On the first day of classes in 1952, four teachers and 18 boys gathered by the large fieldstone fireplace in Douglas Hall to hear from Mr. Ricklefs about the future he envisioned for his new school. “We will struggle along at a slow pace,” he said, but promised that one day they would be proud to be part of what he called “a great adventure in learning.” When Ricklefs welcomed his first students, the campus included 17 undeveloped acres with only five buildings: two dormitories, an outdoor stage, and Douglas and Silverado Halls. Turn the pages of our 2013-14 Annual Report to Donors to learn and see more about what we’ve become today.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

to show athletic and artistic prowess. But the business model was outdated and the entire operation hung in the financial balance.

2

With the help of a committed board of trustees, a supportive alumni body, a trusting faculty, and a hopeful parent community, we created a road map to put Stevenson on secure financial footing, which became my primary objective. Along the way we continued to work on the curriculum and hire excellent faculty to inspire our students. And still, there were those times when we all rolled up our sleeves for emergency maintenance work, or wherever we were needed to lend a hand.

Dear Friends, In my early days in independent schools (including The Blake School in Minneapolis, Minnesota), headmasters were called on to do many tasks related to the school’s success. Much of the focus was on developing an academic curriculum, hiring (and sometimes firing) faculty and staff, finding and keeping good students, and working with the board of trustees to develop and implement policies and the budget. And occasionally, we were even needed to fix the boiler or drive the bus, which happened when I became headmaster for the first time at Tampa Prep in 1979. When I arrived on the Monterey Peninsula in 1983 as Robert Louis Stevenson School’s new headmaster, RLS’ number-one priority was fixing the budget: The school was in a difficult financial position. We had less than $500,000 of liquid assets and struggled from month to month to make payroll. On the other hand, Stevenson had already earned the reputation as a respected academic institution with notably strong faculty. It had enjoyed a short, but very rich, history with interesting students and alumni, and it had begun

We began on our path to financial security by redesigning the residential experience and replacing our dilapidated dormitories to help us attract more boarding students. We added boarding girls and this increased our numbers, giving us the opportunity to broaden our curriculum and expand our arts and athletic offerings. And we invested in our faculty through more aggressive hiring and by providing housing for those supporting the residential program. All of this was designed to improve the overall experience for our students, the happiness of our families, and the pride of our alumni, and ultimately, we believed, the stability of our future. This plan has proven its success. And all of this was possible only with the help and financial support of our entire Stevenson community. You, our families and alumni, invested together in Wilson, Silverado, Day, Atwood, and Barrows residence halls. You have rallied to contribute funding to build The Rosen Family Student Center, to hire additional faculty, to upgrade the facilities and classrooms at the Carmel Campus, to build the first passive faculty house, and to open the new Pirate Pool. We could not have done it without you. Congratulations, and thank you. Even this past school year illustrated how you have helped us keep the momentum going.

Classroom renovations at both campuses were aided by your support: the second floor of Talbott Academic Center at Pebble Beach and the transformation of the multipurpose room into three classrooms at Carmel. In addition, the annual Stevenson Fund edged over its goal and provided financial aid, faculty enrichment, and program enhancements for all of our students. I have been fortunate over these past 32 years to have worked with many generous friends of Stevenson, and most of you appear in the pages of this Annual Report to Donors. We have completed these remarkable initiatives together, with gifts large and small; sometimes with many donors, sometimes with fewer. But we have succeeded: We have operated in the black for more than 20 years in a row, our endowment now tops $30 million, our balance sheet is strong, and we enjoy competitive enrollment at both campuses. I feel confident that we are leaving Stevenson in sound financial shape for the next leadership team. Naturally, a school’s work is never really done — and that is certainly true for Stevenson. We still have much to do, in the next eight months, and the next eight years, for that matter, and it will surely require your help and that of the entire Stevenson community. Thank you for what you have done and what you will do in the future. And thank you for trusting me to fix the boiler, drive the bus, and to take my turn and lead this truly special institution. Sincerely,

Joe Wandke President, Stevenson School

Jim and his wife Mary Jane Shearer Kinney were descendants of early Idaho pioneers in agriculture and banking. Strong advocates of education and civic responsibility, they championed the case for education in rural Idaho and were recognized on a state and national level for their philanthropy. Both believed that there was nothing more important than a good education, and they provided scholarships for many deserving young students over the years. Jim read Robert Louis Stevenson as a boy and thought it a fine name for a school. Mary Jane, who died in 1995, would have agreed with him and been thrilled that her grandson graduated from Robert Louis Stevenson. Jim died shortly after his gift to the school. His family is grateful that he chose to honor Stevenson in this way and is so very appreciative of the amazing gratitude of the recipients whose careers have been enriched by this fund.

“This past July, a grant from Stevenson’s Faculty Enrichment program made it possible for me to participate in an outstanding certification program in Vichy, France, for experienced teachers of French. I was in a group of French teachers from countries all over the world, including Egypt, Mexico, Angola, and Haiti. We shared ideas and practiced new teaching strategies with one another. As a member of the Stevenson language department, I take great pride that my colleagues consistently look for new and more effective ways to reach our kids. Making the material meaningful and exciting is at the heart of our objectives. The experience in CAVILAM provided me with a wealth of new ideas that will enrich the quality of my courses.” — Kevin Schroedter, French/Spanish

“There is something to be said about getting away from life’s hectic routine and going out to a beach with a canvas and easel and losing yourself in the sights and sounds of God’s natural beauty to create a painting that will capture the essence of the landscape. This summer I had the opportunity to take a three-day oil workshop with Maui artist Julie Houck. I painted three consecutive days for three hours a session at ‘Baby Beach’ in Kihei, Maui. This was my first time experimenting with oils and it was a lot more difficult than I had anticipated! Luckily, my teacher was great at explaining the medium and with persistence and a sense of inspiration, I was able to create a beautiful seascape painting. I look forward to teaching my students the concepts I learned and practiced during my workshop.” — Christy McDaris, Art

“I was privileged to attend ‘Why History Matters’ at Cambridge University in England, thanks to Stevenson’s faculty enrichment program. Besides rejuvenating my own passion for history, the seminar equipped me with practical tools for examining historical evidence and for looking at the writing of history more critically that I can implement in my lessons at Stevenson, thus enhancing our students’ experience in the classroom. In particular, students will learn explicit skills for evaluating primary sources and for weighing the degree to which textbooks present information in a balanced manner.” — Cleve Thayer, History/Mathematics

SUPPORTING TEACHERS & TEACHING

“I began the new school year with inspiration and fresh ideas, having attended the annual conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in Panama City, Panama, where I had opportunities for exchanging ideas and teaching tools. One of my favorites was how to use song and folklore in the classroom. I am constantly looking for ways to motivate students and enrich their experience with authentic cultural material. The opportunity to hear different accents and lexical variation, and to converse in an informal setting always motivates me as a Spanish teacher; my own language skills continue to evolve, and I learn specific expressions and other nuances of the language unique to the region that I incorporate in my classes.” — Pam Keindl ’00, Spanish

“I was overjoyed to partake in a printmaking course at The London Academy of Art. It was an extremely stimulating time for me, having the opportunity to visit so many galleries and museums. The course itself gave me a new appreciation for the art of printmaking and how much work goes into what seems to be an easy and effortless style of art. I know my students will enjoy what I have in store for them.” — Sally Russell ’83, Art, PK-8

“It was an amazing experience to camp with 400 physicists, telescope builders, and professional and amateur astronomers for four nights at Mount Lassen. Even though it rained the first night and was cloudy the second (the uncontrolled parts of science), the last two nights were like living in the best planetarium show ever. The observing was incredible and the conversations over breakfast or dinner or the presentations in the evening were thought-provoking. I am already thinking of planning an Eclipse 2016 viewing trip to Oregon, Idaho or Wyoming — and I returned with a few things that will make our class observing list for Astronomy Spring 2015.” — Ron Provost, Science

“In my nine years here in the role of teacher and coach, I have come to appreciate and cherish the Stevenson community. Faculty and students alike are encouraged to foster a passion for learning and achievement. This past summer, I received my master’s degree in sport management at the University of San Francisco. The endowed faculty enrichment at Stevenson has given me a wonderful opportunity to grow professionally and personally. I am incredibly grateful.” — Kelly Burnett, Associate Athletic Director

“I attended three conferences — math, robotics, and physical computing/maker activities. I took the physical computing class and the maker activity class because professionally I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. I succeeded! Both classes were hard for me; I’m not “wired” for that material, but they were fun, and I came away with a handful of ideas for differentiating instruction and options for kids who are wired that way. For me, the biggest gain from the math conference was getting a chance to hear Dr. Yeap speak and leaving the conference with a new lens through which to see math. I was definitely inspired and excited about teaching math this year, and I think my students are feeling a higher level of enthusiasm about learning math.” — Chris Kramer, Grade 4 Teacher

Frank Keith: Legend & Legacy In 1962, Frank and Barbara Keith moved to Stevenson, where Frank became assistant headmaster and teacher of history and economics. He and Barbara also became in loco parentis to their own six children and hundreds of others in their 36 years on campus. In 2012, to honor his 50 years of service, the Keith Scholar Endowment Fund was created to provide financial aid to students who otherwise might not be able to attend Stevenson. In 2014, Stevenson alum Jerry Westheimer ’58 proposed a matching challenge to take the Fund to $100,000. Jerry promised to match dollar for dollar every gift to the fund between January 1 and June 30, 2014, up to $25,000. The response was immediate. People who remembered Frank for his interest and caring over the decades gave, Jerry matched, and the fund ended the year well above the initial goal — and more than double its value from the year before.

“Stevenson has become a second home to me over the years. I’ve had incredible opportunities, made lifelong friends, and have grown into a capable and independent young woman who is ready for the future. I cannot thank Stevenson enough for fostering my development and passions.” — Auriana Woods ’15

“Stevenson is important to me because it challenges me to step outside my comfort zone and push my boundaries. During my time at Stevenson, I have had so many new experiences and opportunities that I would never have imagined before coming here. Stevenson is truly a place that brings out the best of me.” — Tivon Sadowsky ’15

“Stevenson has been a second home to me and a place where I have grown academically and as a person. This school has given me the freedom to pursue my passions, such as dance and science, and the opportunity to be curious and explore other areas.” — Melanie Barrios ’15

“Stevenson has truly become my home away from home. With the support of my friends and teachers, Stevenson provided me with a safe and comfortable place to grow both as a student and as a person.” — Kasey Thaxton ’15

Supporting Stevenson Through the Samuel F. B. Morse Society O.C. “Joe” Hognander first learned of Stevenson as a language student at the Defense Language Institute (DLI) in the early 1970s. Subsequently, he was assigned to the US Naval Postgraduate School and became a Monterey resident. He says, “It’s been a pleasure to watch Stevenson grow and improve over the past 40 years. I’ve been impressed with the consistently high quality of its administration, faculty, facilities, and students.” As a 15-year member of the Church in the Forest, Joe has appreciated having a closer view of the fine work Stevenson

has been doing. He says, “Although I divide my time between Pebble Beach and Edina, Minnesota, it’s always gratifying to see how the school enriches the community as well as its students.” “One of my favorite quotations is ‘A civilization flourishes when its citizens plant trees under which they will never sit.’ I believe that it is essential for all of us to ‘plant’ those ‘financial trees’ to ensure institutions like Stevenson continue to flourish and benefit others long after we are gone. It’s for that reason I have included it in my estate plans,” Joe says.

New Carmel Campus Classrooms With a rising enrollment, specifically in the middle grades, the Carmel Campus needed additional classes to maintain its low teacher-student ratio. Last summer, the multipurpose room was renovated into three classrooms for language, science, math, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). The new classrooms provide the flexibility, space, and resources for a more robust robotics program and after-school programs as well.

Audrey and Robert Talbott Academic Center Renovation The renovation of the Audrey and Robert Talbott Academic Center, the hub of academic life on campus, is completed. Work was started on the ground floor in the summer of 2013, and the second level was finished this most recent summer. The wooden paneling — familiar to many students and alumni — was removed and replaced with brightened walls, improved lighting, new chairs and desks, updated technology, white boards, and more storage space for faculty. Several infrastructure improvements were also made to enhance the learning environment for students. A modular Harkness-style table was also introduced in an English classroom, allowing faculty the opportunity to experiment with different teaching methodologies.

Stevenson Speaker Series Continues In the spring of 2013, past parent Mady Deininger attended the Stevenson screening of John Hunter’s “World Peace and Other 4th Grade Achievements” at the Osio Cinema in downtown Monterey. Inspired by both the educator and the movie, Mady wanted to find a way to bring “energizing” educational speakers like John Hunter directly to the Stevenson community. She met with Head of Carmel Campus Molly Bozzo and within days, they’d booked John Hunter to come to Stevenson to speak and host a workshop with faculty. “We both just had the attitude of ‘Let’s make this happen’,” recalls Mady. This past summer, Ashley Merryman, award-winning co-author of NurtureShock and Top Dog, was invited to Stevenson to speak to more

than 250 parents, students, faculty, and members of the community in Keck Auditorium, and spend a day working with Pebble Beach and Carmel faculty. Mady and husband Joel Peterson’s support for faculty enrichment and community education, in addition to funding from the school, has begun a back-to-school speaker tradition. “From soup to nuts, Stevenson is an extraordinary place,” says Mady. “We’ll never forget our experience here and are excited to see how this program will evolve.” Next summer, Stevenson is proud to host educator and psychologist Dr. Joann Deak on August 24, 2015.

Head of Carmel Campus Molly Bozzo, Ashley Merryman, and Head of Pebble Beach Campus Greg Foster

“I have realized that ‘paying back’ is a notion of appreciation, but more importantly, the deed is actually ‘paying it forward.’ To help make Stevenson a great institution for students who want to make a difference in life is definitely my fortune and honor, and maybe the best way to express my gratitude for everything I have received here. The same notion applies to other things in my life. As a Stevenson parent, I am sure that my son is in the very good hands of diligent and caring teachers, and he will begin some friendships among the students here that will last a lifetime. And I am sure that all the good traditions and virtues of Stevenson will also be passed on to him. This is a great legacy.” — Vincent Ma ’83

“There was no period that had a more definite and positive impact in my life than my four years at Stevenson. The educational environment and human interaction were foremost in creating who I am today. So it’s very worthy and logical for me to want to repay that amazing experience. I am proud to help make possible the creation of that incredible opportunity for another young woman or man that was so fortunately bestowed upon me. Go Pirates!” — David Ladd Wilson ’64

“While I’m still figuring out what exactly ‘success’ is, I think it has a great deal to do with curiosity and compassion. Upon reflection, no institution has embedded these ideals within me more than Stevenson. I’m honored to contribute.” — Ben Holber ’07

“Stevenson taught me to think outside the box, to push my limits, and to find my true passions in life. The lessons the school gave me stretched far beyond the classroom, whether that was backpacking through the wilderness with my peers or performing on stage. Stevenson taught me to be a leader and gave me the courage to share my own voice and opinions. I am proud to say that I am the person I am today because of my many mentors within the community and the drive Stevenson gave me to pursue my dreams.” — Kendra Calhoun ’14

“Like most alumni, I know first-hand the Stevenson community is unlike any other — from academics to arts and most importantly its belief that every student has potential to succeed. With a Kindergartener at Stevenson Carmel Campus, I am experiencing Stevenson a second time, and what fun it is! Seeing this innovative and dynamic environment in action, my belief in the Stevenson culture is reconfirmed more than ever. I support and will continue to support Stevenson School.” — Dana Bambace ’91
