TH
PRINT EDITION and to mark this milestone, we’re going digital!
Welcome to the 100th Edition of St Francis Info Ads! The first edition of Info Ads was printed in April 2010 when my family owned and ran the local print shop. We decided to start the small community brochure to offer local businesses, including ourselves, affordable monthly advertising. It started off with 16 pages and month by month, our client list, along with the number of pages, grew and grew. I eventually started running the magazine full time under my own business, N2 Design and am still running it 8 years later. The magazine now has a client base of over 100 local businesses with monthly editions often featuring more than 60 pages including advertising, puzzles and local newsletters. My aim has always been to ensure both my clients and readers are kept up to date with local happenings, events and monthly business specials and I always try to include something different. Thank you to my clients for your constant support and to all the readers for your continued interest. To mark this milestone, I have decided to venture into the world of digital advertising and am pleased to announce that there will be a full colour digital version of each monthly edition. Simply log into www.issuu.com and type St Francis Info Ads into the search bar and the issue will be viewable in a magazine flip format at the click of a button. The black and white printed version will still be distributed at local businesses in St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis. Thank you for all the emails, letters and words of encouragement for my 100th edition - I truly appreciate everything. Best wishes,

Make sure you VOTE!
DA needs young supporters.
Something has to be done to curb the rising crime. We know SAPS is hard stretched, undermanned and under equipped to make much of a difference. Calibre, G4s and SMHart are doing what they can as are Neighbourhood Watch but it seems we are losing the battle so need to change the status quo to ensure we win the war. If the money for CCTV doesn't come from the SRA where is it going to come from? To date no one other the St Francis Property Owners association have come up with a workable solution yet those throwing stones in an attempt to shoot them down have not made a single suggestion to assist with a plan to save St Francis going the way of so many small towns in the Eastern Cape and KZN. What is quite interesting is that some comments show a total lack of understanding at what the SRA is about. We live in a democracy and your vote will count so the best thing to do is exercise your right to vote. Details of the SRA can be founf on the SFPO wedbsite as can an online voting form to make it easy to vote so whatever your decision, YES or NO get your vote in today.
A rather small turnout at the DA AGM held at St Francis Bay Golf Club on Thursday 25 January gives one an impression that now that Kouga is in the control of the DA all is well. But more concerning than the relatively small gathering was the age group of the assembled patrons. Certainly there were a few sub-60's but not many. The youth are our future and they have to be encouraged and motivated to play a part in the DA's and Kouga's future. Addressing the loyal supporters present, Exec Mayor Elza van Lingen again stressed the need for the council to “romance the townships for without their support the DA would lose control of council at the next election. And to achieve what is needed they, the DA. needs to retain Kouga at the next election. There is little doubt that the DA has improved many aspects of governance but one aspect that still appears lacking is that of collecting outstanding debts. The greater St Francis area owes Kouga Municipality some R17 million in rates, electricity and other debts and the Mayor made it quite clear that this situation would no longer be tolerated. So if you owe the municipality money and you don't pay, maybe invest in a g e n e r a t o r. A n d those owners of plots that haven't paid rates in years prepare to lose your piece of St Francis.
NSRI in dolphin rescue at Cape St Francis On Sunday 21 January a NSRI crewman was alerted to a stranded Bottlenose Dolphin beached on the rocks off at Cape St Francis Lighthouse. The NSRI crewman immediately contacted Dr Greg Hofmeyer from Bayworld who in turn contacted Sarah Jane Smith station commander at NSRI ST Francis for assistance. Sarah immediately mobilised and a crew proceeded to scene to find the dolphin high and dry on the rocks some 25 metres from the sea on an outgoing tide. Along with SANNCOB staff they wrapped and bathed the dolphin in wet towels and buckets of water. With guidance from Dr Hofmeyer they were able get the dolphin onto a Stokes Basket Stretcher and move it to the harbour where it was loaded onto the waiting ski boat, Sea Wolf where skipper Brandon Kennedy and Marc White took over the rescue. Approximately a kilometre offshore in a large 4-metre swell the dolphin was placed back into the sea. According to Sara Jane the dolphin swam away quite confidently. Accolades to all involved, Sarah and her NSRI crew, Dr Hofmeyer, the gentleman (name unknown) who initially alerted the NSRA crew member, Penny a SANNCOB volunteer and both Brendon Kennedy and Marc White for a job well done.
Hector the Heron Th e clo s e rela t ion s h ip b et w een Wen d y MacKenzie and a Grey Heron began when “Hector, as she named him, landed in a bed of ferns alongside her garden wall, with no sign of an adult in the area. Sometime late last year, the remains of a blue egg fell from a tree in her garden, so she presumed that the herons had bred. Last month, during a gale Wendy heard a strange noise outside her lounge, and went to investigate. She found a young bird had fallen into the ferns that line her garden wall. Fortunately her nephew Bernard McKenzie was staying with her at the time, and being a keen fisherman was able to supply her with bait to feed the young bird. No adult heron seemed to be in the area and the heron, whom she has named Hector, has remained on the property ever since. The dog Juno largely ignores him but he made it quite clear that Juno may not come near at feeding time. Recently Wendy was surprised when she saw Hector flying back to her garden from across the canal. She is hoping that he will be able eventually be able to fly off and find his own food and fend for himself but in the meantime, he is providing her with great satisfaction and interest.

TAKE THE PLEDGE say no to single use plastic
The proliferation of plastic products in the last 70 years or so has been extraordinary; quite simply we cannot now live without them. We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, half of which is for single use. More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. Plastic is cheap and incredibly versatile with properties that make it ideal for many applications. However, these qualities have also resulted in it becoming an environmental issue. We have developed a “disposable” lifestyle and estimates are that around 50% of plastic is used just once and thrown away. Unless mass behaviour change happens, the plastic crisis is only going to get worse. Do your part and join the movement to eliminate single use plastics by following these simple steps:

WHAT IS MALARIA?
Malaria is a serious, sometimes fatal, disease spread by mosquitoes and caused by a parasite. The Anopheles mosquito carries the parasite and is where the parasite starts its life cycle. The parasite has multiple subspecies, each causing a different severity of symptoms and responding to different treatments. The parasite first travels to a human's liver to grow and multiply. It then travels in the bloodstream and infects and destroys red blood cells.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Malaria has a wide spectrum of symptoms. After the bite by the infected mosquito occurs, it can take between 7 and 30 days (average is 7 to 15 days) before symptoms start (incubation period). fever and chills
The most common symptoms are: headaches nausea and vomiting general weakness and body aches
The symptoms of malaria can mimic many other diseases, including influenza or a viral syndrome. It is important to tell your doctor or health practitioner about a history of recent travel to an endemic area or other possible exposures.
HOW CAN YOU PREVENT MALARIA? No medication is 100% effective, and therefore the prevention of mosquito bites is of paramount importance. These preventive measures should include the following: Sleeping under bed nets: These should cover all of the bed down to the floor. These nets are most effective if they are treated with an insecticide. Clothing: Clothing that covers most of the exposed skin and shoes that are closed can reduce the risk of bites. All clothing should be tucked in, and pants should be tucked into socks to avoid exposure around the ankles. Treating clothes with insecticides can prevent bites even further. Apply insect repellent to all exposed skin.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR MALARIA? If you are travelling to a malaria area, take an effective malaria prophylaxis. There are several effective preventive drugs. Consult your doctor or travel clinic for the best one for you.
The most effective malaria prophylaxsis namely Malateq is now an OTC product freely available without script

Water shortage and the importance of looking after our Oceans to ensure water for our future
One of the most inspiring quotes by one of the World's leading marine biologists, Sylvia Earle, and reads as follows:
“No water, no life; no blue, no green” Everything in life, particularly our precious water that we require to live, comes from the ocean. With every drop of water you drink, every breath you take, you are connected to the sea.

We currently have 78 learners, ages 3 – 6, enrolled in Talhado Montessori for 2018. It costs us R1200 per month to feed and school one child. However, we only ask R175 per month in school fees. If you feel you can help sponsor a child for a month, a year or if you would like to give a monthly donation into our bank account you would be helping towards the future of our country. Every single cent goes towards the running of the school. Montessori is a concept designed to create independence and a desire for learning from an early age. It fosters a respect for self, for others, and for the environment. The children who have gone through our classrooms are clearly ahead of their game and we trust that by providing the groundwork they will be able to continue to strive to be the top in their class. You can visit our website at www.talhadochildrenshaven.org for banking details, along with Paypal information or you can contact school principal, Cathryn Hempel, directly at cath.hempel@gmail.com or 076 412 6090. Please help us to help them.
