WHAT IS GOUT AND WHAT CAUSES IT?

Gout is a common and complex form of arthritis that can affect anyone. It's characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in one or more joints, most often in the big toe. symptoms may come and go, but there are ways to manage symptoms and prevent flares. SYMPTOMS Intense joint pain - Gout usually affects the big toe, but it can occur in any joint. Other commonly affected joints include the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists and fingers. Lingering discomfort - After the most severe pain subsides, some joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks. Inflammation and redness - The affected joint or joints become swollen, tender, warm and red. Limited range of motion - As gout progresses, you may not be able to move your joints normally. WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR If you experience sudden, intense pain in a joint, call your doctor. Gout that goes untreated can lead to worsening pain and joint damage. Seek medical care immediately if you have a fever and a joint is hot and inflamed, which can be a sign of infection. CAUSES Gout occurs when urate crystals accumulate in your joint, causing the inflammation and intense pain of a gout attack. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines - substances that are found naturally in your body. Purines are also found in certain foods, including red meat, organ meats and seafoods. Alcoholic beverages, especially beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose) promote higher levels of uric acid. RISK FACTORS You're more likely to develop gout if you have high levels of uric acid in your body. Factors that increase the uric acid level in your body include: Diet - Eating a diet rich in red meat and shellfish and drinking beverages sweetened with fruit sugar. Alcohol consumption, especially of beer, also increases the risk of gout. Weight - If you're overweight, your body produces more uric acid and your kidneys have a more difficult time eliminating uric acid. Medical conditions - Certain diseases and conditions increase risk of gout including untreated high blood pressure and chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and heart and kidney diseases.

AUGUST SUGURU PUZZLE Suguru puzzles are quite different than Sudoku - you'll see that the grid is subdivided into containers or cages with heavy lines, each of which is 1 to 5 cells in size. You need to fill each container with unique digits, counting up from 1. So for example a 2-square container contains the numbers 1 and 2. A 5-square container contains the numbers from 1 to 5. Adjacent (touching) cells may never contain the same number, and this includes diagonally adjacent cells. That's it!

you DidKNOW ? 18 amazing inventions created by women

We're used to hearing about inventions or discoveries made by men. However, although they were systematically hampered for centuries, women have contributed their fair share of cutting-edge inventions, many of which we use every day.

1. Circular saw - Inventor: Tabitha Babbitt Year: 1812 While working as a weaver, Babbitt watched people struggling to cut wood with a pit saw. Determined to help, she attached a circular blade to her spinning wheel and invented the much more efficient circular saw. 2. Dishwasher - Inventor: Josephine Cochran Year: 1872 Though other prototypes existed, Cochran's design was the first that used water pressure rather than scrubbers to remove debris. 3. Life raft - • Inventor: Maria Beasley Year /: 1882 Though Beasley had already made a fortune on a barrel-hooping machine patent, this serial inventor went on to design an improved life raft with guard rails that was fireproof and foldable for easy storage. 4. Car heater - Inventor: Margaret A. Wilcox Year /: 1893 Taking advantage of the heat generated as a byproduct of combustion, Wilcox invented a way to heat cars by channeling air over the engine and into the cab. 5 Windshield wiper - Inventor: Mary Anderson Year /: 1903 After receiving a patent in 1903, Anderson tried to sell her new windshield cleaning device to a manufacturer, who refused, stating that her invention lacked practical value. 6. Electric refrigerator - Inventor: Florence Parpart Year: 1914 In a time when people were still using ice-boxes, Parpart patented an electric refrigerator that she successfully marketed and improved upon for years. 7 Microelectrode - Inventor: Ida Hyde Year: 1921 The first female researcher at Harvard Medical School, Hyde created one of the earliest models of an intracellular micropipette electrode, which allowed her to stimulate and monitor a cell without disturbing the cell wall 8. Low-reflection glass - Inventor: Katharine Blodgett Year: 1935 Before Blodgett's revolutionary non-reflective glass coating was invented, glass wasn't nearly as useful or reliable as it is today. Her invention has proven indispensable in the making of camera lenses, microscopes and eyeglasses.

9. Wireless transmission technology - Inventor: Hedy Lamarr Year: 1941 During World War II, Lamarr, who also happened to be a movie star, created a frequency-hopping communication system that could guide torpedos without being detected. Her groundbreaking work paved the way for the modern invention of WiFi, GPS, and bluetooth. 10. Thermoelectric power generator - Inventor: Maria Telkes Year: 1947 A pioneer in the field of solar thermal storage systems, MIT researcher Maria Telkes created the first solar-heated system for her home in Dover, Massachusetts. 11. Disposable Nappy - Inventor: Marion Donovan Year: 1950 First inventing a leak-proof diaper covering, then a fully disposable diaper, her inventions were completely ignored as “unnecessary and impractical” by the male manufacturers she pitched them to, Donovan took matters into her own hands and sold them straight to Saks Fifth Avenue. 12. Hydyne rocket fuel - Inventor: Mary Sherman Morgan Year 1957 Explorer I, the first satellite ever launched into orbit by the United States, owed its success to Hydyne, the improved rocket fuel that Morgan created during her time as technical lead at North American Aviation's Rocketdyne Division. 13. Bullet-proof fiber - Inventor: Stephanie Kwolek Year: 1966 While searching for strong but lightweight plastics to use in car tires, DuPont researcher Stephanie Kwolek discovered what would become known as Kevlar. This revolutionary fiber has saved countless lives in the form of bullet-proof vests, and is also used in numerous applications, such as bridge cables, canoes, and 14. Caller ID and call-waiting - Inventor: Shirley Ann Jackson Year: 1970's Shirley Ann Jackson was an award-winning theoretical physicist. Her contributions to the field of telecommunications led to the invention of numerous technologies, including caller ID and call-waiting, as well as solar cells and fiber optic cables.frying pans. 15. Space station batteries - Inventor: Olga Gonzalez Year: 1980 The International Space Station relies on solar power, but for a third of its rotation, the earth blocks the sun's rays. Gonzalez-Sanabria's long-life nickel hydrogen batteries keep the International Space Station powered up during that dark portion of its rotation. 16. Blissymbol printer - Inventor: Rachel Zimmerman Year: 1984 At only 12 years old, Zimmerman invented software that allows people with speech disabilities to communicate non-verbally by using symbols on a touchpad that are then translated to written language. 17. Laser cataract surgery - Inventor: Patricia Bath Year: 1986 Bath's patented Laserphaco Probe allows doctors to dissolve cataracts quickly and painlessly before applying new lenses to patients' eyes. This technology is used worldwide to prevent blindness due to cataracts. 18. Stem cell isolation - Inventor: Ann Tsukamoto Year 1991 A vital breakthrough in cancer research, Tsukamoto's co-patented process of isolating human stem cells found in bone marrow has saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Bush Clearing Update and Overview, by Nic Munday/SFPO Association The situation regarding bush clearing on private residential erven in St Francis Bay. 1. A property owner is solely responsible for the maintenance of their erf. 2. The erf must comply with published bylaws available on the KLM website. 3. There are two key triggers for issuing a notice to 'clear' an erf: i) a complaint lodged with the Municipality, or ii) by an uninitiated inspection of an erf by the Municipality. 4. Only the Municipality is mandated to issue a notice to clear an erf. 5. How the erf is cleared, and by whom, cannot be dictated to the owner by private individuals or interested parties, however well-intentioned. The Municipality does not prescribe a clearing method. 6. The decision to appoint a contractor is usually made by the owner based on economics. For example, automated clearing is generally less expensive (around R12.00 per sq meter) than manual clearing (ranging from around R16.00 to R25.00 per sq meter). 7. Not all erven can be cleared by automated means, depending on the topography. 8. Protected species of vegetation may not be destroyed in the clearing process, without explicit permission from the Municipality. 9. No individuals or interested parties are entitled to 'inspect' an erf without the owner's permission; doing so constitutes trespassing. 10. While it seems true that 'comprehensive clearing' by automated means may result in alien species recovering faster than indigenous species, this is the owner's issue. The owner is then simply required to comply with relevant legislation regarding removing alien species by way of routine 11. maintenance. Residential erven are, by definition, designated for building homes, not as nature reserves. 12. Therefore, the proclamation of a residential area, again by definition, entails the clearing of erven. The only legislation relating to the aesthetics of erf maintenance is that of not destroying protected 13. species. Different individuals and interested parties have differing views on how an erf should ideally be 14. maintained. These are necessarily based on opinion rather than legislative or regulatory facts. The SFPO does not actively endorse or promote individual bush-clearing contractors or project managers. The selection of a contractor is entirely at the property owner's discretion, and contractors may be sourced from wherever the property owner sees fit.
