Everyone has been affected by breast cancer in some way. We’ve known someone, we’ve loved someone, or we’ve been someone who has fought this disease. There is so much more to breast cancer awareness month than pink ribbons. If breast cancer is part of your story, you know how hard the journey can be. IS PRINT DEAD? RESEARCH SAYS NO
In today's digital marketing landscape, it's common to hear the question "Isn't print dead?" The answer is a resounding "no." Despite the digital revolution, traditional marketing has not gone bust. We are a society of technologically-obsessed people who aren’t comfortable unless we are constantly connected via some sort of digital device. And, because the entire world has moved online, some in the advertising industry would have you believe print advertising is dead and buried. But this simply isn’t true. Print is still very much alive. In fact, advertisers who make print a part of their marketing mix have the potential to significantly increase their response rates. The future of print remains bright as long as there is a need to communicate. Print presently enjoys a resurgence as one way for individuals to disconnect from a noisy online world. It's also a trusted medium that provides an emotional connection and longevity that you cannot replicate by screen. It commands the attention of your target audience and compel them to explore something they otherwise might not have. Digital may rule the world, but people do still like to have a tangible product and enjoy switching off from the outside world by picking up physical media, be it a book or advertising magazine. Engagement, recall and retention are vital to marketing. With the fleeting nature of some digital ads, the message doesn’t stay in the reader’s mind long enough to leave an impression. Magazine articles don’t appeal to everyone, so in a digital setting, the reader moves on. With a printed magazine, however, the reader will continue to page through to find something of interest, which exposes them to many ads. Print isn’t as easily abandoned as digital.
One of the best benefits of print media is that it has a higher frequency opportunity of viewing than online ads. Since the newspaper or magazine may sit on a table or rack at a business or home, repeated exposures are allowed. Unlike digital messaging, print media does not disappear after generating an impression. Because of this long shelf life, you can benefit from having your ad seen by more people, more often. The most effective marketing campaigns use a combination of print and digital advertising. When you combine print and digital advertising, you’ll cover all of your marketing bases and deliver a more holistic advertising strategy. In addition to reaching your entire target audience, you’ll deliver a personalized experience. The key is to determine the best way to go about it for your business. The Internet isn’t just a wonderful tool. In this day and age it’s a necessity when it comes to advertising for your company, organization, or business, but it isn’t the only one. The Info Ads magazine has been in circulation for over 10 years - with the first issue printed in April 2010! It started off as an 8 page booklet and now features up to 40 pages during the low season and up to 80 pages during the holiday season. I think it’s safe to say that it’s a trusted advertising medium and that readers enjoy the publication. The black and white print keeps the cost down for advertisers, makes it affordable for smaller businesses and the high resolution ensures it’s always a great quality print. Saying that, we did start issuing a digital version earlier this year and this brings even more advertising advantages for our advertisers including a wider reach and the interactive features that digital magazines offer. These include full colour adverts with interactive links direct to an advertisers Facebook pages, websites and emails. The digital issue can be viewed on our Facebook page at St Francis Info Ads and it includes all our regular features including monthly tide tables, puzzles and local offerings. We have plenty of new features lined up for future editions and look forward to evolving with it while keeping the print edition growing too.

Kidney Health and Kidney Disease Basics
Kidneys are essential to having a healthy body. They are responsible for filtering waste products, excess water, and other impurities out of the blood. These toxins are stored in the bladder and then removed during urination. The kidneys also regulate pH, salt, and potassium levels in the body. They produce hormones that regulate blood pressure and control the production of red blood cells KIDNEY DISEASE When your kidneys are damaged, waste products and fluid can build up in your body. That can cause swelling in your ankles, nausea, weakness, poor sleep, and shortness of breath. Without treatment, the damage can get worse and your kidneys may eventually stop working. That’s serious, and it can be life-threatening. KIDNEY DISEASE SYMPTOMS Your kidneys are very adaptable. They can compensate for some of the problems that can happen when you have kidney disease. So if your kidney damage gets worse slowly, your symptoms will reveal themselves slowly over time. In fact, you may not feel symptoms until your disease is advanced. You might have the following symptoms: • High blood pressure • Nausea and vomiting •Loss of appetite •A metallic taste in your mouth Fatigue • Weakness • Trouble thinking • Sleep issues • Muscle twitches and cramps • Chest pain, if fluid builds up around the lining of the heart • Shortness of breath, if fluid builds up in the lungs KIDNEY DISEASE CAUSES Acute kidney disease causes: If your kidneys suddenly stop working, doctors call it acute kidney injury or acute renal failure. The main causes are: • Not enough blood flow to the kidneys • Direct damage to the kidneys •Urine backed up in the kidneys Autoimmune disease, when your immune system attacks your body ,can also cause an acute kidney injury. People with severe heart or liver failure commonly go into acute kidney injury as well. KIDNEY DISEASE TREATMENT Some forms of kidney disease are treatable. The goals of these treatments are to ease symptoms, help keep the disease from getting worse, and lessen complications. In some cases, your treatment may help restore some of your kidney function.

There are a lot of good, practical reasons to make learning something new every day your habit, but the best reason has nothing to do with practicality - we are learning creatures, and the lifelong practice of learning is what makes us humans and our lives worthwhile.

ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS LOTS OF FUN IN TERM THREE AT ST FRANCIS COLLEGE The children at St Francis College have been enjoying some outdoor activity on Tuesday afternoons. This has been so much fun after months of not being able to do any extra-curricular activities. The farm environment is ideal for nature walks and exploring, or doing trail riding. The children have done all of this and have also had an afternoon of fishing in the farm dam. Junior primary children learnt how to find kindling, build a fire and then in true Heritage Day style, they cooked their own boerewors. On the Heritage Day public holiday the children supported the Kromme Enviro Trust during their annual Beach Clean Up at Granny’s Pool. The goal was to fill five bags and with a lot of team work the children achieved the goal and won R1000 for their school! On the Friday, as a continuation of the Heritage Day celebrations, the children wore traditional dress to school and boerewors rolls were eaten while enjoying some good South African tunes. A big shout out to The Village Superspar for donating the boerewors and rolls!

EMERGENCY PLAN FOR THE SPIT The Spit has been breached 4 times since early in April. The SFPO NPC has been monitoring the Spit over the past year, as we did expect it to eventually breach during these winter storms. We assisted the Municipality with developing an Emergency Plan a year ago in anticipation of the Spit breaching. The Municipality agreed to action the emergency plan. This includes building an emergency revetment along the Spit from the Aldabarra revetment to a point in the vicinity of the Pump House. The Riparians have during this time concentrated on dredging sand onto the northern end of the Spit, while the SFPO NPC focused on completing the EIA submission and preparing for the implementation of the long term coastal protection solution, entailing placing sand on the beach and building groynes. BREACHES OF THE SPIT The latest breach occurred at the northern end of the emergency revetment that is still under construction. The Municipality will finish the emergency revetment. The first groyne will be placed in the vicinity of the Pump House. BREACH REPAIRS It is important that the Municipality’s contractor closes this breach as quickly as possible, given the high tides we are experiencing around the Equinox (22 September) as it is affecting the properties near the Pump House. The Municipality has reacted quickly to each of these breaches, and have been built some 420 metres of this revetment to-date, with a further 200 metres to complete the revetment. LONG TERM SOLUTION : GROYNE FIELD AND SAND NOURISHMENT The long term solution is designed to push back the sea by some 40 metres along its entire length of 2.7 kilometres, and restore our beach as a public amenity. It will provide improved protection to the many beachfront properties that have had to repair and strengthen their revetments over the past couple of years. The long term solution is designed to: 1. Restore the beach by pushing the sea back some 40 metres through moving some 1 million cubic metres of sand onto the beach 2. Building up and keeping the sand on our beach with the use of groynes. Groynes are not a defence structure but rather a sand retention structure 3. Change the role of the revetments from acting as the primary defence, to relying on them as a last line of defence WE WILL START CONSTRUCTION OF THE LONG TERM SOLUTION ONCE WE HAVE RECEIVED ENVIRONMENTAL APPROVAL AND WE HAVE BUILT UP SUFFICIENT FUNDS TO DO SO.T

1. Saying “octopi” is incorrect. Though “octopi” is colloquially sound and very fun to say, the correct plural of octopus is octopuses.
2.Octopuses are widely considered to be the most intelligent of all invertebrates. Scientists say octopuses are capable of learning from experience and maintaining short - and long-term memory. 3. Octopuses have three hearts. And blue blood. Two hearts serve to move blood past the gills, while the third pumps blood through the rest of the body. 4. They aren’t called “tentacles,” they’re called ‘’arms.” Tentacles are reserved for squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses. Octopuses have eight arms, zero tentacles. 5. Each arm has a mind of it’s own. Some two-thirds of an octopus’s neurons reside in its arms, meaning they can react to stimuli and function at a fairly high level on their own, even when severed from the body. 6. Their camouflage abilities are out of this world. For ocean predators, octopuses are some of the most difficult prey to spot. Their skin changes colour and pattern to blend in with their surroundings. 7. They can “see” with their skin. Scientists recently found that octopus skin contains the same light-sensitive proteins present in octopus eyes, meaning an octopus’s skin can sense and respond to light without information from the eyes or brain. 8. Rather than swimming, octopuses often walk along the seaf loor. When an octopus swims, the heart that pumps blood to its organs stops beating, so crawling is a more efficient, less exhausting alternative. 9. One of the most distinctive characteristics of an octopus is that after mating and giving birth, both the male and female die. After the male octopus has given the female its hectocotylus (mating arm), it soon swims away and dies. The female octopus can lay up to 400,000 eggs and due to its obsessive and aggressive nature when tending to its eggs, it prioritises its motherhood duties and therefore stops eating. 10. Despite pre-dating dinosaurs, the lifespan of an octopus is actually very short. Its maximum lifespan is five years and some octopuses live for only six months – once an octopus reaches mating maturity, it actually symbolises the end of its life. 11 There are over 300 different species of octopus roaming our oceans – one of which only has seven arms! Smallest: Octopus wolfi, Largest: Giant Pacific octopus Most dangerous: Blue-ringed octopus
