ABOUT RESCUING EMMANUEL RESCUINGEMMANUEL NCM/Fathom & The Emmanuel Network

Setting out to make a film about street children, filmmakers Len & Georgia Morris are hijacked by a 13-year-old street boy in Nairobi, Kenya. Belligerently stoned on shoe glue, Emmanuel declares, "I want to go to school right now!" He will not be ignored. He is running from hunger, police, his mother's death and a horrific life in Nairobi's most notorious slum. Alone, undocumented, a nobody, he stinks, eats garbage, and is swept off the streets by police and sent to adult jail cells. Moved by his dire condition, the filmmakers initiate a plan to rescue Emmanuel and grant him his wish of a new home and a chance to go to school. A huge effort yields surprising results. In trying to help one boy, they learn how difficult it will be to change one life for the better.

THE THEME RESCUINGEMMANUEL NCM/Fathom & The Emmanuel Network

For a child like Emmanuel, every day is an emergency. Each day he must struggle for the basics we take for granted; food, shelter, clean water, personal safety.

100 million children live on the streets 10 million children die each year from preventable causes 25,000 children a day... every day. Emmanuel’s story makes it personal.... people connect with one boy whose name, ironically means,

“God with us, God among us”. When we first meet him, Emmanuel is eating garbage with his pals in central Nairobi. He has fled one of the worst slums on earth, Kibera. He is orphaned, having lost his mother to HIV and he has only sporadically attended school. Assaulted daily by older boys and the police, living amidst garbage and drinking contaminated water, he is at risk for

“Don’t think of them as figures on a page. Imagine the face of a child you love, think of your own child” Archbishop Desmond Tutu from his interview in RESCUING EMMANUEL

HIV and a myriad of other diseases. His health and very survival are at risk. The intensely personal story of Emmanuel is a window into the conditions confronted daily by millions of children, worldwide. Hunger, crushing poverty, lack of educational opportunity, gender inequality, abuse, abandonment, child labor, disease and civil unrest haunt hundreds of millions of children like Emmanuel and consign them to misery. That misery becomes one of the strongest recruiting tools for terrorist networks, helping to de-stabilize governments and make our world unsafe for our own children. RESCUING EMMANUEL draws upon five years of filming in Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Romania and the United States to expand Emmanuel’s story while showing how 100 million children live and die on the streets. The slums in the film aren’t fictional, nor are the children raising children, found begging on trains or living underground, addicted to glue, treated brutally by police, or trafficked into prostitution.

HOPE & HARD WORK “Sometimes I just go to them and talk with them, it’s all I can do and all they want from me.” Bravo on visiting the boys at night on the streets of Nairobi

“You have to be a Mamma to them, to love them, so that they can be what God wants them to be” Mamma Zipporah on how Huruma Children’s Home is her family

But RESCUING EMMANUEL is not simply a litany of global ills and child neglect. It also introduces us to caring people who work selflessly and daily to make a difference. People like Bravo (John Mbgua) a former boy scout troop leader and street boy who befriends Emmanuel and his pals. RESCUING EMMANUEL shows us the power of trying to make a difference, one child at a time. It introduces us to a remarkable woman, Mamma Zipporah, who with her husband Issac, has made her life a mission to care for abused children creating, one child at a time, perhaps the biggest family you’ll ever meet... 154 at last count. RESCUING EMMANUEL reminds us that these children are symptoms of a far broader set of inequities. At the end of the day, the object is to keep children like Emmanuel off the streets in the first place.

“ You can’t help children alone. What we have to do is help communities because children are a part of communities.” Dr. Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Laureate, from her interview in RESCUING EMMANUEL.

WHY NOVEMBER 19th? This is the eve of the 20th Anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in November 1989.

This landmark document makes binding among 193 signatory countries the civil, social, political, economic and cultural rights of all children.

Before the CRC was adopted, children were often subjected to a common-law approach in many countries, and treated as property or chattel. Only the United States and Somalia have failed to ratify the CRC. President Obama has called this“ an embarrassment” and promised to review U.S. policy in this matter. .

November 20th is also International Children’s Day.

CONCLUSION

“A child is a gift to us all. Archbishop Desmond Tutu Nobel Peace Laureate, 1984

RESCUING EMMANUEL will be a special event that uses the FATHOM network of theaters to offer audiences the premier of a powerful documentary and the perspectives and insights of a distinguished panel. The event comes at a time when economic instability has made things worse for children in every corner of the world, including the United States. More than ever, children need public advocacy to make their case and claim their share of our resources and attention. There is a feeling of possibility in the air right now, a chance to reconnect with basic human values, that we are not isolated or indifferent to the fate of the Emmanuels of the world. It is an old message that will resonate this Holiday season.
