1985-86 - the season when Liverpool became only the fifth mem.hers of soccer's most exclusive club - the other members are Preston North End, Aston Villa, Spurs and Arsenal - by winning the elusive Double of League Championship and FA Cup. The Championship was one of the closest and most exciting for years. By the first week in October, Manchester United had opened up a ten-point lead at the top of the First Division, having won their first ten matches. Picture 6 shows Craig Johnstone scoring the goal which earned Liverpool a draw at Old Trafford in October - at which¡ point United were still undefeated - hut injuries to key players like Bryan Robson, plus the relentless pressure of Liverpool and Everton, gradually whittled United's lead away. A month earlier, Liverpool had won a hard-fought Merseyside

derby by the odd goal in five, and picture 5 shows Ian Rush scoring Liverpool's second that afternoon at Goodison. Player-manager Kenny Dalglish, in his first season in charge at Anfield, played only 17 full League games, often preferring to manage from the bench (picture 7) hut what a vital part he played, on and off the pitch. It wasa't until Liverpool's final League match of the season, against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, that they clinched the title. Picture 3 shows Craig Johnstone threatening the Chelsea defensive pairing of Paul Canoville and Doug Rougvie, hut it was that man Dalglish who scored the only goal of the game, and bis delight (picture 8) was obvious. Afterwards, he held on tight to the Canon League trophy while team-mates

Bruce Grabbelaar, Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen danced for joy (picture 2}. A week later, and it was FA Cup final day against arch-rivals Everton. Top League marksman Gary Lineker opened the scoring, hut Liverpool carne back with a goal from Craig Johnstone and two from Ian Rush (seen slatting the second past Bobby Mimms in picture 1, despite the close attentions of fellow Welsh international Kevin Ratcliffe). Kenny Dalglish didn't get on the scoresheet that day, hut he wouldn't have been worrying about that as he and Ian Rush showed off soccer's most famous trophy after the match (picture 4). It was Liverpool's first FA Cup win since the days of Bill Shankly in 1974, and one thing's certain - it won't be easy for anyone to take it away from them in 1987!
