While appreciation for any parent should be every day of the year undoubtedly, moms deserve to be celebrated because they’re always putting others ahead of themselves. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to stop and reflect on all of her hard work. Happy Mother's Day to my very own amazing mom - because of you, I am me! “My mother... she is beautiful, softened at the edges and tempered with a spine of steel. I want to grow old and be like her."

HONEY

Local raw honey contains pollen that is specific to your area and therefore can really help those local seasonal allergies. Taking a spoonful of raw honey once or twice a day is a great help. It is also advised to begin taking local honey a few months prior to the allergy season - this gets the pollen introduced into the body and gradually builds up the body’s tolerance to seasonal allergies.

A Taste of St Francis

Vee (pictured right) was serving lunch to a table of four on at poolside when she noticed the toddler in the group was continually walking very close to water's edge. Anticipating the danger Vee approached the group and suggested they should seat the child on a chair she had brought them suggesting it would stop him wandering around the pool. Appreciating the danger and anticipating a potential disaster Vee kept an eye on the toddler as she went about serving diners. Turning from attending a table she saw the toddler and was now walking right on the pool edge of the opposite side of the pool to where his parents sat. Almost on cue because of his unsteady gait the inevitable happened. The toddler fell into the pool. In an instant and without hesitation jumped into the pool and grabbed at the now submerged child. Seeing the and realising her colleague needed help, Annelisa too, jumped into the water and managed to get the child by the hair and lift him out the water. By this time other diners had seen what was happening and one diner came to the two heroine's aid and lifted the child out of the water. No worse for wear thanks to the quick reactions of Vee and Annelisa the child was reunited with very embarrassed but thankful parents. Well done ladies!

Two popular local recipe books “A Taste of St Francis” and “A Second Taste of St Francis” published some years ago is being reproduced into a single book by local publishing company, Write On. Wrtie-On's Frank Nunan who was also responsible for publishing local author Bartle Logie's recently launched 'Toasted Marshmallows and Obies' commented “At the request of the original compiler of the books, Yvonne Bosman whose brainchild this project is, part of the proceeds of the sale of the books will be donated to the Kromme Enviro-Trust, which fully endorses the project. The two booklets are being combined into one volume: “A Taste of St Francis”, and in contrast to the quaint typed and photocopied originals, the b o o k w i l l b e a h i g h - q u a l i t y, m o d e r n , professionally typeset and bound book. The book contains dozens of recipes, ranging from the sublime to the simple, all submitted by St Francis Bay residents of the day – all their names will appear in the book. It also contains anecdotes and reminiscences by St Francis Bay residents about life in the village and its history, The book may be pre-ordered from the Write-On's w e b s i t e : ://writeonpublishing .co.za/index.php/the -store at a special pre-production price of R120.

The Tarragona minefield One only needs to spend a half hour or so at the side of Tarragona road opposite the township housing to witness its potential as a death trap every bit as lethal as a minefield. In the past week at least two dogs have been killed and it is only a matter of time before a child becomes a victim. A general lawlessness seems to have prevailed in St Francis and even Cape St Francis of late. It seems now that our visitors have returned to their provinces, cities and towns of residence; St Franciscans can now live by their own laws and ignore speed limits and other traffic laws. Travel along St Francis Drive at the speed limit of 50 KPH and it's almost a certainty that you will be passed by a vehicle, and not just a car or bakkie, but even a three-ton truck, or truck/car with a trailer. Cars, bakkies, trucks and even huge 10-tonners ignore the speed limit, yield and stop signs along Tarragona but unlike many of the towns streets, Tarragona has an added hazard as the road is the playground to scores of township children – many of them small children. Speed calming devices should be placed every 100 metres or between the industrial area and the housing and should be done with some urgency and before we have a catastrophe. #ALL LIVES MATTER

Our local Flora The beautiful Brunsvigia gregaria is presently blooming on lawns and verges throughout St Francis and indeed Kouga. Sadly they have become highly threatened because of urban development, alien invasion and ignorance and are in danger of dying out if people, new to the area, are not informed. Digging these threatened species out with a trowel will damage the plant and rather they can be propagated by planting the seeds. Leave the flower to dry naturally so that the seed can set and then be dispersed by wind or replanted. Gardeners are advised to mow around the flower to let it dry naturally. In winter, when the plant is building up growth for the next flowering period, the leaves come out as two flat leaves (close to the ground) looking just like weeds to those not familiar with the plant. “It is actually an offence to dig up Brunsvigia, or any lilliacae plants,” says Caryl Logie, a local botanist. “If they need to be rescued for any reason, a permit must be obtained from the Department of Environmental affairs in Aston Bay (telephone 042 292 0339).” If you rescue these flower heads to make into indoor decorations, please ensure that any seeds that are left in them are planted in a safe spot. Questions regarding these plants may be directed to Caryl Logie on 042 294 0588 or 083 529 5410

HEALTH

CONSCIOUS

BETTER EAR HEALTH

Many medical condition can affect your hearing health. If left undiagnosed and untreated, some conditions can lead to irreversible hearing impairment or deafness. TINNITUS - Tinnitus is the medical name indicating ringing in the ears, which includes noises ranging from loud roaring to clicking, humming, or buzzing. Most tinnitus comes from damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Hearing nerve impairment and tinnitus can also be a natural accompaniment of advancing age. Exposure to loud noise is probably the leading cause of tinnitus damage to hearing in younger people. Medical treatments and assistive hearing devices are often helpful to those with this condition. SWIMMER’S EAR - An infection of the outer ear structures caused when water gets trapped in the ear canal leading to a collection of trapped bacteria is known as swimmer?s ear or otitis externa. In this warm, moist environment, bacteria multiply causing irritation and infection of the ear canal. Although it typically occurs in swimmers, bathing or showering can also contribute to this common infection. In severe cases, the ear canal may swell shut leading to temporary hearing loss and making administration of medications difficult. EARWAX - Earwax (also known as cerumen) is produced by special glands in the outer part of the ear canal and is designed to trap dust and dirt particles keeping them from reaching the eardrum. Usually the wax accumulates, dries, and then falls out of the ear on its own or is wiped away. One of the most common and easily treatable causes of hearing loss is accumulated earwax. Using cotton swabs or other small objects to remove earwax is not recommended as it pushes the earwax deeper into the ear, increasing buildup and affecting hearing. Excessive earwax can be a chronic condition best treated by a physician. AUTOIMMUNE INNER EAR DISEASE - Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is an inflammatory condition of the inner ear. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks cells in the inner ear that are mistaken for a virus or bacteria. Prompt medical diagnosis is essential to ensure the most favorable prognosis. Therefore, recognizing the symptoms of AIED is important: sudden hearing loss in one ear progressing rapidly to the second and continued loss of hearing over weeks or months, a feeling of ear fullness, vertigo, and tinnitus. Treatments primarily include medications but hearing aids and cochlear implants are helpful to some. PERFORATED EARDRUM - A perforated eardrum is a hole or rupture in the eardrum, a thin membrane that separates the ear canal and the middle ear. A perforated eardrum is often accompanied by decreased hearing and occasional discharge with possible pain. Sometimes a perforated eardrum will heal spontaneously, other times surgery to repair the hole is necessary. Serious problems can occur if water or bacteria enter the middle ear through the hole. A physician can advise you on protection of the ear from water and bacteria until the hole is repaired.

Greetings to all St Francis Bay property owners and residents St Francis Property Owners is a volunteer organisation committed to promoting and enhancing the living environment of our town and to ensure that the area is well represented when dealing with the Kouga Local Municipality and other statutory bodies, especially in dealing with service delivery. The value of your property and the quality of your time in St Francis are very dependent on the quality and cost of service from your local municipality. Our committee of ten members representing all sectors of the St Francis Bay community meets each month to continually watch over residents' interests and our Administration Manager, Lyn Aitken is available from 08h30 to 13h00 weekdays to provide advice and assistance to both local residents and distant property owners. To keep our residents abreast of our work, we publish a monthly newsletter, maintain an active website and can be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SFPOSavingStFrancis/. If you wish to receive a copy of the newsletter simply call us or email your request to our office – contact details above. The cost of providing this service and maintaining our office is met through the voluntary payment of an annual subscription from residents, presently R500 p.a. with pensioners being entitled to a reduced rate of R330 p.a. This subscription payment is voluntary and we appeal to everyone to help us to protect the interests of St Francis Bay by supporting us. Our subscription year runs concurrently with our financial year from 1st October to the 30th September. Our Banking Details are : St Francis Bay Residents Association Standard Bank Humansdorp Bank Code: 050015 Account No.: 08 249 9276 Reference : Erf No and Name Please don't hesitate to contact us at either 042 294 0594, 082 777 5624, or email contact@sfbresidents.org if you have any queries or wish to submit your handwritten voting form.

Having confidence with colour Colour is an international visual language understood by all so when you are trying to communicate something through interior design, there is no better way to do it than through colour. In order to do that, you need to understand your own colour personality, establish your design style and learn how colours behave, how they change their character and how they influence our mood. Visit our Facebook page to explore various Design Styles and learn more about your colour personality.

This term we have expanded our Talhado Montessori Preschool to 83 pupils and our teaching staff compliment to 5 teachers. This means we took in additional 20 pupils for this new term . The furniture shown in the photo for the new classroom was made possible through funding received from The Rotary Club of Woking in the UK. The Montessori materials for the new class were donated by Carey Olsen , our sincere thanks to these two generous donors. The children have settled in well and receive excellent attention from their teachers as the ratio of teacher to pupils is approximately 17.
