INTRODUCTION This project has been designed to create an environment that is stimulating for children’s imagination and makes reference to the fictional worlds found in children’s literature. Key texts included Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and BFG, Mary Norton’s The Borrowers, Lewis Carol’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, as well as references to nursery rhymes such as Hansel & Gretel and Jack & the Beanstalk. Common themes of the literature were change in scale, palaces & Queens, and chocolate and cakes. These themes form a design language for an architectural proposal at Buckingham Palace, London. HM The Queen Invites about 8000 people every year to large tea parties in the palace gardens, this existing narrative of a giant tea party is retold through the architectural composition. TEA FOR TWO(hundred) has dual function; in the winter months it stands as a folly in Buckingham Palace Gardens, and in the summer months it transforms into a summer school; playing host to two hundred hand picked British Child Prodigies. The guests spend the whole summer at the Palace; Sleeping, Eating, Washing, Studying, and Playing in the new building which is designed to look like a setting for a giant Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to have Tea for Two. A vast table accommodates a Kitchen and Dining room with a rooftop terrace, and forks and spoons below hoist up hanging bunk beds. A huge feather-filled table cloth unfolds at night to insulate the sleeping quarters. A Glass bottomed Swimming Pool acts as a roof for a huge bathroom where the ceremony of bathing is celebrated, the steamy atmosphere is exaggerated with a bespoke ventilation strategy. Outside there are mobile changing rooms and a mini-amphitheatre, which are shaded by two colossal deck chair canopies. The canopies have small pockets, in which the children can study privately. Vegetables and flowers are grown on the canopies, and there is also a system of hose pipes to heat water using heat from the sun, the pipes weave in stripes just like the pattern on a deck chair. All the beds in the design are also multifunctional as lifts, there are some fireman style sliding poles, and slings draped from the shading canopy. These details intend to provoke an imaginative interaction between the children and the architecture so that they will have more fun during their stay and soak up some creative atmosphere for their summer studies.
The focus area of this report will be - Section 2 Building Construction, fabrication and Materials All the investigations take into account the important client HM Queen Elizabeth II, who would wish to be a champion of the best British Craft, and all design & materials should be fit for royalty. The Building will be prefabricated and assembled as quickly as possible in Buckingham Palace Gardens so as not to disturb the Royal Family.

Section 01 - Building Form, Systems, Planning and Context Introduction to building forms and systems from conceptual studies and design development to general arrangement plans and sections. Taking into account building height restrictions, protected view corridors, masterplanning, circulation routes and fire escape strategy.
Conceptual Studies
Delightful Assemblages The formal language of the architecture is derived from assemblages of everyday objects: colourful and suggestive they distort scale and provoke a re-imagining of their function and inhabitation and relate to themes of children’s fiction.

Design Development
Just ignore the Puddle, it’s never too wet for a picnic in England! Design development played with the idea of giant scale elements, they would be composed to the effect of a Tea for Two, where the two Royal Thrones are substituted for the quintessentially British deck chair (from the London Royal Parks) a service of tea, Cake and Liquorice Allsorts. Of course no British summer picnic would be complete without some rain or a big wet puddle! The Elements of the compostition are interpretted as expressive programmatic elements, arbitary “objects” are eliminated.

Transparent Pool Floor - Construction Principles

Schematic Schedule Of Structural Elements This is the schedule used as a laser-cutting list to produce the 1:50 scale model of the structure of elements B_01-B_06. The modelling technique and CADCAM production are similar to those that would be used to fabricate the full scale elements. The advantage of using digital fabrication (laser-cutting & CNC milling) is that it can allow the designer to be more sculptural with a higher degree of accuracy.

Ecotect Analysis Data visualisation of thermal gains from solar radiation, under the deck chairs there is a cool microclimate without strong direct sunlight. These provide spaces for performance, picnics, changing and beds. It is important to keep the bedroom environment cool as the inhabitants will be taking afternoon nap-times, and would be uncomfortable in stuffy or humid space.

Environmental Strategy Overview
Hose pipes left out in the sun - Environmental Systems Overview Using water to capture and store energy from the sun, the heat is then transferred into a thermal mass heat store to be used at night, warm water is then fed into the pool. The system is open looped, but water is filtered and treated regularly. A separate system heats water for the baths, and greywater is recycled.

Philip’s Chair is an open-loop system that heats the pool water and charges the thermal mass store, it also includes water treatment and filtering, utilising rainwater collection (year-round) with mains for topping up. When the curtain comes down On a warm night the beds are free to hang in a pleasant breeze to reduce stuffiness and reduce the risk of poor sleep. A heat insulating curtain is deployed during cooler parts of the night , to create an enclosed thermal zone. The bunk beds can also be hoisted up underneath the thermal mass store, which will be radiating heat throughout the night.

Insulation Types
Insulation Varieties. Architectural walls and floors in the basement are insulated with ordinary Celotex Foam, whereas the Night-Time Curtain is insulated to 20tog with Goose Feathers. Bedding is Eider Down. With the suggestion of upgrading to swan down for pillows (since the association to the Queen). All feathers are to be harvested humanely and/or as a result of normal slaughter for meat.

A Good Old Traditional Contract Top: Diagram of contractual relationships in a bespoke traditional contract. Calculating the net & gross area to help quantify the size of the project. Tea For Two(hundred) is largely a landscape proposal so therefore appears to be inefficient in Net/Gross area.

Estimate of Contract Value
Using the building to estimate a contract value, for the “Building” part of the project a high end specification will be required and since the building is in central London all building costs will be much greater. An estimated construction cost is £4500per sqm. Other elements such as the pool and brick paving are much cheaper at between £500-£2000per sqm.

Big Ball Pit - Surface manipulation and illusion of no balustrade Early sketches exploring the possibility of an intermediate zone between rooftop and parapet. For this design it would be an aesthetic disaster to include an 1100mm balustrade around the edge of a flat “Table Top�, a ball pit acts as a safety zone before a sunken 1100mm balustrade. The floor surface around the perimeter of the ball pit has a bumped texture (similar to a pedestrian traffic crossing) in case any visually impaired person were to be at risk of falling in by accident.

The contrasting colour of yellow brick emulates the well known hazard pattern of yellow stripes.
