THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-LOVE For many ,the concept of self-love is an overblown theory and they often ignore its importance. People aspire to be perfect and perfectionism is considered a greater asset or attribute than self-love. Studies have shown that self-love is the key to mental wellbeing and it keeps depression and anxiety at bay. Modern society is shaped in such a way that we are sort of bound to constantly compete against each other, or even ourselves. We are always trying to reach our short-term goals and trying to better ourselves to match the expectations set upon us by the society. As a consequence, we end up being too hard on ourselves all too often without even realising. Love is the only thing that keeps us going and makes us less robotic in a world which requires us to work, think and act like we are programmed bots. Everyone needs love and we spend most of our energy on loving others - be it friends, spouses, children or family. We all like to spread the love, but the question is - do we produce enough for our own selves? We cannot always expect to rely only on external sources for love and that is where the concept of self-love comes in. A person who practices self-love will never need to depend on others to be happy and it is an empowering feeling to be happy on the inside. When our loved ones make a mistake we often forgive them easily, but when we make a mistake we are often too hard on ourselves. The first step of self-love is realising that we are only human and it is okay to make mistakes; it is okay to lose at times; it is okay to not have the best day‌week‌or month. Self-love has many benefits; the first benefit is greater life satisfaction. When we love ourselves more we instantly change our perspective of the world. Self-love can give us a more positive attitude towards life. The second benefit of self-love is that it can encourage us to pick up good habits. Self-love means loving your body, soul, and mind. Therefore, people who love themselves often refrain from doing things that will have an impact on their tranquillity. Thus, it can help us adapt healthy habits. Another important benefit of self-love is better mental health. People who love themselves are less likely to suffer from anxiety or depression; self-love also paves the way to a positive mindset which is an essential ingredient for success in life and for mental wellbeing. Learning to love yourself also reduces stress, lessens procrastination and makes you more focussed at work and at home. Put yourself a little higher on your priority list; think highly of yourself as the world takes you at your own estimate. Consider yourself important too; love yourself as much as you love your friends and family. Happiness and self-love are interconnected; and we all deserve to be happy. We should not strive to be perfect, rather we should strive to love ourselves and pass on the love to others. Self-love is the key to happiness and a person who is happy is in a far better position to achieve success in every aspect of life.

A delightful Article by Sandra Hardie on life in St Francis in the 60's & 70's Lockdown has provided an opportunity to dig out all our Super 8 Cine reels and what fun we have had. We were afforded such enormous privilege to be part of the beginnings of St Francis Bay. I originally came to St Francis Bay with my parents about 1960. We had a house in Harley Street. When I say “house the dwelling consisted of two rondavels joined together by a wall with a washtub in the middle. There was not another building in sight. Gas lights at night. The area abounded with wildlife - Bushbuck, Duiker, Porcupine, Honey Badger, Otter, Bushpig, Mongoose, Caracal and Cape Leopard, together with prolific birdlife. These creatures were unthreatened and comfortable to be amongst us. Leighton would bring us our milk on a donkey cart every morning. He was just starting the canals. One has to wonder what this humble man with enormous vision would have thought of today's opulence and ostentation. George and I bought a holiday home in Lovemore Crescent in 1971. It was the first spec house built by Cathy and Duncan Lethbridge and from its vantage point one looked down on a mile wide beach, the odd dirt road and only one other house, that of Joan Anderson. We slept with the balcony doors open and whilst the dogs slept the wildlife came into the garden, such as it was, because there was no need of fences. We went to the beach and left an unlocked house. There was no enticement for criminals in those days. Leighton built the hotel in the early 1970s and it provided a great asset for residents and holiday makers alike. Every Saturday morning everyone congregated in the pub and Leighton would serve piping hot chips on a steel tray. One of the de Vos family members from Goed Geloof Farm would arrive on his mule which would be tethered outside the pub. He was often to be seen returning to Goed Geloof on the mule but this time facing backwards with arms around its belly.
There was one tiny shop and a big lorry would arrive with bread, milk and vegetables at 2pm when a bun fight ensued to be there first. Of course there was no bridge so the open truck had travelled 30km on the dirt road from Humansdorp, with seventeen farm gates to contend with and its contents would be smothered in dust and the milk often tainted. It was then that we acquired our milk from the de Vos family who lived on Goed Geloof Farm, the original dwelling of the area. They would also provide us with vegetables and sometimes a turkey at Christmas. Farther down the road was Mr Olivier who kept chickens and provided us with eggs. Every holiday we would make one or more treks to Humansdorp for steaks at Kontiki Restaurant. They were the very best. One sat in small cubicles with very upright backs so it was not the most comfortable place but it had such charm and we loved our outings there. On the long drive back to St Francis the headlights would pick up countless wildlife and we would often stop to move a Nightjar. Swiss Cottage was opened by Toby and that became a jolly place for an excellent Sunday lunch. Toby would play several instruments and sing. The Daces opened a restaurant in what is today Big Time Taverna which was beautifully appointed and also served excellent meals. Overlooking the Marina Small Boat Harbour it was a most pleasant place to eat.

Why New Year Resolutions Matter
The pandemic has occupied the minds of many, perhaps taking one’s eye off other common diseases which afflict so many people. In most instances, apart from treatment and medication, a change of lifestyle can go a long way towards improving one’s health and well-being. This is where New Year resolutions come to the fore, often forgotten and neglected later in the year. It is not easy to create and maintain new behaviour. Whatever your New Year resolutions are – exercise, healthy eating, quitting tobacco or stressing less – here are some tips from Harvard University to help you on your way. 1. Dream big. Whether you want to compete in a marathon or just fit into your favourite clothes again, think and dream big. It will take perseverance and determination but those close to you will identify with your dream and support the cause. 2. Break the dream into small steps. Now break down that dream into small steps. Start with easy steps so that you can quickly tick those boxes, building your confidence to tackle more difficult tasks on the list. 3. Understand what’s stopping you from changing. Until you grasp what is stopping you, it’s difficult to break a habit. Why are you eating between meals when you’re not hungry? What’s stopping you from exercising for 10 minutes? Worried that you’ll have a heart attack? Go for a check-up with your GP. Enjoy having a cigarette while taking your break? Find a healthier way to enjoy your break. Go for a 5 minute walk. 4. Commit yourself. Accept accountability by committing to people that you don’t want to let down. Connect with like-minded people with similar goals. 5. Give yourself a medal. You don’t have to wait until the finishing line to celebrate. Health changes are incremental so acknowledge both small and big steps along the way. Tell your friends and family and let them celebrate with you. 6. Learn from the past. Whenever you fail to achieve a milestone don’t beat yourself up about it. Take time out to consider what worked and what didn’t work. Were you too ambitious? If so, scale back – put a revised plan in place. Break up the big challenge into smaller steps so that you can tick the boxes and build new confidence. 7. Give thanks for what you do. Forget perfection. Set your sights on finishing that marathon, not on running it. If you compete to complete, you’ll be a winner even if you walk as much as you run.

WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER CHANGING YOUR LIFESTYLE AND HABITS? Type 2 Diabetes: According to World Health Organisation, this most common form of diabetes is found mostly in people with excess body fat and where there is physical inactivity. Smoking is also a contributor. WHO recommends at least 10 minutes of regular, moderate exercise per day. Left untreated, potential risks can include: Heart and blood pressure disease; Nerve damage; Kidney damage; Eye damage; Slow healing; Hearing impairment; Skin conditions; Sleep apnoea, and Alzheimer’s disease. Obesity: The Centre for Disease Control lists the impact of obesity, including: High blood pressure; High LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol; Type 2 diabetes; Coronary heart disease; Stroke; Gall bladder disease; Osteoarthritis; Sleep apnoea; Many types of cancer; Depression and anxiety; Body pain, and a low quality of life. While some medication or conditions can contribute to obesity, it is mostly caused by a poor diet and inactivity. High Blood Pressure: Also referred to as hypertension, this disease is often referred to as the ‘silent killer’. Like Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity, the condition can also be managed through lifestyle changes (often combined with medication). Potential risks of hypertension include: Heart attack; Stroke; Kidney failure and Blindness. We can explore more common diseases where lifestyle plays a role such as heart conditions and cancer, but these examples illustrate that making a New Year resolution to improve lifestyle choices can save lives and lifestyle in the years ahead. Making behavioral changes is never easy. It is however easy to make an appointment with your GP or clinic for a check-up so that you can structure and prioritise your resolutions and add meaning to good intentions. Your Link pharmacy owner is also there to talk to, dispensing good health in the community.

YOU CAN PREVENT IT
DO I NEED a fire extinguisher? Yes, provided you know when and how to use it. Fire extinguishers can be a small but important part of the home fire safety plan. They can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or suppressing it until the fire department arrives. Most fires in a home start inside the building due to either negligence or faulty appliances so it doesn’t matter whether you have a thatch roof or a tiled roof - you should have a fire extinguisher regardless. Fire safety experts advise that you attempt to extinguish a fire only if you have first made sure that everyone else has left or is leaving the building, and that someone has called the fire department. Remember, lives are more important than property. If those conditions have been met, you should pick up the fire extinguisher and attack the fire. Be careful to make sure that at all times your back is to a safe exit. You'll also want to make sure that the fire is confined to one area. If it begins to spread to other areas, such as walls and curtains, you should retreat from the room if there is a chance the fire could surround you. You also want to beware of smoke. If the room begins to fill to the point that you can't see or breathe, you should retreat. The prompt use of a home extinguisher can smother a small fire before it spreads, but fire extinguishers can be dangerous in inexperienced hands. Fighting an electrical fire with a waterbased extinguisher, for example, could give you an electric shock, and trying to put out a large or rapidly spreading fire with an extinguisher is useless and could leave you trapped in a burning building. Every time a fire comes within metres of residential properties, homeowners are reminded of the very real danger of a runaway fire to their homes and belongings. Coupled with domestic risks such as faulty wiring or appliances, it’s a good idea for all homeowners to review their building and house content insurance cover to see if they are adequately covered against fire risk. Some insurance companies do require you to have a fire extinguisher in your property and they also need to be serviced annually. This is very important especially if you rent your property out either privately or through a rental agency. So if you decide to buy a fire extinguisher, take the time to learn a bit about its proper use. A tight budget should never prevent you from keeping your family safe so make sure you buy a reliable product from a reputable Fire Safety Company. Bay Fire Safety Solutions has been providing home and business owners in St Francis Bay with fire safety equipment for the past 11 years. Keith Donaldson, the owner, was the head of the volunteer fire department in St Francis Bay for 6 years. His commitment to keeping the residents safe and educated on the risk of fire has always been his number one priority for the village. If you require fire safety equipment for your property or if your current equipment is due it’s annual service, give Keith a call. He also offers training and safety consulting.

FEBRUARY SUGURU PUZZLE SAMPLE PUZZLE Suguru puzzles are quite different than Sudoku - you'll see that the grid is subdivided into containers or cages with heavy lines, each of which is 1 to 5 cells in size. You need to fill each container with unique digits, counting up from 1. So for example a 2-square container contains the numbers 1 and 2. A 5-square container contains the numbers from 1 to 5. Adjacent (touching) cells may never contain the same number, and this includes diagonally adjacent cells. That's it!

WHY JOIN THE SFPO? MEETING NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL ST FRANCIS PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION Over the next couple of issues of Info Ads, we will describe ten excellent reasons to become St Francis Property Owners Association members. See below for the first two. Never in the history of our village have there been more issues that need to be addressed. We need to remain well informed and stand together on a host of issues. If we don't, our town will lose not only its charm but many of the services that are already showing wear. As residents and property owners, we simply have to be in charge of our own destiny. To do this, the SFPO needs the support of the entire community. Our Association currently has a competent executive team of local residents elected by ratepayers every two years. Whether a property owner or a resident renting a property, your support is critical to ensure St Francis Bay is all that it can be. Thus St Francis Bay can offer all who reside in our town the very best lifestyle they deserve. Start participating in our future by joining the SFPO. The subscription is just R500 a year (R330 for pensioners). 1. SERVICE DELIVERY Water, roads, electricity, sewerage management, refuse collection and fire control are probably the most serious service delivery issues. The Association monitors progress and attempts to work with the relevant Municipal bodies to improve service delivery. Lately, we have been assisting the Municipality with the roll-out of their new Wheely-Bins for refuse collection. The Association works in close liaison with our Ward Councillor and is represented on the Ward 12 Committee. 2. LAND USE AND SPATIAL DEVELOPMENT To ensure that our town makes provision for essential amenities like schools, churches, parks and sports facilities, and adheres to logical zoning patterns, a unique plan was drawn. The Association on occasion needs to step in to ensure that inappropriate development does not affect ratepayers' investments.
SEAL POINT LIGHTHOUSE, A BEACON OF HOPE IN UNCERTAIN TIMES Thanks to the 1400 visitors who climbed 154 spiral steps to the top of the majestic Seal Point Lighthouse over the holiday season. Petrel Ventures, which is currently leasing the lighthouse property from Transnet, donated the takings to two children's charities, namely Tharos Children's Home in Hankey and Talhado Children's Haven and Montessori Preschool in Seavista. A very generous amount of R22 905 was donated to each charity. This money could not have come at a more opportune time as the past year has seen a massive drop in fundraising due to the current restrictions placed on events and gatherings. Both recipients were blown away by the amount raised from the lighthouse tours and will ensure that the money is put towards some much needed staff training and classroom materials. Receiving their donations were Taise Sampson from Tharos Children's Home, as well as Chamel Malgas (Talhado Montessori Preschool secretary), Virginia Brown (Talhado Montessori Preschool teacher) and Cathryn Hempel (Principal of Talhado Montessori Preschool). ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS What an exciting start the ECD has had to the new year. The news that the Early childhood grades were allowed to proceed with our school term came as a great relief both to parents, teachers and children. It is wonderful to hear the school bustling with excitement once more after a long Christmas break. The sounds of the farm mixed with the cheers of happy children learning, singing, playing, laughing and giggling, is a breath of fresh air amongst the uncertainty during this pandemic. One of the many wonderful things about our school is that the children are able to explore and learn in an environment which is both open and free. Our surroundings encourage plenty of outdoor learning and exploration. The children are un-phased by the new protocols of sanitising and a more rigorous health regime and are truly happy to be back among their friends and teachers.
