Art Deco Aluminum Female Fashion Form Circa: 1925-35 Medium: Aluminum Size: 29 1/2" H A rare life sized aluminum female fashion form from the Art Deco era with elegant, modern lines and a streamlined form. Maintaining an exceptional, untouched, complex surface. Art Deco artists sought an economy of design with roots in Futurism and Modernism. The Roaring Twenties embraced its elegance, functionality and modernity. Though aluminum was an ancient and abundant material, its use in sculpture and design did not take off until Art Deco embraced it as a progressive medium.

Great Lakes Woodlands Reductive Elm Effigy Ladle Circa: 1760-80 Size: 7" OAL; (bowl) 5" W x 4 1/2"

A personal all time favorite piece of small scale sculpture. This enigmatic carving imparts power and purpose. It has an assured and refined form that reminds us of the Modernist work of Brancusi. Illustrated and discussed: Powers, Steven S. North American Burl Treen, Brooklyn, NY, 2005, p. 164

Cast Iron Head with Exposed Brain Circa: 1840-60 Medium: Iron, Lead & Glass Size: 4 7/8" H

From the front we observe a cast iron head with a naively sculpted nose, mouth and deeply set eye sockets inset with glass marbles. From the side and back we are surprised to see an exposed cavity set with a cast and chased lead brain. The purpose (if there is any) is unknown—best guess is that it relates to phrenology (though the brain has no markings or divisions). Illustrated and discussed: Maresca, Ricco, American Primitive, Alfred A. Knopf, 1988, p. 101

Exceptional Painted Tramp Art Apothecary Chest Circa: 1890 Size: Size: 21" H x 12" W

A piece of fine form heightened by a truly remarkable surface. Its complex surface is a perfect storm of paint (green ground with remains of yellow), exposure and age. One board has “SOUP impressed into it (from the crates from which it was made).

Woodlands Ash Burl Bowl with Shouldered Ends A bowl of refined form and execution. The highsided shouldered ends on a deeply tapered Circa: 1800 body—the whole being masterfully executed. The Size: 11" x 7 3/8" x 4" bottom reveals that “something extra,” a finely carved concave foot.

French Carved Boxwood Treen Pipe Case Circa: 1670-1700 Size: 8 3/4" L One of the finest early treen cases I have examined. Full with exceptional carvings throughout—the front headed by a mythological being representing the winds, and the shaft carved with a fleur-de-lys, a bishop with mitre and sceptre, baby Jesus, a monk with baby, vines and swags. Maintaining an exceptional surface.

James W. Washington (1909-2000) Thrasher Medium: Stone, Driftwood Dated: 1966 Size: 14" L x 3 1/4" D x 5 3/4" H James W. Washington, Jr. was an AfricanAmerican folk artist who was known for his engaging works in stone. Born in Gloster, Mississippi, Washington settled in Seattle and became a leading member of the Northwest School.

Washington's work is represented in numerous private and public collections, including The Smithsonian, the Whitney, SFMOMA and the Seattle Art Museum. Literature: Karlstrom, Paul J., THE SPIRIT IN STONE: THE VISIONARY ART OF JAMES W. WASHINGTON, JR., Bellevue Art Museum, 1989.; Ament, Deloris Tarzan, IRIDESCENT LIGHT, University of Washington Press, 2002.

New England Painted Halma Game Board Circa: 1890 Size: 15" x 16"

A rare board with a modernistic Paul Klee-like composition. George Howard Monks, a surgeon at Harvard Medical School, invented the game Halma in 1883/1884. It is based on the English game Hoppity (1854).

American or English Portrait Miniature Circa: 1800-20 Medium: Gouache on Ivory Size: 1 1/2" H

Charming pendent portrait of a young boy with mullet (maybe a young Davy Crockett?). Silver case with gold gilt edge.

Erotic SnuffboXXX Leda and The Swan Circa: 1780 Medium: Gouache on Ivory Size: 2 3/4" D The cover depicts a famous French painting by Francois Boucher, entitled Leda and The Swan painted 1741/42. The subject is based on the Greek myth and interpretations have been painted for centuries. Typically, the subject is portrayed with a phallic swan who overtly or with some subtlety sexually overtakes Leda. Boucher's interpretation was a bit of a sensation, as he portrayed the scene in a much more Sapphic nature. The artist of this box copied Boucher's painting and continued the narrative in the secret bottom.
