THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

The Football League is 100 years old in 1988! There were only 12 clubs originally, and the first five League games were played on 8 September 1888. This is Panini's birthday tribute to the League - here's to the next 100 years!

CENTENARY MATCH

The celebrations started on 8 August 1987 at Wembley, when a Football League XI, managed by Bobby Robson, took on a Rest of the World XI, managed by Terry Venables and featuring some of the greatest names in world soccer today, including the brilliant Diego Maradona, captain of World Champions Argentina.

THE PLAYERS So many great players have graced the Foot ball League during the past century, and we've picked three of them to feature here. In the 1920s, the goalscoring hero of Mer seyside was Everton's Dixie Dean, who in 1927-28 scored 60 League goals - still the record and unlikely ever to be beaten. In the sixties and seventies, two of the names which stood out were Jimmy Greaves and George Best. Greaves was a goalscoring dynamo who excited the crowds during spells with Chelsea, Spurs, West Ham and AC Milan, while Best's electrifying hall skills thrilled the Old Trafford fans-and everybody else! Huddersfield Town with Herbert Chapman (top left)-1924-25

THE MANAGERS There have been many great managers, but amongst the giants are Herbert Chapman, Brian Clough and Bob Paisley. Chapman, seen here with Huddersfield's 1924-25 team, led the Yorkshire club to three suc cessive League Championships between 1923 and 1926, but even before the third title had been won, he moved to Arsenal and repeated the hat-trick between 1933 and 1935. Brian Clough also won the League title with two different clubs, Derby in 1972 and Forest in 1978, and guided Forest to Euro pean Cup victories in 1979 and 1980. Bob Paisley is the most successful manager in post-war soccer history, having managed Liverpool between 1974 and 1983, during which time the club won six League titles, three League Cups, three European Cups, and the UEFA Cup once.

THE CLUBS

As well as great players and managers, there have, of course, been some great teams, and among the greatest are Manchester United, Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool. Featured here are Manchester United's famous "Busby Babes" of 1956-57 -the great young team that was decimated by the Munich air disaster of 1958 - the brilliant Spurs Double team of 196061, the powerful Arsenal squad of 1970-71 another Double team, and Liverpool's 1985-86 team, which won the League title and FA Cup in Kenny Dalglish's first season as player-manager! And we shouldn't forget Preston North End, who won the Double in the League's very first season - 1888-89, and of course the pre-War Arsenal and Huddersfield squads managed by Herbert Chapman.

SCARBOROUGH In modem times, it has always been difficult for clubs to join the League from outside, but all that has changed now, with automatic promotion for the top club in the GM Vau.xhall Conference at the end of each season, at the expense of the Fourth Divi sion's bottom club. The new system was introduced for 1986-87, and Scarborough became the League's newest members in this, the Centenary season!
