Origin Lamp

This lamp has been created to celebrate the cord, the life-line of every lamp, in a way that is both elegant and outstanding. Inspired by science and erected through artistry, it harks back to old vacuum tubes, uh-oh Spagettios, and middle school biology class among other things. The ORIGIN Lamp can be anything you see in it and placed anywhere you see fit.

Modern Style and Performance for the “Goddess”

Comfortable, curvaceous, sleek

Detail oriented, over molded

Dual grey tones, high performance, stainless steel

“I am a confident entertainer and I genuinely like to have people come over to my place.”

Style “I keep up with what is fashionable and trendy today.”

GODDESS

Performance “The brands I buy say a lot about me as a person.”

Design the mill to be self sufficient Eliminating manual readjustment and ancillary tools

Design the mill to improve stability Relocating all forces toward the center of gravity

Design the mill to be easier to use Providing comfortable gripping and better product mapping

Concept 1 Put both hands at a 45 degree angle, causing the forces to go toward the center of gravity

Concept 11 Grip on top directs forces down the center of gravity

The use of a side-crank will not tip mill

Aesthetic Model

Push rod together and release into place

Place on top of a bowl

Drop in cooked produce

Mill using the crank on the side

Stability Grate is lowered into the bowl, lowering center of gravity

Stationary hand applies force toward the center of gravity

Milling now occurs inside a cylindrical grate

Two curved “tongues” revolve inside powered by a side crank

Self Sufficiency Curved “blades” bring food up, around, and back down over the

grate with every revolution, eliminating the need for manual re-

adjustement, never missing a piece.

Traditional examples of outdoor architecture such as gazebos, tents and patios are far from ideal work environments, and provide little support for our portable electronic companions. Moreover, gazebos and tents visually connote leisure, and are therefore not taken seriously as university class or business settings. There are several advantages to conducting work outdoors. Working outdoors during pleasant weather drastically reduces electricity consumption and the related expenses – HVAC and lighting are provided at no cost by the Sun. Working in a shaded area under the sun can also be more enjoyable than working under fluorescent lights. Our smart devices allow us to work anywhere, but all outdoor furniture archetypes are based on leisure activities. Picnic tables, café tables, gazebos and park benches are not taken seriously by academics and professionals who seek legitimate outdoor work environments. With the Outdoor Office my aim is to develop realizable concepts for furnishing outdoor work spaces on college campuses, corporate headquarters, rooftops and public parks, and to promote the idea within the design community that working outdoors is a highly intelligent, enjoyable and realistic activity, with enormous environmental benefits. The problem of working outdoors has gone unaddressed by architects, designers and manufacturers of furniture. Institutions might ultimately be interested in a product that solves this problem, but first such a product would have to gain cultural acceptance through exhibitions and publication in journals. This is a realistic avenue towards realization, and one that could be done on a relatively low budget. In light of the environmental crisis, the burgeoning “green” industry, an immediate need for drastic emissions reductions, the creation of an Outdoor Office is completely necessary. Such a design would provide an occasional alternative to working in interiors that have to be lit, heated or cooled. An outdoor work environment is the natural next step for a culture with portable work tools, and could increase quality of life for millions of people through out the world. During four research and design workshops held by Jonathan Olivares at ENSAD Paris, Savannah College of Art and Design, Vitra Design Museum Summer Workshops at Boisbuchet, and CENTRO Diseño in Mexico City, students worked in their immediate outdoor environments to create appropriate office and classroom settings. Simultaneously, staff at Jonathan Olivares Design Research studied the environmental benefits of working outdoors, existing references for outdoor structures such as Native American Long Houses and Agricultural High Tunnels, and designed Outdoor Offices concepts. This research and design work answered several questions: What are the needs of contemporary work and the advantages and challenges of working outdoors?
