PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | DR. KENT MACDONALD ’86 ’93
ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC SUCCESS HIGHLIGHT SUCCESSFUL FALL TERM This has been an incredibly exciting fall at StFX. We have had much to celebrate ranging from a very academically-strong first-year class, to the announcement of the Mulroney Institute of Government, the single largest fundraising project in the 164 year history of our university. The Mulroney Institute will be an anchor for continued academic excellence and enhancing the university’s reputation for many years ahead. Success has been achieved outside the classroom with our women’s rugby team winning their fifth national championship, this time in Victoria. In addition to rugby, StFX won AUS championships in Women’s Soccer, Men’s Cross Country and Football. I don’t recall a fall semester when our student athletes represented us so well. This fall was not the only time we celebrated StFX student athletes. This past summer many of us were cheering for two StFX alumni as they competed in the Rio Olympics. It was wonderful to watch our own Eric Gillis ’04 ’06 finish 10th in the Olympic Marathon while Ghislaine Landry ’10 led Canada to a bronze medal in Women’s Rugby Sevens.
Although rugby was a new event at the Olympics, the marathon has been a sport since 1894 when the International Olympic Committee was founded in Paris. It was back in that same year that an integral part of StFX’s history would be made. It was in 1894 that Mount Saint Bernard (MSB) College was first affiliated with StFX. Originally opened 11 years earlier to provide education for young women, the “Mount” became the first co-educational Catholic university in North America to grant degrees to women. Over the next century, MSB would be home to thousands of students and exceptional women leaders. It was within that historical context that we wrote a new chapter for the Mount this past September. It was a beautiful Friday afternoon when the MSB courtyard filled with members of the Board of Governors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends of StFX and Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame. We came together to celebrate our $15 million investment into these beautiful buildings. With over 225 bedrooms for StFX students, the renovated MSB is now also

It was the Rankins’ generous multi-million dollar gift that allowed us to begin construction on the school. This AlumniNews provides just some insight into these stories and into other incredible people who walk this campus and support our university on a daily basis. I encourage all alumni and friends of StFX to continue to visit our campus and to continue supporting StFX – university as it’s meant to be!
Hail and Health.

NEWSFLASH WHAT’S NEW ON CAMPUS AND IN THE StFX COMMUNITY
REBALANCING RELATIONS The work to rebalance relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this country was very much in evidence at StFX this term with numerous events that focused important conversations on the issue. Here we take a look at some of the recent events held on campus.
Senator Murray Sinclair
EDUCATION, RESPECT, KEYS TO RECONCILIATION, SENATOR MURRAY SINCLAIR SAYS IN POWERFUL KEYNOTE Education is how we will heal. Teaching our children we are all equal will help bring about reconciliation, Senator Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, told a full house in StFX’s Schwartz Auditorium on November 8, 2016. “Education holds the key to reconciliation. It is where our country will heal itself,” Senator Sinclair said in a powerful, nearly two-hour address that concluded a two-day visit to StFX. “We need to tell the story of the Indian Residential Schools, to change the school curriculum so that students can learn this history. And if we do it the right way, it’s going to change how we feel and talk to each other,” he said. “With young people we don’t have to address issues of racism. We need to try to educate our children in ways that don’t allow that racism to become part of their life.
“That’s the key to going forward – reconciliation turns on a dime. I want to be your friend, I want you to be mine. We need to become mutually respectful.” During his keynote, Senator Sinclair provided a succinct and moving account of the history of the Indian Residential Schools, which existed in Canada from around the 1870s to 1996. We shouldn’t be surprised by the economic despair, the social and political dysfunction that followed, he said. “Don’t think it would be any different for you,” Senator Sinclair told audience members, if they were forcibly removed from family and put in a different culture. StFX President Kent MacDonald thanked Senator Sinclair for the great gift of his time and knowledge. “You’ve helped more clearly articulate the direction we need to go as a university.”

The Right Honourable Paul Martin delivers the Allan J. MacEachen Annual Lecture in Politics
ADDRESSING INEQUALITY KEY TO REPAIRING RELATIONSHIPS WITH FIRST NATIONS, SAYS FORMER PM PAUL MARTIN Canada must repair relationships with First Nations people, and address funding inequalities for Indigenous education, health care and housing if we want to live up to our values as a progressive nation. That was the message from former Canadian prime minister, the Rt. Hon. Paul Martin, who addressed a capacity crowd gathered for the Allan J. MacEachen Annual Lecture in Politics, November 15, 2016. Mr. MacEachen, the former federal cabinet minister and senator, was in attendance. In his lecture, entitled “A Conversation on Indigenous Issues,” Mr. Martin spoke about a range of First Nations topics including the work of the Martin Family Initiative, which he founded upon leaving office, in empowering Aboriginal businesses and championing education for Aboriginal students. “I think these public forums are a significant part of the answer,” said Mr. Martin. “Which is why I really think what StFX is doing here tonight is so important.” In introducing Mr. Martin, StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald recalled the former prime minister’s significant legacy.
TAKING UP CALLS TO ACTION
STFX EDUCATION STUDENTS, HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MOVE TOWARDS RECONCILIATION
Nearly 200 StFX B.Ed. students and high school students from local, provincial, and band operated schools joined at StFX in November to hear and learn from Senator Murray Sinclair, Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and Alan Syliboy, noted Mi’kmaw artist and 2016 Coady Chair in Social Justice. Senator Sinclair led a presentation on the history of residential schools in Canada. Mr. Syliboy talked about the way art can be used as a form of cultural reclamation, protest and expression, and encouraged the students to represent their understandings to Senator Sinclair’s presentation on provided canvases. The interactive session was aimed at helping both Mi’kmaw and non-Mi’kmaw students think about their responsibilities in moving the Calls to Action forward. The B.Ed. students praised the session, convincing them of the important role teachers have in taking up the TRC’s Calls to Action. 4

SOCIAL JUSTICE FOR RECONCILIATION -HUNDREDS GATHER FOR LATEST PRESIDENT’S COLLOQUIUM Even if it’s hard, one must stand up to speak truth in the face of injustice. We must all look after and help one another. It makes a difference. Those were sentiments shared November 3, 2016 as hundreds of people filled a learning space in the Mount Saint Bernard residence for the latest StFX President’s Colloquium, “Social Justice for Reconciliation: Indigenous Perspectives.” The President’s Colloquia, started by StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 are intended to extend the academic mission and important conversations into the residences. Over nearly two and a half hours, a rich and emotional panel discussion led by Mi’kmaw leaders, Alan Syliboy, artist, activist and 2016 Coady Chair in Social Justice; Cheryl Maloney, President of the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association; Molly Peters, Paqtnkek Band Council Member; and Kerry Prosper, Mi’kmaw Elder and Paqtnkek Band Council Member, looked at what reconciliation means. Moderator was Dr. Robyn Bourgeois of StFX’s Coady International Institute. Special guest was Brad Firth, “Caribou Legs,” visiting Antigonish to speak about his run across Canada to raise awareness about missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

INAUGURAL DEVEAU SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS CELEBRATED Samantha Brown knows firsthand the opportunities opened thanks to the Jeannine Deveau Educational Equity Endowment Scholarship Fund, established at StFX to make university education more accessible to members of the African Nova Scotian and First Nations communities. Ms. Brown, a third-year Elizabeth and Thomas Rankin School of Nursing student from Antigonish, NS, received a $2,000 Deveau in-course Scholarship, and was one of 31 inaugural recipients of the fund honoured at a scholarship reception October 27, 2016. “I want to say thank you to the Deveau family. It makes a big difference. It helps toward my tuition. I don’t have to worry about that stress, and most importantly it helps me to continue my degree,” she says. Second year B.Ed. student Haley Bernard of Pictou Landing, NS, says
the fact the award is an in-course scholarship means a lot to her as it is based on her hard work and marks.“I feel hopeful to see all these Deveau scholars,” fund administrator Bill Gunn, Ms. Deveau’s nephew, said in remarks. Last October, Ms. Deveau ’44 gifted $8 million to StFX, the largest private alumni donation of its kind in StFX’s history. The fund, as it is tied to a matching initiative from other sources, has the potential to grow to $13 million. StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald, one of several speakers to bring congratulatory remarks, said one can already see the benefit of the fund, and how it is making an impression into the soul of StFX. He said the fund has also given StFX a great lever to go out to raise matching funds, to help change students’ lives.
STEVE AND KATHY SMITH DONATE FAMILY HOME TO STFX
Steve ’74 ’10 and Kathy Smith (centre) with StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 and wife, Mary-Ellen MacPhee ’87 ’05
Steve and Kathy Smith’s exceptional generosity to his alma mater continued with the news the StFX alumnus, businessman, philanthropist and president and CEO of The Central Group of Companies and his wife have donated their family home to the university. Located on Nicholson Court in Antigonish, the 1994-constructed home will be used as the official residence for StFX presidents and their families. It will be known as The Smith House. “StFX has long played an integral role in our community of Antigonish. With our recent move to Doctor’s Brook, we recognized an opportunity we thought may help the university,” says Mr. Smith. “Our hope is that the home will be used as an additional resource to further the academic mission, not only by providing living quarters, but by providing space to host guests and small university functions.” The gift is the latest in the Smiths’ long legacy of support for StFX. “Steve and Kathy are true leaders who care deeply about building community,” says StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald. “They are among StFX’s greatest friends and on behalf of the university community, I thank them for their ongoing support. The Smith House will honour their generosity and legacy for generations to come.” StFX ALUMNINEWS l WINTER 2017

Starting in September, students at StFX will be able to enroll in an innovative new degree that will allow them to study health from both an arts and science perspective. The Bachelor of Arts and Science in Health is a four-year degree that takes an interdisciplinary approach to health and draws on scientific, social and humanistic knowledge. StFX Dean of Arts Dr. Karen Brebner and Dean of Science Dr. Petra Hauf are both excited by the interfaculty approach. “When we integrate the sciences and the arts we broaden students’ understanding of what they’re learning,” Dr. Brebner says. Dr. Hauf says the degree is also in keeping with today’s health landscape and will ensure students are in pace with developments in the health field, including the recognized importance of the humanities in developing a culturally knowledgeable approach to health. Dr. Hauf says StFX already has successful health professional programs, but a need was identified outside those programs. “The BASc in Health is going to fill this gap.” The first year is a foundation year consisting of introductory courses in science and arts. As students progress, they will focus their studies by choosing to complete either a biomedical or social determinants and health equity concentration, in addition to taking courses in the Health Humanities. In their fourth year, they will complete a project aimed at addressing a health-related issue. During each of the four years, students will also take two core health courses together.

A CONVERSATION WITH OLYMPIC MEDALIST GHISLAINE LANDRY Ghislaine Landry ’10 remembers the feeling when the Olympic bronze medal for women’s rubgy sevens, a sport that made its debut at the 2016 Rio Games, was placed around her neck. “Pure joy,” she says on that historic moment for the Canadian women’s team. “You work so hard, you want it so much. Just to get on that podium was a goal we set,” says Ms. Landry, a standout who scored 18 of Canada’s 33 points in the Olympic bronze medal win over Great Britain, and Canada’s leading Olympic scorer with 41 points overall. “The fact we came out and put on a performance we could be proud of…that we did it in that high pressure situation, it’s a feeling like no other,” says the StFX human kinetics grad who was back on campus in October to speak at the Women of Excellence luncheon in support of female varsity athletes, attend a StFX Leadership Academy session, and join X-Women and Dr. J.H. Gillis High School rugby practices. The Canadian women’s rugby team experienced a lot of mixed emotions in Rio, she says. With gold as its goal—they knew it was possible; they’d beaten each team before —the team felt the defeat when they lost in the semi-finals. That they came out after in the bronze medal game and put on a good performance they could share with family, friends, and Canada, was special, she says. “It felt like gold to us. We wanted to feel good about what we’d done and to share it with Canada.”
DO WHAT YOU WANT BECAUSE YOU WANT TO DO IT, NOT BECAUSE IT’S POPULAR. GHISLAINE LANDRY
With her parents in the stands, she says competing at the Olympics was a dream come true. Involved in sport from a young age, Ms. Landry, now based in Victoria, BC, where she trains full time with the Canadian women’s senior team, says she always wanted to be an Olympic athlete. When she switched from soccer to focus on rugby as a teen, the latter wasn’t an Olympic sport. It meant giving up on a dream of sorts, but she chose the path that made her happiest. Years later, when rugby was announced as an Olympic sport, it merged two dreams.
FOLLOW YOUR HEART Following your heart to what makes you happy is important, says Ms. Landry, who earned a CIS national rugby title, a CIS rookie of the year award and two CIS player of the year awards during her time with the X-Women. “The biggest thing I’ve learned is we’re all just trying to be the best version of ourselves. Your decision making needs to come from inside of you, for what you love and what you want.
“Do what you want because you want to do it, not because it’s popular,” she says. That’s what prompted her to choose rugby as her sport. Following her heart also led to her choice of university. A Toronto native, she didn’t take the path most expected, and enroll at Western, where many other Ontario rugby players chose to pursue their dreams. She had visited StFX and says she fell in love the moment she stepped on campus. That year, X-Women Rugby went on to beat Western en route to winning the CIS national title. “That was self-fulfilling, the idea of do what you want because you want to do it. It reinforced you’ve got to do what you want to do for yourself.” All the great highlights of her life, no matter the outcome, she says come back to choosing the path that makes you happy. Being back on the StFX campus – the first time since graduation – is a bit of trip, she says. “It brings you back to memories of being here,” she says. “The environment created at this school lets people develop.” She says young people come here at such a critical time in their development and find the tools to discover who they want to be.On the rugby field, she says Coach Mike Cavanagh lets athletes grow as leaders. “We’re giving the opportunity to overcome the challenges, with his guidance. “The leadership stuff you’re given the power to play with is unique,” she says.

STFX NAMED HOME of BRIAN MULRONEY of INSTITUTE GOVERNMENT
MOST TRANSFORMATIVE PROJECT IN StFX HISTORY BY SHELLEY CAMERON-MCCARRON A standing ovation greeted Canada’s 18th Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney ’59, and the news on October 26, 2016 that StFX will be the home of the $60 million Brian Mulroney Institute of Government. “This is the most transformative project in the history of StFX,” President Dr. Kent MacDonald ’86 ’93 told the standing-room only crowd in the Schwartz School of Business Auditorium. “This announcement is the most significant in the history of our venerable institution,” he reiterated as he provided an overview of the new academic institution, the first of its kind in Canada, and what it will mean to StFX, to students, to the area, and to the country. As he unveiled plans, Dr. MacDonald thanked Mr. Mulroney, in attendance with his wife Mila and daughter Caroline Mulroney Lapham, who, he says, almost singlehandedly helped raise the $60 million for the project, including a $1 million personal gift from him and his wife Mila. In total, $55 million was raised from private donations and $5 million from the Government of Nova Scotia. StFX ALUMNINEWS l WINTER 2017

PUBLIC POLICY AND GOVERNANCE Dr. MacDonald said the StFX Board of Governors has approved $40 million towards the construction of the 75,000 square foot Mulroney Hall, which will house the Mulroney Institute, a leading centre for undergraduate teaching and research that will offer a four year degree in public policy and governance. Mulroney Hall, to open in late 2018, will replace the dated Nicholson Hall on upper campus with flexible and modern learning spaces, a 300-person auditorium, an open atrium, a new centre for teaching and learning, labs and office spaces. As well, Mulroney Hall will be home to artifacts spread throughout the building, memorabilia from Mr. Mulroney’s nearly nine years as prime minister, items that reflect significant moments in Canadian political history. Visitors will find a trove of historical documents including letters from world leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher and a replica of the prime minister’s office including his original desk, and the desk of first Canadian prime minister John A. Macdonald, a gift Mr. Mulroney received from the Conservative Party.
NEW SCHOLARSHIP Beyond the building, a second transformation will include over $10 million for three academic chairs with the vision to grow the endowment to support a total of six academic chairs. These chairs will be dedicated to areas including Canada-U.S. relations, climate change and the environment, human rights and the advancement of women, and the Irving Shipbuilding Chair in Arctic Marine Security Policy.

“IT WAS A HIGH HONOUR FOR ME TO BE OF SOME SERVICE TO THIS SPECIAL PLACE.” BRIAN MULRONEY The third area of investment, and perhaps the most exciting, Dr. MacDonald said, is the over $10 million endowment in scholarships and awards, including over $1 million for Aboriginal Canadians. Dr. MacDonald said that Mr. Mulroney has been absolutely unwavering in the fact the institute must be more than a building. Its real impact will be attracting outstanding students regardless of financial background.
SERVICE TO THIS SPECIAL PLACE “It was a high honour for me to be of some service to this special place,” Mr. Mulroney told the crowd that spilled into overflow rooms and watched the announcement live via stfx.ca. Mr. Mulroney recalled growing up in Baie Comeau, Quebec and a conversation he had one night with his father Benedict, a conversation he says he will never forget. The son told his father about an apprenticeship opportunity at the paper mill where his father worked, and which would provide him with a good wage and a job for life. The elder Mulroney told his son he knew times were tough and the money would come in handy. But he said, “the only way out of a paper mill town is out of a university door and you are going to university.

“ARRIVING AT STFX, I KNEW IT OPENED THE DOOR TO A WIDER WORLD. I COULD SENSE IT.” BRIAN MULRONEY “That’s how I ended up at StFX,” the former prime minister recalled. “Arriving at StFX, I knew it opened the door to a wider world. I could sense it. “Who did I meet here? Friends of a lifetime. I learned about the power of ideas. I learned the big ideas that transform and change for the better are all about leadership.” Mr. Mulroney, who for years has funded major student awards at StFX through the Benedict Martin Mulroney Scholarship—“in memory of a man whose life and sacrifice made everything possible for me”—says he learned much at StFX, leaving with his degree and values instilled by superb faculty. StFX, he said, is a remarkable place for creating leadership, and has long played a disproportional role in Canadian politics. In fact, at one time three of the four officers of parliament were StFX graduates. Today, he said, is all about how this initiative will help StFX enhance its vital role in leadership development to better serve the citizens of this beloved country. Mr. Mulroney thanked the gracious and generous donors, his wife Mila and daughter Caroline, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Group, the Hon. Frank McKenna ’70, and the Government of Nova Scotia
for all they have done to support the institute. Mr. McKenna recognized “the absolutely extraordinary heavy lifting done by Mr. Mulroney himself on behalf of StFX.” It’s a testament to the huge respect held for Mr. Mulroney by people around the world who may not have heard of StFX but are giving to support Mr. Mulroney, he said. Mr. McKenna also thanked the vision, energy and tenacity of former StFX President Dr. Sean Riley ’74 who helped get this project started and current StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald for taking it on and carrying it forward with much determination, and the extraordinary efforts of Ms. Mulroney Lapham on the project.
ANYTHING POSSIBLE In announcing the $5 million contribution from the Government of Nova Scotia, Antigonish MLA and Nova Scotia Finance Minister the Hon. Randy Delorey ’00 told the audience, filled with many students, to take a moment and look at the stage party behind him, to think of these individuals who walked this campus and studied in the classrooms, and to look at the students beside them and to think of the accomplishments of the alumni of tomorrow. “You never know the path you’ll take or where classmates may go,” he said as he noted he hopes the project reminds students that any path is possible.

A new chapter in the storied history of Mount Saint Bernard opened on Sept. 29, 2016 when a large crowd gathered in the Mount courtyard for the official reopening ceremony. “It’s an absolute joy that these historic buildings have been brought back to life,” StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald said during the well-attended ceremony as he noted how good it is to see the soul of the students back in the hallways and faculty teaching here. Mount Saint Bernard, which offers 227 single rooms and a newly renovated academically focused residence, is home to a distinct group of students, and also one of the finest nursing schools in the country, the Elizabeth and Thomas Rankin School of Nursing.
RENOVATION HIGHLIGHTS
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE $15 MILLION RENOVATIONS INCLUDE: • • • •
The top three floors have been renovated to include 227 new single rooms. The rooms include new furniture, doors, and windows, more electrical units, and new lighting. Group-style washrooms were demolished in favour of 48 single washrooms. Laundry facilities are located on the fourth floor and kitchenettes on the third and fifth floors. The bottom floors provide a new, wholly revamped space for the Rankin School of Nursing. A centerpiece of the teaching facilities is the impressive 6,600 square-foot state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Lab. The former chapel was converted to a classroom space that can accommodate 180.
• Gilmora gym was updated to become more of a recreational room and space for events and visiting lectures. • Renovations took advantage of the building’s beautiful natural surroundings overlooking an historic courtyard, which itself was renewed. • The main Marguerite Hall entrance was modified and includes a foyer, café, seating and study space. A new doorway provides accessible access to the courtyard beyond. • The second floor common area, near the entry leading to School of Nursing office space, was opened up with new windows to overlook the courtyard. • In all, over 500 new windows were installed.

MOUNT IS A LIVING, LEARNING COMMUNITY
First-year nursing students Molly Rankin and Jessica Plummer
“It’s a special day on campus as we reopen Mount Saint Bernard,” agreed afternoon emcee Bob Hale ’88, Head of Student Services. The residence closed in 2013, “but the spirit of the Mount certainly didn’t diminish,” he noted. “It’s been nearly two years since we started working on this project and today it’s here. We have an amazing residence, and an amazing Elizabeth and Thomas Rankin School of Nursing. It brings back alive this part of campus, which is significant.” “It allows us to continue this amazing sense of tradition, and to create new traditions,” said Joelle French, StFX Students’ Union VP Residence Affairs on the residence which originally opened in 1883 as Mount Saint Bernard College to provide education for young women. Mount Saint Bernard College was entrusted into the hands of the Congregation de Notre Dame. Dr. MacDonald paid tribute to the vision of “these remarkable women leaders” whose relationship with StFX continues to this day. The former college became affiliated with StFX in 1894. In 1897, four young women received Bachelor of Arts degrees, making Mount Saint Bernard the first Catholic college in North America to initiate postsecondary degree programs for women. Living and learning in the newly opened Mount Saint Bernard residence has been a tremendous experience, says first-year nursing students Jessica Plummer of Hammonds Plains, NS and Maggie Rankin of Mabou, Cape Breton. As an academically-focused living, learning community, the residence gives first preference to nursing students and to members of the first year Humanities, Social Justice and Health Studies colloquia. StFX philosophy professor Dr. Steve Baldner, who teaches in the Humanities Colloquium, says one of the best things about the colloquia is the way students form a cohort of scholars. “Living together in residence greatly enhances this, and MSB is an excellent place to combine communal living with private study,” he says. Ms. Rankin and Ms. Plummer can attest. “I get caught up in the hallway talking about classes all the time,” says Ms. Rankin, who along with Ms. Plummer have already applied to live in MSB again next year. “You just open your door and say ‘chemistry’ and everyone comes,” adds Ms. Plummer. “I totally agree there is a learning academic kind of mix.”
COMMUNITY, FRIENDSHIP There’s also much opportunity to develop community and friendship, they say. Neither knew each other before arriving at StFX, but they say they are now part of a large friend group made in the residence. “It’s nice to have people you see all the time, in classes and in residence. It’s easy to make friends,” Ms. Rankin says. The RAs and house presidents have been great in building community and offering a lot of fun activities, they say. And they like the fact there’s a café and a computer lab in the building. Ms. Plummer says it’s a quiet residence, which is nice, as it’s easy to study, and you’re near classmates if you have questions or want to study together. “The building is really social. I’ve made a lot of friends, but when you want, you can close the door to your room.” Putting a focus on academics – including incorporating one study and one TV lounge on each wing – was a priority.

“THIS IS A GREAT HONOUR FOR ME AND MY WIFE. MY WIFE HAS DONE AN INCREDIBLE JOB. IT IS SO NICE TO HAVE IT NAMED AFTER HER.” THOMAS RANKIN Mr. Rankin ’60, CEO of Rankin Construction Inc., StFX engineering graduate and native of Judique, NS now living in St. Catharines, ON, donated $2 million to his alma mater – $1.5 million to support renovations to Mount Saint Bernard, where the School of Nursing is housed, and specifically to create a state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Learning Centre; and $500,000 to the Xaverian Fund for Scholarships and Bursaries. “This is just an incredible gift back to your alma mater, Tom, and Beth, to a school you know well. I want to deeply thank you,” StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald said. “This is a great honour for me and my wife,” Mr. Rankin said as he thanked friends and family, including StFX classmates who travelled from Ontario, Halifax, Dartmouth and Judique to attend the ceremony.
Mr. Rankin told those gathered they should think of Beth, and not him when they think of the school, as he recognized his wife of 52 years, and a nurse herself, as the cornerstone to his family and business success. “My wife has done an incredible job. It is so nice to have it named after her.” School of Nursing Interim Director Dr. Joanne Whitty-Rogers says the renovations come at an opportune time as the school introduces a new nursing curriculum. She also thanked the Rankins. “Your generosity will live on forever. It will always be remembered.”
IMPRESSIVE NURSING SIMULATION LAB OPENS Visitors may think they’ve stepped into an actual hospital setting so real is the Nursing Simulation Learning Centre in StFX’s Elizabeth and Thomas Rankin School of Nursing. The centre simulates a hospital right down to ‘patients’ in rooms, an impressive lab built to resemble a clinical practice that provides valuable experiential learning opportunities where nursing students, working with mid and high fidelity manikins, proceed through patient scenarios in a safe controlled environment. Nova Scotia Minister of Labour and Advanced Education Kelly Regan, Minister of Finance and Antigonish MLA Randy Delorey and StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald officially opened the centre on September 16, 2016.

StFX CLASS OF 2017 RECEIVE COVETED X-RINGS Excitement filled the StFX campus December 3 – the Feast of St. Francis Xavier – as 980 students received a much-revered symbol of hard work: their X-Ring. “My X-Ring app tells me that today’s the day,” joked StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald. “I know you’ve waited so long for this,” Dr. MacDonald said as he paid tribute to the X-Ring recipients. “In my view, you represent a special spirit— the Xaverian spirit,” he said, noting that two of his four children were among those receiving X-Rings. Master of ceremonies and senior class co-president Connor O’Brien said the Class of 2017 has always asked what they can do for the university. A striking example of the senior class’ commitment is Project 2017, a bursary that will benefit a StFX student with financial need who is entering their final year, and has lived the full Xaverian experience. All senior class students were encouraged to donate $20.17 to the bursary, which will be matched by StFX Chancellor Dr. Susan Crocker. Kyla MacDougall, senior class co-president, introduced guest speaker, Mark MacIsaac ’91, Schwartz School of Business faculty member. “I know some of you are wondering what will come next, and who you are to make a difference. Well I’ll tell you who you are. You are StFX,” he said. “You can do ordinary things in extraordinary ways. Go on out there and give your X-Rings meaning by living your lives well and by making a difference.” Roger Campbell ’89, StFX Alumni Association secretary, delivered alumni greetings. The honorary X-Ring was presented to Jane Aker, described as a true friend of students, faculty and alumni. She has worked at StFX since the 1970s, most recently in the Dean of Arts’ office. PROJECT 2017: SENIOR CLASS GIFT LEAVES LEGACY FOR FUTURE STUDENTS Even before they’ve graduated, StFX’s Class of 2017 has already left a legacy that will help future students. The Class of 2017 has launched Project 2017: Senior Class Gift, a student led bursary to assist other students. Organizers say it’s a way for the class to give back to their community and raise funds for the Xaverian Fund for Scholarships and Bursaries to help students succeed. Senior class presidents Connor O’Brien, a fourth-year honours business and accounting student from Yellowknife, NWT, and Kyla MacDougall, a fourthyear accounting student from Woodstock, NB, say the project is a meaningful way for the class to help fellow Xaverians.

“StFX cultivates community engagement. This is an excellent way on our way out the door to give something back to a place that has given us so much,” says Mr. O’Brien. “StFX really fosters community. Leaving is really hard for some people, to leave something behind, to help out the family, is exciting,” says Ms. MacDougall. Their goal is to have 100 per cent participation from senior students contributing either $20.17 this year, or $20.17 every year on StFX Day, December 3, over the next five years. A bursary will be created to help a senior year student(s) with their education or transitioning into life. StFX Chancellor Dr. Susan Crocker has generously offered to match every

$20.17 raised from students this year. As well, during this year’s X-Ring ceremony, students asked their parents to consider supporting their class gift. Mr. O’Brien and Ms. MacDougall say after the class came up with the idea, they brought the concept to StFX Advancement, who they say was thrilled to help and provide advice. “It’s cool to see our community is on board with us,” Ms. MacDougall says. Funds will go towards a bursary for an incoming senior student in financial need and who has lived the ultimate experience. This criteria was set earlier in the year when members of the senior class met for a pizza party and discussed what this meant to them. For more on Project 2017, please see www.stfx.ca/Project2017

FALL CONVOCATION 2016 More than 200 graduates – including 39 from the Coady International Institute – received degrees and diplomas at StFX’s Fall Convocation on December 4, 2016. StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald welcomed the graduating class along with their friends and families. He also paid special tribute to graduates from StFX’s Coady International Institute. “You left your families behind and came to Antigonish with the commitment that you would make your communities stronger and prosperous,” he said.“Your presence on this campus made our lives more exciting and the learning more rich.” Dr. MacDonald noted the graduates included members from StFX’s first cohort of Masters of Education students, specializing in leadership in mental health and leadership in teaching Indigenous students. An honorary degree was conferred upon John C. (Jack) O’Donnell ‘58, Professor Emeritus and former chair of the StFX Music Department. Dr. O’Donnell made an outstanding contribution to Canadian culture as conductor and musical director of The Men of the Deeps, North America’s only coal miner chorus, organized 50 years ago to preserve the rich folklore of Cape Breton’s coal mining communities. Dr. O’Donnell chronicles this journey in his new book, The Men of the Deeps, A Journey With North America’s Only Coal Miners Chorus. He also made important contributions as a humanitarian, working along with his wife Judy to build and support L’Arche Antigonish. Coady graduates Asri Sawiji from Indonesia and Winston Vincent Williams Jr. from Antigua and Barbuda addressed convocation, reflecting on the doors an education opens. Psychology professor Dr. Ann Bigelow was honoured with the StFX Outreach Award, and L’Arche Antigonish received the Community Partner Recognition Award. Chancellor Dr. Susan Crocker conferred all degrees and diplomas. StFX Alumni Association President Glenn Horne ’07 ’08 welcomed new graduates into the alumni family. StFX ALUMNINEWS l WINTER 2017

ATHLETICS X-WOMEN RUGBY WIN 5TH NATIONAL TITLE
StFX X-Women rugby head coach Mike Cavanagh has created a dynasty at the university. His X-Women squad won their fifth U Sports national championship banner in the past decade. The X-Women went 3-0 at the eight-team event in Victoria, BC, including a 27-19 victory over University of Ottawa in the gold medal game to win the Monilex trophy and bring it back to campus for an incredible fifth time. When asked about his team’s success on the national stage, Coach Cavanagh commented, “I am extremely proud of these young women. This team decided in the off-season that they were going to be national champs. They put in a tremendous amount of hard work all season long and every time they walked on the field they got better.” “They had no quit in them,” Coach Cavanagh continued. “Every time they put on the X jersey they wore it with Xaverian pride and it was an honour and privilege to coach them.” The X-Women had an undefeated 6-0 AUS regular season with a convincing 62-0 win over Acadia in the AUS championship game to secure their 18th conference banner.
X-MEN CROSS COUNTRY CLAIM SIXTH CONSECUTIVE AUS TITLE
The X-Men cross country team ran to their sixth consecutive AUS title at the championship held at StFX on their home course in October. With six runners in the top ten, including the gold, silver and bronze medalists in Calvin DeWolfe, Alex Cyr and Scott Donald, the X-Men had a convincing win. They advanced to the CIS national championship where they placed 9th overall. The X-Women cross country squad came second at the AUS championship with two runners in the top ten and were 18th at the CIS championship. 24

Since the 1960s, StFX’s Coady International Institute has welcomed Indigenous leaders from Canada and around the world. In recent years, there’s been a renewed emphasis on supporting Indigenous community development in Canada. Almost 100 First Nation, Inuit and Métis women have graduated from a customized women’s leadership program. Indigenous community builders are taking other Coady programs, and for the first time, an Indigenous activist (artist Alan Syliboy of Millbrook First Nation) was selected as StFX’s 2016 Coady Chair in Social Justice. “We’ve been listening to our donors and supporters,” said Dr. June Webber, Coady director and vice-president of StFX. “They feel it is so important to continue to support the kind of development that Indigenous communities want for themselves. So we’re looking to enhance our efforts, which includes working with local leaders in various communities across Canada.” Ms. Webber also points to the recent Coady Celebrates fundraising event in Halifax, NS, which featured three prominent

That report issued 11 specific calls-to-action for educators. “We have a wealth of experience supporting Indigenous students and curriculum development,” said Dr. Robyn Bourgeois, who manages Coady’s Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program. “We have a lot of experience to share with the university committee that is collaborating on a discussion paper.” The university also hosted several events this fall to raise more awareness: An evening with Alan Syliboy discussing Art for Social Change; a President’s Colloquium on Social Justice for Reconciliation; and two days of campus events with Senator Murray Sinclair, former chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. The Xaverian Weekly student newspaper also devoted a full issue to commemorate Mi’kmaq History Month, while calling for substantive changes within StFX to better support Indigenous students and to hire Indigenous faculty and staff.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION UPDATE l GLENN HORNE ‘07 ‘08, PRESIDENT
LASTING IMPACT, AND FUTURE PLANS It’s been quite the fall on campus at StFX! As featured in this issue, we celebrated not only the reopening but also the renewal of Mount Saint Bernard. The renovations completed at this historic structure are true to its story and soul. The residence rooms have been given a facelift and the classroom spaces and the new nursing lab ensure learning and living are pursued hand-in-hand. We also welcomed the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney to campus in October to announce the Mulroney Institute of Government. Perhaps our most famous alumnus, his namesake Institute will reshape our campus and university, providing new opportunities to explore the fields of government and public policy. Many people have contributed to this momentous accomplishment, but none more than Prime Minister Mulroney – and for that he has our thanks. Alumni Council has also been busy this fall, coming off the heels of a productive Homecoming meeting. Terms of Reference have been approved to award Chapter of the Year, as part of our Alumni Awards of
Excellence. Watch for an opportunity to nominate your local chapter. The association has also made progress on the development of work plans to bring to life our new strategic plan. The work plans have been developed by small committees of dedicated Xaverians, and are led by: • Foster Alumni Connections Marc Rodrigue ’08 • Facilitate Community Engagement Susan Chisholm ’92 • Develop Volunteer Leadership Capacity Andrew Howlett ’02 • Seek Alignment and Support the Priorities of StFX University – Laurie Oakes ’79 • Manage and Coordinate Communications Roger Campbell ’89 • Ensure Operational Sustainability Nick Head-Petersen ’13 If you are interested in contributing to the development or implementation of the association’s strategic plans, please let us know. Finally, I am very proud to announce that
at the Homecoming meeting in October, every member of the Alumni Council committed to contribute to the Xaverian Fund. This is in support of Dr. Kent MacDonald’s leadership and commitment to raise $50 million over the next five years for scholarships and bursaries “to ensure that the most talented students, regardless of financial background, can attend StFX, receive the highest-quality education and attain their degree.” We are very proud to play a part in this tremendous initiative. WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN
L-r, Cody MacLellan , Class of 2017, Iain MacLellan, Class of 2020, and MJ MacLellan ‘87
As I walk down the halls of the newly renovated Mount Saint Bernard, I distinctly remember my first trip to the Mount, to 2nd Camden, to begin my life at StFX. As I look out and see the Nicholson Hall classroom section, I am reminded of arriving at my first class, English 100
with Dr. Jim Taylor. Now, I think about the upcoming Mulroney Institute of Government. There have been changes to campus and there are more to come. StFX is making the old new once again. The rich history of both MSB and Nicholson are infused with new life and new possibilities. They
can provide students with expanded educational and residential opportunities. The possibilities are endless. More than ever, it is exciting to welcome both new students and alumni to campus. This year during Homecoming, we welcomed back more alumni than ever before. As excited as we were to welcome them back, they were excited to be here, celebrating their memories and creating new ones. Each year, I am honoured to have the chance to celebrate Homecoming and our Xaverian community, honoured to be able to share the experience. This fall, I was pleased to welcome my son, Iain, to StFX as a freshman student. He joins his brother, Cody, who is in fourth year. As I watch both of them experience life as a StFX student, I think what’s old is new again and I couldn’t be happier that they both have the chance to experience it.

ALUMNI HAPPENINGS THE ABCs OF STFX - STFX ALUMNI AFFAIRS PRODUCES NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK
Olivia MacDonald, Class of 2018
The StFX Alumni Affairs Office has produced a new children’s book that celebrates StFX with every letter of the alphabet. The ABCs of StFX highlights university life from ‘A’ to ‘Z,’ helping children learn their ‘ABCs’ while learning about some of the great things that make the StFX experience what it is, from academics through to exams, from O-Crew to X-Ring. “Every time I show it to people, I’m happy,” says Alumni Affairs Director Mary Jessie MacLellan ’87 who had the idea of producing a children’s book for about five to six years. This year, thanks to StFX Co-op student Olivia MacDonald ’18, who spent the summer working in the Alumni Office, Ms. MacLellan was able to move the idea from concept to reality. “Olivia had a great summer. She’s an awesome student. We talked about the book and she said she would do it. She did everything. She planned the letters, she arranged the photo shoot with university photographer Blaise MacMullin and she laid out the book.”The book features the StFX mascots, Super Xavia and Captain X, at different locations across campus, with each photo highlighting a different letter. “I found it really rewarding.

StFX ALUMNINEWS l WINTER 2017
I was able to see the cool aspects of campus,” says Ms. MacDonald. She says she enjoyed the entire process involved, in particular going around campus to plot out each letter to capture what makes StFX so iconic. “I was able to use my creativity skills. I had a lot of opportunity to work outside my comfort zone and to do things I never would have thought I could do.” Ms. MacLellan says she had copies of the book at a recent alumni event where one graduate bought four copies, one for each of her grandchildren. Another, a former mascot, said he can’t wait to read it to his children. “Some of our alumni talk about StFX to their kids from the day they are born, some sing Hail and Health, and people send their baby pictures in to the AlumniNews magazine. So it was fun to be able to do something for kids.” While it is aimed at children, Ms. MacLellan says current students and adults alike will enjoy it. “It’s a walk down memory lane for our alumni, and current students will find themselves in the pictures.” The ABCs of StFX costs $15 and is available online and in-store at the StFX Campus Store and locally at StFX Alumni House in Xavier Hall.

THE STFX CONNECTION REMAINS STRONG The connection to StFX and the Xaverian family is immediate. It is felt from the moment our students receive their acceptance letter and is only strengthened when they attend a student send-off in their hometown. Our chapter network is always growing and it is essential in building and maintaining the StFX connection. December 3, StFX Day, is an important day on our campus, but it is also an important day for our chapters. Alumni gather around the world to join in the excitement of our graduating students and to reminisce about their time at StFX. Whether it is an informal reunion with friends, a quiet reflection or celebrating mass and dinner with an entire alumni chapter, we can all agree that the StFX connection remains strong. YARMOUTH, NS Yarmouth area X alumni and new and returning students gathered at Rudders Restaurant in Yarmouth on the evening of August 24 to celebrate the upcoming start of the academic year at X. We also welcomed an alumnus from Antigonish, who happened to be in the area conducting field work for his PhD thesis. This event was especially gratifying for me as both my son and daughter were able to attend together for the first time as alumni. It turned out to be an incredible evening of stories and laughs for all. This group of students seems especially vibrant and personable. Light food fare and refreshments were served and enjoyed. X-cookies for this event. Thanks to Sharon Sullivan ’74 for putting together gift bags of useful X-items for the budding new and returning students. Thanks also to returning student Gabby Hurlburt for helping to contact and communicate with new and returning students about this event. Best wishes on behalf of all of our alumni for a successful year to all of our new and returning students! Randy Cleveland ’81 TORONTO, ON The Toronto Alumni Chapter is having an exciting year! The chapter came together to cheer on a couple of our Toronto sports teams, first with a trip to a Toronto Marlies AHL hockey game in the peak of their best season on record, and then an outing to watch the Toronto Blue Jays take on the New York Yankees. With 30 attendees at the Marlies game and 80 for the Blue Jays game, many X friends reunited, and lots of new alumni connections were made! The Marlies game even featured the daughter of one of our alumni taking a ride on the zamboni at intermission, and two of our alumni winning the Kiss Cam competition! A special thanks to our first time event attendees, and to our newest chapter members, the Class of 2016! We closed out the summer with two fantastic events, first our student send-off, and then the President’s Reception. We held our annual student send-off at Bidali’s Bar and Cucina where the Class of 2020 GTA students and their parents were able to hear tales from alumni, and learn what to expect as they begin their journeys at StFX! In September, we were delighted to welcome StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald for the President’s Reception, and hear news of

Toronto Chapter Team EASTERN CAPE BRETON The Eastern Cape Breton Chapter has had an eventful spring and summer. In May, the chapter held a social at Talo Cafebar in Glace Bay. This event was well attended, and it included several alumni who were attending an alumni event for the first time. Alumni had the opportunity to mingle, enjoy some delicious appetizers, and win some wonderful StFX prizes and Talo gift cards. In August, the 4th Annual Alumni BBQ was held at the Arkandor Estate in Boularderie, home of Larry ’84 and Wendy Andrea. This event was a gathering of alumni, officials from StFX, as well as a send-off for new students attending StFX in September. The rainy weather couldn’t dampen the X-spirit which shone through the rain and clouds. New students were able witness this spirit firsthand as they made connections with alumni as well as with officials from X. On behalf of the Eastern Cape Breton Chapter, we would like to thank Larry and Wendy for being such wonderful hosts! The Eastern Cape Breton Chapter would also like to thank Erin Neary ’06 for her years of work on our executive. We wish her the best of luck and look forward to seeing her at future events! We would also like to welcome Stewart LeForte ’73 to our
executive team. At our events, we continue to collect food bank donations for local charities in order to give back to the local community. Thank you to everyone who donated. It reflects the X spirit of service to community that has long been a part of StFX. We are in the process of planning future events including our “X-Rings in the New Year” event in early 2017. Alumni in Eastern Cape Breton are encouraged to follow the chapter on social media for up to date news about upcoming events - on Twitter @cbstfx and on Facebook www. facebook.com/cbstfx. bus of 30 alumni, a pub-crawl with 345 in attendance, and the annual student send-off at Brightwood Golf Course was a resounding success. As is tradition, alumni gathered on December 3 to celebrate St FX Day. For this mass, we began a new approach. Instead of having a central liturgy committee setting up the feast day mass, we had a liturgy contact person invite alumni throughout the HRM, to host the mass and reception in their local parish church. We will be able to review this in the future. Upcoming events include a pub night, an alumni skate, and the ‘Success After StFX’ networking event. Please follow on Facebook to keep up to date: St FX Alumni - Halifax Chapter. Our alumni outreach program stays strong. There are monthly visits to the people at the rooming houses and the men’s shelter providing nourishment and other services. There was a band performance on Gottingen Street and a bus provided to take “The Shining Lights” to visit Antigonish for a concert. The Sisters of St, Martha would like to express their gratitude to the Halifax alumni. Without X, many of the events would never happen! Every Dec 3, the Sisters pray and give thanks for each of us. VANCOUVER VANCOUVER, BC The Vancouver Alumni Chapter was pleased to host its annual student send-off in August returning to beautiful Stanley Park for the first time in a number years. We were pleased to have five first year students along with parents, current students and alumni get together to share stories about StFX and Antigonish. Best of luck to all the first year students and we look forward to catching up with you during the summer! The Vancouver chapter is looking for any individuals that may be interested in helping plan and execute events over the next year so please reach out if you’re interested. Jared Bowles ’07 CALGARY, AB Hello from the Calgary Chapter! We have had an eventful year with lots of excitement to keep our chapter busy. We kicked things off with our annual student send-off BBQ in June. This year we had 60 students from Calgary and the surrounding area attending StFX as first year students. It was wonderful to have our current students volunteer their
time, share their experiences and answer questions for the new students, but most importantly to help welcome them into our StFX family. One of those first year students, Allie Biddell-Halcrow, was the proud recipient of the Leone Campbell Memorial Bursary. Allie truly embodies the leadership, enthusiasm and devotion to our community, which echo that of Leone’s. We were pleased to award her with the $500 bursary and wish her the best of luck in her first year at X. Following the BBQ, we grabbed our boots and tossed on cowboy hats just in time for our 4th Annual Stampede Party, which supports the Leone Campbell Memorial Bursary. After the dust settled on what turned out to be a fun-filled night of dancing and reminiscing, we managed to raise an additional $1,300 from ticket sales which is being donated to our friends at United Way Calgary. We hope to continue to grow this event and maintain the traditions of community involvement and charitable giving which is near and dear to the hearts of our Calgary alumni. Finally, a very special thank you to everyone who was able to attend our President’s Reception and StFX Day celebration. It was the perfect way to open the holiday season and to look back on the successful year we have had as a chapter.
We wish everyone a safe and joyful holiday and look forward to seeing you all in 2017! Alexia Tedesco ’09 THUNDER BAY, ON As a relatively new resident of Thunder Bay, I was happily surprised by the number of Xaverian alumni living in the area! ANTIGONISH/GUYSBOROUGH, NS The Antigonish/Guysborough Alumni Chapter held its annual student welcome at Chisholm Park just across from The Wheel in August. This location has become a bit of a tradition for our student welcome. Of course, Wheel pizza was served while the new incoming students were entertained with trivia questions from members of the Students’ Union. This is an important time for our local alumni to thank our students for choosing to stay and experience all StFX has to offer. We were fortunate to have with us Alumni Affairs Director Mary Jessie MacLellan and Programs Coordinator Jessica MacLellan, along with Alumni Association President Glenn Horne, members from StFX Recruitment, Safety and Security and the O-Crew. A number of alumni also joined us in welcoming our new students and wishing them great success at StFX. Best of luck to our new StFX students!
Annual Lobster and Steak Dinner at the Dovercourt Community Center. We had over 39 alumni and three future alumni in attendance. On Saturday, August 6, 2016, we held our new student send-off and alumni BBQ at the home of Brenda and Larry Rankin. As always it was a wonderful event with more than 30 in attendance. We had two new students in attendance Christine Dyjur and Jiliane Barton and three current students Paige Armstrong, Ryan Moore and Maya Koller. When in Antigonish at the end of September for Alumni Council meetings I was able to take some of our current students out to dinner at the Wheel (Paige, Ryan, Bowen, Maya and Jolene). As always, connecting with our students was a highlight of my trip to X. While at X, our chapter was very well represented by Pierce Peters who was his class representative for the ceremonial kick off for the Homecoming football game! We also hosted a President’s Reception on November 24 at the home of Jane ’88 and Roger ’86 Smith. Following this, we held our StFX Day dinner at Dovercourt Community Hall on December 3, with a social and dinner and pub night at the Pint afterwards. Please take note that our Lobster Dinner will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017. Dr. MacDonald updated us on all that has been going on at StFX since our last meeting as well as future endeavors at the university. At this year’s gathering, we had alumni representation from the classes of 1946 through 1998 (apologies if I missed a year). At a gala dinner in Toronto in November 2016, the U4 League announced that it was adopting a new name – the Maple League of Universities. The U4 League was formed in May 2013 as an association of four small, residential, primarily undergraduate universities in three provinces. StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald said: “This is a remarkable initiative. At the very core of this partnership is the commitment to delivering the very best academic and experiential learning to our students.” Next spring, each of the four universities will be offering a unique course for students from the four universities. “In effect, we are expanding and enhancing student learning opportunities,” said Dr. MacDonald. “Imagine having the ability to access different courses, conferences, competitions and lectures across any of the Maple League institutions,
fully confident in the academic quality and delivery. This truly is a game-changer.” “I will always be a proud Xaverian, but this evening I am excited to feel a part of something even bigger, the Maple League of Universities,” StFX grad Rachel Mitchell ’13 said. “The fact is, our campuses are different but what these institutions have in common is an unending, unwavering, and unyielding commitment to student life and higher education. “The MapIe League is a multiplier, not a divider. With this collaboration, all students, across each campus will be able to participate in lectures by some of the most important intellectuals of our time – almost weekly,” she said. “This is just the tip of the iceberg. I am very excited about the possibilities and opportunities for even greater collaboration in the months and years ahead,” Dr. MacDonald said.

THE
2016 HONOURING OUR PRESIDENT’S CLUB MEMBERS STFX APPLAUDS PRESIDENT’S CLUB MEMBERS FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE Thank you for making a difference in the lives of others. That was the message the university community extended to friends and supporters of StFX who came together on June 11 for an evening of celebration and recognition of the university’s generous supporters during the 2016 President’s Gala Dinner. The evening annually thanks members for their commitment and support, and recognizes those members reaching milestones, including new Lifetime Xaverian Patrons, new 20-Year Xaverian Patrons and new 10-Year Xaverian Patrons. “A big thank you to all of you for being part of this evening, and for your ongoing support,” Master of Ceremonies Murray Kyte ’87, Vice President, Advancement, told the large crowd gathered in the Keating Centre. “StFX’s outstanding reputation is due in no small part to the support of our generous donors.” He said on this night when StFX honours its donors, we’re reminded of why people give and support StFX, and there are many reasons. “But there’s one constant. It’s to assist students in accessing a quality learning environment.”These donations have a considerable impact on the lives of students, and make StFX, and in turn, society stronger. “We’re truly well blessed to enjoy the generous support of our patrons,” Wendy Langley ’92, Director of Development, said as she led the recognition of patrons during the ceremony. StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald added his thanks to all for helping provide students with leading academics and an experience that is life altering. He thanked all for giving gack to young people who they may never meet, for changing a life, for making a difference for others.

Members of the Morris family during a celebration dinner to announce the Evelyn and Denis Morris Scholarship Fund
FAMILY, FAITH AND EDUCATION CHILDREN OF EVELYN AND DENIS MORRIS SET UP $250,000 SCHOLARSHIP FUND IN THEIR HONOUR
Evelyn ’57 and Denis Morris have always believed in family, faith and education. And they’ve always believed in StFX. Now, their eight children are honouring their love, legacy, and commitment to higher education by establishing a $250,000 scholarship fund in their name that will help young people realize their dreams. The Evelyn and Denis Morris Scholarship Fund is part of the Xaverian Fund for Scholarships and Bursaries established by StFX President Dr. Kent MacDonald, and will provide $10,000 a year for students in financial need. The first scholarship will be presented to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Evelyn’s StFX graduation. “We wanted to do this as a tribute to the investment they made in our education, to set up this fund in their name,” says daughter Clare (Morris) Bilek ’99, speaking on behalf of the family.

StFX ALUMNINEWS l WINTER 2017
“Without their investment, we wouldn’t be in a position to contribute. It was always about education. Family, faith and education. That’s the three pillars of our family.” The family’s strong connection with StFX stretches back for decades. Evelyn was one of eight Mooney siblings who attended StFX from Saint John, NB. Out of eight Morris children, six attended StFX. Today, a third generation is graduating with already four grandchildren wearing the X-Ring. Of three generations of the Mooney family, approximately 40 family members have attended StFX. Evelyn’s sister Gertrude Mooney ’65 also generously contributed to the scholarship fund. StFX President Dr. MacDonald was deeply moved by the gift. “The Xaverian Fund is one of my key priorities as President and the generosity of the Morris family helps us get that
much closer to the $50 million dollar goal, but also, the Morris gift, represents what StFX was built upon—core values of community, assisting others whoever they may be, strong faith and love of family, and finally, the pursuit of a quality education,” he says. Ms. Bilek says the scholarship idea originated with brother Kevin ’87, who is on the StFX Board of Governors. He was inspired by the example of board chair Mark Wallace who recently donated $1 million to the Xaverian Fund. Warren Chiasson ‘57 was recently featured in the pages of the Daily Hampshire Gazette in a glowing concert review, “This vibraphonist plays with old-school flair.” Mr. Chiasson is a master vibraphonist with an impressive resume which has included stints with George Shearing, Chet Baker, Roberta Flack, B.B. King and others. “Born and raised in Nova Scotia, he was an early pioneer in the four-mallet technique, in which a musician holds two mallets in each hand, gripped like Xs, allowing the person to create richer harmonic movement, like a pianist rather than a horn player. He headed to New York City in 1959 and almost immediately began playing with George Shearing — in fact Chiasson’s first gig with him, at the Newport Jazz Festival was on July 2, 1959,” the article says.

NATIONAL DINNER 2016 JEAN CHRÉTIEN DELIVERS KEYNOTE AT SOLD-OUT STFX NATIONAL DINNER Dinner celebrates leadership, invests in leaders of tomorrow The magic that is StFX—a national university with a focus on outstanding academics, leadership and social responsibility— was celebrated in Toronto on Oct. 19, 2016 as a sold-out crowd of leaders from across North America joined together for the 2016 StFX National Dinner. The night invested too in the leaders of tomorrow. The dinner, held at Arcadian Court on Bay Street and broadcast live on StFX.ca, in part served as a fundraising celebration in support of the Xaverian Fund for Scholarships and Bursaries. Canada’s 20th Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Jean Chrétien, highlighted the evening with an engaging keynote address, followed by remarks from the evening’s host, the Hon. Frank McKenna ’70, Deputy Chair, TD Bank Financial Group. Actress and journalist Nancy Regan ’88 served as master of ceremonies. “When Frank (McKenna) asked me to come to talk about education, I said I will go,” Mr. Chrétien said. “Education was everything when I was prime minister,”he said.“Education in our family was everything. So tonight you’re contributing to that cause,”he said.“I want to congratulate you for doing what you’re doing,” he said on StFX’s Xaverian Fund. After a podium address, Mr. Chrétien had a relaxed conversation, taking questions from the audience. The evening brought together leaders in business, the arts, athletics, government, higher education and more. It also included two special members of the Xaverian family, 2016 Rio Olympians, marathoner Eric Gillis ’04 ’06 and Rugby Sevens star Ghislaine Landry ’10, who were called to the stage for a presentation from StFX Athletics Director Leo MacPherson ’89.

Ring Finders locate lost X-Ring at Arisaig Beach
My son Connor ’11 came home to Antigonish this summer for a visit. One beautiful day he and his girlfriend went to Arisaig beach for a swim, but he came home upset because his precious X-Ring had slipped off in the ocean and disappeared into the sandy bottom. We all went back to the beach the next day and when we arrived we found that the people at the beach already knew about the lost X-Ring and were eager to help us in the search. One alumnus had even offered a reward before we arrived, but we had no luck finding the ring. Connor returned to Calgary without his ring. My wife and I went back a couple of more times, even taking a rake to the sand, but with no success. When we were looking on the internet for search ideas we came across an international organization under the website “ringfinders.com” and were surprised that they had one member in Nova Scotia in Amherst. I emailed a lady named Wanda. She asked many questions about the water’s depth etc., and surprisingly she did not know what an X-Ring looked like. She agreed to make the two-hour drive from Amherst to Arisaig and we met on a Sunday at the beach at low tide. Wanda and her sidekick Kevin arrived with two heavy duty metal detectors, headphones, hip waders and specially designed metal mesh shovels from Ukraine. I felt like they were on a mission. After only 15 minutes of searching I heard Kevin yell, “I got it.” He found it in water that was at hip level. It was buried deep under 10 inches of sand, but was now glistening in his special shovel with the X proudly facing out. After a few photos and some back slapping I expressed my gratitude to the “Ring Finders” and happily paid their modest travel expenses (plus reward). Cameron’s Jewellery kindly polished the ring back to its original lustre and we are glad that it will be back on Connor’s finger . Wanda posted a video on You Tube as well about our adventure. We are very grateful to the “Ring Finders” for finding Connor’s X-Ring and hope they can help other people in the future. Lorne Deering
