PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | DR. KENT MACDONALD ’86 ’93

STEADFAST IN OUR FOCUS ON ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND GENEROSITY TO OTHERS In October, a group of Xaverians and I gathered in Toronto to watch Anna Ludlow ’05 play the fiddle in the musical, Come From Away. It is the story of the generosity of the residents of Gander, Newfoundland, amidst the horror of September 11. It was fitting, then, that we met prior to the show with Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman ’13, where they announced their extraordinarily generous gift of $5.3 million to the Schwartz School of Business. This fund will be dispersed in bursaries and scholarships over the next four years, allowing deserving and capable students to attend StFX. Lighting the way for these future Xaverians is Liam Elbourne ’19, currently in his last year of a joint BBA in business and economics. Liam, a native Haligonian and captain of the men’s soccer team, was just selected as our region’s 2019 Rhodes Scholar – an incomparable academic achievement that will allow him to pursue graduate study at Oxford University. He joins a highly distinguished group of StFX Rhodes Scholars, including my predecessor, Dr. Sean Riley ’74. It is no secret that I have a passion for sports – and this season only served to

stoke those fires even further. Our men’s rugby team was crowned Nova Scotia champion, and our football, rowing, and men’s cross-country teams earned Atlantic titles. And, it is hard to explain how exciting it was to be among fellow Xaverians on the sidelines, as our women’s rugby team thundered their way to a sixth national title. In our 166 years of existence, StFX has had only 10 chancellors. Susan Crocker, the first female and the first lay Chancellor, concluded her term in 2018, and we are thrilled to welcome John Peacock ’63 as our 10th Chancellor. He gave an inspiring address in the Chapel on a bright September morning, reminding us all of our commitment to selflessness and service. That commitment is unwavering – though this semester has been a particularly challenging one in many ways. However, we remain steadfast in our focus on academic excellence and generosity to others. I never falter in my awe of the students on this campus, who continually amaze and delight me. I would like to thank all StFX alumni, friends, and supporters who support the university. These are not easy days for small universities – and even tougher

times for many of our students. It remains my personal, primary goal to grow the endowment, so that a StFX education is within reach for all students. Your kindness is unparalleled, and I am thankful. Finally, I would like to welcome Shanna Hopkins ’01 to the important role of Director, Alumni Affairs. Shanna is a talented and experienced Xaverian who will do a wonderful job filling the large shoes of our friend and colleague, Mary Jessie MacLellan ’87 ’18, who has taken on new responsibilities related to student recruitment. Hail and Health.

He has since gone on to an inspired career, with over 40 years accounting and senior business leadership experience. He is the retired executive vicepresident of Fednav Limited, a Canadian ocean-going, dry-bulk ship-owning and chartering group. “The Chancellor is a distinguished person with a record of demonstrated excellence in his/her chosen field and in community service; an individual whose reputation and experience exemplifies StFX values. It is a role made for Mr. Peacock. He is a StFX champion through and through,”

StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 officiated over the ceremony, investing Mr. Peacock with the robes of office. Liam Elbourne

RESEARCH BY StFX STUDENT GARNERS INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION Liam Elbourne, a StFX Schwartz School of Business student from Halifax, NS, taking joint honours in business and economics, has garnered international attention for his research. In June, he presented his paper “Shocks to Military Support and Subsequent Assassinations in Ancient Rome,” coauthored with former StFX economics professor Cornelius Christian, at the 52nd annual conference of the Canadian Economics Association in Montreal. He was the only active undergraduate student to present in a regular session at the conference, which featured almost 1,000 presenters. The paper was since published in Economics Letters, a highly-respected international journal that has published the work of many past Nobel Prize recipients. Full-length stories about the research appeared in some of the world’s leading outlets, including The Smithsonian magazine, The Economist, and The Telegraph. Mr. Elbourne credits guidance from Dr. Christian and the StFX Economics Department for much of his success. Mr. Elbourne, also captain of the X-Men soccer team, will graduate in May. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in economics. At press time, StFX was thrilled to learn that Mr. Elbourne has been announced as the university’s newest Rhodes Scholar, an award widely considered one of the world’s most prestigious. MASTER OF PERSUASION: BRIAN MULRONEY’S GLOBAL LEGACY – DR. FEN OSLER HAMPSON’S BOOK LAUNCHED AT StFX From pivotal moments in global politics to his time as a StFX student, members of the StFX and Antigonish communities had a tremendous opportunity to glimpse into the life and legacy of the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney ’59, Canada’s 18th prime minister, who was on campus Oct. 25, 2018 as a special guest at the launch of Dr. Fen Osler Hampson’s book, Master of Persuasion: Brian Mulroney’s Global Legacy. The book by Dr. Hampson, Chancellor’s Professor at Carleton University and Distinguished Fellow and Director of the Global Security and Politics Program at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, is based on unprecedented access—interviews with key players, diaries, memos, etc.—and is the first book to document Mr. Mulroney’s foreign policy record, from NAFTA to the collapse of the Soviet Union, climate change to the release of Nelson Mandela. Dr. Hampson holds a PhD from Harvard University and is also a graduate of the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Toronto. During a fireside chat, Mr. Mulroney answered questions, taking the audience back to key moments during his time as prime minister as well as into modern day issues.

StFX GRADS HELPING AFRICAN NOVA SCOTIAN AND INDIGENOUS YOUTH EXPLORE HEALTH CAREERS Two StFX graduates were back on campus this summer from July 17-20, 2018, helping run a summer camp for African Nova Scotian and Indigenous youth with a goal to increase representation in university and health careers. Michelle Patrick ’03, program manager with PLANS (Promoting Leadership in Health for African Nova Scotians) in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, & Health, at Dalhousie University, and Joe MacEachern ’10 Indigenous Health Program Manager, also in Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine, were part of four camps hosted in Nova Scotia, including at StFX, by the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicines Indigenous Health Program and PLANS, in partnership with The Johnson Scholarship foundation, StFX, Cape Breton University, and Nova Scotia Community College. Student participants learned about health care professions and potential career paths through hands-on activities, and experienced postsecondary life while meeting new friends and engaging in recreational and cultural activities. “The African Nova Scotian Health Science Camp and Indigenous Health Science Junior University are opening doors to postsecondary education and health careers. Partnering with StFX to host the summer programs has been so exciting for us as alumni to share some of our own experiences with the youth,” Ms. Patrick says. “African Nova Scotian and Indigenous youth see StFX and a career in health as a viable option for their futures and we’re happy to be a part of that.”

STFX STUDENT EMMA LOGAN ON A MISSION TO GIVE THE GIFT OF HEARING

Emma Logan

Emma Logan is on a mission to make hearing accessible for all. The fourth-year StFX Schwartz School of Business finance student from Halifax, NS, has started an initiative that will give new purpose to old hearing aids. She launched Hearing for All and is collecting used hearing devices, which can be prohibitively expensive for some people, to refurbish and redistribute to those in need. Ms. Logan, who worked on the initiative this summer as a Wallace Family Intern in StFX’s Innovation and Enterprise Centre, is collecting excess devices in partnership with Calgary, AB-based audiology charity Gift of Hearing. In April 2019, they will travel together on a mission to Yamasá, a small, rural agricultural community in the Dominican Republic where Gift of Hearing has an audiology clinic. They hope to bring 1,000 hearing devices to Yamasá, Ms. Logan says it’s always been her dream to start a social enterprise, something that would have an impact. She always wanted to make a difference, but until last year, she wasn’t sure how. “Now I have this greater mission to increase access and affordability,” says Ms. Logan, who lost her own hearing while just 13 months old after contracting meningitis. She’s worn hearing aids almost ever since and had cochlear implant surgery at age three that helps her hear. She says all through her life, family, friends, and the audio and hearing health care community have been extremely supportive of her. She has had access to abundant resources, and never struggled or had to go looking for help. That’s not the case for all people. Passionate about helping others, she is looking forward to seeing what impact she can make. StFX ALUMNINEWS l DECEMBER 2018

Y

Kwame Osei ’10 ’12 became familiar to a national audience this summer when he and his partner Dylan Elias raced to a third place finish on The Amazing Race Canada Heroes Edition. A youth mentor, teacher, author and football coach, Kwame holds both a human kinetics degree and a B.Ed. from StFX. He currently teaches physical education and sports performance at Holy Trinity High School in Fort McMurray, where he is also co-founder of Northern Elite Football. We caught up with him for a conversation about The Amazing Race Canada and the power of positivity. Q. What was it like to be on The Amazing Race? Did you have a standout moment or anything that surprised/tested you? A. Honestly, as cliché as it sounds, the whole experience was nothing short of amazing. The Mexico leg was one of my favourites because of the video messages we received, particularly from one of the youth we mentor. We told everyone this race was for more than us, we represented so many people and that video brought that back into focus. Also having opportunity to do some acting during that leg was super fun. Prior to the race, I told Dylan I had two fears, heights and snakes. Of course, I had to overcome both. In the first leg, I had to climb a 90-foot log, terrifying to say the least, but I chose to focus on the task and never looked down. In the finale when we flew to the top of the Rocky Mountains in Banff, I remember running to the top and I looked down from the path and noticed how steep a drop it was. I told myself, “You can die from this,” because I didn’t have a harness or anything keeping me from falling. At that moment I literally felt my knees buckle and tightness in my chest. I quickly focused my mind to the task instead of the fear of falling. Ever since, I’ve felt an emotional high. I feel as though I can do anything. The last moment where I felt extremely challenged would definitely be cleaning snakes in Jakarta, Indonesia. I have an extreme fear of snakes, mainly due to my culture and the fact my mother was bitten by a poisonous snake when we lived in Ghana, so for me to touch a snake, let alone clean a snake, was a huge feat.

Q. What appealed to you about competing on the show? A. Just being able to travel across Canada and see places I never would have is something I’m very grateful for. I’m a kid from Rexdale, Ontario. Growing up, I never would have thought I would be in a place like Dawson City, Yukon. This race exposed me to new experiences I never would have imagined. Q. You appeared on the Heroes edition. Could you describe the work you do? A. Dylan and I were nominated due to the work we do with Northern Elite Football, a non-profit organization we founded. Our aim is to mentor youth through the sport of football. The mentorship aspect grew and we decided to spread our message beyond football and began to give leadership/ anti-bullying talks at schools. A lot of people invest so much time on their physical appearance and social standings, but are not happy. We want to inspire people to invest more time on their mental health and understand that material things and social relevance don’t matter if you are not happy. We want to influence people to love themselves, not in a conceited way, but in a genuine organic way. Dylan and I also coach for the Holy Trinity Knights in Fort McMurray. We’ve coached for the Fort McMurray Ravens and are president and vice president for that association, and we’ve coached for the Fort McMurray Monarchs. Q. Why is it important for you to be a mentor? A. Being a mentor to youth is extremely important to me because I was once their age and was in dire need of a positive male role model. My goal is to be the person I needed at that age, because I understand the difference that can make. I truly believe I would have not gotten in as much trouble as I did when I was a teenager if I had positive, relatable people in my life.

the right action. In every situation we have this choice of what we want to perceive. I try to see the positive. Every moment is an opportunity to be a great moment, and the fact that I was on a national stage like The Amazing Race Canada gave me an opportunity to show that I practice what I preach, and hopefully others would be inspired by my mindset. I wasn’t always this way, but after various near death experiences, I know this life is truly a blessing and I choose to look at it from the most positive way and attract positive energy. Q. What influence would you say StFX had on you? A. I tell everyone, StFX saved my life. I came here as a knucklehead and I left as a man with aspirations to impact the world. The experiences I had at X molded me to become the person I am today. I am forever grateful to the faculty and staff who believed in me when I didn’t see any glimpse of positivity in myself. The StFX experience is like no other, not only will you get an amazing university education, but you will graduate with brothers and sisters for life. Q. Is there advice you would share with today’s students? A. Every moment can become the best moment of your life, cherish these moments, enjoy the X life! Q. What’s next for you? A. I plan on doing as much speaking as possible, to schools, teams, companies etc. I want to inspire as many people as I can. I will also be putting a lot of time into promoting my clothing company Triumph Elite. I am currently working on my second children’s book. Dylan and I want to take our Northern Elite Football camp across the country. Other than that, I will continue to plant seeds of greatness in the next generation through coaching and teaching.

Q. Throughout the race, you always seemed to remain positive. Why is that important? A. Perception is everything in life. The wrong perspective will lead to the wrong action, and the right perspective will lead to

A GAMECHANGER A $5.3 MILLION GIFT FROM GERALD SCHWARTZ—INCLUDING $4 MILLION FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES—CREATES 44 NEW BUSINESS SCHOLARSHIPS AND 20 BURSARIES AT StFX BY SHELLEY CAMERON-MCCARRON On a Tuesday afternoon in October, StFX students, staff and faculty gathered on the second floor of the Gerald Schwartz School of Business with good news on their mind—news that will not only transform the school, but the lives of many young people. “This is a day of celebration. And a day of celebration for future students,” Schwartz School Dean of Business Dr. Tim Hynes ’84 said as a large crowd gathered to toast the just released announcement that Canadian businessman and ONEX President and CEO, and StFX honorary degree recipient Gerry Schwartz ’98 is investing $5.3million into StFX. The gift, from The Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman Foundation, allocates $4 million to create 44 new business scholarships and 20 bursaries at StFX. StFX ALUMNINEWS l DECEMBER 2018

StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 characterized the gift as a “game changer.” “It’s going to transform the school,” he said. “Overall, over the period of four years, we will be able to touch hundreds upon hundreds of students who will be able to come to the school and study in the Schwartz School. So that really is a game changer.” Mr. Schwartz, he says, is investing directly into the future of tomorrow’s leaders. For the Canadian businessman, that’s what particularly appealed—the chance to help give university students a start in life. “To be able to provide a solid foundation in a young person’s life, to help open up that world of possibilities, is a very worthwhile investment,” Mr. Schwartz says. “I’m proud of my association with the Gerald Schwartz School of Business at StFX, which very much provides a high quality education for students and exposes them to a range of leadership and personal development opportunities.

“The great thing I like about StFX is when you make a contribution to the university it doesn’t disappear into some big fund … instead something happens,” said Mr. Schwartz. “People take action … and use the contribution and something moves forward, I love it.” The funding, to start in the 2019-20 academic year, will make an undergraduate business education at StFX even more accessible, and will help the Schwartz School—named in recognition of Mr. Schwartz’s already significant contributions to StFX—attract the best and brightest from across Canada and beyond. The new funding provides many benefits, including the introduction of the Schwartz National Scholar award for four students, who will each receive $20,000 a year, renewable for $80,000 over four years to attend StFX. Also included are bursaries for students in financial need, those looking for an international exchange experience and support for summer research internships. Academic scholarships will also be designated specifically for women, international students, and students

transferring from college diploma programs. In all, nearly 400 StFX students will benefit from the new scholarships and bursaries. In addition, about $1 million of the gift is dedicated to supporting StFX’s marketing and recruitment work across Canada to encourage young people from all over the country to attend StFX. There are also opportunities for new scholarships in the business program that can be matched by some of the foundation’s gift. “This is tremendous news for StFX, and great news for StFX business students. These scholarships and bursaries will have an incredible impact on the lives of many young people,” says Dr. Hynes. “A huge ‘thank you’ to Mr. Schwartz for the generosity and foresight to establish this wonderful legacy in support of talented young leaders.”

TRANSFORMED WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE COULD DO

a remarkable achievement during a time and climate when many schools were just trying to maintain enrollment. “About 10 years after we created the Schwartz School, we were able to transform again thanks to the generosity of many alumni donors, as well as Mr. Schwartz. This was another game-changer as the school moved from its location on the second floor of Nicholson Hall to its current location. This building opened in 2010 and it really transformed who we are and what we could do. It created a pride and it created a place. This gave us a home, this gave us an identity.” In five years, enrollment again increased by 18 per cent. Now, this latest funding will give the Schwartz School the opportunity to take it to yet another level. “We’re so fortunate to have this significant business person, one of the most successful in Canadian history, on our side,” Dr. Hynes says. “This is one of the proudest days of my time on administration at StFX. This will make StFX and the Schwartz School stand out in the university landscape.”

“We’re so fortunate to have this significant business person, one of the most successful in Canadian history, on our side,” Dr. Timothy Hynes

Dr. Hynes said Mr. Schwartz has had a tremendous impact on StFX for nearly two decades. “In 1999, the Schwartz School of Business was created with a significant gift from Mr. Schwartz. That gave us a significant boost of momentum. We went from being a department of business to a school,” Dr. Hynes says. During those first 10 years, enrollment increased about 15 per cent,

INVESTING IN YOUTH “On behalf of all students, I want to say thank you to Gerry Schwartz,” says Claire Stirling, Schwartz School of Business student and president of the Schwartz Business Society.

In the spirit of motivating other donors to contribute to supporting students, Mr. Schwartz has explicitly stated that his gift can be used as matching funds towards another donor’s gift within the Schwartz School of Business. Any donors who may be interested in learning more about this opportunity please contact Wendy Langley. E. wlangley@stfx.ca, T. 902.867.5182

The scholarships and bursaries will help StFX and the Schwartz School continue to attract top talent and give students greater advantage for participating in extracurricular activities such as internships and exchanges—activities that provide a well-rounded education. “Mr. Schwartz is a wise investor. He is investing in the valuable resource of Canada youth.” Murray Kyte ’87, StFX Director of Advancement, celebrated the news, noting how the funding will impact StFX on many levels.

The university previously had no specific scholarships available for students in the School of Business, he noted, and when looking at the university landscape across Canada, StFX is competing against many schools that do. “This puts us on the map in terms of the quality of scholarships offered. More importantly, it provides the financial supports that our students need. It allows us to support our business students,” he says. “We’re very thankful to Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman.”

Hundreds of StFX graduates, from as far afield as South Africa to Switzerland, from Hong Kong to Maine, Calgary to Halifax, returned to campus Sept. 28-30, 2018 to renew the ties of fellowship. These included special guests from the Class of 1968—celebrating their 50th Golden Grad anniversary. Alumni came back from many grad years—from the members of the Class of 2018 all the way to the Class of 1948, who celebrated an amazing 70 years since StFX graduation. Weekend highlights included the Friday night Welcome Home Dinner, which honoured StFX shining stars with Alumni Awards of Excellence. Among those receiving awards were Andrew Howlett ’02, Young Alumnus of the Year; Anne Campbell, Friend of StFX; Gerry McConnell ’67, Distinguished Alumnus of the Year; and the Chapter of the Year to Edmonton. 16

StFX CONFERS DEGREES AND DIPLOMAS; HONOURS ACADEMIC “TRAILBLAZERS” DURING

FALL CONVOCATION 2018 Friends and family filled the Keating Centre on December 1, 2018 to watch loved ones cross the stage and receive their hard-earned degrees and diplomas at StFX’s 2018 Fall Convocation. StFX conferred close to 300 degrees and diplomas, including to 41 graduates of the Coady Institute Diploma in Development Leadership program. Coady graduates came from 19 countries, including the first diploma graduate from Fiji. StFX’s Rankin School of Nursing also graduated the first students in its LPN to BScN Accelerated Option (AO) program. In all, 20 students were among the first graduates of the AO program, students who are also Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). “Each of you is unique,” StFX Chancellor John Peacock ’63 told graduates. “You each have your own story of struggle and achievement and your own circle of supporters. And you also have all of us here at StFX, who are with you 100 per cent as you pursue your hopes and dreams.” His comments were echoed by StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 who recognized that going through this journey means the graduates have persistence and are willing to do the hard

work needed to achieve their goals. “Don’t let that be lost on you.” He also spoke about the importance of kindness and caring for one another. “I think life is much simpler and the world would be better if we all just took a little time to be nice to one another.” StFX awarded honorary degrees to Dr. John F. Dewey, an expert in plate tectonics research known as one of the first geologists to apply plate tectonic theory to specific mountain belts, and to Dr. Thomas De Koninck, a scholar, humanist and author widely recognized for his work in human dignity and his writing on the philosophy of education. Also honoured during the ceremony were StFX senior human kinetics lab instructor Kelly Thompson, recipient of the 2018 Outstanding Staff Teaching Award, and StFX senior biology lab instructor Randy Lauff, recipient of the 2018 Outreach Award. Coady graduate Musola Cathrine Kaseketi of Zambia, delivered the address on behalf of the graduating class, and Glenn Horne ’07 ’08, president of the StFX Alumni Association, welcomed graduates into the Xaverian alumni family.

StFX DAY 2018 It’s a symbol of excellence, leadership, community and success, and on Dec. 3, 2018, it became very real for about 900 senior StFX students who received their coveted X-Rings in StFX’s Keating Centre on the feast day of St. Francis Xavier. “It feels like a dream come true. It’s a lot of emotion,” several StFX students said moments before members of the Class of 2019, clad in black gowns, walked one by one to the main stage to receive their X-Ring—a moment they’ve been anticipating for years. Energy and excitement were palpable across campus. “Finally,” StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 said. “I was driving up the street today and saw ‘zero days to X-Ring’,” he said, referencing the countdown signs in windows across town. Dr. MacDonald said he came back to the words of former StFX English professor Dr. Pat Walsh ’58 in the Prayers of the Xaverian Family as he reflected on what this ring represents. “You have earned this ring,” Dr. Walsh had said, “but the right to wear it must be earned every day for the rest of your life.” Dr. MacDonald encouraged the Class of 2019 to remember those words and to make this ring a symbol that brings them back to the values of looking beyond yourself and believing that everyone can

“IT FEELS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE”

impact the communities they live in. Guest speaker Agassou (Augy) Jones ’90 ’91 ’02, StFX Manager, Student Experience, reinforced the message. “It is a distinct privilege to possess the X-Ring. It also carries great responsibility,” he said. Students participating in the ceremony included master of ceremonies Sarah Comandante, co-president of the senior class, and Salome Barker, who offered words of welcome. Senior class co-president Carl Miller gave opening remarks, Pheerawich Chitnelawong delivered an explanation of the StFX motto, and Claire Keehan read from the writings of Dr. Moses Coady. Dylan Roach introduced the guest speaker and Emma Crilly gave the response. Students’ Union president Rebecca Mesay led the Xaverian Commitment.

HONORARY X-RING The honorary X-Ring, presented annually to someone who personifies the Xaverian ideal, was awarded to Dr. Jeff Orr, Dean of the StFX Faculty of Education, who received a standing ovation.

RANKIN SCHOOL OF NURSING STUDENTS LEARN WHAT IT’S LIKE TO LIVE ON THE EDGE

Senior Rankin School of Nursing students participate in the Living on the Edge simulation, experiencing what it’s like to live on the brink of poverty

The doors into the world of a person living in poverty in Nova Scotia opened wide for nearly 120 fourth-year Rankin School of Nursing students in September as senior Community Health nursing students stepped into Mount St. Bernard’s Chapel classroom and into the persona of someone living on the edge. The Rankin School of Nursing teamed with the United Way Halifax to offer a simulation experience called Living on the Edge as a required course in the curriculum that finishes this year. The intent is to help student participants and future nurses see the world from a different perspective says Rankin School Assistant Director Dr. Debbie SheppardLeMoine. The experience is designed to build empathy and understanding of what it’s like to live in poverty, and also to work towards helping close that gap.

A comprehensive, free, online course that helps educators—both teachers and B.Ed. students—understand and recognize mental illness while decreasing stigma in classrooms is now available—to great reviews. The self-directed course, TeachMentalHealth.org, was developed through a five-year partnership between education faculties at St. Francis Xavier University, Western University and the University of British Columbia, and TeenMentalHealth. Org. It’s intended to help pre-service and practicing teachers develop and expand their mental health literacy. StFX education professor and team member Dr. Chris Gilham says it’s not just that many people have signed up for the course, it’s the potential the course has to work for people and to make a difference that is exciting.

RE-ENERGIZING SCHOLARSHIP: StFX ENGLISH PROFESSOR APPOINTED CRRS BOOK SERIES EDITOR

IRVING SHIPBUILDING CHAIR AT STFX TAKES PART IN OPERATION NANOOK ’18

Dr. Adam Lajeunesse

Dr. Joseph Khoury

StFX English professor Dr. Joseph Khoury has an exciting challenge. Dr. Khoury, a well-known Renaissance scholar, has been appointed editor of the Tudor and Stuart Book Series at the Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies (CRRS) at Victoria University at the University of Toronto. He’s been tasked with re-energizing the series at this world-class centre. “It’s an opportunity to try to make sure certain books that were very important for studying history and literature, and are currently out of commission, are available to today’s scholars. I thought it would be an interesting challenge,” he says.

PSYCHOLOGY PROF AWARDED SSHRC INSIGHT GRANT TO STUDY HOW SHARING AND FAIRNESS DEVELOP IN CHILDREN ACROSS CULTURES Grant. The study, A longitudinal study of reciprocal sharing across diverse cultural context, will see her conduct research in two diverse cultural settings; one a traditional rural village in India and the other in Antigonish, a small town in Nova Scotia. Dr. Felix Warneken, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is a collaborator on the project.

Dr. Adam Lajeunesse, StFX’s Irving Shipbuilding Chair in Canadian Arctic Marine Security, took part in the Navy’s annual Operation NANOOK, joining several members of parliament aboard HMCS Charlottetown on its cruise from St. John’s to Iqaluit, as the frigate navigated around icebergs, conducted live fire exercises, and practiced combined operations with the ice-strengthened Danish frigate HDMS Vaedderen. Operation NANOOK is an annual Canadian Armed Forces exercise, which allows the military to rehearse ‘whole-of-government’ responses to potential safety and security threats in the North. Dr. Lajeunesse has studied these annual exercises, and Canada’s Arctic security more broadly, for over 10 years.

STFX CELEBRATES THE LIFE OF KEVIN FRASER, LAUNCHING KEVIN’S CORNER , PRESENTING HONORARY X-RING

StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 (left) and Anne Armstrong, wife of the late Kevin Fraser, tap the honorary X-Ring presented on behalf of Mr. Fraser on a kneeler from the University Chapel.

In his 15 years working at StFX with Sodexo as general manager of food services, the late Kevin Fraser touched many lives. On Nov. 3, 2018, colleagues, friends and family gathered at StFX’s Keating Centre for a special presentation to celebrate these contributions, presenting Mr. Fraser’s wife Anne with an honorary X-Ring on his behalf. The event also launched Kevin’s Corner, which will continue his legacy at the Student Food Resource Centre, providing students with healthy snacks. “Kevin was a true Xaverian. He always went above and beyond to help the university and more importantly, the students,” said Bob Hale ’88, StFX Director, Ancillary Services. “Kevin exemplifies who should wear an X-Ring,” StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 said as he made the presentation.

STFX COADY INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE

Sadi Motsuenyane with the post-colonial lit class.

LIFELONG LEARNING AND THE FIGHT FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE COADY ALUMNA RETURNS TO STFX AS COADY CHAIR IN SOCIAL JUSTICE

28

StFX ALUMNINEWS l DECEMBER 2018

South African born Coady Institute graduate Sadi Motsuenyane has more than 50 years of community development experience. Retired from the Government of South Africa as the former chief director of Sustainable Livelihoods with the Department of Social Development, Sadi’s community work has spanned from the historical South African apartheid system, entrenched in racial segregation, to South Africa’s current democratic model installed in 1994. Despite the advancements made through South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), she says there is still much work to do to create Nelson Mandela’s dream of a “rainbow nation.” “The way our settlements were during the apartheid, they’re still the same now,” Sadi says. “You cannot change things that are structural overnight. There are still high levels of unemployment, high levels of poverty, and the inequality gap is growing. Social justice is still an issue.” Sadi has been tireless in her fight toward social justice, and in implementing the asset-based approaches that she developed at Coady. “We are changing the mindsets of people

“AS LONG AS I AM STILL BREATHING THERE IS NO WAY THAT I CAN RETIRE— THE ASSIGNMENT IS JUST TOO BIG.” SADI MOTSUENYANE

from seeing themselves as passive beneficiaries of development to becoming active participants. Now they see themselves as assets,” she says. As a retiree, a mother, and a proud grandmother, Sadi emphasizes this journey of learning and sharing is not only lifelong, but a purpose to be fulfilled. “I will only retire on my day of death…

as long as I am still breathing there is no way that I can retire—the assignment is just too big.” There are benefits to embarking on this journey later in life. “When you are in government, you must say what government wants you to say; you must do what government wants you to do. But now, I am in the space where I can do what I think would benefit not only South Africans, but everyone.” Not only does retirement offer new freedoms, but she is also changing the face of retirement and inspiring leaders of the future. “There are people who do not see life after retirement. Everybody says now, ‘I am not afraid of retirement.’ My grandchildren say, ‘Granny, you challenge us. If you can do it at your age, why can’t we do it?’” Reflecting on her relationship with Coady, first as a student, then as a member of its advisory board, and now as its seventh Coady Chair in Social Justice, Sadi says, “The work of Coady is highly regarded in South Africa. “I am not here on behalf of myself, but on behalf of my country. South Africans are flying the Coady flag very high, very high.”

X-RINGS AROUND THE WORLD

GIANT X IN BUDAPEST STANDING TALL ON MT. KILIMANJARO On October 23, 2018, at 6:44 a.m., I stood on the tallest peak in Africa, and the highest freestanding mountain in the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro, at 5,895m (19,341’). The weather conditions were less than optimal at -30C and 60 km/hour winds. All members of our group were individual travellers and strangers. We formed a tight bond and a very strong team. We persevered as a team that supported each other with 100 per cent of us reaching the summit despite these extreme conditions. A life-changing human experience was had by all. Leroy Wall ’94 ’95

Jamie Mooney ’88 is pictured with a giant gold X from his recent travels in Europe. He says they accidently found this giant X in the Pest side of Budapest, which marks the historical Division X of the old city.

SPENT AWHILE ON THE NILE WALK THIS WAY Ronald Joy ’63 completed his eighth trek of the Camino this past summer. He is fully using his retirement to enjoy all that travel he couldn’t do when working. 30

Robert Walsh ’81 ’82, his wife Ellie and some friends recently toured Egypt and Kenya. They did a Nile cruise, which took in many temples, a balloon ride, and the Valley of the Kings. They also went to Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya where they ‘glamped’ at the Ilkeliani Camp. He is pictured here at the Temple of Edfu, an Egyptian temple located on the west bank of the Nile.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION UPDATE l GLENN HORNE ‘07 ‘08, PRESIDENT

ORIENTING TOWARDS THE FUTURE It has been my pleasure and privilege to serve as president of the StFX Alumni Association for the past three years. I am excited to announce there will be a new executive team taking office on January 1, 2019, led by president, Marc Rodrigue ’08 of Toronto, ON; vice-president, Alexia Tedesco ’09 of Calgary, AB; secretary, Flo Campbell ’83, ’85 & ’05 of Judique, NS; and myself in the role of past president. I would also like to welcome Shanna Hopkins ’01 as the new Director of Alumni Affairs. I have great confidence in this new team. At its AGM, the association approved a new constitution and associated bylaws. This new governance package creates additional opportunities to become involved with the Alumni Council and its executive and balances our strength and success while orienting the association toward the future. You can access the constitution and bylaws on the StFX Alumni Office website. At the Homecoming meeting, the Alumni Council also voted to mark the 125th anniversary of the establishment of the Alumni Association by approving a gift of

$250,000 to the university to establish “Alumni Plaza,” an area for ceremony, gathering, reflection and learning. Alumni Plaza will also recognize the symbiotic relationship between the association and the university. An official announcement is forthcoming. The association, represented by the Alumni Council, has taken great strides on a number of its strategic priorities, including discussions with StFX Recruitment & Admissions to begin to define the alumni role in its strategic enrolment plan, exploring opportunities to foster alumni giving, supporting our volunteers and assessing organizational sustainability and accountability. I would like to thank all members of the Alumni Council, past and present, for their commitment and work to support our association. I would also like to thank Glenda Bond and Jessica MacLellan ’12 at the Alumni Office for their support, as well as outgoing council members Meg Catalano ’06 and Roger Campbell ’89 for the contributions to the association and their local chapters. I would like to extend a special thank you to outgoing past president Andrew Howlett

’02. Andrew: your vision for our association and leadership has been a source of inspiration. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Mary Jessie MacLellan ‘87, former Director of Alumni Affairs. MJ: you have unparalleled enthusiasm for StFX; all alumni owe you a great debt of service. I wish you the best as the Associate Registrar for Recruitment. Finally, I’d like to thank my partner, Sarah MacDonald ’09, and our son, Aiden ’39, for sharing me with the Alumni Association and supporting me while I pursued a role I’ve truly cherished. Hail and Health! Glenn Horne ’07 ’08 President, StFX Alumni Association X

GREAT TO RETURN HOME, TO STFX

Growing up in Antigonish, StFX was engrained in our minds and spoken of daily. In fact, we passed the university daily as it was on our drive into town. StFX was where our mother worked, it was where we played minor sports, it was where we went to pass winter evenings cheering on the X-Men and X-Women teams. When it came time to choose where I would pursue my post-secondary education, I only applied to one school because I knew that StFX was the school for me. As a student, I worked in the Advancement department doing clerical work, and in the years following my graduation, I was fortunate to work for a year as a StFX recruiter, traveling across the Maritimes and New England

promoting StFX to prospective students. When the opportunity arose to return to StFX to work, I jumped at the chance. This was an opportunity to work with my mother again (she is in her 45th year at StFX), and more importantly, an opportunity to raise our two children in Antigonish and have them exposed to the StFX community at a young age, like my sister and I were. It has been a busy fall transitioning into my new position, but I have had the opportunity to meet some great alumni across the country during Homecoming, the Come From Away alumni outing in Toronto, and at a number of Presidents Receptions. The highlight so far though has been the opportunity to see over 900 excited future alumni receive their shiny

new X-Rings on December 3, on the Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your stories at an alumni event near you! Hail & Health Shanna Hopkins ’01 Director, Alumni Affairs X

ALUMNI HAPPENINGS

CLASSICS FOR CLASSICS – 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

This past summer, StFX philosophy professor Dr. Steve Baldner celebrated the 10th anniversary of the summer workshop, Classics for Classics, an annual event held in partnership with the StFX Alumni Office. The first workshop was held in 2009 with 30 participants and over the years it has grown to over 70 participants annually. Classics for Classics sees alumni from all over the world converge on campus for five days during the summer to discuss and study a pre-determined philosopher along with guest lecturers. The next workshop will be held July 1-5, 2019 where the group will read and discuss the work of Immanuel Kant, Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals.

STFX RUGBY PLAYERS AND FAMILIES

This fall, StFX alumni, family and friends gathered at Wayfarers’ Ale Society in Port Williams, NS to have a pre-game rally for the X-Women Rugby team the night before the U Sport Final—which the team won for their sixth national title! The StFX Men’s Rugby team stopped in to give well wishes after they captured the Nova Scotia Men’s University Championship over Acadia at Raymond Field.

COME FROM AWAY In October, over 100 alumni gathered for a reception at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, ON followed by a performance of Come From Away. During the reception, Gerald Schwartz and his wife Heather Reisman announced a major gift that will transform the scholarship and bursaries offered for students in the Schwartz School of Business. Following the performance, alumni were treated to a special question and answer session with members of the cast, including alumna Anna Ludlow ’05, the lead fiddler in the show.

This year, we kicked off our President’s Receptions in Montreal, QC at Automobiles Etcetera hosted by Amelia and Lino Saputo Jr ’18. We had a great turn out of alumni, parents and friends of StFX who were welcomed to a beautiful show room decorated specifically in blue and white for the evening’s festivities. Our guests had the chance to connect with new chapter president Jon Lerch ’10 and hear a campus update directly from Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93. Guests were able to reconnect while enjoying a beautiful assortment of hors d’oeuvres accompanied by Benjamin Bridge sparkling wine, from Nova Scotia vineyards owned by Gerry McConnell ’67. After Montreal we returned east for a great visit in Halifax at the Discovery Centre complete with alumni, parents of current students, as well as prospective students and their families. We then set our sights for western Canada and visits with our friends in Victoria, Vancouver and Calgary. We were fortunate to have timed our Calgary reception for the same evening that the local chapter was hosting Halifax based band, Signal Hill. We concluded the travel season with a trip across the pond with a warm gathering of alumni in Covent Garden - London, England.

FLORIDA The Florida alumni chapter held its annual gathering at the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club on March 10, 2018. After our meet and greet, Mass was celebrated by Fr. Patrick Wilson of St Martha’s in Sarasota. We were honoured to have representing StFX, President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93, Iain Boyd ’75, Chief Campaign Officer for the Xaverian Fund, and Maria Hartery ’87, Planned Giving Officer. After a very nice luncheon, Dr. MacDonald provided an update on StFX activities since our last meeting and future endeavors at the university. At this year’s gathering we had Florida alumni representation from the classes of 1946 through 1971 (apologies if I missed a year). With our 50/50 raffle,

auction, generosity of our alumni and the efforts of our committee members Dr. Michael MacKinnon ’57 and his wife Mary, Marie MacDonald ’58, the late Dick Dumais ’57 and Trudy Young, Dick ’65 and Sheila Johnson, and Anne Marie Gorman ’71, we were able to provide continued support to our Florida Bursary fund. The funds are used to assist students who are in need of financial aid during the year. We received heartfelt thank you notes from the recipients expressing their gratitude. Bursaries awarded in 2017-18 were in memory of Fraser Muir ’52. In September, our Florida alumni chapter was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dick Dumais. Dick exemplified the true Xaverian spirit. He was a great supporter of the university and a gracious and generous friend of the Florida alumni chapter. He will be greatly missed. We have confirmed our next Annual Florida Alumni gathering will be Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club in Sarasota. While not all of the nine prospective X students from the Edmonton area were able to attend due to other commitments, a wonderful afternoon barbecue was enjoyed by all. It is also interesting to note that some of the students have been invited to attend tryout camps for some of the varsity teams. Unfortunately, two of our former esteemed members were not present for the event this year; Archbishop J.N. MacNeil who passed away in February, and Laurie Oakes, our past president, who generously served in that capacity for the past seven years, as she moved to Antigonish in July. In previous years, a highlight of this event, was the talk given by Archbishop MacNeil to the students. He always delighted in extolling the distinguishing features of X, especially its history and the work of the Coady International Institute. The chapter celebrated other events over the fall, including our annual December 3 supper and are looking forward to hosting the President on April 10, 2019. We are especially in need of new people to serve on the executive council since three of our executive members have transitioned back to Nova Scotia. STFX DEVELOPMENT OFFICE WELCOMES NEW TEAM MEMBERS

The StFX Development Office is pleased to welcome and introduce two new additions to its team, Kathleen Provost, who takes on the new role of Campaign Director, and Rachel Pink, Senior Development Officer, based in Halifax, NS. Kathleen Provost, CRFE Campaign Director As campaign director, Kathleen Provost, a seasoned professional with over 25 years fundraising experience, will lead a single, multi-year comprehensive campaign to address StFX’s various financial requirements, working hand-in-glove with StFX’s dedicated Development team. Along with her extensive experience in local and national campaigns, Ms. Provost is well acquainted with StFX. She worked at the Coady Institute as Associate Director, Fund Development & Communications since 2013. “I have experienced the legacy and loyalty StFX holds in ‘whatsoever things are true,’ and I have witnessed the reach and impact StFX has had on friends and families touched by our commitment to social justice, human dignity and individual freedom,” she says. “Be they alumni or friends of StFX, I am looking forward to meeting each prospective donor as they inspire me with their belief in this philanthropic journey at StFX.” She says her preferred philanthropic initiatives are those one-to-one solicitations, leading to successful multi-year campaigns. “I cherish each project I have led, while living in Quebec, Ontario or Nova Scotia,” she says. “I was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee in 2012 in recognition of my contribution towards autism spectrum disorders in Canada, which I cherish as much as an artistic rendering of my first campaign, which succeeded in purchasing a building for a local soup kitchen.” Ms. Provost is a Certified Fundraising Executive, and as a continued commitment to her profession, she enrolled in StFX’s Master of Adult Education program.

Rachel Pink Senior Development Officer Rachel Pink joined the StFX Development team just over a year ago as the Senior Development Officer, based out of Halifax, NS, where she was born and raised. Ms. Pink spent eight years in Montreal and Toronto before she returned home to Nova Scotia. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree and taught at the elementary level for five years. It was after teaching that she found her calling working in philanthropy. She worked for the University of King’s College and for the QEII Foundation before coming to StFX. “My goal on a daily basis is to help elevate the profile of the university while engaging with our local alumni,” says Ms. Pink. “I enjoy working with prospective donors ensuring that their visions align well with the needs of the university and that their generosity is making a positive impact on the StFX campus.” Ms. Pink says among other things, “I look forward to chatting with alumni and donors about the incredible advances happening on campus, as well as about the bright students we have at StFX, many of whom are there thanks to the incredible generosity of donors who have given to the Xaverian Fund ensuring every qualified applicant has the opportunity to attend, regardless of their economic background.”

Joe Kelly ’59 is celebrating a rather important milestone—he’s about to cross the $100,000 fundraising milestone. Recently an article appeared in the Sherbrooke Record on his accomplishments. “King-Kan-Kelly,” as he is known, has collected cans and bottles, averaging a dime at a time, since 2002 and is now in sight of the $100,000 fundraising milestone, money which he has donated to 51 charitable organizations since 2002. He now supports four main organizations and has given nearly $53,000 to the Terry Fox Run over the years. The main thing is helping out worthy causes, he says.

Pat Walsh ’58, a 17-year-old high school graduate from North Adams, Massachusetts, arrived on the StFX campus in 1954. That very first evening in the auditorium of the new Chapel he heard the great Moses Coady speak in eloquent terms of education continuing for a lifetime. In 10 minutes Pat Walsh says he forgot he was an American. Little did he realize that the next 45 years of his life would be spent in Antigonish and StFX. After further studies he returned to alma mater and spent his adult life, teaching with his mentor, Fr. Rod MacSween, and serving the Antigonish community, winning both Outstanding Teacher and Outreach awards. Along the way he wrote and published “The History of Antigonish;” with the chaplaincy designed and produced “Prayers for the Xaverian Family; wrote “Mad Shelley,” winning drama in the Dominion Drama Festival, and “Thecla’s Choice,” a story of the Sisters of St. Martha with the National Film Board, among many other works. After spending his adult life at StFX, he was called to the west to help St. Mary’s University Calgary be established. As the first English professor he recreated his StFX experience in his retirement, serving university and church. His total

commitment won him outstanding teacher award, professor emeritus, and finally the university’s highest award as an Honorary Fellow in 2017. In April 2018 while preparing to return to StFX for his 60th anniversary of graduation, he thought of writing an autobiography for his family, friends, and classmates. It would be full of StFX and Antigonish. It would be not just his story, but would touch upon the lives of many who had enriched his life. So Professor Walsh raided his files and boxes of memorabilia covering nearly a century. Pat Walsh discovered in the process of writing the book how StFX and Antigonish and Canada and the wide world have changed his life. The result, Truth, Fiction, Lies: Confessions of an Italian-IrishCatholic-American Immigrant to Canada will be published soon by Friesen Press and will be available through the StFX bookstore and major bookstores. He was the deputy Canadian police commander in Kabul, Afghanistan, from May 2011 to May 2012. From 2003 to 2014, Canada played an integral role as part of the NATO coalition in Afghanistan. The Government of Canada sent its military and diplomats to that war-torn country to help bring about peace. One little-known fact about Canada’s contribution during the 11-year conflict was the presence of almost 300 Canadian police from across the country who volunteered to help train, mentor, and build the capacity of the Afghan National Police. Canada’s mission was to help Afghans rebuild their country as a stable, democratic, and self-sufficient society. This one-year snapshot takes a look at the bravery demonstrated by Canadian peacekeepers in a volatile and dangerous place. Mr. Malone retired from the RCMP in January 2015 after a 26 year career. Tyler Hellard ’01, an English grad and former Xaverian Weekly editor has kept busy writing commercial copy and magazine pieces for the last 17 years. Tyler’s first novel, Searching For Terry Punchout, came out in October from Invisible Publishing. The early reviews have been really positive and he toured with the book this fall, including appearing at Word On the Street Toronto. Paul Ash ’02, an educator for more than 27 years, has been named the superintendent of the Tri-County Regional School Board in southwest Nova Scotia. He is also making history as the first school board superintendent of African descent in Nova Scotia. Paul, a native of Upper Big Tracadie in Guysborough County, is currently the director of the Department of Education’s African Canadian Services Division. He starts the new job on March 31.

Rebecca Morley ’01 corporate director and audit chair, Birchcliff Energy, and past board chair, YW Calgary, has been named by Avenue Magazine in Calgary, AB to its 2018 Top 40 Under 40 list. “With her financial acumen, drive

and community spirit, Rebecca Morley is shaping some of Calgary’s most important organizations, including the new $60 million home of YW Calgary,” the magazine article notes, citing her as an accomplished financial analyst, volunteer board member, athlete and mother of two daughters who has put her determination to work in quite literally shaping the city. The magazine reports she will start a new career in January in management consulting with McKinsey. Brad Mac Neil ’02 ’03 has accepted an administrative position as Senior Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, USA. Dr. Mac Neil is a licensed clinical psychologist in Virginia and leaves his prior positions as founding training director of the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) Doctoral Residency in Adult Clinical Psychology, clinical psychologist and program evaluation coordinator with the Adult Eating Disorders Program of KHSC, and adjunct assistant professor and clinical supervisor in the Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University. Brad, his wife (Laura) and two daughters (Breton and Oakley) were relocating to the Washington DC metro in fall 2018. Friends are welcome to get in touch: macneilb3@gmail.com Peter Chisholm ’05 and his wife Heather McNair welcomed a son, Robbie Arran, on June 13, 2018. Both Peter and Heather work for Ernst Young in Calgary, AB. Steve Roddick ’07 won a seat on the recently updated Whitehorse City Council. Claire O’Gorman ’08 has been recognized for her contributions to the city of Calgary, being named to Avenue Calgary’s 2018 Top 40 Under 40 list. The program coordinator at Safeworks, she is described as a tireless advocate for vulnerable populations, and as instrumental in increasing access to harm-reduction services in

Calgary, including leading the creation and operation of Alberta’s first supervised drug-consumption site. Since it first opened, the site has had more than 27,000 client visits — more than 22,300 involving drug consumption. As of last July, staff had responded to 446 overdoses — lives that otherwise may have been lost, an article on the awards in Avenue Calgary states. As Safeworks’ program coordinator, Ms. O’Gorman has become the public face for the often-controversial supervised consumption site and for harm reduction more generally. “There’s a misperception that harm-reduction work and things like supervised consumption and needle distribution enable drug use or entrench people in addictive patterns. In fact, it does quite the opposite. It brings people into services, and helps them access health-care providers and social-service providers,” she says in the article. George Gavel ’09 married Dr. Najala Orrell in a ceremony on August 24, 2018. The couple currently reside in Regina, SK.

Patrick Newton Bondo ’14 has taken on the leadership role of Director of Amnesty International Canada. He has worked in executive positions over the past 15 years in non-profit organizations and government departments and has had the opportunity to participate in several leadership development programs, all valuable, he says, but none of which compared to the quality and depth of the Development Leadership Program he completed at StFX in 2014. “The quality of the presenters was second to none indeed I feel so strongly about the program’s worth to me both in terms of the return on investment that I have received and to future participants in terms of how they will benefit from the program and enhance the non-profit field. I highly recommend this program for non-profit, profit leaders and government agents at any stage of their career,” he says. “As a leader

Special StFX Onesie! Pictured here is Andy Hartmann, born August 28, 2018, to Gina Gill Hartmann ’05 and Mike Hartmann ’05. The shirt Andy is wearing is pretty special. When Mike and Gina first started dating, while attending StFX, his nephew was born in 2003. They managed to scrape together what little money they had and they sent a StFX onesie to him back in their hometown of Ottawa. It was the first purchase they made as a couple and Gina says it kind of solidified her welcome into the family. Fifteen years later, their nephew and his family gave Andy the same onesie to welcome him into this world!

The Tax Court hires more than a year in advance because the process is long and detailed and the court is looking for students who will, upon commencing their clerkship, be a lawyer with an interest in tax. Graham says he gained his interest in tax undoubtedly from his experience with the StFX BBA program! He is currently completing his articles at the law firm Stewart McKelvey.

(Jack) O’Donnell, Professor Emeritus, two-term chair of the StFX Department of Music, and world-renowned conductor of the Men of the Deeps, North America’s only coal-miner chorus, which he conducted for 50 years. A music professor at StFX, his alma mater, for 40 years, Jack received an honorary degree from StFX in 2016. FROM UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT l MURRAY KYTE ’87, VICE-PRESIDENT, ADVANCEMENT

THE X-RING’S CALL TO ACTION It’s a regular habit of mine to read the Prayers for the Xaverian Family, (revised edition) a small pocketsize book that includes prayers for all creeds, but also, an excerpt from the 1993 X-Ring Ceremony address by English professor Dr. Pat Walsh ’58. Dr. Walsh’s words resonate every time I read them; he best captures what it means to be a Xaverian and they inspire me. There is a call to action for each of us. Here is how Pat so eloquently framed it at the conclusion of his address to the Class of ’93: “So, at this ceremony, bolstered and strengthened by your undergraduate experience, make this ring a symbol of your commitment to face a weary and suffering world and make the best of it. Make this ring a symbol of the values this community of scholars stands for. You have earned the ring, but the right to wear it must be earned every day of the rest of your lives…If, when you look at the ring on your finger, you can say to yourself, ‘…I have been faithful to the values and goals of my Xaverian

heritage—I have sought whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are beautiful, whatsoever things are good,’ then dear friends, your X-Ring truly will symbolize a peace and happiness beyond all understanding.” Every time I read these words, I look at my ring and ask if I have earned the right to wear it. It’s a humbling experience of self-reflection but also inspiration, much like what happens at every Homecoming when we celebrate those alumni inducted into the Hall of Honour. The ceremony, established by the Class of 1991 as a lasting contribution to their alma mater, is a highlight of Homecoming weekend. Over the past 27 years, we have inducted over 80 deserving alumni who have exemplified the Xaverian commitment. This year’s inductees were Allene MacPherson Goforth ’65, Morag Graham ’68 and Joseph McGann ’68. Learning of their careers and dedication of service to others reminded me of Dr. Walsh’s call to action and his question of us. But you don’t need to be present at Homecoming to experience these feelings. Take a walk over to the Angus L. Macdonald Library and you will see all the photos and citations of the inductees since the ceremony began. Reading the citations, you will be overcome with those feelings of humbleness and reflection. I encourage all of you do it. It is good for

the soul and brings forth great pride knowing your fellow Xaverians have been engaged citizens making their communities a better place. This year’s induction ceremony was especially poignant for me as it marked the first time I met Dr. Walsh who returned to campus for his 60th class reunion. When he advised me he was attending the Hall of Honour, which I was presiding over, with his permission, I closed the event by reading the words of his address. It was a fitting way to end the celebration with the words of a professor who adeptly captured the essence of being a Xaverian, but also lived a life of great service to others in his own right.

Hail & Health Murray E. Kyte ’87, M.Ed, LL.B, B.B.A Vice-President, Advancement To learn more about the Hall of Honour including past inductees and how you can nominate someone, please see www.stfx.ca/alumniHoH. Dr. Walsh is currently writing a book, the autobiography of a lifetime Xaverian, to be published soon by Friesen Press. It will be available through the StFX Store and major bookstores. X

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A STUDENT’S LIFE

When it comes to making a difference in his life, third-year StFX Gerald Schwartz School of Business student Robert Scott says he owes a lot to Bob Manning ’90—the reason he’s at StFX. “Bob was the one who introduced me to this whole world, and I’m glad he did,” says Mr. Scott of Saint John, NB who transferred to StFX during his first year. “I was looking to make a change,” recalls Mr. Scott, who had never before considered attending a university in Atlantic Canada and had no connection to StFX. Mr. Manning, the father of his good friend Emma (also a StFX student) and a family friend, knew all about StFX. He and his wife Kelly ’89 are both graduates, as our many relatives. “He called me and thought StFX would be a good fit for me. He felt I would thrive in this environment. He had a representative from the university call me to talk about what the business school and StFX was all about.” That January, Mr. Scott started classes. “I’ve been here ever since, and I wouldn’t want to leave.”
