What is National Day of Unplugging? March 5-6, 2021
National Day of Unplugging is an awareness campaign that promotes a 24-hour respite from technology annually observed the first weekend in March.
How Can A Break From Digital Devices Enhance Your Mental Wellbeing?
If you’re thinking about taking part in the National Day of Unplugging from March 5 to 6 (sunrise to sundown) 2021, then you may be fascinated to know how much your mental health and wellbeing can benefit from this simple act. A recent Forbes article revealed that the average adult spends as many as 12 hours per day in front of a screen - a fact which affects our level of activity, the extent to which we socialize with others in person, and the amount of time we spend in nature.
Battling Nature-Deficit Disorder
‘Nature-deficit disorder’ is the new term for spending less time outdoors. This is characterized by a reduced ability to focus, live in the moment, and appreciate the great beauty of nature. Spending as little as 10 minutes in a green or nature-filled setting reduced the effects of physical and mental stress. Another study shows that nature reduces depression and boosts self-esteem. Think of time spent away from your gadgets and in an outdoor setting as a quick way to recalibrate your brain and encourage you to take part in more physical activity - which in itself is an excellent stress buster.
Time To Be
A plethora of studies have shown that holistic activities such as yoga, mindfulness meditation, and Tai Chi have a powerful ability to improve mood and vitality, increase happiness, and battle depression, anxiety and stress. Battling stress involves proactive, daily steps such as taking a few minutes of each morning to meditate or perform a few yoga postures.
A Sense Of Connection
Meeting friends and family in person builds vital memories and connections, enhancing one’s sense of support and belonging. The more social ties people have from an early age, they found, the better their health is at the beginning and end of their lives. The best thing about unplugging is that it prompts people to find new ways to fill in free time. On the day you do disconnect from it all, ensure you make important social connections with the people you love. Take the time to enjoy sports or exercise outside, take a stroll down the Wildside with your family and friends or have a picnic on the beach - we’re fortunate to be spoiled with outdoor choices!

Hello Autumn!
1 George Road St Francis Bay 082 649 1678 073 196 6129
Life in St Francis in the 60's & 70's by Sandra Hardie - Part 2 There were often visiting round the world yachts which Leighton would skilfully escort through the river mouth which would find resting place in this harbour. Once a huge Trimaran visited. Liewe Heksie (that was what our children called her) was the Harbour Mistress and our children were terrified of her. She had seventeen cats! My parents Laurie and Noreen Aitken had chosen to retire here. Noreen was instrumental in starting the first tennis club and Laurie the golf course. In any one day we would play tennis, water-ski, fish, walk endless miles, spend hours exploring the middens of what is today Santareme and the Port area and which was then pristine dunefield. We would find potshard, bushman beads and other artefacts. We would sail Hobies for hours, in perfect conditions, turkey rolls for sustenance in between sometimes scary moments going back out to sea. There was great camaraderie between the sailors and an annual party took place. The dunes on the seaside of the current Anne Avenue parking area were very high. This was where the boats were pulled up and it was a long haul to and from the water. On New Years Eve two huge bonfires would be lit on either side of the Kromme in the river mouth. There was great competition as to which side could build the biggest bonfire and everyone contributed. It was spectacular when the fires were lit on the dot of midnight. There would undoubtedly have been dire consequences in the developed St Francis of today. This activity was eventually banned. Every Boxing Day there would be an offshore race invariably won by Duncan Lethbridge and every New Years Day there would be a race in the river which was then very wide, there being no dam higher up. Carl Weselink was the last official winner of this race sailing a Laser The river would flood regularly in the winter months, scouring out the river mouth and sending sand to the beach. The prevailing west wind blew sand into the bay from the bare dunes of what would become Santareme, which again nourished the spectacular beach. When the Kromme River was in flood it was impossible to cross the ford so one was grounded on whatever side. Palaeontologist Prof Johann Binneman from the Albany Museum would conduct digs in the midden areas - it was fascinating to learn more about the nomadic Strandlopers.
Every Saturday night Leighton would have a film show against the tennis court wall. We would take a picnic and blankets and lie in the grass, invariably becoming covered in ticks! Often the film would break or projector shut down but it was all part of the fun. We would go to Huisklip and spend the night on its magnificent, deserted beach, cooking bacon and eggs in the morning. Once we lost my precious Jack Russell Button when she pursued a Dassie down its tunnel on the actual Huisklip. It took three hours to retrieve her. We would visit the Charleywoods at Rebels Rus in their perfectly sited home built entirely of flotsam and jetsam. That house was sadly burned to the ground in one of the big fires. This was an historic site the story being that a Boer holed himself up there during the Boer War and shot at any intruder. We would walk the Sand River from Oyster Bay to St Francis, sleeping on the dunes and watch a rising sun silhouetting Blue Cranes. The Sand River was extremely wide and without vegetation. There were always huge pans of fresh, clean water in which we and our dogs would swim. We drank crystal water spouting out of the side of dunes. Watching all these Super 8 Cines is a reminder of how children were provided for and not indulged. All activities were shared en famille. Life was simple and we revelled in the sheer unspoiled beauty of our surroundings How sad it is that there is now competition to build a bigger, more opulent house than the person next door. Seemingly today children have no appreciation of the fragility of the Sand River and desecrate it with their scramblers, tear down signage and must be seen to have all the toys. That there are few parameters and the essentials like caring for our precious environment are just not there. We are so grateful for the special memories that our Super 8 Cines have renewed. Headaches: Three tips from a neuroscientist on how to get rid of them
Everyone experiences headaches. From dull throbbing dehydration headaches to incapacitating migraines, a sore head is an extremely common complaint. When headaches strike, many people’s reaction is to reach for a painkiller. And these can do the job. But a better solution is often to probe the reasons behind the pain – especially if you get similar types of headaches a lot. Even though they all entail pain, where the pain is can clue us into what type of headache we are experiencing. Pain in the face and forehead are markers of sinus-related headache whilst the sensation of a pneumatic drill somewhere in our cranium is often migraine. 1. Think beyond your head This means thinking beyond your head - the cause of our headache can sometimes come from our body or our behaviour. Frequent migraine sufferers intimately understand this and often religiously track their food intake and their activities. Taking too many things on, rushing around trying to get things done in negative time, and trying to be all things to all people are common behavioural markers that will predict a tension headache. 2. Listen to the pain Taking paracetamol or ibuprofen will act to avert the danger, reducing the inflammation, the dilation and the perception of pain, but the headache will reoccur unless we can address the cause. We may decide a bottle of wine and a takeaway is a treat we need to relax and de-stress. But both lead to dehydration, another ubiquitous cause of headache. The brain loses water such that it literally shrinks in volume, tugging on the membranes covering the brain and triggering pain.. 3. Use the brain’s natural painkillers So what else can we do? One way is to lean into the brain’s natural painkiller system and to boost neurochemicals associated with happiness (such as serotonin and oxytocin) and reward (dopamine). The knowledge that we can leverage our behaviour and our body to keep our brain’s neurochemicals in balance gives us a way to break the headache cycle. So next time you have a headache for which the causes aren’t glaringly obvious – you’re not otherwise sick and you’ve been keeping hydrated – take a look at your life and see what you can change there. The pain, after all, is trying to tell you something

MARCH SUGURU PUZZLE SAMPLE PUZZLE Suguru puzzles are quite different than Sudoku - you'll see that the grid is subdivided into containers or cages with heavy lines, each of which is 1 to 5 cells in size. You need to fill each container with unique digits, counting up from 1. So for example a 2-square container contains the numbers 1 and 2. A 5-square container contains the numbers from 1 to 5. Adjacent (touching) cells may never contain the same number, and this includes diagonally adjacent cells. That's it!

WHY JOIN THE SFPO? MEETING NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL ST FRANCIS PROPERTY OWNERS ASSOCIATION Over the next couple of issues of Info Ads, we will describe ten excellent reasons to become St Francis Property Owners Association members. Below are reasons 3 to 6 Never in the history of our village have there been more issues that need to be addressed. Unless we remain well informed and can stand together, our town will lose not only its charm but many of the services that are already showing wear. As residents and property owners, we simply have to be in charge of our own destiny. To do this, the SFPO needs the support of the entire community. Our Association currently has a competent executive team of local residents elected by ratepayers every two years. Whether a property owner or a resident renting property, your support is critical to ensure St Francis Bay is all that it can be. Start participating in our future by joining the SFPO. The subscription is R500 a year (R330 for pensioners). 3. Aesthetics and Planning The look and feel of St Francis Bay is unique. The Association is represented on the Aesthetics committee. It works closely with the Planning Department of the Municipality to maintain our town's exceptional appearance and adherence to by-laws. 4. Community Policing The Association works hand in hand with CCTV monitoring service, the local police, neighbourhood watch, and local security companies to curb crime within our community. 5. Beach, Spit and Groyne Project The Association has members involved in the process. Our aim is to keep the community informed concerning the progress of the project. 6. Riparian and Kromme River Matters Our Association works hand in hand with the Riparian Home Owners Association and the Kromme Joint River Committee. This work is done to protect these homeowners' interests and manage our canal and river systems.
ST FRANCIS COLLEGE NEWS NEWS FROM FOUNDATION PHASE AT ST FRANCIS COLLEGE During the short busy time that we have been back at school, the Foundation Phase children have enjoyed many academic challenges and have found solace in fun activities which have balanced the school week positively. Masks and sanitizing/washing of hands is a common place activity and has become an integral part of life at school. The Grade 1's 'dressed' gingerbread men on their first day at school and the fun has not stopped. The Grade 2's can be seen carrying out an art activity and some Grade 6's thoroughly enjoying activities during our 'School fun day' which marks the start of our half term break. The Grade 3's each have their own 'owl' which they have to look after. This is motivation and reward for good work and behaviour. Our campus is conducive to learning and with greenery and farm animals all around us, the children embrace a fulfilling all-encompassing experience, which they will carry with them always. We love our school and our happy children bear testament to this fact.
