YEAR 11
JAMES NICHOLS HEAD
We are proud to be one of the top three girls’ schools for academic results in the area, without being a ‘hot-house’.
At St. Francis’, dreams are at the heart of our philosophy. We inspire every student to dream big, work diligently, and believe in their limitless potential. Our DREAMS approach fosters well-rounded individuals who are poised to make a positive impact on society.
l Deliver a Seamless, Rigorous Education: Provide a stimulating educational experience with a focus on individual care, preparing our students to thrive in a global environment.
l Cultivate Intellectually Creative Minds: Instil our core values of DREAMS: determination, resilience, empowerment, appreciation, and motivation, within a secure environment.
l Foster a Respectful Community: Value the unique qualities of each member, promoting mutual respect, personal and social responsibility, high self-esteem, and self-development.
At St. Francis’, dreams are vital. We encourage every student to dream big, work hard, and believe in their potential. DREAMS is our philosophy and approach, making our students well-rounded individuals who positively impact society.
Our rigorous and supportive teaching fosters intellectually creative minds. Academic success is balanced with personal success, ensuring students’ wellbeing and resilience. By focusing on close individual care, we help students thrive in today’s fast-paced world, enabling them to build strong relationships and maximise their education.
We embed our core values of determination, resilience, empowerment, appreciation, motivation, and security (DREAMS) throughout the curriculum. This approach encourages students to take risks, learn from mistakes, and persist until they succeed.
As students progress, they gain confidence and self-esteem, becoming young adults who express their views respectfully and with self-discipline. This natural development leads to excellent academic results. We are proud to be one of the top three girls’ schools for academic results in the area, without being a ‘hot-house’.
We expect all students to embrace and contribute to our DREAMS ethos. By doing so, they navigate challenges, cultivate determination, and find intrinsic motivation, turning their dreams into reality. At St. Francis’, we believe that with the right support and effort, students can achieve anything. The education and encouragement they receive unlocks their potential, enabling them to embrace their dreams and thrive in all aspects of life.

Students set personalised goals and work diligently to achieve them, developing a lifelong sense of determination by overcoming obstacles and pushing their limits.
Resilience allows students to bounce back from setbacks and face adversity with courage. Through new experiences and challenging tasks, they learn to adapt, persevere, and thrive.
We empower students to discover their talents, passions, and strengths. Through workshops, leadership activities, and projects, they realise their capacity to make a positive difference in the world.
We encourage students to appreciate the world around them, fostering empathy, respect, and gratitude. This appreciation for diverse perspectives creates a compassionate and inclusive mindset.
We ignite motivation by helping students explore their interests and passions. Engaging in activities aligned with their aspirations, they find joy and fulfilment, inspiring them to pursue their dreams with a sense of purpose.
We provide a secure environment where students can be themselves, push themselves, take appropriate risks to develop their character, have their own views and express who they are. Through workshops and teaching they also acquire the knowledge and understanding to develop positive and healthy relationships and the skills needed to deal with potential issues.
St. Francis’ has provided the best environment that we could have wished for, for our daughter to learn and to grow: not only for its commitment to academic excellence, but perhaps even more so as a nurturing community where she has felt valued and supported throughout.
Pastoral care forms the cornerstone of a successful learning environment. Studies consistently show that students with better health and wellbeing achieve higher academically.
At St. Francis’, pastoral care is woven throughout the curriculum and tutor time, fostering students’ personal and academic development. Our comprehensive Personal Development programme, including Relationships and Sex Education, equips students with essential life skills that enhance wellbeing and academic performance. This programme also cultivates character and social skills critical for future success.
Our Personal Development programme emphasises mental health, providing students with a toolkit of cognitive, behavioural, and social skills essential for maintaining and recovering psychological health. These skills become lifelong resources that students can draw upon in various situations.
The strength of our pastoral care lies in the excellent relationships between staff and students. Our close-knit community and small class sizes ensure that staff know each student individually and care deeply about their progress. With two tutors per form group, students receive personalised attention, creating a supportive environment conducive to achieving their full potential.
Issues are identified and addressed promptly, and students have multiple trusted staff members, including the Pastoral Support Officer and a counsellor, to turn to for confidential support.

The speed and scope of changes to the workplace create new demands on schools to prepare children for their future.
As the world changes at an unprecedented pace, it places new demands on schools to prepare children for their future. By the time our children become adults, the world of work will be vastly different. With artificial intelligence becoming an integral part of our lives, a modern education must prepare children for a world where AI will play a significant role.
Skills, alongside pure knowledge, will be crucial in the future economy.
To address this, we are thrilled to introduce our St. Francis’ Skills Curriculum, which adopts a skills and personal development approach from Year 5 onwards. This curriculum prepares students for exams and life beyond them, balancing academic knowledge with the development of critical personal skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability, and analytical abilities.
It is designed to:
l Build self-confident, ambitious young people: By encouraging personal achievement across all subjects, including Arts, Sport, and Humanities.
l Develop modern and global citizens: By ensuring inclusivity, diversity, equality, acceptance, and appreciation are at the heart of the curriculum.
l Help students embrace a changing workplace: By developing core skills of creativity, collaboration, and communication adaptability and critical thinking.
l Empower students with more freedom: By offering significantly more individual freedom than other schools in choosing subjects for GCSE study.
l Inspire students to dream big and achieve their goals: By instilling our DREAMS values: determination, resilience, empowerment, appreciation, motivation, and security.
Each year, our students progress to their universities of choice, with on average 10% to 20% attending Oxford and Cambridge.
At St. Francis’ College, our academic achievements are exceptional, with a long-standing tradition of academic rigour. Each year, our students progress to their universities of choice, with on average 10% to 20% attending Oxford and Cambridge.
We understand that students have diverse strengths and abilities in various subjects. However, we are mindful of research by Mueller and Dweck (1998), which highlights that labels like ‘gifted and talented’ can overemphasise innate talent, potentially undermining the importance of effort. Such labels can negatively impact future academic success if students perceive them as fixed traits.
Our approach is to make opportunities for More Able students available to all, while actively encouraging and guiding those who show particular aptitude. We offer tailored co-curricular activities to extend and refine skills, such as MEDSOC, masterclasses, workshops, Model United Nations, debating competitions, Science STEM Awards, and sporting competitions.
Students may apply to become scholars and undergo a selection process. We offer a range of scholarships, including Academic, Sport, Art, Music, Dance, and Drama scholarships. Successful candidates receive reduced fees or complimentary music/dance lessons.
The Scholarship Programme aims to stretch students beyond the curriculum, celebrate academic achievements, and enhance the culture of academic rigour within the College. In addition to participating in More Able activities, our Scholars attend talks and lectures on an annual theme. Inspired by these talks,
they create their own work, whether it be a written article or a piece in their chosen genre, which they present at a Celebration Evening.
At St. Francis’, our Individual Needs Department is highly regarded for providing tailored support to students with specific learning difficulties, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and ADHD. We are committed to ensuring that all of our students can fully access and benefit from the curriculum.
Our support includes personalised one-to-one or small group sessions with specialist teachers, who are well-informed about each student’s unique needs. These sessions are designed to offer targeted assistance and are integral to helping students reach their full potential. Lessons are customised to address individual learning requirements, focusing on enhancing academic skills and boosting self-esteem.
In addition to core subjects like Maths and English, we provide support in revision and study skills as well as organisational skills. Our approach ensures that students not only receive the help they need to excel academically but also build confidence and effective learning strategies for their future success.

Our commitment to digital learning aligns with our DREAMS values and supports the teaching of a skills-based curriculum, equipping students with the adaptability to thrive in an ever-evolving technological landscape beyond school. Our staff regularly integrate a number of platforms into their lessons, such as Teams, Blooket, Quizlet, Mentimeter, Flip, and Wakelet, and we are excited to explore innovative ways to incorporate AI into our lessons.

We firmly believe in the benefits of child-led play, which allows children to make choices and guide their own learning experiences.
At St. Francis’, our team of qualified Early Years Practitioners is dedicated to providing a warm, welcoming, and nurturing environment that feels like a second home for children. We take pride in working closely with parents and carers to ensure that each child’s unique needs are respected and nurtured, fostering a supportive and collaborative relationship between home and school.
Each day, our team leads engaging small groups or one-to-one sessions tailored to each child’s interests and developmental stage. We focus on promoting learning that is closely linked to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, ensuring that each child’s educational journey is both meaningful and enjoyable.
Our carefully designed learning environment is equipped with a diverse range of resources and activities that captivate children’s attention and spark their imaginations. We firmly believe in the benefits of child-led play, which allows children to make choices and guide their own learning experiences. This approach not only fosters independence and creativity but also helps children develop essential skills at their own pace.
Our practitioners support child-led play by providing ‘scaffolded’ learning opportunities, where adults offer guidance and encouragement tailored to each child’s age and developmental needs. This support helps children build foundational skills, nurturing their growth while planning for their future learning and development. Our goal is to create a dynamic and responsive educational environment where children can thrive, explore, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Being located within the St. Francis’ campus, our Nursery children benefit from the use of the College’s facilities, including the indoor swimming pool, music lessons, and French lessons. Ballet lessons are available from the age of three at an additional cost.
We encourage children to spend time outdoors and we have a dedicated nursery garden where we support each child’s development through planned activities. Spending time outdoors provides enriching experiences for learning and growth.
The Nursery features specially designed rooms for each age group, including a room for three to four-year-olds that encourages curiosity, enables an enriched learning environment, and supports an inquiry-based approach to learning for this age group.
Independence is a key value at St. Francis’ Nursery and is encouraged from an early age. This helps our children become self-motivated and resilient. They develop confidence, inquisitive minds, and a passion for learning, preparing them for the next chapter of school and the wider world.
Our experienced Nursery Manager, Kirsty Colley, would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about your child joining the Nursery. Kirsty can be contacted directly on 01462 416232 or via email: kcolley@st-francis.herts.sch.uk.I

MR JAMES EMANUEL HEAD OF PREP
Our Prep Department stands out from a traditional primary school in several key ways:
l Value-Added Education: Our programme is designed to set your child up for long-term success. Independent Schools’ Council research suggests that a prep school education can provide an equivalent of an additional two years of learning compared to the state sector.
l Small Class Sizes: With smaller class sizes, our teaching is tailored specifically to each child’s unique talents and needs, with regular feedback on their personal development and academic progress to ensure they are always moving forward.
l Extracurricular Opportunities: We offer a broad range of extracurricular activities that allow children to explore and develop their passions and interests beyond the standard curriculum. Whether it’s sports, arts, or other interests, our activities help children build new skills and discover what they love.
l Soft Skills Focus: At St. Francis’, we emphasise the development of soft skills such as effective communication, good manners, and strong interpersonal abilities. Our students learn how to interact confidently with both adults and peers, preparing them for various social and professional situations.
l Broad Curriculum: Our holistic approach to education provides a comprehensive curriculum that helps children understand and appreciate their potential. We encourage them to dream big and work towards achieving those dreams, fostering a love for learning and a drive for personal growth.
The Prep Department inspires children with a future-ready, rigorous, and lively curriculum. We prioritise the core subjects of English, Mathematics, and Science while also offering a holistic curriculum. Alongside these core subjects, our curriculum includes:
In addition to our rigorous academic curriculum, students at St. Francis’ Prep benefit from a diverse array of enrichment opportunities. These activities extend beyond traditional learning, enhancing social, mental, and physical skills while contributing to the vibrant life of the College. Our clubs and enrichment programmes are vital, offering students a chance to expand their learning experiences and build meaningful relationships.
We emphasise experiential learning through immersive, hands-on experiences.
Pupils participate in exciting trips that stimulate their curiosity and create memorable moments to share with family and friends. Our dynamic fixtures calendar includes a range of sports such as cricket, football, gymnastics, netball, tag, rounders, rugby, and swimming. We strive for every Key Stage 2 pupil to be part of at least one St. Francis’ Prep sports team each year, promoting respect and good sportsmanship throughout their experiences.
At St. Francis’ Prep, we focus on nurturing every aspect of a child’s growth, aiming to support not just their academic achievements but also their resilience and life skills.
Our small class sizes and close-knit form groups allow our staff to build meaningful relationships with each student. A buddy system helps younger pupils settle in quickly, and we foster an environment where students feel comfortable approaching any staff member with their concerns, no matter how big or small.
Our dedicated team works collaboratively to ensure that every child feels safe, healthy, and happy, allowing them to thrive both academically and personally. The College DREAMS values — Determination, Resilience, Empowerment, Appreciation, Motivation, and Security — are central to our approach.
We recognise that this stage of development is crucial, and our supportive and stimulating environment is crafted to spark curiosity and meet each child’s unique needs.

We aim to ensure that each student achieves the highest level of which they are capable and leaves St. Francis’ a wellrounded individual, ready to embrace the next stage in their life.
Children enter the Senior School at age 11 and are selected on their academic potential. Our academic achievements are outstanding, and the school has a solid tradition of academic rigour. Our A Level and GCSE results continue to excel year-on-year; they are among the best in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. Although we achieve a high level of success at GCSE and A Level, we are not solely interested in academic excellence; developing social skills, an appreciation of the arts, and ability in sports are equally important. Our expectation is that all students will fully embrace and contribute to our DREAMS ethos and values.
Please do get in touch to arrange a visit to the College and meet our superb staff and outstanding pupils. This really is the best way to see what we are all about and how we transform children into young adults, well-equipped to make the most of their futures, whatever they hold.
Since
our daughter started at St. Francis’ College, we have seen such a difference inher. She is a lot more confident in herself and has really stepped up to the challenge of the additional workload and being more involved in her classes and school life.
MRS JULIA SPENCE SENIOR DEPUTY HEAD
CURRENT PARENTS
Our students consistently achieve remarkable results, a testament to our strong tradition of academic excellence.
At St. Francis’ College, we are dedicated to providing a diverse array of opportunities and a tailored approach that ensures every student can reach their full potential. Our aim is for each student to achieve their highest possible level and graduate from St. Francis’ as a well-rounded individual, prepared to take on the next chapter of their life.
Students join the Senior School at age 11 based on their academic potential. However, at St. Francis’, we are more than just an educational institution; we are a nurturing community dedicated to supporting each student’s well-being and development. Our aim is to cultivate well-rounded individuals who are not only academically accomplished but also confident, resilient, and ready to thrive in all aspects of life.
Academically, we place a strong emphasis on “Value-Added” data, which complements our impressive examination results. This data measures the progress students make from their starting point and evaluates the added value the College contributes to their development. As a small independent school, we are dedicated to helping students of varying initial abilities reach their potential. For example, in the 2023 GCSE examinations, every student achieved at least one grade higher than their expected outcome.
At St. Francis’, we focus on each student’s unique journey of growth. ValueAdded data is crucial in recognising and celebrating individual progress and attributes. It enables us to tailor our teaching methods, provide targeted support, and foster a community that values the overall development of our students.
Our students consistently achieve remarkable results, a testament to our strong tradition of academic excellence. Yet, we believe that true success extends beyond just academic achievements. Our DREAMS philosophy— focusing on Determination, Resilience, Empowerment, Appreciation, Motivation, and Security—plays a crucial role in this balance.
We encourage our students to set their own ambitious goals and build selfconfidence. By integrating these values into their daily experiences, we create an environment where academic success follows naturally from personal growth and a positive mindset.
Our A Level and GCSE results are among the best, consistently placing us among the top three performing girls’ schools in Hertfordshire. Each year, our students go on to their choice of universities, including to Oxford and Cambridge.
The early years at St. Francis’ Senior School offer a diverse curriculum aligned with the National Curriculum, plus opportunities for advanced study. Small class sizes ensure individual attention, fostering a supportive learning environment.
The subjects studied in the first three years include:
During these years, students focus on their chosen GCSE subjects. The curriculum remains broad and balanced, with most students studying nine subjects, allowing for a well-rounded education. This approach ensures that students do not specialise too narrowly before progressing to A Levels
Core subjects for all students:
Students undergo formal assessments at the end of each unit, along with end-of-year examinations. GCSE mock exams are conducted at the start of the Spring Term in Year 11. Formative assessments are continuously used in class to enhance progress. Homework is assigned according to a published timetable.
Parents receive formal written reports annually and are invited to parents’ evenings once a year (twice in Year 11). Regular academic tracking grades are also provided throughout the year.
(Higher Project Qualification)
(non-examination)
Optional subjects (students choose six):
Scan here to see our latest GCSE and A Level results.
Students undergo formal assessments at the end of each unit of work, coupled with end-of-year examinations. In-class learning is enhanced by ongoing formative assessments, ensuring continuous progress monitoring. Homework is allocated according to a published timetable, promoting consistent study habits.
Parents receive formal written reports once a year and are invited to attend an annual parents’ evening. Additionally, they receive regular academic tracking grades throughout the year. Students’ progress is closely monitored by subject staff and Form Tutors.
At St. Francis’, student choice is a cornerstone of our modern curriculum.
Moving away from a rigid GCSE options system, we now offer greater flexibility to accommodate diverse learning needs and reflect the broad value of all subjects. Most students will pursue nine GCSEs, with only three subjects— Mathematics, English Language, and one Science — being compulsory.
Freed from the limitations of fixed subject blocks, students can choose their remaining GCSEs based on their true interests and strengths from a wide range of options.
All Year 10 students undertake the Higher Project Qualification (HPQ), equivalent to half a GCSE. The HPQ is designed to stretch and challenge students, particularly those aiming for top universities in the UK and overseas. It helps develop essential academic skills such as:
Referencing
Essay writing
Creating a bibliography
Creating a presentation
Researching and deploying secondary and primary sources
We emphasise personal responsibility for learning. Every half-term, students receive both an attainment grade and an effort grade for each subject. They discuss their academic progress and future aspirations with their Form Tutors, which supports effective target setting. This comprehensive tracking system helps students identify areas for improvement, see how their efforts lead to higher attainment levels, and offers opportunities to address any concerns. It also ensures they receive personalised support tailored to their needs.
Students plan, research, and develop their arguments independently, with support from a teacher-mentor.
Student choice is a cornerstone of the curriculum and we offer greater flexibility for GCSE options than other schools.
At St. Francis’, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our Senior Enrichment Programme invites students to dive into a diverse array of activities offered during lunchtimes, after school, and on weekends. These experiences are essential in shaping confident, well-rounded individuals ready to take on the world.
Sports Programme
Structured PE is part of the curriculum, supplemented by various extracurricular sports. Students can participate in athletics, cross country, football, hockey, netball, rounders, tennis, and swimming, with opportunities to compete at county and national levels.
Our drama programme features a 330-seat West End-style theatre, offering extensive performance opportunities. Annual productions involve students from Years 7 to 13, with additional non-musical performances for Years 7-10. Students also engage in local competitions and festivals.
The Music Department hosts Associated Board and Trinity exams each term, with specialist teachers for various instruments. Students can perform in termly concerts, join ensembles like choirs, rock bands, jazz groups, and more, fostering leadership and collaboration.
Dance Programme
Dance lessons in Tap, Ballet, and Modern are conducted in our Dance Studio, emphasising musicality, artistry, and technical skill. Students can progress through grades, participate in our biennial charity show, and study up to vocational levels for UCAS points.
Our successful Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme sees many students achieving Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels. Gold Award recipients are honoured at Buckingham Palace. The programme includes expeditions to places like the Chilterns and Peak District, promoting resilience and teamwork.
This highlight of the summer term features trips and activities beyond the curriculum, fostering personal growth, practical skills, and cultural engagement. Students explore new interests, build friendships, and gain broader world perspectives.
Experiential learning through school trips enhances classroom education. These excursions foster cultural exposure, teamwork, independence, and practical application of classroom knowledge.
Staff so generously give their time offering children opportunities to learn and increase their confidence through numerous trips within the UK and abroad.

This involves an external examination at the end of Year 12 and is recommended for students targeting top-tier universities.
Additionally, all students undertake an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) throughout Years 12 and 13. The EPQ helps you develop independent research skills and prepares you for the expectations of university life. With guidance from your EPQ Supervisor, you select a topic to investigate. After initial sessions teaching key research skills, you will independently complete the majority of your project by the start of the Autumn Term of Year 13 and deliver a presentation on your EPQ journey at the start of the Spring term. Most students present their findings as an essay, though other presentation formats are available.

Our Boarding House has a happy and homely atmosphere, supported by experienced boarding staff and academic tutors. Boarding also comes with a built-in social life as the students will live with friends and participate in a myriad of activities – a recipe for fun.
Although most of our students enjoy boarding full-time, there are plenty of other options at St. Francis’, including day, weekly and flexi boarding. We offer many types of accommodation: younger pupils typically share with roommates, while Sixth Form students have individual study bedrooms.
St. Francis’ College has a long tradition of welcoming students from the UK and all over the world. Our international students are integrated into every aspect of College life; they follow a full curriculum and participate in a wide range of social events and activities.
We are proud of the cultural diversity of our boarding community. For some of our international students, joining us allows them to improve their English language and experience a different culture; while for others we provide the opportunity to study for UK qualifications (GCSE and A Levels), and gain access to leading UK universities. Whatever the reason, all UK and international students are fully integrated into our whole school community and fully enjoy our boarding school experience.
Our Boarding House is located on the top two floors of the main building. All the essential parts of the school are within easy reach of the accommodation without leaving the building: the Dining Hall, the Library, the Chapel, and all the study rooms. With this combination of both academic and pastoral support, this is what we call home away from home.
“We have always been and continue to be extremely happy with the boarding provision. The support from the boarding staff has been greatly appreciated.”

For those interested in community service, opportunities such as assisting with the Kanyike Project offer rewarding experiences that broaden perspectives and build a sense of global citizenship. These activities are designed to enhance leadership skills, teamwork, and social responsibility.
As the school day winds down, students return to the Boarding House, for a snack and supervised homework. After dinner, a range of evening activities awaits. Common rooms buzz with activity as boarders relax, catch up on their favourite TV shows, or delve into a good book. The Games Room, stocked with board games, DVDs, and art supplies, is a popular spot for socialising and unwinding. Popular weekly events, such as film nights with popcorn and hot chocolate, are eagerly anticipated and offer opportunities to bond with fellow boarders and create lasting memories.
As night falls, boarders settle into their individual study bedrooms or shared dormitories, where a sense of comfort and security prevails.
The Boarding House is equipped with everything they need for a peaceful night’s sleep, ensuring they wake refreshed and ready for the next day. St. Francis’ College was founded in 1933 by the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary, a congregation of Roman Catholic sisters based in Belgium, whose motto is ‘Cor unum anima una – one heart, one soul’. Since 1983, when the congregation decided to reduce its educational commitment in the United Kingdom, the College was run by an Educational Charity, St. Francis’ College Trust. In 2022 St. Francis’ became part of the Inspired Learning Group, a family of independent schools and nurseries delivering a rich education, combining passion and innovation to develop and inspire children in a nurturing environment for a vibrant future.
