WAKE UP ST FRANCIS BAY AND CAPE ST FRANCIS! A message from the Kouga Local Municipality and the St Francis Disaster Volunteer Group REALITY: WATER RESTRICTORS WILL SOON BE INSTALLED AND IF YOU DON’T REDUCE CONSUMPTION DRASTICALLY, THERE WILL BE WATER RATIONING BY OCTOBER 2021 OR SOONER! This is an urgent appeal to all St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis residents to immediately cut back on water consumption. Your extremely high and continued water use will result in water rationing being implemented which means that water will only be available from taps for a few hours per day and will be shut off for the remainder of the day. Amongst all regions in the Kouga Local Municipality, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis are the highest water users. Kouga Municipality confirmed during last week’s DMC meeting, attended by the Executive Mayor, the Municipal Manager, councillors, senior officials and the DVG, that the current average consumption in our area is as much as 2,5 ML per day and reaches as high as 7,9 ML per day during the December festive period. Consumption levels must be driven down to meet the current supply and ONLY YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! Whilst the recent upswing in property sales and development is welcomed and positive for our economy, it threatens water security even further. It would be disastrous to our local economy if development were to be curbed because there is no water.

DVG

DISASTER VOLUNTEER GROUP ST FRANCIS

AT A RECENT MEETING, THE FOLLOWING POINTS WERE MADE: •The Greater St Francis is currently totally reliant on the Churchill and Impofu dam system for domestic water. The dam levels are at 17.85% and 14.53% respectively; •The Municipality successfully established two boreholes at St Francis Links, with full cooperation; •They are also identifying other potential borehole sites but some areas may not be viable due to the poor quality of water; •To avoid Day Zero, water consumption must reduce as soon as possible to avoid water rationing; •Water rationing will cause damage to the existing reticulation infrastructure, and this could be even more detrimental; •Property owners, residential or business, must take responsibility and are encouraged to procure rainwater harvesting systems, connected to your sewer systems etc; • Bulk water consumers will be expected to formulate and submit water saving mitigation plans to the municipality. • Winter rains are predicted to be below average. It will not alleviate the drought nor water scarcity for the foreseeable future; • It is a reality that Cape St Francis and St Francis Bay will experience dry taps if each person doesn’t immediately reduce consumption. Therefore, no potable water may be used to irrigate nor fill pools, wash cars and the like; • Please investigate leaks at your homes, especially if you don’t live here permanently.

HOUSEHOLDS ARE ONLY PERMITTED 15KL PER MONTH, YET MOST IN CAPE ST FRANCIS AND ST FRANCIS BAY ARE AVERAGING OVER 30KL PER MONTH. THE ONLY IMMEDIATE SOLUTION IS TO REDUCE YOUR CONSUMPTION BY AT LEAST 50%.

HEALTH

CONSCIOUS

MEN, SCREENING AND CHECK-UPS

Many of men’s most common diseases can be treated if detected early enough, making a regular checkup not only sensible but also a responsible action. The average male pays less attention to their health than the average female and is less likely to have a medical check-up. The value of visiting a Link pharmacy extends beyond screenings, doing check-ups and dispensing medication. The pharmacist is also there to offer professional advice on how to prevent diseases through living a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a sensible diet and suggesting preventative medication. RISKS PER AGE GROUP - 20's. A sense of invincibility in this age group can result in check-ups not being a priority. This can lead to seemingly small problems not being detected and treated. Covering some of this age group and extending into the 30-40s, testicular cancer is most common between the ages of 15-35. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can respond well to treatment if detected early. One should always consult with a GP if the following symptoms are experienced: a lump in either testicle; a heavy feeling in the scrotum; a sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum; discomfort or pain in a testicle or scrotum; enlargement of a breast, or back pain. RISKS PER AGE GROUP - 30’s to 40’s Men in this age group should pay special attention to preventative care as habits formed in this life stage can increase the risk of disease in later years. Areas for special attention include: • Cholesterol • High blood pressure • Type 2 diabetes • Heart disease Talk to your pharmacist about preventative medication and how frequently you should be screened. RISKS PER AGE GROUP - 50+ Three areas to keep a keen eye on are: • Colon cancer, which is far more treatable if caught early. • Prostate cancer, where an enlarged prostate can cause discomfort and possibly lead to cancer. • Heart disease, the leading cause of death in men aged 45-54. Poor diet, stress, and a lack of exercise can increase the risk. Individual risk levels should be assessed in order to determine the frequency of screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, and general cardiovascular health. As important as screenings and check-ups is knowing how often you should be checked as it can differ according to age and medical history.

“I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended. Nelson Mandela

JULY SUGURU PUZZLE Suguru puzzles are quite different than Sudoku - you'll see that the grid is subdivided into containers or cages with heavy lines, each of which is 1 to 5 cells in size. You need to fill each container with unique digits, counting up from 1. So for example a 2-square container contains the numbers 1 and 2. A 5-square container contains the numbers from 1 to 5. Adjacent (touching) cells may never contain the same number, and this includes diagonally adjacent cells. That's it!

you DidKNOW ? 7 Facts about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Due to the pandemic, the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo were postponed to 2021. Though the games will now take place from July 23 to August 8, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decreed that the event will still be called Tokyo 2020.

1. Not Tokyo’s first time! - Tokyo, hosting the Olympics for the second time in 2021, impressed the entire whole world when the city hosted the Games in 1964. Among the firsts that year: the Olympics were broadcast via satellite and advanced calculation tools measured competitors’ times in fractions of seconds. 2. Prepare for the robots! - Tech companies in Japan will use the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games as an opportunity to showcase their robot technology! Robots will allegedly be assigned to direct spectators to seats, provide event information, and transport food and other items. 3. Technology to the fullest! - In addition to robots, the Tokyo Olympics will be the first to use a large-scale face recognition system. This system is designed to improve security and speed access to the venue for athletes, officials and press members and other accredited attendees 4. Recycled Medals! - The approximately 5,000 medals planned to be distributed at the Olympics are made from recycled electronic products such as old phones. From more than 78 tons of small electronic devices donated by Japanese citizens, 32 kilograms of gold, 3,500 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze were extracted. 5. Mascots determined! - The Olympic Games mascot is Miraitowa – the name is a combination of the Japanese words for future and infinity. The Paralympic Games mascot is Someity, which is Someiyoshino, a type of cherry blossom common in the country. 6. Carbon emissions reduced to zero for four days! - Tokyo announced a plan to make the city free of carbon dioxide emissions during the opening and closing days of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Energy-saving measures and the use of renewable energy will be employed to reduce CO₂ emissions generated during both the preparation phase and the actual Games. 7. The program has been announced! - The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is planned for July 23. Within the scope of the Games, football and softball events will take place on July 21, two days prior to the opening ceremony. Most of the other events, including swimming and judo, start on July 24. The closing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, August 8, 2021.

ST FRANCIS HOSPICE APPEAL FOR SUPPORT St Francis Hospice provides holistic care and support to terminally ill patients in the Kouga area and surrounds. These patients are in the final stages of illnesses such as cancer, AIDS and motor neuron disease. Many of these people and their loved ones have to cope with their disease whilst living in abject poverty. Hospice's compassionate care is available to all who need it. The cancellation of their biggest fundraisers (the Woodlands golf day event and Last Night Of The Proms) due to the pandemic has left them in a really desperate position, and they are struggling to keep their doors open. It would be a tragedy for the whole region if their doors were to close - the level of care for patients with terminal diseases is shocking in the Eastern Cape! This remarkable institution receives absolutely no support from the Department of Health, amazing considering most of their patients are state patients. How can you help? The Hospice Shop in Humansdorp (next to the Post Office) will gratefully accept all second-hand clothing, home furnishings and household goods which are in reasonable condition but are no longer required. The proceeds from selling these items go towards Hospice running costs. For anyone wishing to make a cash donation, the banking details for St Francis Hospice are as follows :
