What is Women’s Month? In South Africa, 9 August is Women's Day and the month of August is National Women's Month. This is an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements and the important role that women of all races and religions have played and continue to play in South African society. On 9 August 1956, more than 20 000 women from all walks of life united in a mass demonstration to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. They protested against the unjust pass laws enforced on women in South Africa. The women were led by Lilian Ngoyi - a trade unionist and political activist, Helen Joseph, Albertina Sisulu, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn. In remembrance of what South African women achieved on that day, 9 August has been declared as National Women's Day and is a public holiday in South Africa. Women's month is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on women's achievements, as well as the problems they have faced in the struggle to be free and the important role they continue to play in society. Apart from their traditional roles as mothers, wives and caregivers, statistics show that women are making great progress in business, politics, academic and economic careers with more and more women reaching top positions. Women of South Africa, be proud of what you have achieved. Let the achievements of those who went before you inspire you to unlock your own strength and motivate you to make a difference in your family, your community or your country.
Go out and celebrate the women that you are. Go out and make a difference this Women's Month!

KOUGA’S FUTURE IS LOOKING BRIGHT. More than 1 000 streetlights and floodlights across the region have been retrofitted with LED lights.“The advantage of LED lights is that they are brighter than conventional bulbs but actually use less energy and last longer, which brings with it cost benefits,” said Kouga Executive Mayor Horatio Hendricks. He said the programme was rolled out in the 2019/20 financial year after the municipality’s Electrical Services section secured R4-million from the national Department of Energy for Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM). “Municipalities are able to apply for this funding to roll out projects such as streetlight replacements and to increase the energy efficiency of municipal buildings and assets such as pump stations,” he explained. “It, therefore, presented us with an excellent opportunity to decrease the region’s electricity usage, especially during peak periods when Eskom charges a higher tariff, without compromising on quality. “Reducing energy consumption is also good for the environment and in line with our efforts to keep Kouga green.” He said the project had included the replacement of 161 1000W floodlights with 400W LEDs while 80 400W floodlights had been replaced with 200W LEDs. A further 860 125W streetlights had been replaced with 37W LEDs. “The funding also made provision for job creation, which enabled us to employ six youths from the area for a period of three months.” He said the project had been complemented with an awareness drive to encourage residents to minimise their electricity usage between the peak hours of 5pm and 7pm and 6am and 9am. “I would like to congratulate our Electrical Services team for successfully implementing the project despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. “Going forward, the LED lights will save the municipality money while staff will also have more time to attend to other projects aimed at improving service delivery to communities.” He said the municipality would be applying for more funding as part its commitment towards service excellence and cutting down on carbon emissions to help save the planet by supporting green energy. He said the aim was to roll out the programme to towns within Kouga fed by Eskom, so as to reduce the streetlight bill from Eskom in those areas as well.
CHURCHILL WATER WORKS REPAIRED Residents in Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp and St Francis, as well as those who receive water directly from the Churchill bulk pipeline, were asked to use water sparingly after the announced that there difficulties supplying water to certain storage reservoirs due to a failure at the Churchill water treatment works. Well the Churchill water works has now been repaired, according to a statement from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Residents and business are, however, urged to continue saving water as dam levels remain low. The levels of the major storage dams supplying Kouga were as follows on 27 July: Kouga Dam 7.18% Churchill Dam 53.37% Impofu Dam 16.97% Loerie 40,91%
WOF TO HELP FIREPROOF CAPE ST FRANCIS Working on Fire (WOF), which started in 2003, is an Expanded Public Works Programme aimed at providing work opportunities to young men and women. The Programme resides under, and is funded by, the Department of Environmental Affairs. Participants are recruited from marginalised communities and trained in fire awareness and education, fire prevention and fire suppression skills, including bush clearing. WOF employs more than 5000 young men and women permanently who have been fully trained as wildfire firefighters and are stationed in more than 200 bases throughout South Africa. They addresses the prevention and control of wildland fires to enhance the sustainability and protection of life and the environment through the implementation of Integrated Fire Management solutions. Starting in the week of 3 August, a team from WOFwill be clearing existing firebreaks in the Irma Booysen and Cape St Francis Reserves in order to prepare Cape St Francis for the summer fire season. Work will begin near the tennis courts and then proceed towards the Birkenhead and Diaz entrances of the Irma Booysen reserve. The work is being organized in partnership between the KOUGA Municipality and FOSTER. It is well known that uncontrolled fires have caused extensive damage to properties in this area over the past few years. Maintains existing fire breaks and the clearing of bush and aliens is an essential part of preventing fires from damaging properties and infrastructure should they occur.

HEALTH
CONSCIOUS
MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS
In a world that is plagued with uncertainty, turmoil and constant fear-provoking media reports – levels of general anxiety are at an all-time high. Excessive worry about the unknown, combined with a feeling of lack of control is the root cause of many anxiety disorders. The Coronavirus pandemic is delivering doses of these unsettling scenarios to the whole world on a daily basis. So how can we combat these challenges and protect our mental health? SET A ROUTINE It is important to take life one day at the time. Divide your days into manageable chunks and get into a routine. Get up at a regular time, shower, have breakfast and make a plan for the day. Giving yourself structure will help give you a feeling of control, along with helping to keep you motivated. KEEP CONNECTED WITH PEOPLE Staying in contact with people on a daily basis is really important to help maintain a sense of normality and can help reduce feelings of isolation. Whether it’s Whatsapp messages, voice notes, video calls or old fashioned phone calls – scheduling in regular catch-ups or even spontaneous calls is a great way to remind each other – that we’re all in this together and we’re not alone. WASH YOUR HANDS – BUT NOT EXCESSIVELY Hand hygiene recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is to regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water – excessive levels of hand washing is not necessary. EXERCISE CREATIVELY AND EAT A BALANCED DIET There’s lots of ways to keep active without leaving the house and without the need for fancy equipment. Personal trainers are all taking to social media to provide free home workouts for people of all ages under a lockdown or in self-isolation. It is vital to ensure you eat three regular balanced meals per day, as this will help to keep your blood sugar levels stable and can help regulate your mood and energy levels. Make sure you keep well hydrated too by drinking plenty of water. LIMIT NEWS INTAKE AND BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU READ Fake news is rife across the internet on a regular basis – with no exceptions being made in terms of the coronavirus. Staying informed about the situation via reliable sources is a sensible option, but limit your news and social media intake to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS TERM TWO NEWS St Francis College has reached the end of a very topsy-turvy term two. It has been a long term, starting two weeks earlier than originally planned, due to the national closure of schools in March and the subsequent rearrangement of our year planner. The first six weeks of the term were conducted via remote learning during the lockdown period. Classes at St Francis College were phased in during the first two weeks of June and since then it has been school-as-usual, or as close to that as we have been able to have it. Classes have staggered starting and ending times each day and each child or staff member on the campus has to go through a daily screening process which involves sanitising of hands and shoes and temperature checks. Each class remains in its “bubble so as to minimise contact between individuals. Unfortunately, there have been no extra-mural activities during the term, although the children have had PT classes which have allowed them some exercise time, out in the fresh air of the farm. The children and the staff have done so well to continue with classes throughout the term and to keep on top of the academic requirements in each grade. Everyone can feel justly proud of what has been achieved. End-of-term reports will be issued as usual and these will reflect the curriculum coverage expectations for this time of the year. The school will be on holiday from 5 August until 31 August, with term 3 commencing on 1 September. All the children, parents and teachers deserve a well-earned break. Happy Holidays!

While wild salmon are naturally pink due to the large amount of shrimp in their diet, farm-raised salmon eat differently. In order to achieve that pleasing pink colour, salmon farmers add carotenoids (plant pigments) to the fish feed to mimic the natural hue of wild salmon. 7. Bananas, along with cucumbers and kiwis, are classed as berries, whereas strawberries, blackberries and raspberries are not. Though some green peppers are unripe red peppers, green, yellow, orange, and red peppers are all unique plants with their own seeds. 9. 1 in 4 of every hazelnut on this planet makes its way into a jar of Nutella.
