BIOGRAPHY

KAMFERS DAM

In the course of his work, Jeremy has been lucky enough to see inside some of the grandest buildings in the world. However, his home for this residency was as simple as it comes: a mud hut on the edge of a wetland in South Africa. But there are few other places that Jeremy would rather paint, because this body of water is home to vast, colourful flocks of flamingos.

The Oppenheimer family, as part of their advocacy for South Africa’s threatened birdlife, built an artificial island on the Kamfers Dam wetland to provide breeding grounds for tens of thousands of flamingoes. After a member of the family saw a painting of flamingos that Jeremy had previously produced, they asked Jeremy to document the spectacular scenes at Kamfers Dam.

Since this residency, Jeremy has continued to paint these beautiful birds. “Flamingos give you infinite possibilities for composition,” he says. “With flamingos, when I start painting, I don’t know what I’m going to achieve: I just go for it. And I always find something fun, colourful and uplifting. It’s a totally different way from how I usually work, which is great because it stops me getting stagnant.”

LONDON OLYMPICS GAMES, 2012

As one of the official Olympic artists, Jeremy’s work wasn’t only about the two memorable weeks when London played host to the world’s greatest sporting competition. It was as much about the years of gruelling training leading up to the games, as it was about the moment the starter pistol was fired. And it was as much about the Paralympics as it was about the Olympics themselves.

In fact, some of Jeremy’s most memorable moments during the residency were spent hearing the stories of the Paralympian athletes, including those who had suffered catastrophic injuries while serving in Afghanistan. He used watercolours to capture the athleticism of Ade Adepitan, who survived polio in childhood and has gone on to become one of the country’s most successful wheelchair basketball players.

Jeremy wanted to capture the grit and resilience that are essential to performing at this elite level. This was clearly a theme that resonated with the British public, who flocked to the travelling exhibition of the Olympic artists’ work – giving even those who couldn’t make it to London the chance to take part in this once-ina-generation national event.

These exhibitions raised money for The British Paralympic Association, helping the next batch of Paralympians to wow us with their sporting prowess.

HIGHGROVE, 2013 FOR THE PRINCE OF WALES

A country boy through and through, Jeremy has spent his whole life around those who work the land. So when he was looking for a fresh way of depicting Highgrove, the Prince of Wales’ Gloucestershire Estate, he proposed focusing on “life beyond the garden fence”: on the thriving farmland where the Prince has pioneered a sustainable approach to agriculture.

Like his father the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales was far ahead of his time in stressing the need for farming methods which preserve, rather than exploit, nature. So almost forty years ago, he converted Highgrove’s farm into a completely organic system, using traditional methods to prove their viability. As patron of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, the Prince also made the farm home to rare native breeds of cattle, pigs and sheep.

For Jeremy, all this was grist for the mill. He aimed to capture the timeless quality of life at Highgrove, and show the beauty of a farm that works in harmony with nature. As the Prince said when Jeremy presented him with the paintings, “our natural world is as precious as our cathedrals and our palaces” – and just as worthy of celebration.

ASTON MARTIN, 2013 CENTENARY TOUR

Nothing encapsulates the marriage of speed and style as much as an Aston Martin. So it was only fitting that, when Jeremy was asked to help mark the hundredth anniversary of this most venerable of British car manufacturers, he was sent on a high-speed mission to produce fourteen paintings in fourteen days.

The Aston Martin Owners Club celebrated its anniversary by sending a convoy of Aston Martins on a tour of the Alps. Jeremy had to stick to an exacting schedule to get the images he wanted. “I needed to stay ahead of the convoy, so I could capture them as they came through the important passes and villages. I’d head out in my van at 6am, to stay one step ahead of the cars. I’d arrive at that night’s hotel at 6pm, eat, then retire to my bedroom – which I’d earlier set up as a studio – and paint from 9pm-3am. Then I’d frame the painting, get three hours sleep, and the whole thing would start again at 6am. That way, I was able to produce a painting every night,” enabling Jeremy to exhibit the entire collection at the black tie gala to mark the end of the tour. The show then moved to the British Motor Museum in Warwickshire.

WINDSOR CASTLE, 2014 FOR THE QUEEN

When Jeremy was invited by Her Majesty Queen to document the life of Windsor Castle in 2014, he faced the exciting challenge of deciding where to place his focus. Every residency offers up a range of potential features to focus on; but Windsor Castle, with its thousand-year history and hundreds of staff members, provides a particularly vast canvas. How to capture the complexity of modern life at the Queen’s official residence, while reflecting the centuries of tradition that still keep the castle ticking?

After spending a week immersing himself in life at the castle, Jeremy found his subject: the Royal Mews, the working stables, which Jeremy describes as “the heartbeat of the castle”. It’s as much a hub of activity in the 21st-century as it was during the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth, five hundred years ago. Focusing on the Mews also pays tribute to the Queen’s passion for, and expert knowledge of, all things equestrian: breeding, training, and racing horses.

Jeremy painted and sketched horses, including the Queen’s Fell ponies, in their varied roles at the castle: from the ceremonial pomp of the King’s Troop at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, to providing athletic spectacle at Guards Polo Club and Royal Ascot racing, as well as the more quotidian aspects of caring for these beautiful beasts.

Jeremy was delighted to present the paintings to the Queen in person. Her Majesty immediately recognised the horses portrayed in the scenes, including ones that she had bred – as well as those descended from Queen Victoria’s thoroughbreds.

GOODWOOD,

2015 FOR THE DUKE OF RICHMOND

Goodwood felt like a natural home for Jeremy’s work. At his West Sussex estate, The Duke of Richmond hosts events that marry sports, tradition, and classic British style. In 2015, the Duke commissioned Jeremy to depict three events: the Festival of Speed, a hill climb featuring historic and modern cars that attracts 150,000 daily spectators; Goodwood Revival, which celebrates the golden age of motor-racing with a race of classic cars from the 1950s and 60s; and Glorious Goodwood, one of the highlights of the horseracing calendar.

“Nowhere is more glamorous and high octane than Goodwood,” says Jeremy. “Where else can you see cars worth literally millions of pounds being raced around the track like go-karts?”. Goodwood is all about celebrating the past, and spectators join in the fun by donning period dress, creating ample opportunities for scenes of timeless glamour. “I wanted to have the feeling with the paintings that you couldn’t pin a date on it – did this happen yesterday, or was it a few decades ago?”

THE JAMES HUNT ESTATE, 2016

When it came to depicting Formula One legend James Hunt, there was only one colour that could capture his vivid personality and driving style. Winning the 1976 World Championship in the vermilion McLaren M23, James Hunt was undeniably red-blooded –both on and off the track.

The 1976 Championship was one of the most dramatic in the history of the sport, the culmination of the celebrated rivalry between James and Niki Lauda. For the 40th anniversary, James’ sons Freddie and Tom commissioned Jeremy to create a series of paintings paying tribute to their father, who tragically died at the age of 45. Jeremy spent time with Tom and Freddie going through their private photo albums, working with them to tell the story of their dad’s victory in eleven moments – a reference to James’ starting number in the 1976 championship.

The British Racing Drivers’ Club chose to exhibit the paintings at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix – a fitting forum for a project that aimed to celebrate James Hunt’s immense contribution to the sport.

WIMBLEDON, 2017 CHAMPIONSHIP ARTIST

When Jeremy was asked to be the 2017 Wimbledon Championship Artist, he jumped at the chance to document his favourite sporting event – but he had no idea just how close he’d get to some of the greatest players the sport has ever seen: Murray, Nadal, Djokovic, and that year’s champion, Roger Federer.

Every day for two weeks, Jeremy had access to a different part of the All England Club as it played host to the oldest tennis tournament in the world. From watching the greats on the practice courts, to witnessing Federer lift the trophy for a record eighth time; from rubbing elbows with world leaders in the Royal Box, to eating strawberries and cream up in the gods.

The following Jeremy was asked to produce an exhibition of paintings based on defining moments from Wimbledon championships of the past. These, and the paintings he produced at the 2017 Championship, were exhibited to mark the All England Club’s 150th anniversary in 2018, with all proceeds going towards the Wimbledon Foundation.

RAF CENTENARY, 2018

For the centenary of the RAF in 2018, Jeremy was commissioned to sketch “the last of the few”: the surviving pilots from the Battle of Britain. Winston Churchill famously said of the aircrews who fought the Battle of Britain that “never in the history of mankind has so much been owed by so many to so few”, as their bravery and skill proved pivotal in stopping the Nazi invasion of Britain in 1940.

By 2018, just four of “the few” survived, among them Geoffrey Wellum, bestselling author of the memoir First Light. Jeremy was honoured to meet these four men, sketching them while hearing their stories of the war. In accordance with their wishes, the men were captured in an informal style, out of their uniforms and without the pomp of ceremony – showing the humans behind this extraordinary chapter in British history. Since Jeremy sketched them, all four remaining members of “the few” have sadly passed away.

The success of the Battle of Britain portraits led the RAF to commission sketches of the surviving veterans of Britain’s wartime bombing campaign, including Johnny Johnson, the last remaining original member of No. 617 Squadron RAF – aka “the Dambusters”. Both sets of portraits were auctioned, raising £75,000 for the RAF Air Cadets.

PLATINUM JUBILEE, 2022

As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations Jeremy was commissioned to paint HM The Queen’s most successful race horse ‘Dunfermline’ which was presented to the Queen at Windsor Castle. This marked the launch of Jeremy’s sell-out exhibition ‘All The Queen’s Horses’ which used his paintings of Her Majesty’s ponies and horses to tell the story of her life and reign.

Jeremy has had the privilege of working with The Queen on three occasions, firstly at St James’s Palace in 2009 for the 500th anniversary of her Gentleman at Arms where he shadowed Her Majesty’s ceremonial Bodyguard at all the State occasions throughout the year. He was then appointed artist in residence at Windsor Castle in 2014 where Jeremy told the story of royal life at the Castle through the eyes of the horse. Then in 2022 Jeremy was commissioned to paint The Queen to mark the 75th anniversary of her being Colonel in Chief of the Royal Lancers. This milestone also coincided with 100th anniversary of this famous and highly decorated regiment.

OFFICIAL ARTIST FOR THE BRITISH ARMY SKI TEAM, 2023

Jeremy has worked with the British Army Ski Team on several occasions in the French and Swiss Alps. “I guess winter alpine sport is an important part of any military training, but it still always amazes me how soldiers can throw themselves into so many different situations with such skill and purpose.” He also painted members of the British ski team for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games in preparation for his job at London 2012. “I found the bravery of the paralympic skiers to be remarkable; how they allowed themselves to travel at such speed with their disabilities was breath-taking.”

The bright, white, snowy mountain-scapes combined with the dynamic speed of the athletes travelling down the steep pistes lend themselves to Jeremy’s monochromatic style of painting which he has used to portray sport for a number of years.
