XAVERIAN GENEROSITY: A community that bands together. When people talk about StFX, community is a word you hear often. At our core, we’ve always been much more than a place of higher learning. We are also a place where friendships are found, bonds cemented, and where community is formed. Communities pull together to support one another, and StFX is no different. In these pages you’ll read about a number of exceptional StFX students who are achieving remarkable things, as well as the supporters whose generosity is helping make their experiences possible. We hope you enjoy this celebration of the students, faculty and supporters who are responding to the call to make StFX an ever better place to learn, live and grow.
StFX is university, as it is meant to be.

HELPING EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS ACHIEVE EXCEPTIONAL THINGS A message from Dr. Kent MacDonald, President and Vice-Chancellor of St. Francis Xavier University Four years ago, in August 2014, I began my tenure as St. Francis Xavier University’s 18th President and Vice-Chancellor. In the time that’s followed, my wife Mary-Ellen and I have had the honour of getting to know many of our students, learning about their hopes for the future and why they chose StFX to help bring these aspirations to life. I often say that to understand why StFX is one of Canada’s finest universities, we need look no further than our exceptional students. They make me proud every day. But sometimes during these same conversations, I hear about the significant barriers many of our students face when deciding to attend StFX – one of Canada’s last truly residential universities. The cost of post-secondary education continues to rise. Indeed, in many ways it’s never been more expensive to be a student. This reality hits home when I hear about students who must scrimp and save to fulfill their dream of attending StFX, only to realize they don’t have the resources to pay for the next few years of their degree. It is heartbreaking when I hear they make the difficult decision to put their studies on hold while trying to save money. Sadly, many don’t return to StFX and must settle for a very different experience at a large university closer to their home. I recall chatting with Mary-Ellen about this challenge. We have both benefited from our StFX undergraduate and graduate degrees, and knew that something must be done. Out of that conversation came the Xaverian Fund and a goal to raise $50 million for student scholarships and bursaries, transforming access to education for generations of Xaverians yet to come. The premise behind the fund is simple: no academically-focused, socially-engaged student should miss out on a StFX education because of their financial situation.
Incredibly, since launching the Xaverian Fund in 2015 we’ve raised over $35 million. We are changing lives. No doubt, this is a substantial achievement - but there’s more to do to reach the full goal. Beyond the Xaverian Fund, there is also more required to fulfill the needs of our academic programs and the support services our students depend on. In other words, now more than ever StFX needs your financial support. Often, when we talk about donations and funds raised, it can be easy to lose sight of the meaning behind the figures. What’s most important is the impact of these financial contributions. The stories you’ll read in the following pages are the stories of these people. These are the stories of people whose lives are being changed because of our supporters’ generosity, and the stories of a few exceptional supporters who continue to inspire us with their commitment to StFX. My personal hope is that when you read about our students and learn more about their lives, you remember that they are why we ask you to give back to St. Francis Xavier University; that their stories of success are directly shaped by your generosity. So how much can you give? Please know that we can all make an impact, and that no amount is too small to help. With your assistance, we will ensure many more StFX students have stories of achievement for generations to come. Hail and Health!

A CALL TO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS OF TOMORROW A message from Mr. Murray Kyte, St. Francis Xavier University Vice-President, Advancement As I reflect on my own time as a StFX student, I realize that for every experience we enjoyed, there were people behind the scenes making it all possible. The programs we studied, the buildings we lived in and the stadium where we celebrated were the result of much dreaming and many years of planning. They were also the result of StFX alumni and friends who gave generously to make them happen. We never thought much about these gifts and these spaces as students, but now recognize they are the legacy of those who came before us. As alumni of StFX, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to do this same thing for the students of today and tomorrow. At a time when universities like StFX face a challenging financial future, it’s on us to step forward. Like the alumni and friends who did the same for us, we need to make sure future Xaverians benefit from opportunities into the future even better than the ones we enjoyed. Like all universities in our region, StFX faces significant funding challenges. Operating costs continue to rise at a faster pace than the combined revenue we receive from government and from tuition fees. All indications tell us this will continue. This means that much of our day-to-day operations and many of the programs that make StFX outstanding now depend on funds raised from people like you and I. Over the past 10 years, the number of alumni who give to StFX has dropped to unsustainably low levels (see our graph on page 32.) That’s why in 2017 we challenged every StFX graduate to adopt the mentality of “every alumni, any amount, every year” for financial giving. Last year approximately 8.4 per cent of all alumni made a financial gift to StFX, a slight increase from 2016. While any increase is positive, this number is still nowhere near

where StFX needs it to be. The reality is straightforward: without more financial support from StFX alumni and friends, many of the programs and initiatives that our students depend on will not exist into the future. Often, our alumni tell us it’s hard to make sense of this reality when they hear about StFX receiving large, multi-million dollar gifts for new academic spaces. They ask why we can’t simply allocate some of these contributions to other areas. However, when our generous benefactors make such gifts they often designate them for specific projects, like these spaces for world-class teaching and research – spaces that are crucial for our ability to shape future community, business and political leaders. When it comes to building a competitive yet sustainable future for StFX, it can’t be a choice between investing in new academic spaces for our students or our day-to-day funding needs. It must be both. This is why major transformational gifts and regular, modest alumni giving are both equally important. They allow us to plan for a bright future while establishing a sustainable base from which to grow. Your support – of any amount, towards any initiative – is crucial to our success. In the pages that follow you’ll read stories of students and programs that depend on your generosity. You’ll also find contact information for members of the StFX Development team should you wish to make a contribution. Thank you for your support. Hail and Health!

OPENING A NEW DOOR Paul and Sara McFarland Bursary helps American students find themselves at StFX Being a university student comes with its share of challenges. It’s the first time living away from home for many students, and the adjustment is compounded by new routines, new friends, and changing support systems. Many students face anxiety about how they’ll adapt, not to mention how they’ll pay the full cost of a university education. It’s even tougher when your new home is in a new country. International students at StFX face challenges beyond what most Canadian students will experience. There are study permits and visas required before arriving, new cultures and climates, as well as expenses and fees on top of regular tuition and living costs. But thanks to generous StFX supporters like Paul and Sara McFarland, help is often available. The McFarlands, from Washington, D.C., established a bursary fund to help American students achieve their goal of earning a StFX education. The McFarland Bursary is awarded to as many as three students from the United States every single year. “I enjoyed my time here immensely,” said Paul, originally from Portland, Maine, and a graduate from the Class of 1965. “I never once had a single regret about coming to StFX, and the school still means a lot to me.” After graduating from StFX, Paul went on to serve a 28-year career in the American military before moving to the private sector, and eventually retiring. Despite the time that’s passed since attending StFX, he still makes the school a priority, which he says is largely because of its strong academic focus. “I’ve always felt the university’s focus was strong,” said Mr. McFarland. “StFX has high standards for its students, and its graduates are quality people. I knew that giving here meant our money would be used wisely.
“And it’s lovely to meet some of the students who are able to put the funds to good use,” he said. One of the students making good use of the McFarland Bursary is Paul Hurford, a third-year Bachelor of Science student from Grantham, New Hampshire. “Growing up in a larger family that worked full-time made me realize how difficult it would be to pay for school,” said Mr. Hurford. “Having bursaries to bridge these gaps is super helpful.” Paul says his experience so far at StFX has opened doors to opportunities he never imagined, which is encouraging him to step beyond his comfort zone to embrace new challenges. His passion for photography resulted in opportunities through StFX’s XVT (X Video Team), a group of student photographers and videographers called upon by the university to capture memories of special events happening on campus. He’s also worked as a community advisor in one of StFX’s residences, developing valuable leadership experience. Paul’s also formed friendships with other international students, leading him to consider an international exchange to Asia. “I’m a lot more involved with life at StFX than I thought I would be,” says Paul. “And before coming here, I don’t think I ever would have considered something like a study exchange. “StFX has opened a new door.” For their part, Paul and Sara McFarland are simply happy to know their support has a tangible impact on the lives of students like Paul Hurford, who make the life-changing decision to come to Canada and study at StFX. “We’re glad to able to help, that’s for sure,” says Mr. McFarland. “We’re happy to make a difference.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE, RIGHT NOW StFX students help fund multi-million dollar campus health and wellness revitalization project Sam Gan ’18 and Kelsie Fahie ’18 walk through StFX’s Oland Centre, knowing the facility will soon look very different from how they knew it as students. And although they’re too humble to admit it, their leadership – and the support of the StFX student body – is a big reason why. In January 2018, StFX students voted to support the Oland Centre revitalization project, which will completely overhaul the main health and wellness facility not just for StFX, but communities across northeastern Nova Scotia. The multi-year renovation project will cost $30 million, with StFX students contributing $5 million over 10 years via an annual student levy. Both Sam and Kelsie were part of a student leadership group that took an active role advocating for fellow students to vote in support of the project. “The Oland Centre is functional, but it’s kind of the bare minimum,” says Sam, from London, Ontario, who graduated this spring with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship. “With more space and newer facilities, you could do so much more.” More space and newer facilities is exactly what they’ll get. The revitalization project includes new public change rooms including family and gender-neutral spaces, an expanded public fitness centre three times bigger than the current facility, a double-sized auxiliary gym for more recreation opportunities, renovated locker rooms for StFX varsity athletic teams, and multi-use spaces for both academic and community needs. The revitalization will proceed in a phased approach, with various elements completed over the coming years. The project also includes the renovation of the main gymnasium, which took place in 2017 and was re-named Coach K Court after long-time StFX basketball coach Steve Konchalski. New stadium grandstands overlooking the Oland Centre field were installed in 2018. In an era marked by rising costs and expenses, the fact that so many StFX students were willing to support the project is remarkable – especially considering that many will graduate before renovations are complete. Yet, the tradition of StFX students and alumni stepping up to support
future Xaverians resonated with the student body. “Students today have benefitted so much from donations and gifts that previous students made,” said Kelsie, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Human Kinetics this spring. “If we can leave a legacy for future students, just as other generations did for us, we think it’s ideal. “We want to be proud of our alma mater and give something back,” she said, while also noting that StFX’s Charles V. Keating Centre was funded by previous students through a similar levy. “I’m a first-generation StFX student,” added Sam. “As a person who’s been profoundly touched by my time here, if more of my family comes to StFX in the future I want them to enjoy facilities even greater than what I had.” The Nova Scotia government contributed $1.5 million towards the total $30 million project cost. The rest will be raised entirely through private contributions, including the $5 million student gift, $2.5 million raised by alumni and supporters of StFX varsity programs, and a transformational $10 million gift by Amelia and Lino Saputo Jr., Chief Executive Officer of the global dairy company Saputo, Inc. The Saputo family contribution, which was announced in April 2018, is the single largest gift to StFX in the university’s 165-year history. The Saputos, whose son Gio graduated from StFX in 2018, said they knew there was something special about StFX and Antigonish the first time they arrived on campus, and wanted to make an impact that would benefit both the university itself and the wider community. In their honour, the revitalized facility will be renamed the Amelia and Lino Saputo Centre for Healthy Living. Although students like Sam and Kelsie won’t be on campus to enjoy the finished product, they take pride knowing that their fellow students helped drive an initiative that’s bigger than themselves. They also hope their forward-thinking attitude resonates with the wider StFX family. “I think this project shows the strength of a young, thriving StFX community,” said Kelsie. “We’re students, but we’re also people who aren’t willing to wait until graduation to make a difference. We’re making a difference right now.”

SOMETHING SPECIAL
Alumnus reflects on a lifetime of StFX support
In the fall of 1940, Dr. Emerson Dunphy ’43 ’47 arrived in Antigonish to attend StFX after spending a long year working aboard a ship, transporting goods between the Atlantic coast and Montreal. His arrival was the culmination of a long-time goal. “I loved StFX even before I came here,” recalls Emerson. “This place was like heaven to so many people.” Born in Ingonish and raised in North Sydney, Emerson explained that growing up in Cape Breton during the late 1930s and early 1940s, there was never a question about where you’d go to university. “It was always StFX. I probably had more options about where I wanted to go for high school!” The allure of Antigonish was strong, and when Emerson arrived on campus he had high expectations for an unforgettable experience. StFX didn’t disappoint. “The intimacy and smallness of campus made it great. It was a very real sense of community, and the professors were outstanding. They were characters all the way through, and they gave us such a good start in life.” Emerson also has the honour of owning what may be the very first X-Ring produced with the now world-famous X symbol. The design was created in 1942, when Emerson was still a student. “I was secretary of the Students’ Union, and it was my job to distribute the rings to all who were getting one,” he explained. “Of course, I kept the very first one for myself!”
Emerson graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1943, before embarking on a two-year tour of duty with the Royal Canadian Air Force towards the end of the Second World War. He then returned to StFX where he earned a Bachelor of Science before attending medical school at McGill University in Montreal. Emerson moved back to Antigonish in 1956, where he had a long career as a surgeon. He’s been here ever since, in a home that’s just a short distance away from the university that he loves so much. Although it’s been 75 years since Emerson first graduated from StFX, he remains an ‘X’ champion through and through. He’s also a consistent financial supporter, giving to a variety of causes across the university including StFX athletic programs and the Coady International Institute. He says he gives to ensure that both current and future students leave StFX with memories similar to his own. Emerson’s example demonstrates that alumni who give to StFX – no matter how much time has passed since they graduated university – are making a real impact on the lives of students. Because of their generosity, StFX can continue providing exceptional, unforgettable learning experiences for today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders. They can also provide financial support for students who otherwise may not be able to afford a StFX education. “StFX was something special,” reflects Emerson. “And it really hasn’t lost that, even as it’s grown. That something special is still there.”

EMPOWERED LEADERS, TRANSFORMED COMMUNITIES Scholarships help Indigenous Women in Community Leadership participants fulfill their leadership potential Nadine Bernard is a woman with a mission: to help people become healthier, happier and more in touch with themselves – one meal at a time. Nadine is founder of Slow Cooked Dreams, which she describes as an “educational empowerment program” that uses food preparation as a tool to help people develop life skills. Over a series of five two-hour workshops, Nadine walks participants through the basics of meal preparation before leading discussions on topics like emotional and spiritual well-bring, physically active lifestyles, and practical skills such as budget planning. “Food is a really great, inclusive tool,” explains Nadine, who is originally from the Eskasoni First Nation but now lives in Sydney. “It’s a launching point for so many memories and experiences, and through my workshops I try to harness that. Ultimately I want to empower people and give them confidence to lead happy and healthy lives.” It’s a vision that Nadine had for many years, brought to life with help from the Coady International Institute at St. Francis Xavier University. Nadine is a 2017 graduate of the Coady International Institute’s Indigenous Women in Community Leadership (IWCL) Program, an initiative that brings together women from Indigenous communities across Canada for weeks of skills-building and leadership development. Participants take part in a number of intensive workshops on diverse topics like business planning, social media, and sustainable community development before using these skills to implement their own community-based projects. Over 100 Indigenous women have graduated from the program since its creation in 2011. The program is also shaped by Indigenous communities themselves, incorporating cultural practices and traditional Indigenous ways of being and knowing. For instance, participants regularly meet with Indigenous elders from local communities and participate in smudging ceremonies and talking circles, which Nadine says is crucial in building a program that’s both informative and culturally relevant. “It is so important for an Indigenous person to centre with themselves and to know they’re in a space where they can be proud to be Indigenous, says Nadine. “It felt good to be in a
room with women who had the same dreams and faced the same barriers as myself, and to know that we were entering into a space where we could all feel equal.” Participants in the Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program come to the StFX campus for an intensive three-week residency before returning home, where they implement their local development project and continue to work with program mentors. But while the program attracts women from across Canada, participants still face financial barriers in leaving their careers and families for even a few short weeks. Recognizing this hardship, corporate organizations – like the Imperial Oil Foundation – and many private donors created scholarships that cover the full cost of tuition and fees for all participants. Elmer and Pauline King are two donors who were so moved by their own experiences with the Coady International Institute that they felt compelled to give back. Elmer was a StFX student in 1959 – the same year the Coady International Institute was established – and recalls meeting some of the institute’s first participants. “I was just a little guy from Cape Breton, and suddenly I was meeting people studying at the Coady from across the globe,” he said. “It was so impressive, knowing what they learned here would allow them to help their own people.” Pauline credits an event hosted by the Coady International Institute that included Indigenous speakers as the reason why she and her husband support the IWCL program in particular. “I was so impressed watching these women, these leaders, talk about their life stories,” she recalls. “It confirmed for me how important these programs are. They empower women to better themselves and to be confident that they can reach out and help other people, too.” Feeling empowered to empower others is exactly what Nadine Bernard has taken from her experience at the Coady International Institute. What started as a simple vision has turned into a full-time focus, as Nadine is now receiving inquiries to run her workshops with community groups, family centres and even prisons across the province. “Indigenous women are reclaiming our identity to help our own communities,” she says.

OUR StFX: CHANGING LIVES, TOGETHER StFX joins the global Giving Tuesday movement in support of student financial aid It was a day that raised much excitement, plenty of Xaverian spirit, and many funds to support StFX students! On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, St. Francis Xavier University participated in the global Giving Tuesday movement and held a one-day fundraising blitz for student financial aid programs. Over a 24-hour period, the StFX community raised an astounding $135,066.30 from a total of 344 gifts, far outpacing the fundraising goal for the day. All funds raised are directly supporting StFX students through key financial aid programs. These include needbased bursaries and in-course scholarships, the StFX Student Food Resource Centre, which provides food to students who may otherwise have to go without, and the Student Parent Holiday Fund, providing student parents with resources to buy gifts and supplies for their family during the holiday season. “Every year we hear from students who are struggling to cover costs, whether tuition and fees or even basic living expenses,” says Mary Fisher-MacDonnell, Financial Aid Officer at StFX. “The support for StFX’s Giving Day meant that even more funds are now available for the students who need them. “Sometimes, these programs make the difference between a student finishing their degree or dropping out of university because of financial strain.”
Much of the over $135,000 raised was comprised of modest-sized gifts in denominations like $10 or $20, demonstrating that smaller amounts can add up to make a monumental impact. A number of supporters also provided large gifts of up to $10,000, which were used to match contributions from first-time donors and young alumni. This meant that many who gave saw the value of their gift doubled. While the StFX Giving Day was a huge success, no single campaign could ever address all student financial needs. Which is why we’re doing it again! On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, mark your calendars for Our StFX: Changing Lives, Together. This campaign will pick up from last year’s accomplishment and attempt to raise even more funds for student financial aid programs. Our StFX: Changing Lives, Together recognizes that when the global StFX community unifies around a common goal, there is nothing we can’t accomplish and no life we can’t change! On November 27, if you have $10 or $20 to spare, please make a contribution towards StFX student financial aid programs. Simply, your gift will directly support a StFX student in a tangible, impactful way. Stay tuned to StFX social media accounts and visit www.StFX.ca/OurStFX throughout the fall to learn more. With your support, together we will change lives!

This way, I know my gift is being used for priority projects at the discretion of the university. This ensures some areas that might otherwise get overlooked receive appropriate support.
RACHEL PINK, SENIOR DEVELOPMENT OFFICER rpink@stfx.ca • 902.580.2768 The cost of a university education is a barrier to so many students. I supported StFX’s Giving Day because I believe no student should miss a university education because of financial need. StFX’s Giving Day helped support scholarships and bursaries, which makes it easier for students to cover the cost of their education.
LYNN O’DONNELL ’13, DEVELOPMENT OFFICER lodonnel@stfx.ca • 902.867.5017 Why do I support the StFX Giving Day, dedicated to student financial aid programs? I am a committed proponent of creating access to education. Financial aid programs provide vital support that can make the difference between a student leaving university and finishing their degree. Education is the foundation upon which we build our future.
