2017 Spring Semester 4th Year Design Studio

Based on the reciprocal thinking of the long history of energy, material and architectural form, the study of thermodynamic architecture attempts to re-establish the contemporary design method and evaluation system to reflect the lack of consideration of the factors of climate and environment. This studio focus on factors in our environment that can affect the form of the building and the thermodynamic assessment of it, such as air, ventilation, temperature, materials. About this topic, we basically setted five steps:research, preliminary prototype establishment, prototype development , material research and implantation to the urban. The site of the former site of the Shanghai power company is an area contains three main attributes: waterfront, historical, and industrial hesitage. We must focus on the thermodynamic issues and the local issues at the same time.We first generated the prototype from the study of radiator, which is an idea learn from the climate adaption of Bentota beach hotel. Then we generated the tectonic prototype on the basis of our deeper research and the modular theory , so that we can do the implantation to our site after. In whole, we basically generated a mulit-function museum within art, history, creative functions. Which is with comfortable experience, also a museum connect the old and the new, means using the original chimney on the site as the core of space and thermodynamic, to connect the new buliding and the old plant. From the diagrams you may know how we proceed the design exactly. 06

"Division and In-between" Construct building with topography, secular space with sacred space. Site: Jiangju mountain, NanJing, China Site area:195 m2 GFA:323 m2 This project is expected to explore the association and interconnections between topography and building, between secular space and sacred space by the issue of "division and in-between". It is important to explore the issues between space perception, body performances in the first year about Architecture study. In addition, the preliminary acknowledge about construction are also part of the teaching. We were required to design a vacation house for one person and his/her family from the following-a painter, a book pulisher, a philosopher, a sculpture maker, and a tea dealer. And I decided to go with the painter. By doing so, I do a research about a painter's life and an interview to a real painter who named Jun Leng. He is a realism painter,His works was famous because of the details, he can be creative to materials like metal, leaf or mud. Therefore, I designed this hoilday house on the basis of this character. He has a family with his wife and one thirty years old daughter.A house within two bedrooms, a workshop and a meditation room will be required. After that, a quiet mountain area facing the lake, with trees surrounding at the site should be appropriate. Espacially, a meditation room is settle on the east side of the house, I made it a little far away for the living area, hoping to create the sense of ceremony on the way to the room. When in the morning, the sun rised up and the sunlight will get into the room, and the area of the light is bright but others are dark.

"School Hub" Regenerate vitality, genrate complexity for the centre of the campus. Site: Siping campus of Tongji University, Shanghai, China Site area:5463 m2 GFA:4120 m2

For the reasons of delivery companies and land use issues, the former address of the student activity center of the school has already became a shell that without vitality. Except from specific actvities like going to shower, receiving deliveries, etc., the place can not provide a perfect spaces for after class activities. In order to satisfy that, we need to build a new one no only for social and work, but also for cluture and education, daily supplies. The site is base on the former site. It is in the centre of the campus, with a memorial park next to it, between the education area and dormitory area. And we need to build a "school complex" within spaces like supermarket, ATM, theater, offices, exhibition and so on, and also provide convenient traffic condition so that can relieve the peak times inside the school. How to balance the spaces differences and optimize the current circumstance of the former address are the main focus. The result is to put a big mass positive buliding and a tunnel that can serve two mass flows--foot passengers and cyclists. Seperating the active(public) spaces and quiet spaces apart, put them into ground floor and second floor, also try best to serve different sequences of spaces usages.

"Flux and Reflux" Renovate the old famous along river street of Hongkou, Shanghai. Site: Hongkou bund area, Hongkou district, Shanghai Site area:85771 m2 GFA:188411 m2

The site is located at North bund area of Hongkou district, Shanghai. This area has many kinds of building types and functions, especially the Linong old houses, they were basically surrounded by residential apartments and offices’ buildings. Also, the situation of the area is intense that, the river is not under well usage, and the bad environments surrounding. But most importantly, the areas have the floor problems when there is bad rainstorm weather. To slove the issues,we come up an idea of “Flux and Reflux”.We excavate more distributaries from the Hongkou river, to lead more water ways to the area, to create more flexible interesting spaces such as market square and lake square and to decompress the water level what it is storm weather at the same time. Which means the water level will change and the functions will change along. When the water level is high, they become normal small rivers like drains for water splitting and also landscapes for the areas; when the water is dry, they will become pedestrians and leisure area like café and for barbeque. From different states of the river and timetable, we created plenty of spaces to echo the site and the historical building form. To echo the idea of "SPONGE CITY", a"sponge park" is required. We have a clear concept that to make this area more valuable and more convenient, but also want more amusing spaces to support the sponge city idea, the new Shanghai city master planning, but more importantly, to let the people know our designing intention and get benefit from it.

Design statement: The site is located at North bund area of Hongkou district, Shanghai. This area has many kinds of build38functions, especially many Linong old houses built there, and they were basically suring types and rounded by residential apartments and offices’ buildings. Also, the situation of the area is intense, which is mostly because of the Hongkou river of the site is not under well using, and the bad environments along the riverside badly influent the site. And most importantly, the river surrounding areas always cannot safely get through the floor problems when there is bad rainstorm weather. Our goal is to change

"Smash and Integrate"

Explore the "mixed-use" thesis in magacity of China--Shanghai.

Site: North Sichuan road business district, Shanghai, China Site area:42552 m2 GFA:93536 m2

City growing fast and everything in the city has already becoming crowed. All of these phenomenons emerged the overspeed development of China. "Mixed Use Development" suits the circumstance of Shanghai very much. There are over seventy-two urban complexs located in Shanghai with different types so far, and they will only be increasing. In whole, building and planning an urban complex might solve some kind of the issues for an area. Specially, our site located in the style constructions conservation area of Shanyin road area, with a hundreds years history park--LuXun park, also a famous tourism spot--Tianai road and the Duolun road. To implant an urban complex in this area is a bold move because of the history. If an urban complex can intervene to solve issues like neighborhood relationship, vitality of the area, etc.. WHAT CAN WE DO? We have discovered that, a block can be subdivided by its nearby roads, then the several functions of the buildings within the block will also be realized by subdivision and transformation in Shanghai, which is also an self-organization about mixed use. After, we worked out a concept about "smash and integrate". To samsh for the volume of complex near the old Linong houses for comfortable scale at the street, also means to help to bring the locals take part in the complex; then to intergate the functions of the typical urban complex like hotel, retail, office etc.. As a special spot, a conservation old building may be the spotlight of the project, saving one of this at the site as a creative shopping area should be appropriate.
