are meaning to different colors and using them can greatly affect an interior design. Kindly see the table below as a reference (source wiki).
Now that we know the meaning behind colors, it will be easier for us to choose the right one for our home to create a harmonious interior design. A little tip, it's better to choose neutral colors as a base then add in two or three more colors to create a personality for your interior design. Mix-and-matching the colors is not the right thing to do, the right process is collaborating the colors and its effect to create a pleasant feel for your home. Feng Shui for Good Vibes Do you believe that if you have a positive outlook on life, then most probably you'll be successful in the future? Feng Shui actually capitalizes on that idea as its main objective is to create good vibes and
positive thinking as it is strongly rooted in spirituality and harmony. It is a traditional way of living dating back 4000 BC and still widely practiced in different countries. There's a close relationship between Feng Shui and interior design from an artistic perspective because it practices harmonious relationship between art in nature and spirituality. If you will be asking, is there a scientific explanation about Feng Shui, then the answer is it depends on what angle we are looking at. If we are talking about the claims of Feng Shui practitioners that it brings good luck, wealth, improved health, better relationship etc. then there's no scientific explanation about that. However, if we will look into the angle of how our environment affects our way of living, then past studies done by neuro-sociologist and psychologist were able to answer that. The Illusion of Perception Space perception is a process where our brain gathers information on how we perceive our environment mainly through the eye and other sensory. Space perception has been practiced along with interior designing to create space illusion. What I'm talking about is how we can make a small room appear more spacious. Following these different techniques below can make a room look bigger.
neutral and lighter colors can give a feeling that the room is bigger visually. Scale the size of the furniture to the room space. Lessen the clutters inside the room. Foldable furniture is another option as you can take it away when not in use. Placing a large mirror at the back wall will create an illusional space. A ceiling that is brightly painted can draw the eye upward making it look like a high ceiling. Furniture that blends in with the wall color can give a feeling of widened space.
There are so many techniques that we can master when it comes to interior design, so if you have more kindly leave comments below so that we can have a friendly discussion.
