Oh to be a lighthouse keeper for a night! by Stephen Pretorius for St Francis Today There's something very special about living close to a lighthouse. A symbol of safety and security, protecting mariners from harm…. a reminder of how precious life is. The beams are like an ever steady heartbeat. They bred life into this place nearly one hundred and fifty years ago. To this day they still flash across the sky, ever consistent …. never missing a beat. It's almost mystical. Sadly for decades the lighthouse precinct here in Cape St Francis has slowly been rotting away. Many of the buildings had been abandoned and fallen into complete disrepair. The area surrounding the iconic tower had been neglected for decades. As one walked passed it looked almost like a miniature ghost town ….. but not for much longer. I'm sure many of you are aware of the hive of activity that's been happening recently in the lighthouse precinct. I had a wander around with Paul who passionately shared his vision. I also met Wesley who's going to be skippering the ship. It seems they are just weeks away from opening and both were super amped! A major draw card for the locals is going to be the restaurant. “Nevermind” stands on the footprint of the old penguin sanctuary. Seeing the pictures of that dilapidated cesspit it was, it is hard believe the transformation. It looks truly amazing. The idea behind the restaurant is that it will offer quality as well as value, primarily serving the greater St Francis community. Most of the produce is going to be sourced locally. Fresh organic greens, free range grass fed beef, locally caught fish and bread baked right there are going to be the order of the day. The design of the restaurant is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Open fire cooking with high tables, sweeping wind protected decks with utterly spectacular views. There's going to be a Barista banging out coffee all day with fresh pastries from the bakery. Inside a wine bar and plentiful informal yet contemporary seating. At first glance it's really impressive.

But wait, there's more …. Adjacent buildings too are being renovated, as accommodation. The crème de la crème of which are the two cottages at the foot of the tower itself. Basically people are going to be able to stay in the same house that all the lighthouse keepers stayed in throughout the years gone by. As I understand, it's the only lighthouse in the country where one will be able to have this experience. On weekends, there will also be opportunity to make a donation towards a local worthy cause and climb the tower itself. Spiralling up numerous flights of stairs then finally scaling a near vertical ladder may lead to a few sweaty palms, but it's worth it. Standing up there on the viewing deck in a busting westerly one can really sense the danger. I felt something unfathomable. It was almost as if the souls of lost mariners were whipping around in the gusts trying to blow me off! And the views - 360 degrees of epic! The lighthouse precinct is indeed a very special place, soon to be entering a different era. People are again going to be welcomed into the fold. The scene has been set. The beam keeps on turning. I for one am looking forward to hanging out there. After a dawnie for a coffee in the sun or an evening meal perhaps. And maybe one day, an overnight stay - just to be a lighthouse keeper for a night.

MEET ANNIE WITBOOI Annie is the person managing our municipal recycling depot. Annie is passionate about keeping the depot in tip top shape. This passion shows in how well kept the whole area is. Just her welcoming and smiling face when you arrive makes you feel special. Annie's family has been here since the beginning. Her uncle Jannie Meintjies worked for Leighton Hulett. Annie still lives in Seavista. What is the best part about your job? "I love all the different people I meet every day. I meet everyone. I also love making sure that this recycling depot is kept clean and organized all the time". What is the worst part of your job? "Comming in on a morning after a weekend and people have vandalized the depot or they have dumped items that is not recycling. I then sort everything out and everything is perfect again". Annie is extremely grateful to be doing a job that she loves. Thank you Annie we appreciate you.

SAVING WATER IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY

WATER SAVING TIPS

Reduce your shower time to 2 minutes. Save the water and use it in your garden

Install a water saving ush device system in your toilet. Only ush when you really need to.

Don’t leave the tap running while brushing your teeth. Turn off the tap between rinsing.

Close taps properly and x leaking pipes and taps. Don’t rinse dishes under running water

Save water from your shower and sink to wash your car. Use a bucket instead of a hosepipe.

Use the shortest wash cycle on your washing machine and make sure you wash a full load.

Parents should educate children about the simple water-saving methods around the home. Employees and co-workers should be made aware of water scarcity issues and the impact of water conservation practices. HEALTH

CONSCIOUS

COVID AND SUBSTANCE USER DISORDERS

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS BROUGHT MAJOR CHALLENGES TO HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS AND PUBLIC HEALTH POLICIES GLOBALLY, AS IT REQUIRES NOVEL TREATMENT AND PREVENTION STRATEGIES TO ADAPT FOR THE IMPACT OF THE PANDEMIC. INDIVIDUALS WITH SUBSTANCE USER DISORDERS (SUD) ARE AT RISK POPULATION FOR CONTAMINATION DUE TO MULTIPLE FACTORS - ATTRIBUTABLE TO THEIR CLINICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL CONDITIONS. People who use drugs and live in group settings or who gather with others are at increased risk of exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19. People with underlying medical conditions, such as substance use disorder, chronic lung disease, chronic liver disease, or serious heart conditions, are more likely to get severely ill from COVID-19. We know that drug use can have serious effects on the body. For example: • The use of opioids can cause slow breathing, and can even result in ineffective breathing, which can lead to decreased oxygen in the blood, brain damage, or death. • The use of stimulants, such as cocaine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine, can cause acute health problems such as stroke, heart attacks, abnormal heart rhythm, and seizures, as well as more chronic conditions, such as heart or lung damage. • The use of drugs by smoking or vaping (for example, heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana) can make chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other lung conditions worse. • Other conditions that affect the immune response, such as HIV, are more common among people who use drugs, especially among those who inject drugs. INCREASED STRESS CAN LEAD TO INCREASES IN ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE USE. IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU CARE ABOUT IS USING ALCOHOL OR OTHER SUBSTANCES, OR IS INCREASING THEIR USE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, HERE ARE A FEW SUGGESTIONS THAT MAY HELP: • Contact your healthcare provider and discuss options for medications to treat disorders • Attend a virtual treatment or recovery programme • Take medicine as prescribed and continue therapy, treatment, or support appointments when possible ADDICTION CARE MUST BE REINFORCED, INSTEAD OF POSTPONED, IN ORDER TO AVOID COMPLICATIONS OF BOTH SUBSTANCE USER DISORDERS AND COVID-19 AND TO PREVENT THE TRANSMISSION OF CORONAVIRUS.

ARE ELECTRIC

BLANKETS A FIRE SAFETY

CONCERN? While there are concerns about the safety of electric blankets, if you have a new electric blanket, there’s only a minimal risk of fires or burns. The same can’t be said for old, damaged, or improperly used electric blankets, which are responsible for the majority of incidents of electric blankets causing fires and burning people. HOW TO AVOID POTENTIAL SAFETY RISKS Follow these steps to reduce risks from a potentially danger: • Don’t buy a secondhand electric blanket. • Avoid blankets that show signs of excessive wear, such as tears, discolourations, scorch marks, frayed electrical cord, or damaged temperature control. • Don’t use an electric blanket that has wires and attachments that don’t fit tightly and properly. • Hold the blanket up to the light. If you see embedded heating wires that are damaged or displaced, don’t use the blanket. HOW TO USE AN ELECTRIC BLANKET SAFELY Even though modern heating blankets are considered generally safe, they should be used correctly. Suggestions for proper use include: • When you’re not using your blanket, turn it off. • Don’t use more than one electric blanket at a time. • Don’t wash or dry-clean an electric blanket. • If your blanket doesn’t have a timer, turn it off before you go to sleep. • Don’t tuck the edges of an electric blanket under the mattress. • Don’t pile pillows, blankets, books, toys, or other items on top of an electric blanket. • Avoid using both a hot water bottle and an electric blanket at the same time. • When storing an electric blanket, gently roll it or hang it up. If you must fold it, fold with as few creases as possible.

____________ Last months answer - ECONOMICALLY

When I was born (1969), the world's population was 3.5 billion. There are now 6.8 billion people on the planet. By 2050, that's expected to rise to 9.4 billion. What's more, the Earth's resources aren't growing; they're decreasing - and rapidly.

JUNE SUGURU PUZZLE Suguru puzzles are quite different than Sudoku - you'll see that the grid is subdivided into containers or cages with heavy lines, each of which is 1 to 5 cells in size. You need to fill each container with unique digits, counting up from 1. So for example a 2-square container contains the numbers 1 and 2. A 5-square container contains the numbers from 1 to 5. Adjacent (touching) cells may never contain the same number, and this includes diagonally adjacent cells. That's it!

SANTAREME AESTHETICS QUESTIONNAIRE We are currently doing a questionnaire with regards to the aesthetics of Santareme. If you are a Santareme resident or homeowner, please fill in the questionnaire and drop it off at our offices at 28 Lyme Road South. Alternatively, email your answers to Lyn at info@sfpo.co.za Alternatively, answer the questions on our website. There is a button on the home page. https://www.stfrancispropertyowners.com St Francis Bay is well known for its themed village of white walls and dark roofs of thatch or other compatible materials that support the theme. Santareme and its environs have always been the village's extension, but with a Mediterranean theme of "earthy colours" and red-tiled roofs. We endeavour to maintain and build on this theme in the Santareme area and wish to obtain property owners' views on whether this should still be supported or made more open and flexible. Your participation by answering our few questions below will help guide the St Francis Property Owners Committee in its deliberations. Name: Erf: Email address: 1. Are you aware that aesthetic building guidelines set parameters for exterior paint colours for Santareme, St Francis on Sea, The Port and Otters Landing? 2. Do you support the idea that there should be controls in this regard applicable to both new houses and the repainting of existing houses? 3. If you do not, can you briefly give your reasons? 4. Do you have any suggestions for future control of colour schemes in the area? 5. Would you be prepared to complete a more detailed questionnaire in this regard? info@sfpo.co.za | 042 294 0594

you DidKNOW ? 10 Unbelievable Facts About the Ocean

1. Our oceans cover more than 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface. With so much of the Earth’s surface taken up by ocean, it’s evident how vital these marine environments are to the planet.

2. The majority of life on Earth is aquatic. As so much of the Earth’s surface is underwater, it comes as no surprise that marine species outnumber those on land - an incredible 94% of the earth’s living species exist within the oceans. 3. Less than five per cent of the planet’s oceans have been explored. As researchers strive to discover more, we’re continually getting to know our oceans better. 4. The world’s longest mountain chain is underwater. The Mid-Ocean Ridge, is almost entirely beneath the ocean, stretching across a distance of 65,000 kilometres. 5. There are more historic artefacts under the sea than in all of the world’s museums. Underwater museums have been created in recent years, including the Mediterranean’s submerged bronze statue, Christ of the Abyss. 6. We still only know a fraction of the marine species in our oceans. According to the World Register of Marine Species there are now 240,470 accepted species, but this is believed to be just a small proportion of the species that exist, with new marine life being discovered everyday.. 7. Over 70% of our planet’s oxygen is produced by the ocean. It’s thought that between 70 and 80% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by marine plants, nearly all of which are marine algae. 8. It’s possible to find rivers and lakes beneath the ocean. When salt water and hydrogen sulfide combine, it becomes denser than the rest of the water around it, enabling it to form a lake or river that flows beneath the sea. 9. Coral produces its own sunscreen. Too much sunlight can damage the algae that live inside coral in shallow water. To protect the algae, which are a main source of sustenance for the coral, the corals fluoresce. This creates proteins that act as a sort of sunscreen for the algae. 10. The Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest ocean and contains around 25,000 islands. With 25,000 islands lying within it, the Pacific Ocean has more islands than anywhere else on the planet.
