HEALTH
CONSCIOUS
BURNS AND HOW TO TREAT THEM
•An estimated 180 000 deaths every year are caused by burns - the vast majority in low and middle-income countries. •Non-fatal burn injuries are a leading cause of morbidity. •Burns occur mainly in the home and workplace A burn is an injury to the skin or other organic tissue primarily caused by heat or due to radiation, radioactivity, electricity, friction or contact with chemicals. Thermal (heat) burns occur when some or all of the cells in the skin or other tissues are destroyed by: • hot liquids (scalds) • hot solids (contact burns) • flames (flame burns) Basic guidance on first aid for burns is provided below.
WHAT TO DO •Stop the burning process by removing clothing and irrigating the burns. •Extinguish flames by allowing the patient to roll on the ground, or by applying a blanket, or by using water or other fire-extinguishing liquids. •Use cool running water to reduce the temperature of the burn. •In chemical burns, remove or dilute the chemical agent by irrigating with large volumes of water. •Wrap the patient in a clean cloth or sheet and transport to the nearest facility for medical care.
WHAT NOT TO DO •Do not start first aid before ensuring your own safety (switch off electrical current, wear gloves for chemicals etc.) •Do not apply paste, oil, haldi (turmeric) or raw cotton to the burn. •Do not apply ice because it deepens the injury. •Avoid prolonged cooling with water because it will lead to hypothermia. •Do not open blisters until topical antimicrobials can be applied, such as by a health-care provider. •Do not apply any material directly to the wound as it might become infected. •Avoid application of topical medication until the patient has been placed under appropriate medical care.

Influenza and COVID-19 similarities and differences As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve, comparisons have been drawn to influenza. Both cause respiratory disease, yet there are important differences between the two viruses and how they spread. Firstly, COVID-19 and influenza viruses have a similar disease presentation. That is, they both cause respiratory disease, which presents as a wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild through to severe disease and death. Secondly, both viruses are transmitted by contact, droplets and fomites. As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue), are important actions all can take to prevent infection. How are COVID-19 and influenza viruses different? The speed of transmission is an important point of difference between the two viruses. Influenza has a shorter median incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) and a shorter serial interval (the time between successive cases) than COVID19 virus. The serial interval for COVID-19 virus is estimated to be 5-6 days, while for influenza virus, the serial interval is 3 days. This means that influenza can spread faster than COVID-19. Further, transmission in the first 3-5 days of illness, or potentially pre-symptomatic transmission – transmission of the virus before the appearance of symptoms – is a major driver of transmission for influenza. In contrast, while we are learning that there are people who can shed COVID-19 virus 24-48 hours prior to symptom onset, at present, this does not appear to be a major driver of transmission. Those most at risk for severe influenza infection are children, pregnant women, elderly, those with underlying chronic medical conditions and those who are immunosuppressed. For COVID-19, our current understanding is that older age and underlying conditions increase the risk for severe infection. What medical interventions are available for COVID-19 and influenza viruses? While there are a number of therapeutics currently in clinical trials in China and more than 20 vaccines in development for COVID-19, there are currently no licensed vaccines or therapeutics for COVID-19. In contrast, antivirals and vaccines available for influenza. While the influenza vaccine is not effective against COVID-19 virus, it is highly recommended to get vaccinated each year to prevent influenza infection
you DidKNOW ? 10 Interesting World Biodiversity Facts:
Friday, 5 June is World Environment Day 2020 This year the theme of is “Celebrate Biodiversity. Biodiversity is the term used to describe the many different living things here on earth. These living things include animals, plants, bacteria, fungi, and other living organisms. Biodiversity is often used to describe the total number of different species within an ecosystem. This amount ranges among the various ecosystems in different regions around the world. 1. Coral reefs have the most diversity of all ecosystems on earth. 2. On land, areas near the equator tend to be more diverse because of the pleasant climate. 3. Biodiversity is very important to an ecosystem because each species plays a different role in the maintenance of the ecosystem. 4. The increase in global warming is a huge factor that decreases biodiversity by destroying habitats of certain organisms. 5. Changes in ocean temperature, length of seasons, and amount of precipitation are all factors that affect the level of biodiversity. 6. A biodiversity hotspot is an area that contains organisms (both plants and animals) that do not live in any other part of the world. 7. Madagascar is an example of a biodiversity hotspot because roughly 98% of its living organisms cannot survive anywhere else on Earth. 8. Although many governments around the world have passed laws to ensure biodiversity, there are over 300 extremely endangered species that have no laws to protect them. 9. Pollution and the introduction of foreign species are other factors that contribute to the decrease in biodiversity by hindering the proper development of ecosystems. 10. About .1% of species are lost each year.
ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS BACK TO SCHOOL! Since the start of the second term on 15 April, the St Francis College pupils have been doing remote learning. Everyone quickly learnt the new skills required in order to function in a digital environment and then we got on with the learning. It was actually a lot of fun - mostly - and some really creative work was done during this time.
The Grade 2's made Autumn leaf art.
The Grade 4s are learning The Grade 5's are learning about weather elements in about strengthening materials geography and made their own rain gauges. and had to design a bridge
On 1 June, St Francis College will be re-opening its doors. Children from grade 0 to grade 7 will return to school grade by grade during the course of the first week and thereafter these classes will all be at school, although they will follow staggered starting and ending times. The nursery school will not be opening for the time being. Covid-19 precautionary measures have been put in place – children will be screened on arrival, hand sanitiser will be regularly applied and masks or screens will be worn. The necessary social distancing will be observed in all classes. In a recent letter to parents Mr Warwick Osmond, the headmaster, said the following:” I am really looking forward to seeing the children back at school. Despite the new reality, I am convinced that being at school and interacting with peers is healthier than being isolated from one another. If we apply our safe-guards, I am confident that we will be able to manage in a Covid-19 world.”.

The fund is being organised and managed by the Disaster Volunteer Group, Rotary and United Church. We are giving this program our full support and will donate the cost of a food parcel (R200) for every new or renewed membership subscription received during the crisis. In order for us to maximise our support for the COVID-19 Food Relief Program, we have launched our 2020/21 annual subscription appeal with immediate effect. The voluntary annual subscription for a property owner/resident is R500, or R330 for a pensioner. The SFPO Association membership runs from 1st October to 30th September annually.
