INTERNATIONAL DAY OF HAPPINESS 20 MARCH 2018

The International Day of Happiness was introduced by the General Assembly of the United Nations during 2012 and was celebrated for the first time in 2013. Through seminars and educational tips and tools, the aim is to educate and increase public awareness of the benefits of happiness. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the organisation's patron. The original idea came from the Kingdom of Bhutan in the Himalayan region of Asia. There, the population is thought by many to be among the happiest in the world due to the holistic approach to life and the amount of importance which is placed on the well being of people and communities, as much as material wealth. For everyone, the day is a useful reminder that in general happiness does not necessarily come from buying and consuming, or from being famous or glamorous – but often from friends, family and emotional well being The 2015 Day of Happiness campaign focused on relationships. We are a social species and we thrive when we’re closely connected to others. But modern society is leaving more and more people feeling disconnected, isolated or lonely. On the day, thousands of people all around the world reached out to make new, positive connections with others. “This International Day of Happiness is more than just a fun celebration, it also remind us all that the world is a better place when we connect with and care about the people around us” International Day of Happiness can be celebrated by pursuing the goals that make you happy. It doesn’t matter if your passion is writing, painting, playing with your dog or spending time with your friends and family. This day is the perfect day to do whatever will make you happy. It is also a day that can be celebrated by ensuring the happiness of others. This can be done by saying a kind word to someone, giving them a gift or even just a smile. Make sure you do something great and find your happy!

WATER SAVING FOR TIPS HOME Reduce your shower time to 2 minutes. Save the water and use it in your garden

Install a water saving ush device system in your toilet. Only ush when you really need to.

Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth. Turn off the tap between rinsing.

Close taps properly and x leaking pipes and taps. Don’t rinse dishes under running water

Save water from your shower and sink to wash your car. Use a bucket instead of a hosepipe.

Use the shortest wash cycle on your washing machine and make sure you wash a full load.

Water is a precious resource and since we are in the midst of a serious drought we all have to learn how to use it carefully. Every action each of us takes to save water in our home makes a difference! This page is proudly sponsored by St Francis Info Ads

Chaos at licensing department

Most will recall how the contestants in the Africa Adventure enthralled all of St Francis and indeed most of the Kouga region over the five days of the race hosted by Cape St Francis Resort and organised by Kinetic Events. Well the Heidi and Stephan are bringing a scaled down version of the race back to Cape St Francis and the greater Kouga area again this coming August. The race will be reduced from the 500 kilometres of last year to 120 kilometres and competitors will be given just 48 hours to complete the course with the leaders expected to finish in under24 hours. Crazy! The disciplines will include mountain biking, trekking, kayaking and orienteering and teams will need to be able to navigate using a map and landmarks although they will be allowed to use their live tracking that will be available to assist them in their navigation. So if you enjoy pushing your body to its limits, wandering in harsh environments in the dark, going without sleep for 24 or more hours, then this race is for you start training, very hard!. Te a m s o f f o u r w i t h n o m i x e d g e n d e r requirements as was the case last year are being invited to participate so if you are in for a little adventure get your entry in now The race organisers will be asking for volunteers and no doubt sponsors, to join in what promises to be as enthralling as last year's event.

Go back to the old system unless they can teach staff on how it works! Whoever decided on the new appointment system for drivers licenses made on major error of judgement, he or she forgot to teach the people who work with it on how it works. The concept really is quite simple but seemingly not so for the existing staff.

http://www.kineticgear.co.za/Events/Full-Moon-Kouga

The system was changed supposedly to save people from waiting in long queues but just the opposite has happened. There is no order and it would appear that your appointment time is nothing more than a ruse to enable testing staff to delay the process in the hope you will give up and go home. Enquiring why your ten o'clock is running three hours late is met with a rude dismissal to go and wait in the waiting room. That would be great except a queue with no regard to appointment times has formed inside the testing room and they are going nowhere Best though is observing the efficiency in the testing office. Firstly there is no order and staff are all busy having their own conversations with each other as the iop of their voice, One old guy charged with stapling applications to photograph took all of 10 minutes to refill his stapler. A John Cleese comedy could not have portrayed this simple act better.

Residents to register their boreholes

Cape St Francis extends CCTV installation

Kouga Municipality is updating its information about boreholes situated on private land and Executive Mayor Elza van Lingen is appealing to all property owners with boreholes on their land to register them with the municipality. With the region struggling through a severe drought this information is necessary for planning to ensure all communities have water. The Mayor confirmed that property owners are legally required to register their boreholes with the municipality as set out in Clause 141 of the National Water Act (Act No.36 of 1998) and Clause 48 of Kouga Municipality's Water Supply and Sanitation Services Bylaw. According to the bylaw, all property owners with boreholes are required to provide the following information to the municipality on the prescribed form: Full name and surname, Municipal account number and Physical address, Coordinates of the borehole, Yield, Depth, casing depth and material and depth of water level and Name of borehole driller and drilling log. It is also a requirement that property owners install water meters and keep records of water usage on a monthly basis. Van Lingen said that those property owners who had not yet done so would be given grace till 30 June 2018 to register their boreholes. For more information call Dane Von Berg of the Department of Water and Sanitation. He can be contacted on 041 501 0739 or via email at vonbergd@dws.gov.za.

After a spat of break-ins in Cape St Francis in the latter period of last year the Civics committee decided on a CCTV network to curb the burgeoning crime wave. Shortly before Christmas Cividcs installed their first CCTV cameras at the entrance to Cape St Francis with one of the cameras having number plate recognition connected to the SAPS database. Almost instantly the crime rate dropped and remains relatively low. Since the installation and thanks to generous donations by some of the local residents they have now managed to extend the CCTV network with phases two and three in progress. More donations are needed to complete the installation and those who haven't yet made a donation are encouraged to make a donation, no matter how much for every Rand counts toward making Cape St Francis safe. At a recent civics meeting with w/o Van Heerden reported that CSF had a quiet period over December and reported favourably on the cameras Civics had installed as well as recent arrests of suspects by the police with assistance from local residents that has resulted in a decline in criminal activity experienced late last year. WORLD KIDNEY DAY - 14 MARCH 2018

Kidney diseases are silent killers, which will largely affect your quality of life. There are however several easy ways to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease. Keep fit and active Keeping fit helps to reduce your blood pressure and therefore reduces the risk of Chronic Kidney Disease. Keep regular control of your blood sugar level About half of people who have diabetes develop kidney damage, so it is important for people with diabetes to have regular tests to check their kidney functions. Kidney damage from diabetes can be reduced or prevented if detected early. Monitor your blood pressure Although many people may be aware that high blood pressure can lead to a stroke or heart attack, few know that it is also the most common cause of kidney damage. High blood pressure is especially likely to cause kidney damage when associated with other factors like diabetes, high cholesterol and CardioVascular Diseases. Eat healthy and keep your weight in check This can help prevent diabetes, heart disease and other conditions associated with Chronic Kidney Disease.Reduce your salt intake. The recommended sodium intake is 5-6 grams of salt per day (around a teaspoon). Maintain a healthy fluid intake It is recommended that we drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water per day. Consuming plenty of fluid helps the kidneys clear sodium, urea and toxins from the body which, in turn, results in a “significantly lower risk” of developing chronic kidney disease Do not smoke Smoking slows the flow of blood to the kidneys. When less blood reaches the kidneys, it impairs their ability to function properly. Smoking also increases the risk of kidney cancer by about 50 percent. Do not take over-the-counter pills on a regular basis Common drugs such non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen are known to cause kidney damage and disease if taken regularly. Get your kidney function checked if you have one or more of the ‘high risk’ factors Diabetes Hypertension Obesity One of your parents or other family members suffers from kidney disease

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS by Lyn Aitken

The final trials for the NMBS Grom Team took place on Saturday 10th February. St Francis College was well represented by surfers Hannah Praetorius (Grade 7) and Rory Dace (Grade 4). The two did our school proud with Hannah winning the U/14 Girls event and Rory taking a win for the U/10 Boys. Well done to both Hannah and Rory who were selected to compete in the SA Grommet Games in Port Elizabeth 21-25 March!

Our Thoughtful Thursday outreach programme has resumed for 2018 and we decided to support St Francis Animal Rescue again this term. Our Grade 00 and Nursery school have donated a wonderful collection of dry dog and cat food. We appreciate everything this organisation do for the animals in Sea Vista!

Congratulations were in order for our St Francis College Under 13A Waterpolo team who won their inaugural match against Collegiate Girls High School Under 13B team 4-1. This was followed by another wonderful achievement for our team who managed an amazing result of 8-6 against Pearson High School U/14B team on their second ever match. And, this came after a gruelling Independent Schools gala where our school also did so well against much bigger schools! A special word of thanks to Hayden of Liquid Lines, our Water Polo Team coach and to Shakti Shanti for sponsoring our super swimming costumes!

By all accounts the Grade 6's music class was a noisy but fun affair when they started learning to play the recorder this month!

10 Tips to Use Less Plastic Stop using plastic straws, even in restaurants. If a straw is a must, purchase a reusable stainless steel or glass straw. Use a reusable produce bag. Purchase or make your own reusable produce bag and be sure to wash them often! Give up gum. Gum is made of a synthetic rubber, aka plastic. Buy boxes instead of bottles in your grocery shopping. Reuse containers for storing leftovers or shopping in bulk. Use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, even when ordering from a to-go shop. Bring your own container for take-out or your restaurant doggy-bag since many restaurants use styrofoam. Use matches instead of disposable plastic lighters or invest in a refillable metal lighter. Avoid buying frozen foods - their packaging is mostly plastic. Don't use plastic cutlery at home and be sure to request restaurants to not pack them in your take-out box.

TAKE THE PLEDGE say no to single use plastic

The proliferation of plastic products in the last 70 years or so has been extraordinary; quite simply we cannot now live without them. We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use. More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. Plastic is cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications. However, these qualities have also resulted in it becoming an environmental issue. We have developed a “disposable” lifestyle and estimates are that around 50% of plastic is used just once and thrown away. Unless mass behaviour change happens, the plastic crisis is only going to get worse. Do your part and join the movement to eliminate single use plastics by following these simple steps:

TAKE YOUR OWN SHOPPING BAG STORE LEFTOVERS IN GLASS JARS BUY BAMBOO & COTTON EARBUDS

February 2018 Newsletter Greetings to all St Francis Bay property owners and residents 1.

SRA

We have reached our first major milestone in establishing an SRA for St Francis Bay's Canal and Village properties. The majority of property owners in the demarcated area have consented to the introduction of a new SRA levy, which will be 25% of the rates we pay. We are continuing to gather votes, so you can vote online on our website, or print the voting form which is also available on our website, complete it and either scan/photograph it and send it back to us via email or WhatsApp or SMS. We have submitted our application for a SRA to the Kouga Municipality. They will audit the votes, and initiate a 35 day period in which property owners from the demarcated area may submit objections to the proposed SRA levy. A very big thank you goes to everyone for supporting us and especially to all those volunteers who helped in the vote gathering process. 2.

SUB-COMMITTEE FOR SANTAREME TO ST FRANCIS-ON-SEA

We reduced the demarcated area to the Village and the Canals for this SRA application. We have not excluded the Santareme through to Otters Landing properties from future participation in the SRA. We do recognise that they have different priorities to the Village and Canals. Dave Harpur has set up a committee specifically representing the Santareme to Otters Landing property owners' interests, and as Chairman of this committee wil join the SFPO Association Committee. Anyone interested in knowing more about this sub-committee should contact David at david@harpur.co.za or Cell: (0)82 441 4486. 3.

Water Restrictions

The water situation continues to worsen with the lack of sufficient rains to relieve the crisis. We appeal to all our residents and visitors to use water sparingly as our dam levels continue to drop. 4.

Objections to Municipal Valuations

Some St Francis property owners have expressed their concerns regarding the municipal valuation of their and other properties, and the lack of fairness in the valuations. There is now an opportunity to scrutinize the General Valuation Roll of the Kouga Municipality for the period 1st July 2018 to 30th June 2023. Public Notices have appeared in the press calling for inspection and lodging of objections during the period 15th February to 30 April 2018. The roll can be viewed at our Municipal offices as well as the Kouga Municipality website (www.kouga.gov.za). We encourage all property owners to check their valuations before the stipulated closing date as no late objections will be accepted.

The Blue Moon Spring tides hit the Spit and Beach hard in January. We (SFPO and Riparians) have been given permission to undertake emergency repairs on the Spit. The Riparians are dredging sand from the canals onto the most vulnerable areas of the Spit. The SFPO NPC Technical Committee has submitted an Emergency Plan to the Municipality and DEDEAT via Frank Silberbauer, the ECO (Environmental Control Officer). The Municipality, Riparians and SFPO NPC will combine their resources to fund this work. We have ordered large sand bags (7 metres in length) to place a buttress against which we can build back the dune on the Spit to strengthen its defences for the winter storms. The long term solution (we have called Phase 2) for the River, Spit and Beach continues in parallel to the Emergency work and Phase 1 (repair of the existing revetments along the Beach and Spit). This work consists of three sub-projects : a) Design of the Beach and Spit Solution : Advisian will complete the design of the long term solution for the Beach and Spit by the end of February. Once this has been finalised we will make their report available to everyone on our website in March. b) Source of Sand : Greg Miller is conducting a survey of several sources of sand for nourishing the beach and spit. c) EIA : Colleen Ebersohn has started the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment). This is a lengthy process that could take up to 16 months to complete. Completion being DEDEAT's authorisation of the proposed solution and sources of sand.
