LE MANS DURING THE 1920S BENTLEY WAS OUTSTANDINGLY SUCCESSFUL IN BOTH RACING AND SETTING NEW SPEED RECORDS, GRABBING MANY FRONT PAGE HEADLINES. BENTLEY FIRST WON LE MANS IN 1924. FROM 1927 TO 1930 BENTLEY WON EACH YEAR. W.O. was clear in his reasons for supporting motor racing - gaining publicity, generating sales and establishing the Bentley marque. “I would have been perfectly content to see our cars circulating round Le Mans in inglorious solo solitude as long as the Daily Mail gave us their front page on a Monday morning!� In 1923 W.O. worked with ‘Bentley Boy’ John Duff, to prepare his Bentley and lent him the Bentley Works driver Frank Clement for the 24-hour endurance race. W.O. travelled to see the race and it was then W.O. claims Le Mans got into his blood. Bentley’s racing success was achieved by thorough preparation and the ability to continuously learn from experiences. Each year Bentley improved their engines, pit procedures and team discipline. In 2003, after 73 years since Bentley’s last win at Le Mans, two Bentleys entered the epic 24-hour endurance race. At 4pm on Saturday June 14 the race began with the two Bentley’s taking the lead. The number 7 car put in consistent laps, while the number 8 car set the fastest lap of the race. And so, at 4pm on Sunday June 15, two Bentley Speed 8s came first and second at Le Mans, almost 83 years to the day that the two Speed Sixes had achieved the same. It was a day that those who witnessed it will never forget. The following Wednesday, the number 7 Speed 8 was guest of honour at a celebration dinner held at the Savoy in London, the same venue and identical menu and drinks list as the Le Mans dinner in 1927.

BENTLEY CONVOY TAKES ‘TOUR DE YORKSHIRE’ An impressive convoy comprising 30 gleaming Bentleys enjoyed a taste of the Grand Depart when it travelled along part of the route of the Tour de France, courtesy of JCT600 and Welcome to Yorkshire. Twenty customers of JCT600 Leodis Court in Leeds, together with some of Welcome to Yorkshire’s Y30 corporate partners, took part in the event in may 2014. The convoy preceded the world’s leading cyclists on Stage One of the famous race, taking a route from Harewood House to Simonstone Hall in Hawes and back via Ripley Castle.

JCT600 also used the occasion to raise funds for its chosen charity for 2014, the Association of Young People with ME (AYME). “Like much of the county, we’re really excited that Yorkshire will soon be welcoming the world’s greatest cycle race,” said Michael Carr, general manager of JCT600 Leodis Court. “However, many of our customers prefer to travel in style on four wheels rather than two, so we organised this more leisurely tour, taking in the beauty of the Yorkshire countryside the cyclists will ride through, but travelling in comfort in one of Britain’s best-loved and most luxurious cars.”

THE CONTINENTAL GT3 The Continental GT3 is powered by a race-prepared and dry-sump version of Bentley’s powerful but efficient 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, with many components carried over from the road-going engine. Developing up to 600 bhp in unrestricted race configuration via a motorsport engine management system, the V8 provides the GT3 with highly competitive power in a compact and lightweight package that’s perfect for racing.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a carbon fibre propshaft to an Xtrac six-speed sequential gearbox with a limited slip differential, mounted as a transaxle for optimised weight distribution. Gear actuations are completed via a pneumatic shift system, controlled by paddles mounted to the steering wheel. A double wishbone suspension configuration front and rear, fitted with four-way adjustable racing dampers, replaces the standard road-car

air springs. The steering system features hydraulic power-assistance, while braking is via ventilated iron discs combined with six-piston calipers on the front and four-piston calipers on the rear. The exterior of the car features a comprehensive aerodynamic package, to maximise downforce with optimised drag. A top-mounted carbon fibre rear wing provides rear downforce and stability, while a carbon fibre splitter balances the aerodynamic forces at the front of the car. Revisions have been

made to the bonnet, bumpers, fenders and sills in order to optimise the car’s drag coefficient and to assist with engine cooling. With the removal of the leather and wood interior trim, the production electrical systems and advanced refinement materials that make the Continental GT such a capable Grand Tourer, the Continental GT3 weighs in under its target of 1300 kg. Despite the race-specification, the GT3 remains a hand-crafted Bentley, with the steering

wheel, door pulls and seat all hand-trimmed and stitched by Bentley craftspeople at Crewe. The design has been completed by a specialist team of engineers from Bentley Motors supported by the Continental GT3 Technical Partner, M-Sport Ltd1. Managed from a dedicated motorsport facility base at Bentley’s Crewe factory, an additional design office was created at M-Sport for the detail design stages and build of the first car.

The Continental GT3 now starts its programme of developmental track work, focussing on optimising the car’s performance based on simulations and refining the car’s abilities. Once homologation with the FIA has been completed, the GT3 will enter its first development races before starting full competition in the FIA Blancpain Series in 2014.

orse racing is a high profile, worldwide industry, with more and more people becoming involved in the sport for personal pleasure, and also for business. Many companies are now buying and sponsoring their own horses, both for advertising and entertaining clients and staff. Brian Ellison is a well established and highly successful dual purpose racehorse trainer. He has superb training facilities in Malton, North Yorkshire and is one of only a couple of trainers in the country to have installed a Kraft 'water walker', a highly beneficial training aid. With Brian's growing success, he has taken horses across the globe, having runners in Ireland, France, Dubai and Australia, including in the Melbourne Cup. Although he is yet to win this prestige race, it is high on his agenda and he strongly believes that given the right horse, and an owner who shares his ambition, he will one day do just that. Becoming an owner is easy. Brian can assist with the purchasing of horses and has a selection for sale, including some 2 year olds for 2015. Prices of these range from £6,000 to £200,000 +VAT, but others can be sourced. When you become an owner, you become a member of a fascinating club. There's the fun of buying and possibly naming your horse, choosing your colours, watching your horse on the gallops in the early morning light (and rain!), and, of course, the thrill and anticipation of being in the paddock before the race and the winners enclosure after. Whether it's flat or jumps racing, win or lose, the action is electrifying – it's second to none – and you’re right in the thick of it.

The familiar power lines and rear haunches – echoes of the original 1950s R-Type Continental – have even sharper radii to create highly distinct surfaces, bringing the feel of a truly coachbuilt car to the new coupe. The GT coupe’s look is bolder than ever. The classic Bentley matrix radiator grille is more upright, while the headlamp design, in traditional four-lamp format, has exquisite jewel-like detailing including eye-catching, LED daylight-running lamps. At the rear, Bentley signature ‘floating’ LED lamps extend around the corners of the wings, emphasising the new coupe’s width and purposeful stance. The track is wider by 41mm at the front and 48mm at the rear than the first generation model. The bootlid design has a powerful ‘double horse-shoe’ motif, reminiscent of the Bentley Mulsanne, while flared elliptical exhaust tailpipes reinforce the GT’s sporting credentials. The shape of the GT coupe’s body is also more aerodynamic following extensive wind tunnel analysis. In conjunction with a range of extensive underbody refinements (including wheel arch and exhaust aerodynamic aids) the GT’s coefficient of drag has been reduced to is just 0.33 Cd and the low level of lift at the front and rear axles mean greater stability at higher speeds. The GT is specified with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, with, the option to upgrade to 21-inch designs. Three styles of wheel are offered – a 20-inch five-spoke version and two 21-inch Elegant and split-rim Sports variations, which come in a variety of chromed and painted finishes.

A totally redesigned combustion system (including combustion chamber, inlet ports, fuel injectors, spark plugs, and compression ratio) promotes a much faster and more controlled combustion process. Through combining these advances with new variable valve timing and optimised turbocharger control, torque output of the engine has been pushed to record levels – 1,100 Nm (811 lb.ft) from 1,750 rpm. The swell of torque from low engine speeds builds to a new peak power output of 537 PS, enough to drive the Mulsanne Speed to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) – an unrivalled figure in the ultra-luxury sector. The 0-60 mph sprint is covered in 4.8 seconds, with 0-100 km/h taking just 4.9 seconds. The connection between the car and driver has been the focus, and extensive validation with both keen drivers and professional chauffeurs has proven the new setup. A new “S” mode gives the driver even more control, and maintains the engine speed above 2,000 rpm so that the turbochargers are always ready to deliver instantaneous performance. An extensive recalibration of the engine management system has yielded benefits beyond increased torque and power. The cylinder deactivation system, that runs the engine as a V4 during light load, has been retuned for smoother transitions between V8 and V4 for even greater refinement. This work combines with a new gearbox control strategy and the engine hardware improvements to give a new level of efficiency for the Mulsanne engine. Meeting the new EU6 emissions legislation, and designed to also meet the upcoming US LEV III standards in the future, the new powertrain records 342 g/km of CO2 on the NEDC drive cycle – a 13% improvement on the current Mulsanne. The ensuing fuel economy improvements have extended the fuel range of the new Mulsanne Speed by 50 miles (80 km).

A CHASSIS SYSTEM TAILORED TO THE DRIVER To deploy the effortless power and acceleration on offer in the Mulsanne Speed, an even more driver-focused Sport suspension mode is included. While the Bentley and Comfort suspension modes provide a comfort-focused and fully compliant chassis setup, the Sport mode stiffens the all-round air suspension for improved body control and adjusts the steering dynamics for greater feedback and accuracy. The driver can also choose to individually match steering, chassis and engine tunes according to personal preference through the Custom setting. Through this new setup, the Mulsanne Speed builds on the abilities of the signature Mulsanne model, being able to switch from a communicative and enjoyable car to drive at pace, to a relaxing, comfortable and exceptionally refined limousine.

Bentley returns to the icy north of Finland for Power on Ice 2015, the flagship experience that elevates the concept of ice driving to the extreme. The Continental GT3-R completes the most powerful Bentley line up yet, making its debut on the frozen lakes piloted by four-time World Rally Champion and Bentley Boy, Juha Kankkunen. As exhilarating as it is exclusive, Power on Ice is a four-day event that allows guests to push a range of Bentley cars beyond the limitations of every-day driving. Running

throughout February 2015, two full days of extreme driving delivered by Kankkunen and in-car tuition from the vastly experienced Bentley Ice Driving Team instil advanced techniques on the ice. Only years of experience can ensure total understanding of the art of ice-driving, which is why each ice track is personally designed by Kankkunen, before being ‘shaved’ into the six-foot thick frozen surface using specialist equipment – creating a new and exciting experience, even for returning customers.
