Humansdorp Secondary support NSRI

Disgusting Mr Mayor, Disgusting!

Sara-Jane Smith, NSRI Station 21 Station Commander received a call from Mrs Rousseau at Humansdorp Secondary School to attend their morning assembly yesterday. Expecting to be given the opportunity to tell the kids of the work done by NSRI Sarah-Jane arrived to an audience to nigh on 2000 kids and teachers ready to tell them all about the wonderful work NSRI does in saving lives, not only on our seas but in almost any emergency situation that presents itself in our region. To her absolute surprise however the purpose of her attendance was not to tell the kids of NSRI work but rather to collect an amount of R7000 in cash collected by the kids of Humansdorp Secondary School for NSRI. The collected money was lain out in piles spelling out NSRI. “I was totally overcome when Mrs Rousseau announced the real reason for our visit to the school as it was not only totally unexpected but so heart-warming that these kids have given so generously to the NSRI cause said an emotional Sara-Jane. Many of the kids at Humansdorp Secondary School come from Sea Vista and no doubt several of the kids will have been hurt by Ollie Holmes having to stop his wonderful work with the Sae Scouts but here is hoping Ollie's efforts can be revived and some of these kids who gave so generously will even end up serving NSRI and saving lives.

SFT went walkabout through the dusty streets and narrow lanes of Sea Vista on Mandela Day with volunteers from St Francis Animal Rescue to feed the many dogs and cats as their contribution to Mandela's legacy. During the walk we witnessed first-hand the filth and decay that has been allowed to fester deep within the township. where piles of garbage have been left to rot creating a huge health hazard in the heart of the township. That the ANC councillor who represents Sea Vista has allowed this cesspool to grow shows he has no concern for those who voted for him. He should be made to pay for the clean-up out of his fat salary for he certainly isn't earning his wage. With great respect to the clean-up initiative a few weeks ago by a caring group of local's residents was rather like 'farting against thunder'. The filth is not something that can be solved by a few ladies with black bags picking up the mess. This requires a lot more. Front end loaders, bulldozers and lots of fill to raise the ground level above the water table. Something has to be done and done now before it presents a serious health risk, not only to the township dwellers but to the adjoining Santareme and farther afield.

Stricter restrictions on the cards for Kouga As water usage at Hankey and Patensie remain dangerously high, Kouga Municipality has renewed its call on residents to drastically cut back on consumption. Meanwhile, the Kouga region as a whole might soon face even stricter water restrictions following the announcement by Nelson Mandela Bay that they will be putting additional measures in place to curb water usage. The combined levels of the supply dams dropped to 18,85% this week. Kouga makes use of the same supply dams as the Metro. “Our most immediate concern, however, is Hankey and Patensie as these towns are wholly reliant on the Kouga Dam for water. The level of the Kouga Dam is a scary 7,2% this week, with no good rain expected in the catchment area in the foreseeable future,” Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks said. According to the latest figures supplied by the Gamtoos Irrigation Board, Patensie used up its entire quota for July during the first two weeks of the month, but there was a decrease in water usage during the third week. “We would like to thank residents for increasing their efforts to save water. Each one of us can make a difference,” the Mayor said.

Beware the Brazilian Pepper Tree Most are keenly aware of alien plants and the negative impact they can have on indigenous flora and fauna. This is not surprising since the St Francis region is one of the worst areas countrywide for dense thicket of alien wattles, principally rooikrans Acacia cyclops. FOSTER has done an excellent job clearing our reserves of all invasive species over the past 20 years but there could be another threat looming which is going to pose an interesting dilemma for reserve management: indigenous species are beginning to invade,. The most conspicuous invaders are coastal silver oak Brachylaena discolour and the Natal wild banana Strelitzia nicolae,. Less common invaders are dune bride's bush Pavetta revoluta and the coral tree Erythrina caffra,. All these are indigenous so okay to adorn the garden. But residents should be on the lookout for a nasty ALIEN, The Brazillian Pepper Tree. It is classified as a CAT1 (b) prohibited invader which means that its presence is illegal unless controlled in a garden. That makes it illegal in any vacant plot. Owners are compelled by law to remove and to prevent regrowth. As a community we need to do all we can to enforce the removal of this invader, including its removal from gardens as its rapid, haphazard growth makes it really unsuitable for ornamental use and the seeds are distributed by birds”

HEALTH

CONSCIOUS

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. About 20% of adults aged 55 or older have experienced some type of mental health concern, but nearly one in three of those seniors do not receive treatment, POTENTIAL TRIGGERS FOR MENTAL ILLNESS • Alcohol or substance abuse • Change of environment, like moving into assisted living • Dementia-causing illness (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease) • Illness or loss of a loved one • Long-term illness (e.g., cancer or heart disease) • Medication interactions • Physical disability • Physical illnesses that can affect emotion, memory and thought • Poor diet or malnutrition SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL ILLNESS Changes in appearance or dress, or problems maintaining the home or yard. • Confusion, disorientation, problems with concentration or decision-making. • Decrease or increase in appetite; changes in weight. • Depressed mood lasting longer than two weeks. • Feelings of worthlessness, inappropriate guilt, helplessness; thoughts of suicide. • Memory loss, especially recent or short-term memory problems. • Physical problems that can’t otherwise be explained: aches, constipation, etc. • Social withdrawal; loss of interest in things that used to be enjoyable. • Trouble handling finances or working with numbers. • Unexplained fatigue, energy loss or sleep changes •

Don’t hesitate to seek help if your loved one is experiencing any of the symptoms above. There are professionals out there who can help, including your family doctor, who is always a good place to start. You could also consult a counselor, geriatric psychiatrist or psychologist. The important part is not to stand by and suffer alone.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS by Lyn Aitken

July 6 - What a perfect day in early July for the Harbour to Harbour Walk! St Francis College’s Grades 1’s and 2’s set off from the Port St Francis Habour and made their way along the beautiful coastal walk, all the while collecting any rubbish they found and stopping to explore rock pools. At the halfway point a welcome board announced free ice lollies and each child received a welcome icy treat courtesy of one of the children’s parents. They kept up a cheerful brisk pace all the way to the collection point at Granny’s Pool where they disposed of all the collected rubbish.

July 16 - Our Under 13A boys hockey team played to a 2-2 draw against Woodridge Preparatory School Under 13B team. It was an evenly balanced affair which was played in an excellent spirit by both teams.

July 18 - SFC pupils contributed to Mandela Day today by bringing blankets to school for people in need, baby/ childhood blankets for schools and older blankets for local animal shelters. Firstly, they heard stories from Mr Bause during assembly about how special Nelson Mandela was especially as regards his compassion for people. They then formed, together with their blankets the figure 100 which commemorates Nelson Mandela's birth 100 years ago. The 100 was photographed from the air- pupils and their blankets. 67 well spent minutes for our hero.

July 21 - Our 1st girls hockey team was invited to attend a hockey festival organized by DSG in Grahamstown. The first two games were against all boys teams of Yellowwoods from Fort Beaufort and Shaw Park from Bathurst on the Rhodes University astro. Our full squad managed a 2-2 draw against Shaw Park. After this, we managed to hold the well drilled DSG Under 13B to a 0-1 defeat on the DSG astro. The girls were superb ambassadors for the school and showed tremendous resilience.

Greetings to all St Francis Bay property owners and residents The SRA Levy will be appearing on the Kouga Municipality's utility bills for those rate payers within the demarcated area with effect from July 2018. Over the next few weeks we will be publishing brief newsletters to answer some of the questions which are being asked. The first of these deals with the questions surrounding the Demarcated Area for the SRA levy. The demarcated area includes the St Francis Bay properties in the canal and village as shown on the map, from the Canal properties on the Kromme River through to the village side of Harbour Road. All rateable erven within this area will be levied at 25% of the property rates amount. This includes various gated estates and sectional title properties as well as commercial zoned properties within the area. The SFPO committee member for Santareme, Dave Harpur, has set up a committee specifically representing the Santareme to Otters Landing property owners' interests, to work in conjunction with the St Francis Property Owners Association. Anyone interested in knowing more about this sub-committee should contact David at david@harpur.co.za or Cell: (0)82 441 4486. To assist those who are financially constrained, we are creating a fund for SRA Levy relief. To apply for relief from this fund property owners will need to complete an application form and submit it with the listed documentation for confidential consideration by an impartial panel. These application forms are available in hard copy from both our office and the St Francis United Church office between 08h30 and 13h00 on weekdays or on our website www.stfrancispropertyowners.co.za Please don't hesitate to contact us at either 042 294 0594 or 082 777 5624 or email contact@sfbresidents.org if you have any queries
