Fish on the menu?

DA reports increase in the number of local residents

It seems somewhat ludicrous that although we live in a 'fishing' village, access to fresh fish either means going out and catching it yourself, having a friend who is happy to share his catch or travelling to PE. Surely there must be a market for small portions fresh yellowtail, geelbek, cob or Steenbras or a dozen oysters or fresh mussels? When Balobi's Seafood Market was still around they did offer fresh fish but one had to buy the whole fish which was crazy although they offered frozen portions mainly brought in from the Western Cape, KZN or Mozambique. Imagine a fresh fish counter at SPAR or at The Butcher Shop where one could buy a couple of cutlets of fresh fish for dinner. There must be a few fishermen who would be prepared to apply for the correct licenses and supply the fish merchant. Oh well I guess we can only dream and in the interim either make friends with a fisherman will to share part of his catch or go fishing one's self. There is the alternative of eating out at one of our local restaurants - Chokka Block now under new management is fast building a great reputation for some creative fish dishes and Christy's have opened a new 'branch' at the port called Indigo Moon.

Nigel Aitken, chairman of the DA in St Francis confirmed the success of recent voter registration for next year's Government and Provincial elections that took place for Ward 12 over the weekend 10 & 11 March. Some 400 local residents turned up at the SFB Community Hall to either check their registration details or to register. Since the last voter registration back in 2016 for the municipal elections, it appears St Francis' population has grown by at least 120 new residents. Some of those who registered in Ward12 for the first time have had holiday houses and have now taken up permanent residence but there were several new people particularly from Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. . Confirming the details Aitken commented “This is good news for our town and confirms what many Estate Agents have been saying about the increase in the number of property sales over the last few years. The more permanent residents the better for it boosts existing businesses who have historically had to rely on the holiday period to make a living. It also helps the Municipality in getting more revenue for Water and Electricity usage. Although declared a successful registration drive the DA needs to take heed for if they can only attract some 400 voters they certainly have their work cut out in the coming months. Certainly many would have checked their details online but still, time for the DA to start planning how they are going to get more voters to the polls in 2019.

New amphibious wheelchairs presented to Kouga Munciplity In an effort to create awareness and to make our beaches universally accessible to persons with disabilities, WESSA has donated amphibious wheelchairs to four coastal municipalities in South Africa, with the support of generous funding made available by The Ford Motor Company Fund. The amphibious wheelchairs were supplied by Blue Flag partner AccessRec and have a unique design that allows them to move easily on the sand, as well as to enter and float in the sea. This initiative has been launched by WESSA – the implementer of the international Blue Flag programme in South Africa – in partnership with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities. The aim is to create awareness and to achieve universal access to Blue Flag beaches, through improved infrastructure and amenities. The City of Cape Town, Overstrand, Bitou and Kouga municipalities were identified as recipients for the chairs, based on their existing disabled access to beaches and on their commitment to making their Blue Flag beaches usable for all people. The sponsored chairs were presented to the selected municipalities at an event held on Muizenberg Beach in Cape Town on Monday, and will be freely available for disabled beachgoers to use at Blue Flag beaches to be determined by the recipient municipalities.

Protest on the R330 outside Humansdorp The protest last month on the R330 before Humansdorp was about the lack of RDP Housing and the relocation of the informal settlement around the waste-water plant. Senior Kouga municipal leaders met with protestors to hear their grievances so as to diffuse the situation explaining that the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements is the responsible authority and not the DA led municipality. Whilst the municipality could not make any promises they do communicate with Department of Human Settlements wherever they could to assist. Mayor Elza van Lingen confirmed that the municipality “had already addressed most of the grievances that were raised in a similar protest at KwaNomzamo last September”. The Mayor confirmed the municipality is doing what it can to uplift the area but housing is unfortunately not within their scope of services they can control. Following last year's protects gravel roads have been graded and 23 water taps installed in informal settlement areas. The bucket system still in place in some parts of KwaNomzamo is marked for removal in next year's budget. The severe drought Kouga is experiencing has seen the municipality having to allocate funds to water disaster management by implementing drought relief measures with boreholes where drilling in Oyster Bay has been successful with drilling continuing in other parts of Kouga.

FLU VACCINATIONS

Winter is coming, bringing with it flu (influenza). During this season, we are all affected by flu. Some of us get sick, and many others have to take care of a loved one who becomes ill. Vaccination against flu can protect you and your family, keeping you away from the doctor, hospital casualty visits, even hospital admissions. Complications of flu can be serious and include pneumonia and worsening of existing heart problems. Flu can be life-threatening. When is the best time to have a flu vaccination? In South Africa, the best time to get your flu vaccine is before the end ofApril, before the flu season sets in, and before the virus spreads or as soon as the vaccine becomes available. However, if you have missed this period, the vaccine can still be taken at any time during the winter season. Where can I have a flu vaccination? You can get your vaccination at your GP or at your pharmacy clinic. I had a flu vaccination last year. Is this year’s vaccine the same as last year’s vaccine? Flu viruses change frequently, and when they change, the previous vaccine is no longer effective. Therefore, the content of the vaccine is changed each year, depending on the year’s particular flu viruses. For full protection, you to receive a dose of vaccine before the flu outbreak begins. Can everybody get a flu vaccination? There are certain circumstances where a person should not have a flu vaccination. This includes people who have had a severe allergic reaction to a flu vaccination in the past and people who have a severe allergy to eggs. Children younger than six months should not have a flu vaccination. Does the flu vaccination prevent flu? Flu vaccination has been proven to be the most effective way of preventing infection and reducing hospital admissions related to flu complications. Flu vaccination continues to offer benefits when given at any time during the flu season but the ideal time for vaccination is before the season starts. It takes the body about two weeks to develop antibodies against the flu virus. Are there any side effects from having the flu vaccination? Side effects are usually not serious and will generally disappear on their own in a day or two.The most common side effects are mild pain, redness and swelling of the skin at the injection site. Other possible side effects include fever, feeling unwell, headaches, muscle and joint pain.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS by Lyn Aitken St Francis College Inter House Gala

The annual St Francis College swimming gala on 13th March took place at the amazing Liquid Lines facility in Cape St Francis. Children of all levels of competency got to participate in the initial Splash In Gala for all Grade 0 to 2 pupils. Although no points are scored for the Splash-In events, each child regardless of age or competence is assured of an opportunity to take part. Then all the children get behind their houses with war cries and chants for the Inter House Gala which followed. The graded swimmers who were all pre-timed to ensure they were competing in completely fair competition swam their hearts out for precious house points. The winning house of the day was once again the Yellowtails House, followed by The Red Romans in second place and Musselcrackers a brave third. Congratulations – there were some great swims on the day and certainly a lot of fun! A very big vote of thanks must go to Maria and her dedicated team at Liquid Lines for facilitating this for us and to all the College staff for their hard work in organising this great event.

St Francis animal rescue's visit

This month the College welcomed St Francis Animal Rescue who are supported by our Thoughtful Thursday outreach. Representing SFAR, Sue Rae Fox and Colin Watt thanked all the pupils for their wonderful donations of dog and cat food to feed the cats and dogs of Sea Vista. Independent schools gala History was made when St Francis College was invited to participate in the Independent Schools Gala for the first time on February 20th. The event was hosted by Woodridge Prep and participating schools included Woodridge, Kingswood Prep, St Andrew's/DSG, St George's Prep and St Francis College. In the 54 races, 34 individual and 20 relay, College swimmers obtained 27 top three places including 8 first, 4 seconds and 15 thirds. The five pupils who obtained first places were, from left, Ethan Darke, Vaclav Horak, Micaella White, Rory Dace and Ryan Marais

10 Tips to Use Less Plastic Stop using plastic straws, even in restaurants. If a straw is a must, purchase a reusable stainless steel or glass straw. Use a reusable produce bag. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag and be sure to wash them often! Give up gum. Gum is made of a synthetic rubber, aka plastic. Buy boxes instead of bottles in your grocery shopping. Reuse containers for storing leftovers or shopping in bulk. Use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, even when ordering from a to-go shop. Bring your own container for take-out or your restaurant doggy-bag since many restaurants use styrofoam. Use matches instead of disposable plastic lighters or invest in a refillable metal lighter. Avoid buying frozen foods - their packaging is mostly plastic. Don't use plastic cutlery at home and be sure to request restaurants to not pack them in your take-out box.

Public Notices have appeared in the press calling for inspection and lodging of objections during the period 15th February to 30 April 2018. The Municipality, the SFPO and the Riparians have combined resources to effect these emergency repairs. The emergency work entails dredging as much sand as possible into the most vulnerable areas of the spit dune. A partial build back of the dune will also begin with the purchase of very large sand bags that will be placed and filled along a line surveyed on the Spit. The sand bags will form a buttress behind which the dune will be built back with both dredging sand from the canals and trucking in sand from approved sources. This needs to be done in the next few months before the winter storms hit the Spit.

HONEY

Weekly or Monthly Contracts available

Local raw honey contains pollen that is specific to your area and therefore can really help those local seasonal allergies. Taking a spoonful of raw honey once or twice a day is a great help. It is also advised to begin taking local honey a few months prior to the allergy season - this gets the pollen introduced into the body and gradually builds up the body’s tolerance to seasonal allergies.
