ANNUAL

REPORT

Pebble Beach & Carmel, California

President’s Letter Dear Friends, With the fall dedication of the new Pirate Pool on the Pebble Beach Campus and the unveiling of the expanded Carmel Campus STEM classrooms, Stevenson was able to fulfill two critical needs for our

facility on the same site as the old pool — in nine months. If you haven’t seen the beautiful infinity-style pool and surrounding patio area, check out our Facebook page or better yet, come back to campus for a visit (and a swim).

extensive interdisciplinary program

Built in 1964, our pool had been nonregulation for the last 20 years with depth and dimension too minimal to be competitive. Over that time many of our loyal swimming and water polo families have lobbied for an upgrade. Even though we agreed with the need, the school was not in a position to allocate the funds it required to complete the project. Then last fall, the Chrissi and Mike Morgan Family pledged a substantial and very generous lead gift to get the pool project off (or rather in) the ground. In what can only be described as a Herculean effort, a team of architects and pool designers, Stevenson staff and coaches, and an

The Haynes Family Fund Est. 1990 In 1990, the Haynes family created an endowment for faculty enrichment and professional development, particularly in support of the English department at Stevenson. The family chose to honor the memory of Aunt Brenta Haynes Slater, whose three grand-nephews were Stevenson graduates: Jim Merritt ’67, Geoff Haynes ’68, and David Haynes ’70. Ms. Haynes Slater was a life-long lover of English literature and gardens, a description which belies a fuller telling of her curriculum vitae. According to great-nephew David Haynes ’70, Aunt Brenta, who was born in 1888, graduated from the University of California in 1913. She was born in San Francisco and lived there during the 1906 earthquake, spending some time in the aftermath camping out in Golden Gate Park along with thousands of others. After WWI, she reviewed movie scripts for Fox. Not surprisingly, she was an adventuresome traveler. In her 70s, she took a world cruise during which she rode camels in Egypt and an elephant in Thailand. Robert Louis Stevenson would have been proud!

“I attended the Photoshop World Conference and Expo in Orlando, Florida, during the long spring break in April. It was thoroughly worthwhile. I gained more confidence in my abilities and knowledge of the endless volume of information available. “ — R. Cole Thompson, Ceramics/Photography

FACULTY ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCES “I worked at Rutgers University’s Field School in Italy performing archaeology at an ancient Roman villa. I grew as a scholar, an archeologist and an educator. In my classes, I work to engage students by showing the context and relevance of Latin through exploring the Roman world and its culture and art. Having first-hand experiences and photographs to share demonstrates that Latin is not a long-dead language confined to musty textbooks and stuffy libraries.” —Butch Malec, Latin & History

“I interned at Stanford University in the Athletics Development Department working on the annual giving campaign for young alumni. I was also an event manager on game days within the Facilities, Operations, and Events Department. I had the opportunity to work the San Jose Earthquakes vs LA Galaxy professional soccer game at Stanford Stadium and this fall I am working football games.” —Kelly Burnett, Associate Athletic Director

“On our trip to Caye Caulker we worked to nail down the logistics of taking a student group over our February break. On this cross-cultural learning experience tied in with ocean conservation and exploration, students will learn about reef ecology as well as spend time with local high school students in their growing (but tiny!) high school named Ocean Academy.” — Mark Tretter, Science Department Chair

“The STEM conference opened my eyes to the possibilities within STEM education. We piloted STEM in 5th and 6th grades and it was obvious from the conference that we could do even more. STEM is so new for everyone that we at Stevenson are able to create our own cutting edge program. It is really unique to be able to work across disciplines and age ranges to promote STEM fields for children.” — Kirsten Matsumoto, Science & STEM Program Coordinator Grades 5/6

The entire Carmel Campus faculty and staff experienced a 10-hour Master Class training with innovator and educator John Hunter. He is most wellknown for his award-winning documentary and book, World Peace and Other Fourth Grade Achievements.

Admiral Pullen had a distinguished military career, parts of which he shared with students each year on December 7th. As captain of the destroyer, the Reid, he was an eyewitness and survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He and his crew managed to open fire and down one of the attacking planes. They also were able to get the Reid into the open ocean, saving it from destruction. Ever since hearing the Admiral’s narration, Jon Elliott ’73, shared, “it has been my personal tie to that event.”

Esther Miller ’14 “Stevenson is my family, it’s my home,” says Esther Miller ’14, who growing up in a military family never lived in one location as long as she’s been boarding at Stevenson. The head prefect of Day Girls residence hall, Green Key member, varsity basketball player, and the coordinator of the more than 40 campus clubs, Esther is a positive and driven force at Stevenson. She is a top student in her Japanese 5 course—and considers Shinobu Nagashima, her teacher of four years, a mentor and friend. Esther has been inspired by her studio art courses and the new Art History Advanced Placement class and plans to pursue a college degree in the Fine Arts. She thinks she might like to be a museum curator or a fine art restorer. But she’s open to being surprised by whatever opportunities college may bring.

Students like Esther and Chris make Stevenson better, stronger.

The $3.2 million committed to financial aid in 2012-13 helped us bring a total of 179 students to Stevenson, to enrich and diversify our school community.

Chris Williams ’14 Comfortable with the fact that athletics “aren’t really his thing,” Chris Williams ’14 prefers to talk about his love of nature. He enjoys bird watching, hiking, observing wildlife, astronomy, and kayaking on the open sea. Taking Oceanography with Andrew Czerny this year has reinforced his desire to major in zoology in college. Chris’ adventurous nature has taken him to Nicaragua and Panama the last two summers to strengthen his Spanish language skills and spend time immersed in new cultures. He is taking Spanish 5 this year and hopes to continue developing his familiarity with the language. “Stevenson is not an opportunity many people get to have,” says Chris, who also acts as tour guide for prospective students through the Green Key program. “I’ve matured here. I’m more independent and I know I’ll be ready for college.”

Andrew Nielsen ’01 and President Joe Wandke before the Grade 8 commencement.

Alumni Return to Speak at 2013 Commencement Andrew Nielsen ’01 was the speaker for the Carmel Campus commencement. He is an internationally renowned hip hop artist, known as MC Lars. Nielsen’s unique style is marked by his infusion of literary components into his intellectual and witty raps. Nielsen’s career has roots at Stevenson, beginning with an assignment in Biff Smith’s English class. Asked to write a parody of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Nielsen submitted a rap and then performed “Rapbeth” during assembly.

Susan Slusser ’83 addresses the Class of 2013

Speaking at the Pebble Beach commencement, Susan Slusser ’83 is the Oakland A’s baseball beat reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle and the President of the Baseball Writer’s Association of America. Slusser stated in her 1983 senior yearbook that her ambition was to “own the Boston Red Sox.” Although she hasn’t achieved that goal (yet), her accomplishments in the competitive and fast-paced sports writing industry make her both a pioneer and a role model. Bill Kondrat ’68

Bill Kondrat ’68 on Supporting the Samuel F. B. Morse Society “All the schools I have graduated from (Stevenson, Stanford, Thunderbird, and UC Berkeley) are very good about asking for money. And, if they catch me in the right mood, I give sporadically to Stanford, Thunderbird, and UCB. But I always give to Stevenson because I truly feel Stevenson contributed more to my education (both in and out of the classroom) than any of the other schools. For the same reason, Cheryl and I have included Stevenson in our estate planning.” “Stevenson also prepared me for the education that was to come later. If I had not gone to Stevenson, I would never have been admitted to Stanford, so there’s that too.” “I earmark my contributions to the Ricklefs and Admiral Pullen scholarship funds because I appreciate what those two did for me and because I think helping other students to have the opportunity I had is a very good use of my money.” — Bill Kondrat ’68 2012-13 Annual Report

The renovated middle grade classrooms at the Carmel Campus provide flexible, expandable space for more cross-curricular learning. Advanced technology (including plasma screens, Apple TVs, ELMO visual projectors, and more), a dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) lab, and separate math and science labs have transformed the school’s facilities and enhanced the faculty’s ability to do what they do best — teach and inspire! 18

Alumni Association Leadership William J. G. Griffith IV ’89 Alumni Association President Will Griffith ’89 is in his second year serving as Stevenson’s Alumni Association President. With more than 20 years of experience in finance, he is bringing leadership, innovation, and financial expertise to this important board position.

The Stevenson 20FOR20 Campaign’s goal is to reach 20% alumni participation in the Stevenson Fund by June 30, 2014. Donations of $20 are needed from 1,300 alumni to reach this goal. Stevenson’s alumni giving participation is at 5%. Compared to Thacher (56%), Cate (52%), Santa Catalina (17%), York (16%), and Webb (24%), this is extremely low. We know we can do better — and every gift truly makes a difference in the day of a life of a Pirate. To make your gift and learn more, go to www.stevensonschool.org/20FOR20

“For me, Stevenson provided a broad educational and athletic foundation from which I continue to draw on a daily basis in both work and in life. Stevenson supported my passion for learning and achievement, something I found to be truly transformational. I am delighted to support Stevenson in continuing with their core educational mission: Preparing students for success in college and beyond.“

“RLS is a legacy of love, inspiration, and loyalty which has inspired me personally and my family to support the RLS/Stevenson School tradition of developing and nurturing young minds and spirits to become the best possible scholars that they can be. The RLS experience for our family is truly indicative of this philosophy because Stevenson School provided me the path of success in life and has now continued that success with my sons, Alexander ‘11, and Nicholas ‘16. We are forever grateful for the dedication of all RLS teachers, administrators, employees, volunteers, and trustees past and present.”
