INTRODUCTION

June 28, 2013 The Yarnell Hill wildfire was ignited by lightning near Yarnell, Arizona. On June 30, 2013, it overran and killed 19 City of Prescott, Arizona firefighters who were members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. The wildfire was fully contained by July 10, 2013.

As the news of this horrific tragedy spread, successful, self-made Arizona business man, Ronald Millsap, was stunned at the death toll and believed there had to be a better way to protect firefighters battling these deadly wildfires. He had a vision to develop a “pod or some sort of safety unit that would provide shelter, oxygen, water and first aid to anyone inside up to a 24 hour period. This pod would be completely fire resistant up to 5000 degrees Fahrenheit.

This event resulted in the highest wildland firefighter death toll in the United States since the 1933 Griffith Park Fire killed 29 firefighters, and it was the highest death toll from any United States wildfire since the 1991 East Bay Hills fire killed 25 people. It was the sixth deadliest American firefighter disaster overall and the deadliest wildfire ever in Arizona.

6

MISSION STATEMENT

We are a highly technologically advanced product, specializing in the protection of Hot Shot firefighting teams around the world.

7

RESEARCH

SWOT ANALYSIS S = Strength The major strength in this safety unit is the ability to save lives in a way that has never been done before. It will create peace of mind, not only the firefighters, but also for their loved ones. This safety unit will reduce fatalities in the firefighting profession in the United States and around the world.

W = Weakness The weakness in this case is time. The time it will take to design, produce and to get on-site for the firefighters to use. This means lives will still be at risk and fatalities will still occur. The other weakness is the start-up cost. Something this technologically advanced will cost an untold amount of funding in terms of material research, testing and building.

O = Opportunities With this safety unit, firefighters will have more protection on the job. The community will have the opportunity to support their local heroes as well as the national heroes. The stressors which are an inharrent part of the firefighter’s job will be minimized, improving their health overall.

8

T = Threats There are no threats to this concept. It is all self-sustainable; it has the ability to be completely engulfed in flames and drive the firefighters to safety with plenty of oxygen, food and water for 24 hours. They will also have access to medical supplies if needed.

RESEARCH

FIREFIGHTER SURVEY

FIRE SHELTER

A field survey was conducted with the following results:

• 100% of the firemen were aware the Fire Shelter is to be used as a last-ditch effort to survive.

• 70% of the firemen were aware the Fire Shelter comes apart at 500 degrees.

• 0% of the firemen have ever personally relied on the Fire Shelter. • 10% of the firemen have actually known of someone who used the fire shelter and survived.

• 70% of the firemen do not feel safe knowing the Fire Shelter is all they have in the event of an emergency.

• 100% of the firemen would like to see a more reliable product to take the place of the current Fire Shelter. The Fire Shelter is not efficient enough.

Upon arriving at the site the team has secured the Rhino1 and has begun laying a fire line along the perimeter of the wildfire. They work quickly to lay down the wide trench while directing the disbursement of water onto the raging fire.

While they continue working a sudden change occurs and without warning the wind shifts directions. Sparks from the tree tops behind the fire line are blown across the forest to the opposite side of the fire line.

But, the real benefit of Rhino1 is in its outer layer. This layer is of a tough, durable, fire resistant material that will withstand heat up to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit to protect the lives of the Hot Shots.

As a mobile unit it is capable of maneuvering through the fire and over debris to a safer location. Just as its natural counterpart will fend off a full grown lion Rhino1 will fend off the fiercest raging wildfire Mother Nature can create.
