INTERNATIONAL MEN S DAY THURSDAY 19 NOVEMBER While global women’s celebration day was launched to advocate for improved rights and pay for women, International Men's Day focuses on celebrating positive male role models and to raise awareness of men’s issues which are often overlooked. These include: •The high male suicide rate across the world •The educational challenges that face both men and boys at all stages of life •Men’s health, their shorter life expectancy and the fact that they suffer from workplace deaths at a much higher rate than women •Male violence, and the fact that males are also victims to things such as rape, sexual exploitation and domestic violence • The challenges faced by men as parents, especially as single parents or parents that do not have a good relationship with the Mother of their children. There is also focus on Fathers rights •Male survivors of violence or abuse, including domestic abuse •The negative portrayal of men in the media and beyond. This includes male stereotypes that are used by well-known brands in advertising campaigns. International Men’s Day coincides with Movember, when men grow their facial hair in an effort to promote conversations about men’s mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

WHY IS SITTING AROUND A FIRE SO RELAXING? Is there anything better than sitting outside on a beautiful evening, basking in the glow of a fire, chatting with friends and family as the flames flicker in front of you?

Fire has always been part of the human experience. Humans have relied on fire for food, heat, and protection. Fire is hardwired into our DNA because it’s something that we’ve needed and relied on since the dawn of man. Early humans needed fire to be able to eat their food, keep animals and insects away, see in dark places, and keep them warm on a winter’s night. Fire, for most of human history, as always made us feel better. Most relevant to our purposes, fire changed our emotional lives, too. In fact, one could even say fire created our emotional lives. Firelight extended the day beyond daylight, creating a social time after work but before sleep. According to research by anthropologist Polly Wiessner, this exciting new time of day - which mixed the energy of firelight with the impossibility of hunting and gathering - unleashed the magic of human community: In hot seasons, the cool of the evening releases pent up energy; in cold seasons, people huddle together. Body language is dimmed by firelight and awareness of self and others is reduced. Facial expressions - flickering with the flames - are either softened, or in the case of fear or anguish, accentuated. Agendas of the day are dropped while small children fall asleep in the laps of kin. Thanks to fire, humans had time to talk through their emotions about themselves and each other. We could start bonding within and between groups. We could create and pass along culture and tradition. Without fire, all the stuff we like about being human might never have happened. As the nightly campfire has come to be replaced by gas light, lightbulbs, and, eventually, the blue glow of screens, we, as a species, have forgotten about the joys of this special time of night: campfire time. However, our bodies and minds have not forgotten. Anthropologists at the University of Alabama have found that sitting by a campfire lowers blood pressure and other stress indicators: the longer we sit by the fire, the more relaxed we become. This mirrors studies about what happens to us in all natural environments: fire, like the woods generally, produces what researches call a “soft fascination,” modestly grabbing our attention while allowing the analytical parts of our brain to rest. This is the “restoration theory” of nature: nature allows the always-on, critical part of our minds to take it easy, while prodding the long-dormant, open-ended part of our minds to come alive. It’s no wonder that the oldest way of gathering has lasted this long: it relaxes us, warms our hearts and takes us to another plane. And, in line with the Lindy effect, gathering around the campfire is likely to outlast the latest wellness crazes, continuing to be humanity’s go-to way to escape and rejuvenate. Perhaps all the answers you need are not inside of your cellphone screen, but rather among the sparks and flicker of your next moonlit blaze. A glass of good wine or a pint of beer probably wouldn’t hurt either! WRITTEN BY Jon Staff, Founder+CEO, www.getaway.house

Early detection of breast cancer in women

While there is a special focus at this time of the year to raise awareness levels of breast cancer, CANSA encourages women to make their health a priority all year round by being aware of the symptoms of cancer. The risk of COVID-19 infection may well discourage some from visiting their GP or gynaecologist for their annual medical check-up and screening but early detection of cancer is absolutely vital and can save lives. According to the SA Government, the incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing and it is one of the most common cancers among women in South Africa. The National Cancer Registry (NCR) estimates that 19.4 million of South African women of 15 years or older live at risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. WHAT ARE THE TYPICAL SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER? •A lump in your breast or underarm that does not go away •Swelling in your armpit or near your collarbone •Pain or tenderness (although lumps seldom hurt). •A flat or indented area on your breast. •Breast changes such as size, contour, texture or temperature •A nipple which pulls inward, is dimpled or burns, itches or develops sores •Unusual nipple discharge •A marble-like area under the skin which just feels different. SELF-EXAMINATION, CHECK-UPS AND SCREENINGS. Regular annual check-ups and screenings are very important but a regular monthly breast selfexamination can help you to determine if there are any changes to the look and feel of your breasts. If you notice any changes or symptoms described earlier, discuss this with your doctor. Regular self-examination is very important and can improve the chances of surviving breast cancer. Self-examination however does not replace the need for regular and professional check-ups and screenings by your doctor, gynaecologist or health clinic. Please visit the CANSA video for self-examination instructions https://cansa.org.za/womens-health/ From Link pharmacy, your Good Health independent community pharmacy group. Stay informed, stay aware and stay well!

Love may not make the world go round, but I must admit that it makes the ride worthwhile.

The computed axial tomography scan, or CAT scan, was developed at Tufts University in the UK by South African physicist Allan Cormack and Godfrey Hounsfield of EMI Laboratories. Their achievement secured them the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Sasol is the world’s first – and largest – oil-from-coal refinery. It is situated in Sasolburg in South Africa and provides 40% of the country’s fuel. The world’s first heart transplant was performed by Dr Chris Barnard in Cape Town on 3 December 1967. The South African-made speed gun, developed by Somerset West inventor Henri Johnson, was formally launched at The Oval in England during the 1999 Cricket World Cup. The Kreepy Krauly was invented by Ferdinand Chauvier, a hydraulics engineer who came to South Africa from the Belgian Congo in 1951.

Pratley’s famous glue is the only South African invention that has been to the moon. In 1969 the putty was used to hold bits of the Apollo XI mission’s Eagle landing craft together. Krugersdorp engineer George Pratley invented his famous sticky stuff in the 1960s. Dolosse are large, unusually shaped concrete blocks weighing up to 20 tons. The structures are designed to break up wave action and protect harbour walls and coastal installations. Designed by Eric Merrifield and first installed in East London harbour, they are now used all over the world. Q20 was invented in 1950 in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal by a Mr Robertson, as a product to displace water from the distributor caps on the old VW Beetle, which was notorious for stalling in wet weather. On 3 March 2019, Professor Mashudu Tshifularo became the first person to transplant 3D-printed bones for “reconstructive middle ear implants”, at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital. The CSIR’s Gene Expression and Biophysics group designed the first induced pluripotent stem cells in Africa, which opened the door for researchers to investigate various diseases and cures. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research is South Africa's central and premier scientific research and development organisation. It was established by an act of parliament in 1945 and is situated on its own campus in the city of Pretoria.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS END-OF-YEAR FUN AND ADVENTURES A very successful Spring Fun / Run day was held at St Francis College on Saturday 24 October. Well over a hundred runners participated in either a five or a ten kilometre trail run. The routes were mapped by Liz Anderson, an experienced trail runner. Participants ran along the bank of the Kromme River and also through the fields on Boschkloof Farm. The weather was perfect for the event and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the fresh air and scenery. Back at the school, where the running events started and ended, there was a carnival atmosphere with food stalls available, live music and games for the children. A whole lot of fun was had by everyone who came to the school on that day! St Francis College is at that exciting stage of the year when classes are enjoying class excursions. The grade 1 and 2 classes have done the Two Harbours walk and the grade threes have had a camp-out at the school. The grade 7’s will soon be doing the Otter Challenge which is a three-day adventure for the children and includes paddling on the river, cycling the trail routes of Cape St Francis and hiking the coastline. After the exams, which start in the second week of November, there will be more exciting outings for the children – some will be camping and the grade 7’s are going on an outing to Untouched Adventures in the Tsitsikamma. November will be a busy month!

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ST FRANCIS PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION AND THE NON PROFIT COMPANY (SRA). ST FRANCIS PROPERTY OWNERS St Francis Property Owners NPC

St Francis Property Owners Association

What are the differences between the SFPO Association and the SFPO NPC? In essence, the SFPO Association is the ‘ratepayers association’ for St Francis Bay. At the same time, the SFPO NPC is a non-profit company set up to administer the Special Rating Area (SRA). Membership for the SFPO Association is voluntary, but it is recommended because a strong ratepayers association is instrumental in monitoring and influencing service delivery from the Municipality. The SFPO Association provides many benefits to homeowners, including the promotion of ratepayer’s interests (aesthetics, land-use, environmental issues…), input to municipal policies, community policing and support, including feeding the needy in our area, local communication, and further collaboration with other local organisations like the Riparians, the Kromme River Committee, the Disaster Volunteer Group, the Kromme EcoTrust, the Tourism Association, Rotary, etc. With regards to the SFPO NPC, if you own a property in the demarcated SRA area, you pay the SRA levy as part of your municipal invoice from the Kouga Local Municipality, and you by rights a member of the NPC. The SRA levy is used to fund three key projects, being the CCTV Cameras (security), Roads, and the Long Term Beach Restoration Project (river, spit and beach). They are both essential to the restoration of our town. The SFPO Association is currently on a membership drive, as membership runs from October 1 – September 30 each year. For more information please call the SFPO Administration Manager Lyn Aitken on 042 294 0594 or email her at info@sfpo.co.za. Lyn is available in the SFPO office between 08h30 and 13h00 Monday to Friday.
