WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 5 JUNE 2018 World Environment Day is the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Above all, World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth. That "something" can be focused locally, nationally or globally; it can be a solo action or involve a crowd. Everyone is free to choose. Each World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern.
The theme for 2018 is
BEATING PLASTIC POLLUTION Plastic pollution is a defining environmental challenge for our time. In the next 10-15 years global plastic production is projected to nearly double. Avoiding the worst of these outcomes demands a complete rethinking of the way we produce, use and manage plastic. You, as an individual can exercise your power as a consumer. You can do this by turning down plastic straws and cutlery, cleaning beaches and coastlines, and reconsidering your purchase habits in supermarket aisles. If this happens enough, retailers will quickly get the message to ask their suppliers to do better. Plastic

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEES Ever wondered where all the food that you eat comes from? Well it might surprise you that a signicant proportion is provided by bees one way or another. If you look at the plate of food on your dinner table, bees have played their part either pollinating the many vegetables and fruits we eat directly, or pollinating the food for the animals that we then consume. And that’s not all bees do for us - honey and wax are two other important products that come courtesy of bees. Pollination is the vital process in owering plant reproduction involving the transfer of pollen grains from the anther to the stigma of the same, or another plant of the same species. The fertilised egg cells grow into seeds which are then spread in the many fruits and vegetables that we all love to eat. This transfer of pollen can be done by the wind, birds, bats, mammals and of course insects; one of the most important of these are the honey bees that pollinate on a huge commercial scale. All sorts of fruit and vegetables are pollinated by honey bees, such as broccoli and squash, apples and almonds. Bees are disappearing globally at an alarming rate due to pesticides, parasites, disease and habitat loss. If these little insects that help provide so much of the food we eat were to vanish, what would we do without them?
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP 1. Do not use any pesticides, fungicides or herbicides on plants or in your garden. Plants get contaminated and the product will likely reach the bees and kill them. 2. Buy local & raw honey from your local beekeepers. Avoid honey sold in bulk or in the supermarket unless you are sure of its provenance and quality. . 3. Plant your garden with native and bee friendly plants. They provide great sources of nectar and pollen. It’s important for bees, as it is for us, to have a diverse and regular food supply. 4. Educate yourself and your children about bees. Bees are not dangerous; they forage on a ower and don’t attack humans. By better understanding them we will learn to better respect them.

SF looks forward to bumper weekends
Ship’s Master thanks NSRI
Over the past month St Francis has been blessed with two major sport events that not only introduce a whole new group of visitor to our wonderful area but certainly assist both the hospitality related businesses as well as economy in general as we head into the quiet winter months. Recently St Francis Links hosted the men's National Senior and Super-Senior Division "A" Inter-Provincial Championships followed by the Links and St Francis Bay Golf Club jointly hosting the Senior Women's Nationals, both events being a huge success with players singing the praises of both golf courses and the St Francis experience. Amidst all the fairway and green activity St Francis also hosted the annual Kromme Descent, a swimming event that, but for its 100 entry limit, would probably attract a lot more competitors and of course, their families. Two more bumper weekends are now looming with the Eastern Cape Canoe Marathon (2nd & 3rd June) followed by the 2018 SA Canoe Marathon over the weekend 16 and 17 June. That we are able to attract such major events certainly is important to our economy and thus we, as a community, must do all we can to welcome our visitors and ensure them a great time in St Francis.
Following the amazing effort by NSRI the skipper of the SA Amandla, the ship that was able to tow the stricken tugboat and ship to safety wrote the following to the NSRI crews involved. “I would like to forward my deepest and sincere appreciation and thanks to the NSRI teams – Rescue 21 St Francis and Rescue 37 Jeffrey's Bay and their base support teams that came out to give support and medical standby during the time of the bridle wire recovery and tow connection. We had on this occasion had to work as close as <5 meters from the bulbous bow of the MT ORDER to recover the very short bridle pennant on deck. It was comforting and morale up lifting to all onboard to have the rescue teams in close standby should any immediate evacuation of crew had been required. I take my hat off to those guys who offer their time and life for the preservation of life to all connected with the seas. Well done to all… Give them all a Bells from us Kind regards The Master , Officers and crew Russel Duse And from Dave Murray | BU Manager : Offshore Marine Services to Ian Gray, Station Commander NSRI Port Elizabeth “I would like to echo his comments. Many thanks, you and your team managed to alleviate what could have been a very serious maritime incident”.residents about life in the village and its history,
Dining at Dune Ridge
Have a Heart
An invitation to visit Dune Ridge is not something one turns down for, not only is it one of the most beautiful havens in St Francis, but it also means good food, be it a platter of sandwiches, a selection of cakes or indeed a meal. Each Monday SarahJane is offering a menu with a choice of two starters, two entrees and two desserts. Last Monday I chose to forego the starter of Pumpkin & Cumin soup or creamy peri-peri chicken livers on sourdough bread and rather go straight to the Lamb Shank entrée. And what a good decision for I was well rewarded with a generous lamb shank served on a bed of creamy mashed potato - 'falloff-the-bone' delicious. The 'piece de la resistance'! As good as the lamb was the Malva pudding was the highlight of the meal and I would return just to have another. And judging by how the other guests who chose the Malva almost licked their plates they were in total agreement. Dune Ridge is offering these Monday dinners at just R95 although the starter is at additional cost should you choose one. Sarah has also introduced a 'Burger & Crazy Shakes' night on Wednesday and if their burgers are anywhere as good as that Lamb Shank it is an evening not to be missed.
To coincide with the launch of their Have a Heart campaign, St Francis Animal Rescue (SFAR), h a v e a l s o l a u n c h e d t h e i r www.stfrancisanimalrescue.org to keep generous supporters abreast with progress in caring for the pets of Sea Vista. The 'Have A Heart' campaign hopes to encourage animal lovers in St Francis and further afield to support SFAR's efforts to sterilize, feed and medicate needy cats and dogs in the Sea Vista township. SFAR has asked for a monthly pledge of between R50 – R500 from St Francis Bay residents, and those further afield, who care about animals, and share its mission of eliminating the neglect and cruelty that stems from the breeding of unwanted puppies and kittens. “What started as a small group of volunteers who met in Sea Vista to help residents by booking their cats and dogs for sterilization, has expanded to include 10 to 12 volunteers at a time, working side by side.” Also commented that this year has seen an explosion of puppies and kittens in Sea Vista making the need to sterilise more dogs all the more important.

Blepharitis - inflammation of the eyelids
Blepharitis usually involves the part of the eyelid where the eyelashes grow and affects both eyelids. Blepharitis commonly occurs when tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes become clogged. This leads to irritated and red eyes. It can be uncomfortable and unsightly but it usually doesn't cause permanent damage to eyesight, and it's not contagious. Blepharitis symptoms and signs include: Watery eyes Red eyes A gritty, burning or stinging sensation in the eyes Eyelids that appear greasy Itchy eyelids Red, swollen eyelids Flaking of the skin around the eyes Crusted eyelashes upon awakening Eyelid sticking More frequent blinking Sensitivity to light Eyelashes that grow abnormally Loss of eyelashes When to see a doctor If you have blepharitis symptoms and signs that don't seem to be improving despite good hygiene — regular cleaning and care of the affected area, make an appointment with your GP. Causes of Blepharitis The exact cause of blepharitis isn't clear. It may be associated with factors including: Seborrheic dermatitis — dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows A bacterial infection Clogged or malfunctioning oil glands in your eyelids Rosacea — a skin condition characterized by facial redness Allergies, including allergic reactions to eye medications, contact lens solutions or eye makeup Eyelash mites or lice

UPCYCLE YOUR FURNITURE The environmental benefits of upcycling are huge - aside from minimising the volume of discarded materials and waste being sent to landfill each year, it also reduces the need for production using new or raw materials which means a reduction in air pollution, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and often a conservation of global resources. Cross the Line Interiors are huge fans of the upcycling phenomenon and we want to encourage everyone else to jump on board.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS by Lyn Aitken
ST FRANCIS COLLEGE VS HERMITAGE HOUSE ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING The annual two day tradition of sports and comradeship between these two schools took place on Friday and Saturday 11 and 12th of May this year with the school teams challenging each other to hockey, netball, chess and rugby. Eight mini hockey games were played with the SFC winning three and Hermitage House five. On the netball court, SFC won four out of six matches and the U13A put up a gallant effort losing 3-9. On the rugby fields, the Under 13 seven a side game was won by Hermitage House by 20-5 and the same score was reflected in the Under 11 match. The chess hall was a popular gathering point for those waiting for their turn on the fields. After the formalities of the top ten match, won narrowly 10 and a half to nine and a half by Hermitage House, pupils from both schools played their own matches and made new friends. On the Saturday morning, the senior hockey (boys and girls combined teams) on Saturday, the Hermitage House under 13 B team won 1-0 in their first game and drew the second 1-1. However, the two SFC U13 teams beat Hermitage House U13A team 4-0 and 2-1 respectively. “Both schools did our tradition proud this year and are to be congratulated,” said Headmaster Franzl Bause. “Such is the tradition that long after the scores have been forgotten, lifelong comradeship will have been forged between the pupils of both schools.” Under 11 netball team: Madison Morris, Layla de Bruyn, Ruby Tovell and Eva Hurley. Front- Sarah Gerry, Milla Aylesbury, Elisabeth Sitshetshe and Layla Reynolds. Under 13 rugby team: Lisenathi Mannie, Brennan Landman, Sine Ndabambi, Oliver Mirfin and Sipho Mofu. Front - Sibulele Poti, James Beckley and Keano Dukai.

And since most plastics don’t biodegrade in any meaningful sense, all that plastic waste could exist for hundreds or even thousands of years. 6. ONE MILLION plastic bottles are bought every minute. 7. 90% of bottled water is found to contain plastic particles. 8. Nearly TWO MILLION single-use plastic bags are distributed worldwide every minute. 9. 500 MILLION plastic straws are used EVERY DAY in America alone. That’s enough to circle the Earth twice. 10. There is more microplastic in the ocean than there are stars in the Milky Way. 11. If plastic production isn’t curbed, plastic pollution will outweigh fish pound for pound by 2050. 12. 17 MILLION barrels of oil are used on plastic production each year. 13. 8 MILLION METRIC TONS of plastic winds up in our oceans each year. That’s enough trash to cover every foot of coastline around the world with five full trash bags of plastic…compounding every year. 14. An estimated 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastics each year 15. 10% of all human-generated waste is plastic.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 5 JUNE 2018 Become a responsible consumer and recycle your plastic - not just today, but everyday. WAYS IN WHICH YOU can relieve the 8.8 million metric tons of plastic waster that is believed to be dumped in the oceans each year, causing widespread harm to the marine environment. 1) Collect plastic for Owl Houses, Bat Houses and Bee Hives (hard crushable plastic - plastic bottles, caps and plastic containers)
2) Make an Eco-brick (non-recyclable plastic - thin plastic, plastic bags)
HOW TO MAKE AN ECO BRICK STEP 1 Collect clean and dry plastic waste at home
STEP 2 Compress waste into 2l plastic bottle with a stick
STEP 3 Pack tightly throughout the process to ensure that it’s unsquishable
STEP 4 Squish with one hand to measure if it’s full enough
STEP 5 Celebrate - YOUR eco brick is ready to be built with!

UPDATE ON WHO'S WHO IN ST FRANCIS PROPERTY OWNERS The St Francis Property Owners Committee is an elected committee, chaired by Wayne Furphy with Chris Gray as vice chairman which represents the interests of residents and property owners of St Francis Bay. The committee has recently included a sub-committee representative for the Santareme to Otters Landing sector. This sub-committee is being formed to focus on matters of concern to this community, particularly now that Santareme is not included in the SRA Levy demarcated area. David Harpur represents this sector on the SFPO and has already begun working to form his sub-committee and to set objectives. Also new to the committee on an active basis is Dave Truter. Dave represented the Port Elizabeth property owners before moving to St Francis Bay permanently. He will now lend his expertise to the CCTV project. Former Chairman of the St Francis Bay Residents Association and long serving member, Nigel Aitken is responsible for security, community and Municipal matters. Also serving are Norman Dyer representing the Kromme Joint River Committee and The Links as well as Simon Picton-Turbervill representing the St Francis Bay Riparian Homeowners Association. Louis van der Merwe who represented Johannesburg based property owners has now stood down from the committee. Both the SFPO Association and the SFPO NPC (Not for Profit Company) meet each month and all members and Directors serve on a voluntary basis, and with the exception of accountant Paul Pezarro, receive no remuneration for their contribution. The cost of maintaining our office is met through the voluntary payment of an annual subscription from residents, presently R500 p.a. with pensioners being entitled to a reduced rate of R330 p.a. We appeal to everyone to help us to protect the interests of St Francis Bay by supporting us. Water is a precious resource and since we are in the midst of a serious drought we all have to learn how to use it carefully. Every action each of us takes to save water in our home makes a difference! This page is proudly sponsored by St Francis Info Ads
Choose a Water-Wise Garden 1 George Road, St Francis Bay
042 294 0574 073 1966 129 Water wise gardens focus on plants that thrive with little water and have certain characteristics that make them water efficient. By knowing these characteristics you’ll be able to decide what you should and shouldn’t plant. Look for: Small or needle-like leaves. This minimises the surface area for water to evaporate. Examples are ericas, acacias, rosemary, origanum and thyme. Few leaves. Some plants reduce water loss by dispensing with leaves altogether, or shedding during drought. Examples are the karee tree, acacias and buffalo thorn. Grey foliage reflects the sun’s rays, keeping the plant cooler which in turn reduces water loss. Examples are lavender, artemesia, arctotis and giant honey flower. Hairs slow down air movement which reduces water loss. Examples are the silver tree, lamb’s ear, beach salvia and helichrysum. Succulents store water in thick fleshy leaves. Think of crassulas, aloes, echevarias and vygies. Waxy leaves prevent moisture loss. Examples are euonymus, kalanchoe and Indian hawthorn.
