RE-IMAGINING MAIN STREET TOWN OF CLAYTON, NORTH CAROLINA
TOWN OF CLAYTON STREETSCAPE MASTERPLAN PROJECT OVERVIEW
Clayton, a rapidly growing town on the outskirts of Raleigh, wanted to make-over the streetscapes of its Main Street District. In recent years, their downtown has become a destination for festivals, street fairs, farmers’ market, musical performances and local art walks. While these have been successful events, the limitations of the District’s existing streetscape hinder the Town’s ability to accommodate future growth and create pedestrian safety conflicts. Additionally, the Town believes an improved streetscape will benefit the long-term economic development of its downtown. Stewart led the assessment of the Main Street District’s streets, engage the public and downtown business owners around streetscape goals, make recommendations for improvements, prioritize streetscape projects, and provide a
budget and plan for implementation. As part of the project, recommendations for improved vehicular parking, bicycle connections and bicycle parking are also being provided. Based on stakeholder input, project goals were created that focused on pedestrian comfort and safety, the needs of the downtown business owners and the Town’s overall goals. Project interventions include items such as midblock crossings, a widened pedestrian sidewalk zone, traffic calming elements, pedestrian-scale lighting, street trees and bioretention planters. The Master Plan received feedback and was approved by the Project Steering Committee, NCDOT and the Downtown Development Association in early 2018.

REIMAGINING MAIN STREET AS A VIBRANT DESTINATION, A HUB, AND THE HEART OF CLAYTON.

The
1
Main Street is where business, life, community, history and the arts intersect. It is where you go to watch the parade, take your family to dinner, to shop or go to grab a coffee. It’s where social interaction can happen spontaneously. It’s where you go to explore the community you live in, its unique history and identity, and your connection to it.

ANALYZE
GATHER DATA
VALUES BASED DECISION MAKING In order to judge various design proposals, a series of values were agreed upon with the Town Staff. The values range from pedestrian comfort to business needs and offer a matrix by which to formulate the most fitting design solution. Developing this series of project values offers a comprehensive platform for all stakeholders to agree and thereby critically judge interventions without specific biases.
