CORRECTION: Our story on page 15 in the last issue incorrectly stated Eleni Kounalakis debated the role of Walter Mondale during the 1984 campus election. Eleni has since corrected this, as she played the role of a fictional Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, and regrets any confusion caused by her somewhat hazy 30-year old memory.

SPRING 2018 3

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ST. FRANCIS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL, The 2018-19 school year launched a month ago with tremendous energy and enthusiasm as we welcomed 1,080 Troubies to campus – one of our highest enrollment numbers in recent history. We feel God’s presence all over this bustling campus. In this issue, we acknowledge those who have helped put us in the excellent position that we are in today and who make our mission a reality for future generations of Troubies. We list our donors, not just for the 2017-18 year, but those who have given substantial gifts over their lifetime or through legacy gifts. We are humbled and grateful for all who have shared their time, talent and treasure to continue our tradition of educating women to change the world. We are excited to share photos from the Class of 2018 Commencement Ceremony and highlight the recipients of the highest awards we give. I know you will be impressed with these amazing young women who have been formed into models of “Pax et Bonum” during their time here. We are so proud of each and every student who walks our halls and discovers her own God-given gifts and talents. Indeed, the Class of 2018 was an outstanding group of young women who influenced our school, lifted each other up, and left an indelible mark on our community. As the Class of 2018 departed for new adventures, we welcomed the Class of 2022 (“Winnie the Pooh”), comprised of 290 young women eager to experience the Troubie sisterhood. A St. Francis tradition begins and ends each year with the song, At the Beginning, which reminds us, “We were strangers, starting out on a journey; Never dreaming, what we’d have to go through; Now here we are, I’m suddenly standing; At the beginning with you.” We’re thrilled to begin this adventure with our newest Troubies. This fall we launch our inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame, recognizing and honoring those individuals who have made a significant impact on the community through their athletic achievements or outstanding service to our Athletic Department. We will induct five individual athletes, one team, one coach and one outstanding contributor (see page 45). We hope you will join us on Saturday, November 17, when we celebrate these individuals and reflect on the proud history of our school. Earlier this year, we brought together a group of women – alumnae, current and past parents, and community members – to develop a platform to bring women of all ages together to inspire, network, and foster connection, extending the spirit of sisterhood for which St. Francis is known. We’re excited to see this vision come to fruition with the introduction of our first “SELFe event” with keynote speaker Rachel Hollis (see opposite page). The “SELF” acronym is based on a rearrangement of the four St. Francis pillars; it is also meant to encompass the message of the permanency of self-worth and the journey to self-improvement. We are looking forward to seeing you at this event on October 28th. Thank you for your continued support of our young women. As you will see in the following pages, we are a vibrant community of faith, excellence, leadership, and service made possible by generous gifts from all of you who believe in our mission. I look forward to another great year and witnessing all the exciting things God will do in us and through us this year!

In the spirit of Pax et Bonum,

ST. FRANCIS ANNOUNCES A NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR

ROXANNE ELLIOTT ’94 Roxanne Elliott, a graduate of the Class of 1994, works for Folsom-based homebuilder Elliott Homes. With four siblings who are also alumni of local Catholic high schools, she continues her family’s tradition of supporting and valuing Catholic education. Bishop Soto selected Roxanne to serve on the Board of Trustees in 2014. Roxanne is a parishioner at St. Ignatius Loyola in Sacramento, where she serves in various educational ministries. We are grateful for Mrs. Kathleen Deeringer’s work with the Board of Trustees in serving as Board Chair for the past two years. In all her interactions and decisions, her love of education, passion for the school, and commitment to our mission were foremost in her mind. Mrs. Deeringer will continue to serve as a Board of Trustee but will pass the leadership of the Board to the new Chair, Roxanne Elliott ’94. As a St. Francis graduate, Roxanne says, “Being an SFHS Board Member is an opportunity to give back to a school that provided me with a solid and enduring spiritual and academic foundation. Much of what I do professionally I learned at SFHS - social justice and responsible citizenship. I now work for a non-profit organization that supports programs for healthcare, education, affordable housing, the environment, and the poor and vulnerable. I have continued to volunteer for many of the organizations, communities, and people I was first introduced to as a student at St. Francis.”

SMILE, IT’S TIME FOR A REAL SELFe! With St. Francis’ rich legacy of raising up women and reminding them that they were “made for more,” we are thrilled to launch our first “SELFe” event. This is a unique opportunity for students, moms, grandmas, alumnae and women of all ages to gather and share their hearts and stories while lifting each other up. We are pleased to host Rachel Hollis, NY Times’ best-selling author of Girl, Wash Your Face, mother of four, and CEO/founder of the popular The Chic Site blog as our inaugural speaker on Sunday, October 28, 2018. Ladies, you won’t want to miss this event! Watch the St. Francis website as more information will be coming soon.

FALL 2018 7

BACCALAUREATE & COMMENCEMENT

8

Our graduates and their families gathered together in celebration on May 22nd for the Baccalaureate Mass on campus and May 23rd for the Commencement ceremony at Memorial Auditorium.

“There is a reason that Faith is the first of our four pillars. Because Faith is the foundation of who we are; it speaks of the life of the spirit and helps us remember that we are not just physical beings, but spiritual beings made to love God, to know God and to serve God. Trust that God’s plan in your life always works for good, even if you don’t understand it. Trust that even though the journey might be outside of your plan or comfort zone that there is a lesson to be learned from it. And if we believe these things, knowing that God is in charge, we will be filled with peace and JOY!” THERESA RODGERS

President

VALEDICTORIAN

GRACE CONLIN Grace Conlin, a graduate of Stella Maris Academy in La Jolla, California, is in the top 5% of her graduating class at St. Francis. She has been a St. Francis Ambassador for the past three years, as well as a part of the Ambassador Leadership Board, and a four-year member of the Model United Nations Team, earning the role of Co-Captain senior year. Grace was also elected as the SBO Ministry Coordinator. She has excelled in St. Francis’ rigorous college preparatory classes, and has taken every AP course in English and History, and still found the time to dance Hula and be a part of the Swim Team. Grace received St. Francis’ highest student honor, the Pax et Bonum Award, and she will be attending the Naval Academy in the fall. The following is Grace’s valedictory address given at the Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2018 on Wednesday, May 23.

I have a letter here. It’s from freshman Grace. At our freshmen orientation, just before going to bed, we were asked to write a letter to our future selves to be read before our graduation. In addition to the outdated meme references and cringy 14-year-old bravado many of us included, we were asked to answer some questions in our letter. One of the questions was, “What are your hopes and dreams for the years ahead”. Freshmen Grace, in large letters with a little smiley face, wrote, “Leave them speechless, Troubie.” Four years later, I may not be leaving you speechless, but I will leave you with a speech.

every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy.” We have each brought something beautiful and essential to this class, and our faith has been the glue that has created the family in front of me today. We have faith in each other. In the best of times and the worst of times, we have been there for our sisters, and our sisters have been there for us. We’ve given each other pep talks, hugs, shoulders to lean on, and to cry on. Our sisters have had faith in us so we could learn to believe in ourselves. Always hang on to that faith. Through it, all things are possible.

This moment is kind of a big deal. This moment is both an end and a beginning. This moment is one we have been waiting for, working towards, and dreaming of since day one. And now it has finally arrived. We made it, ladies.

We are women of excellence too. Our class doesn’t just do things. We do them excellently. We don’t just take notes. We question what is given to us. We debate, observe, and analyze. We don’t just play sports. We win games, tournaments, and championships. We don’t stand by when we witness injustice. We speak up for the voiceless. We seek justice for those who don’t have it. We don’t just dance, or act, paint, draw, or sing. We innovate, inspire, redefine our limits, and defy expectations. We even procrastinate with excellence! We don’t pull late nighters, we pull all nighters. Our excellence is powerful, and the world may try to bring it down. But just keep swimming, Squirts, and always be excellent.

Mr. Bill Hanrahan once said, relationships are built on shared experiences. For four years, we’ve experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly together. We’ve shared moments of great joy: like screaming the words of “At the Beginning” after mass, realizing taco bowls are on the cafeteria menu, Homecoming Week 2017. Today we celebrate the path that we have traveled together for four years, and the sisterhood it has forged. Our journeys continue, but now our paths diverge. Yet, all 247 of us graduate today as Troubadours, and as such we now face the world as women of a certain kind. We are women of faith. We have faith in God, and in the paths He has guided us along. He brought each of us to this beautiful school, and He brought us all to this moment. For that, I thank Him because our little class would not be complete without all 247 of our beautiful souls. First Corinthians tells us, “There is one body, but it has many parts, All of them will take care of one another. If one part suffers, 10

We are leaders too. We lead by example every time we live lives of peace and goodness. We lead by showing love for others and enthusiasm for life. We lead by using our voices in the service of those who don’t have one. The world needs our leadership now more than ever, and I know that you are all more than ready to deliver it. Whoever said the future is female clearly had the honor of meeting a Troubadour. Finally, we are women of service. Martin Luther King once said, “Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul

generated by love.” No matter where your path takes you, live with love. Remember always the love we have experienced together, and service will follow. I’ll say it again because it’s really important. Live always with love, and remember always the love you have experienced. Take a look around. We are surrounded by our family, friends, and teachers who show us how to love every single day. I would not be here, none of us would be here, if not for the endless support of our loved ones. Teachers: you are our superheroes. You teach with a passion that is contagious. You live the Troubie lifestyle day in and day out, and you model faith, excellence, leadership, and service in everything you do. You have influenced us in ways we may not even realize. You have shaped us into the women we are today. In the words of Father Arnold, we thank you, we love you, and we’re sorry (you know, for all the Monday mornings when we were less than conscious and less than enthusiastic about the prospect of education). Family and friends, you have given us each a support system that has made today possible. St. Francis has taught us a lot, but so have all of you. You’ve taught us faith, trust, and love, and we are so grateful. And parents, for close to eighteen years you have been our biggest fans, our best advocates, and our most loyal friends. When we have struggled, you have struggled with us. When we have triumphed, our triumph belongs to you too. We’re getting ready to go our own way, and it’s certainly bittersweet for you to see us leave. But this is only the beginning of a journey that we will travel with you, and that we will travel because of you. To my own family, you are my biggest inspiration and I love you all so much. The closer we’ve gotten to graduation, the harder it has become for me to say goodbye. I couldn’t figure out why until the last day of school. While eating some celebratory ramen with some of the most incredible girls I know, it hit me. Our time at St. Francis has been a collection of moments. Some good, some not so good. But each has shaped us. Each shared experience has strengthened our relationships with each other and with this school. And now, in our final moments as St. Francis students, we have never loved this sisterhood more, and it has never been harder to say goodbye. Today we may end our time as St. Francis students, but our time as Troubadours is just beginning. And in my best Mr. Poggi voice, “It’s great to be an SF Troubadour.” Besides being a traveling minstrel, to be a Troubadour is to live with Pax et Bonum, that is, peace and goodness. It is to be a woman of faith, excellence, leadership, and service. It is to be a young woman who changes the world. This may seem like an impossible task. But I know you can all change the world, because you’ve already changed mine forever. Troubies, this moment is a big deal. It is an end and a beginning. Today one incredible door closes and another one opens. Enjoy this moment, and celebrate all that is to come. Many great moments await us all if we just keep swimming. So God bless and congratulations to the graduating Class of 2018!

GRADUATES’ PRAYER

MARIANNE HAYES Dear God, as we begin a new chapter in our lives as graduates, we reflect on the many blessings that have been given to us and the many more to come. We praise You for Your generosity. When we began our high school journey just four short years ago, we had no idea the inspiring people, challenges, and opportunities that would be put in our path. We thank You for the support of our family, and the encouragement from our staff and faculty. The education we have received at St. Francis is so unique because we are able to put You at the center of everything we do. From school Masses to community lunches and retreats, especially Kairos, the valuable time spent in high school has allowed us to grow closer as a class through and with You. Whether that was in a moment of doubt or reassurance, each experience was a chance for us to grow closer with our alignment to Your plan. We ask for Your guidance as we continue to explore and nurture our gifts. Please continue to bless the Class of 2018 as we go forward to live a life of Faith, Excellence, Leadership, and Service. We thank You for an environment where we learned to rise above whatever comes our way, that our Sisterhood is stronger when we rely on each other and You, that each person’s struggles and dreams are worth sharing and pursuing, to act on injustice so we are a Voice for the Voiceless, to use our gifts for the benefits of others, and most importantly to love unconditionally. God, as we go forth from here to share our many blessings with our new communities, let us be mindful of your presence in our lives and in all those we encounter. With grateful hearts, we pray this in your Son’s Name. St. Francis of Assisi, Pray for us. St. Clare of Assisi, Pray for us.

Marianne Hayes, a graduate of Our Lady of the Assumption School, is an exemplary St. Francis Ambassador and a member of the Ambassador Leadership Board for the past three years, a Kairos student director, and Retreat Team Leader. She is active in her home parish and volunteers her time tutoring at OLA. She has a happy and positive outlook and is a faith-filled young lady who will be an inspiration to all those at Loyola Marymount, which she will be attending in the fall.

SPRING 2018 11

SALUTATORIAN

OLIVIA FU Olivia Fu, a graduate of Brookfield School, aspires to academic excellence in all she does and has demonstrated a love and passion for lifelong learning. She is one of only a few seniors who has earned straight A’s in all eight semesters of high school in all seven subject areas. In addition to her academic excellence, she was the President of Key Club and Girl Up Club, as well as the captain of Mock Trial and Speech. She willingly gives of her time to mentor students on both of these academic teams. Olivia received the Principal’s Pillar of Excellence Award for her for outstanding academic achievements while embodying faith, excellence, leadership, and service. She will attend Harvard University in the fall. The following is an excerpt from Olivia’s salutatory address to the Class of 2018 on Wednesday, May 23. Recognizing our blessings must inspire us to work toward that very end for others, and as God teaches us in Proverbs 31:8, let us be the voice for the voiceless. We live in a historic time of youth activism, and each of us has the power and responsibility to vote and shape the world we want to live in. One that values human rights, community, and justice.

a group of young women, so unique and talented and driven, and to know that you belong here. That we all want only the best for you, and that this is only the beginning of a new journey. We’ve been through so much and accomplished so much together, but now we’re headed to our own bright futures. We’ve got to go our own ways, now.

Each year of high school has sculpted us to become the people we are today – the students strengthened by the pillars of Faith, Excellence, Leadership, and Service. The victories and stresses, revelations and endless fears, have made us the resilient, mature, and insightful students we are now. The Faith we found as freshmen will guide us to where we are meant to be. The lessons of Excellence motivate us to work with diligence, and trust that hard work pays off. Our experiences as leaders will empower us to leave our own mark. And the importance of Service will make our mark one of goodness and charity.

At this time, we are often asked to introduce ourselves. For me, I never really had a fun fact or anything I felt would make me stand out. Sure, I can play the piano and violin, but it doesn’t get the same reaction as, “oh, I’m a competitive horseback rider” or “I’m a hula dancer” you know? So this year, I’ve finally come to saying that I go to the Lady Bird school, which I initially didn’t think was a big deal. Until I started going to college weekends and getting reactions of people freaking out. And that gave me a sense of pride, to know that I go to the school that does things a little differently, that gives its students a sisterhood like no other, and that is special for all that it ingrains in its graduates.

Though many things have changed in the past four years, the feeling of purpose and presence remains the same. You follow in the footsteps of generations of Sacramento students and world leaders, and sit amongst an unbelievably special group of young women. They are some of the strongest people you will meet in your life, and have overcome so much to be here today. I want you to look around at your fellow students, the girls who have been with you every single day – on your best days, when all is good, and your worst. The girls who made time in their day to write you letters, bake you cookies, and listen to you. Look around to the faculty and staff, who supported you in and out of the classroom. Teachers, I cannot thank you all enough for investing your time and effort in our intellectual pursuits. For believing in us, and challenging us to succeed. And finally, look up to your families. Your parents, siblings, relatives – they are the ones who were there every step of the way. Who have watched you grow from day one; who are incredibly proud to see you graduate this day. This is the last time we will all be together as the Class of 2018 St. Francis Troubadours. I want you to remember this feeling of seeing everyone who has supported you one last time. To sit in and amongst 12

Our dreams will change, and our world will evolve – but that’s okay. I believe in us – the leaders, innovators, scholars; the teachers, doctors, lawyers, businesswomen, and artists. I look up to you all, and know there is so much passion and potential in this room. I cannot wait to see you on the cover of Time Magazine and hear all the great things you’ll do, and I’ll say that I was in your class. But don’t just be the next Greta Gerwig – be the best version of yourself that is proud of your roots here, and the future self that St. Francis will be proud of. Inspire the young girls looking up at you. Whether it be four years from now or forty, please know that we will always be cheering you on. And please, remember to take some time to rest, and recognize how far you’ve come. High school and St. Francis mean something a little different to each of us. But may we always be guided by the sense of purpose and confidence that we’ve gained to become our best selves. May we always handle challenges with grace, confrontation with tact, and success with humility. May we never forget our humble beginnings here; may we never take the many chilly mornings and sun-kissed afternoons we’ve spent here for granted. May we always be proud to be an SF Troubadour, and now, show the world what we’ve got!

LEADING BY EXAMPLE

St. Francis Catholic High School is blessed with young women who step up and into leadership positions. The Student Body Officers (SBOs) are the leaders, communicators, organizers, mobilizers, and most importantly, the visionaries for creating the student experience on and off campus. Working together with the Class Officers, they work to promote unity among students and provide a variety of activities that enhance the development of St. Francis students and are consistent with the school’s philosophy. Working under the leadership and guidance of Mrs. Cassy McGreevy, and supported by the entire St. Francis administration, faculty and staff, these student officers develop an understanding of servant leadership, ethical standards and community building.

We caught up with the 2017-2018 SBO team who shared insights for their current Troubie sisters and the leadership lessons they will take with them on their journey. ALEXIS AREIAS: PRESIDENT

Sutter Middle School • University of Southern California “The biggest take away was definitely learning how to make people feel included. It was a big goal of ours to make everyone feel like they had a place at SF and in every activity that we put on. It was hard and it came with time, but it is something SO important to leadership and life in general.”

MARISA FAT: VICE PRESIDENT

Sacramento Country Day School • University of California, Los Angeles “Being an SBO has taught me what it means to be a true servant leader. Not only have I developed skills that will help me throughout life such as public speaking, decision-making, and communication, but I have discovered what it means to be committed to a group of people and to devote as much time and energy to that family as physically and mentally possible. I can now confidently say that I am ready to accept the academic and social challenges that are put before me in college, but I know that I will always stay grounded and carry the qualities that I developed at St. Francis into the next chapter of my life.”

ABBY ERCKENBRACK: SECRETARY

Elizabethtown High School in Arkansas • University of Iowa “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and get involved within the SF community. No matter if it is with clubs, academic teams, sports, theatre, or dance, you will find like-minded individuals who will push you to be and do your best. This is how I really grew to love and appreciate all that St. Francis has to offer.”

AMANDA OSTROM: TREASURER

Holy Trinity School • University of California, Berkeley “My favorite activity this year was Homecoming Prep, which are the weeks leading up to Homecoming Week in which the four classes are tirelessly working to prepare for the various events that week. I loved the creativity and innovation each year, and particularly enjoyed seeing pieces of what the classes were building and planning. Being an officer during this time was wonderful because it allowed us to spend time with each of the classes and anticipate with excitement the culmination of all their hard work.”

JILLIE KATE RANDLE: SPIRIT COORDINATOR

Our Lady of the Assumption School • University of Notre Dame “Through being an SBO, I have learned the power of teamwork. We used everyone’s input in some way and blended all of our ideas together for a final product. We realized that we are all so different, with contrasting opinions, ideals, and strengths, but the point of working as a team is to use each of those differing strengths and ideals to create the best outcome possible… that is the power of teamwork.”

GRACE CONLIN: MINISTRY COORDINATOR Stella Maris Academy in La Jolla, CA • Naval Academy

“I’ve learned the true value of servant leadership. I’ve learned the power of a team, and I’ve learned the power of admitting weaknesses to my team, too. I will be forever grateful for not only the opportunities I’ve been given through Student Leadership, but also the incredible leadership I have had a chance to witness.”

MELIA DOWD: HISTORIAN

Arden Middle School • University of Oregon “Get involved in the St. Francis community, whether that be leadership, theater, sports, academic teams, or clubs. Try anything that interests you and see what sticks. You really do get out what you put into the school, so invest in the things you enjoy.”

LEGACY

Marianne Hayes Clare Ann Squires Hayes ’55 (Grandmother)

Shannon Kane Judith Bagley Kane ’84

WE CAUGHT UP WITH A FEW LEGACY MOMS FROM THE CLASS OF 2018 TO GAIN A LITTLE INSIGHT INTO ST. FRANCIS - THEN AND NOW.

KRISTEN BURKE-TOPPING ’87: MADELYN ’18 & MARY-KATE ’15 SFHS has been an extension of how we have raised our daughters. They both have been challenged academically and have grown in their faith as well as their friendships. I knew from experience that St. Francis would be the best environment for my daughters to receive an excellent education in a safe, nurturing, and faithful environment. I will always be grateful for the amazing teachers, coaches, SFHS families, and staff that have played such an important role in their lives.

JUDI BAGLEY KANE ’84: SHANNON ’18 & KILEY ’21 St. Francis was the right choice for Shannon because it provided her more than an education. She was surrounded by goal-oriented, loving friends that helped her navigate through those formative years. Her teachers were caring and knew her personally. SFHS provided a challenging curriculum that helped Shannon get into every college that she applied to. St. Francis provides a sense of belonging. The education we received and the friendships we made helped define us today. I have made lifelong friends at SFHS and am confident Shannon and her friends will have similar bonds throughout life. We are looking forward to the next three years there with her sister, Kiley. Thank you to all the SFHS staff that so generously gave of their time to help Shannon become who she is today. We are very proud of her!

We currently have 244 students on campus who are part of an SF Legacy, which includes 66 aunts, 8 grandmothers, 72 mothers, and 170 sisters! The Class of 2018 has 97 Legacy relationships.

MARIA BODROZIC McGEE ’79: LILLY ’18 St. Francis gave my daughter the tools and experiences to further her ambitions in life with confidence and gratitude.

BONNIE BEEDE PREHODA ’92: HANNAH ’18 I have so many great memories at St. Francis. One that always sticks out in my head was my freshman homecoming rally. There is nothing more exciting than an SF homecoming rally. For me, St. Francis still feels like home even after all these years.

GRACE LEVY SPENCER ’85: LEXI ’18 & TORI ’16 Both Tori and Lexi knew at an early age that St. Francis was where they wanted to attend high school. It helped that we have a long line of alumnae in our family, including their grandmother Margaret Castaneda Spencer ’55! I knew St. Francis was the right choice because of St. Francis’ excellence in academics, their strong unity in faith, their belief in teaching personal responsibility, having a culture of family, having a strong focus on giving back to the community, and fostering a strong sense of self confidence as women who “will change the world.” We will always be proud to say we are St. Francis alumnae! The friends my girls had during high school will be their forever friends even as they make new ones. I still get together with many of my St. Francis girlfriends and there is a special bond that we have because we are St. Francis sisters. I look forward for my girls to experience this too in the years to come.

We would like to include legacy families from all the Sacramento all-girls Catholic schools. If a member of your family attended Loretto or Bishop Manogue and you have a current student at St. Francis, please update Dawn Winston at dwinston@stfrancishs.org. Deceased

A CELEBRATION OF

GIVING & GIVERS

18

DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

MARYANNE KELLY

DEAR FRIENDS OF ST. FRANCIS, The Annual Report edition of the Pax et Bonum magazine provides a platform for recognizing all of you — current and past parents, students, alumnae, faculty and staff, and our numerous friends — for your partnership in advancing the mission of St. Francis Catholic High School. Together we create the place and programs where our young women can become all that God has called them to be. With your help in 2017-18, we witnessed many wonderful transformations (see the following spread). In addition to the $2,000 scholarship each student received, we were able to provide an additional $1,600,000 in tuition assistance for 30 percent of our families with financial need. Our school was enhanced in countless ways with the creation of a student rec room and leadership classroom, the installation of the new sport court in the Armory, the remodel of the girls’ bathrooms, the addition of carpet squares in the gym for Masses and special events, new faculty conference rooms, the addition of electric car charging stations, and so much more! We also “funded a vision” to build a new outdoor math classroom; this project brought the entire SFHS community together to envision and actualize an environment that would bridge the learning of mathematics with the peace and beauty of nature. Our students really embraced the culture of philanthropy with greater than 70 percent of students participating in our day of giving, Thankful Thursday. They not only raised $5,000 for their Troubie sisters, their energy ignited the entire community resulting in our biggest day of giving yet! Our students also raised more than $17,500 to support other nonprofits in the area and abroad, and our seniors contributed more than $15,000 to student scholarships through the new painted parking space program. As our students and parents can attest, our faculty and staff work tirelessly to nurture and empower young women and instill the values of gratitude and generosity. In addition to their love and labor, this group contributed more than $50,000 for student scholarships and the new outdoor math classroom. Thank you to all who gave of their time, talent and treasure to make the 2017-18 year a success. Your continued investment in St. Francis and our Troubadours provides the essential funds for financial assistance to students in need, enriched academic programs, life changing faith experiences, top tier arts and athletic offerings, provision and upkeep of superior facilities, and other expenses not covered by tuition. If you are interested in donating as part of the 2018-19 year, please visit www.stfrancishs.org/mygift or contact the Advancement Office at 916-737-5033. With enduring gratitude,

WHY I GIVE

ANTHONY SPINETTA “I give to St. Francis to support academic and leadership opportunities for young women in the Sacramento area. The sense of community fostered by SFHS amplifies the school’s academic rigor, and the confidence instilled by four years on this campus shines through whenever I meet a Troubie - from any generation! I give to St. Francis because this school is a local treasure that has enriched our city for nearly eighty years.”

“St. Francis is a gift to the students who get to attend. They may not realize it now, but they will come to understand that their experience was unique. Having St. Francis as a choice is a gift to the parents of this region. Think of all the options: public, charter, private, Catholic (co-ed), and St. Francis. SFHS isn’t a great fit for every prospective 8th grader, but for the girls and families who ‘buy-in,’ it is truly an experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else. “

“I support and contribute to St. Francis High School because I believe in Catholic education. After two and a half years there as chaplain, I experienced their faith formation programs and found them to prepare the students to take active roles of service to their communities. The work of its graduates is outstanding in contributing to the good of the church and society. It is truly a community of faith, excellence, leadership, and service. The education program is well rounded and all inclusive. It lives up to the mission statement. Go Troubies!”

WHY I GIVE  SPRING 2018 31

ALUMNAE GIVING

A gift from an alumna models the culture of philanthropy we are creating at St. Francis. It recognizes the life preparation she received and her desire to ensure our current and future Troubadours have the same opportunities. We are grateful to the alumna listed below and invite all graduates to consider an investment and legacy.

Class of 1948 “I received financial aid all four years of high school at St. Francis which afforded me the education, values and friendships my father and mother wanted me to have. My mother passed when I was three years old and my father promised her a Catholic education for us. Being at a point in my life where I can give back for this gift I hope will afford another student to have the same advantages I did to succeed in her adventure and what an adventurous life it has been for me.”

“I have great memories of St. Francis and the incredible friends I still have from my time there in addition to the strong educational foundation it gave me to move forward in my life. I donate to St. Francis so the school can continue to serve young women in Sacramento, provide them state-of-the-art facilities, and allow those that may not have the financial means to also attend and benefit from all the goodness SF has to offer.”

VICTORIA RUDD ’09 “My time at St. Francis greatly shaped who I am today and gave me the platform to excel in my adult life. Whether it be through the lessons I learned, the friendships I gained, or the sense of community instilled in me, I find my time at St. Francis continues to positively impact my life. By giving, I hope to be able to provide future generations of young women the same opportunity to gain these values.”

“Six years after graduation and St. Francis still feels like home. Stepping on to campus brings back memories of homecoming week rallies, cookies in the cafeteria with lifelong friends and term paper reviews in the quad with Mr. Wootton. These memories and feelings still fill my heart with pride and remind me of a foundational period of my life. To be able to share the Troubie experience with my sister Aubrey ’18, has meant the world. I can’t wait to see her take on the next chapter with the education SF has given her. That is why I give so other young women can receive the gift of sisterhood and the feeling of home away from home at St. Francis.”

GOLDEN GIRLS RELIVE SFHS GRADUATION MEMORIES

Mercedes Martin Azar, Marcia Cecchettini Ceccato, Mary Leonard Conklin, Colleen McKinley Ianni, Nancy Bettencourt Walent, Bishop Jaime Soto, Beth Lenyo McNett, Kathie Owens Cook, & Sandra Doll Neri St. Francis introduced a new tradition this year where our “golden girls” (the class celebrating their 50th reunion) led the graduating class into Memorial Auditorium for the graduation ceremony. This inaugural group of Troubadours not only renewed their connections with each other and the school, they renewed their hope for future generations of Troubadours. “I am still processing what happened to me yesterday afternoon. I was shocked and awed at what I heard, saw and felt. As part of the generation that paved the way for expanded roles and opportunities for the young women of today, I felt such a sense of pride and accomplishment…we did succeed in some very positive Christocentric ways. Listening to the salutatorian and the valedictorian and the way they described their sense of their futures filled me with a sense of hope I have not had for a long time. I tear up as I type this, just thinking about these young women and the environment at St. Francis that taught, mentored and continues to encourage these girls.” -Mary Leonard Conklin ’68 40

SISTER CLAIRE GRAHAM ’55 THE ST. FRANCIS COMMUNITY MOURNS THE RECENT LOSS OF BELOVED ALUMNA After receiving her BA degree in Social Economics, Claire worked as a Social Worker in Sacramento and volunteered at the Stanford home from 1959 to 1976. In 1976, Claire entered the Sisters of Social Service where she worked in ministries in Southern California. She commuted back and forth to Sacramento to continue serving as a board member for Stanford Settlement. In 1986 she relocated back to Sacramento and in 1987 co-founded Wellspring Women’s Center in Oak Park with Sr. Catherine Connell. Referring to her work at Wellspring, Sr. Claire noted, “We didn’t try to change people, we just tried to be with them. I think that there is a huge need for presence in the world, because when we just be with each other, we find the commonality and we don’t find the difference.” In 1997 Sr. Claire “retired” and became a staff member at St. Francis Parish, Sacramento, where she established “Step

Ministry.” In 2002 she “retired” again and founded the Spiritus Center in Sacramento, offering spiritual direction. Sr. Claire also served on her community’s administrative council for a number of years and, in May 2005, was elected as the General Director of the Sisters of Social Service in the United States. “I’ve always been drawn to the underdog – I think that is part of my DNA,” Sr. Claire had said. “I have this new theory that God provides us all with certain DNA inside of us and that is what moves and shakes us through our lifetime.” Sr. Claire responded to the call of God on her life and tapped her unique DNA to serve tirelessly and joyfully. In 2005, Sr. Claire received the Life Achievement Award from St. Francis Catholic High School for her dedication to service in the community. With the entire St. Francis community, we mourn the loss of this beloved alum and servant of the Lord. “Well done, good and faithful servant! . . . Come and Share your master’s happiness.” Matthew 25:21
