THE StFX COMMITMENT To exceptional teaching StFX employs full-time faculty, almost all with PhDs. Why does this matter? It means you’ll learn directly from professors—accomplished scholars and experts in their fields, not teaching assistants.

To incredible research opportunities If you believe in learning by doing, you’ll love the research opportunities available to StFX students. StFX student researchers often work alongside their professors on real-world projects and enjoy opportunities that other universities typically offer only at the graduate level. You’ll gain first-hand experience that gives you an advantage after graduation!

To foster outstanding students Our faculty and staff want you to excel. They’re here to support, mentor and guide you along your path of discovery. They won’t just know you by name—they’ll take an active role in your success. It’s this personalized experience that will make your time at StFX so exceptional.

SERVICE LEARNING: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING UNLEASHED At StFX, learning is not confined to classrooms. Service Learning is a program that expands the learning environment, connecting students with community leaders outside of the classroom to solve real-world challenges. Service Learning gives you an opportunity to apply what you’re learning, while you’re learning it— and develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of your knowledge in the process. If you believe learning should have a real-world focus, what better place to study than the university that pioneered service learning in Canada? There are many ways to get involved in service learning at StFX: · Immersion Service Learning: students take part in intensive service learning projects in both national and international locations. These opportunities often have a strong social justice and community development focus. Most recently, students have travelled to Peru, Guatemala, Belize, Grenada, Mexico, Cuba and Ottawa. ·

Course-based Service Learning: enroll in on-campus courses that offer service learning assignments, typically with a local community partner. These partners are often non-profit organizations that provide important services for the area.

·

Service Learning Society: StFX students are so passionate about service learning that they often devote their own time to service learning partners and projects. All students are welcome to sign up for this extra-curricular society that organizes a number of initiatives in local communities.

A Tradition of Reaching Out You’ll have plenty of opportunities for international pursuits. Through international internships, service learning experiences, international research partnerships, community outreach initiatives, and individual departmental agreements, our students and professors make meaningful contributions at home and abroad. Exchange programs and other international study possibilities can also be tailored to your own interests depending on your program and year of study. The Coady International Institute The world-renowned Coady International Institute is one of the most tangible expressions of the StFX spirit and commitment to social awareness and global participation. A centre of excellence in community-based development since 1959, Coady International Institute was established as an extension of StFX’s tradition of service to society. In the past 50 years, more than 7,000 community and development leaders from 130 countries have graduated from the Coady Institute’s intensive professional development education programs. When I think back to my time as a student, I know one thing defined my experience more than any other: StFX’s Service Learning program

When I arrived at StFX in 2010, I thought I’d maybe want to be a teacher. I floated along in my courses, and while I was successful, I did not transform. The turning point came in my third year when I was accepted to an Immersion Service Learning program in Guatemala. This experience had an intense social justice focus, which threw me out of my comfort zone (in a good way!) and challenged me to think critically about my role as a global citizen. Coming back from this trip, my eyes had been opened. I searched for other experiences that would challenge me in unique ways. Thankfully, at StFX there is no shortage of these opportunities. I took courses in psychology and women’s and gender studies, I went to lectures on social justice issues, and I joined a local feminist choir. Eventually, in my last year of studies I worked as a Service Learning Student Leader, alongside incredible community change makers who constantly encouraged me to view the world in a critical way. In this job, I was really able to flex my leadership muscle. I was challenged to step outside my comfort zone, and saw first-hand the incredible benefits of Service Learning placements for both students and community partners. Now, after many transformational Service Learning experiences – and graduating with an honours degree in chemistry – I am preparing to attend medical school. So that’s my story, but what’s my message? It strikes me that if StFX’s Service Learning program hadn’t shown me my potential as a leader, who would have? I am smart and capable, but because I’m introverted and lacked confidence until quite recently, I may have slipped through the cracks. While I was drawn to leadership opportunities when I arrived at StFX, it was Service Learning that proved to me what I’m really capable of. If that’s not the goal of university, then what is?

The experience of living in residence at StFX is one that will stay with you and shape your life forever. And, you couldn’t live in a more beautiful place! StFX has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in our residential and academic buildings, creating spaces where our students want to live, learn and play. Over the course of the year StFX has been my home, far, far, away from home. Moving into a foreign place that uses a language I almost never spoke was overwhelming, but not for long. I moved into a residence with 40 other young men and hardly understood what they said. But after a week, we became a big family. Friends are a big part of my life here. Living in a small residence, I got to know not only the names and faces

I never saw the actual campus at all when I decided to come to StFX. I took a leap of faith, not knowing what was ahead. What I can say is that my experience here is heavy, too heavy not to share.

of my fellow housemates, but also who they are. They always encourage me to be who I am and to express it. I feel welcome and secure, and that creates a great study environment. With small classes and accessible professors, I am building a strong academic foundation. I can confidently say that all my professors know me and I frequently visit them in their office if I have any questions or just to seek advice. Here, there is never any shortage of things to get involved in. There are many societies, ranging from sports to even consciousness study. And, if you don’t find any that suit your interests, you are encouraged to create your own. At StFX, there are tons of opportunities. During the year I joined a few societies and made the most of it. Many of my friends work for the university in various jobs and there are lots of co-op and exchange programs. This past summer I did research for the physics department. I find it really helped me prepare for the years to come. To me, StFX is the door to an endless world of possibilities, a place to fully utilize my potential and push my limits.

2018-07-24 10:18 PM

Stepping onto campus that first day, despite warring sentiments of trepidation and excitement, I felt an overwhelming feeling of gratefulness. I was about to live a dream I had chased since childhood. But perhaps more importantly, I was stepping into an opportunity for which I knew those before me had fought and sacrificed. My attending StFX went beyond me. It was an achievement for both my family and my community.

The moment I stepped onto the StFX campus, I recognized it as a place that was vastly different from anywhere I had been in my life. I grew up in a big city, in a very proud and close-knit immigrant community. Being raised among families who (like mine) each had stories of overcoming hardship meant there were certain lessons my friends and I were taught very early on. Perhaps the one most engrained in our minds was the importance of having an education, a core value instilled in me as early as I can recall.

Since arriving that first day, I’ve found opportunities for activism and advocacy on campus, and through this work I know my perspective is being heard and used to spark ongoing change. I first discovered this in the Social Justice Colloquium, a program that fosters critical thinking skills. The SJC connected me to professors who were not only personally invested in their subjects, but would also stand beside me during marches and protests. Through student societies I also learned about Mi’kmaq (Indigenous) and African Nova Scotian communities, without whom StFX would not have been established. I was even able to apply the knowledge I gained on campus to the world, through an opportunity in Haiti with StFX’s Frank McKenna Centre for Leadership. There, I was taught about sustainable development by Haiti’s next generation of young leaders. Shortly after my return I became the first student to present at StFX’s Hive for Feminist Research, where I presented my directed study about feminist and youth leadership in Haiti. I was even able to help make history with a student group that successfully lobbied the StFX Students’ Union Council to include representatives for students of Aboriginal and African descent. In these ways, just as those before me created a path for my feet to follow, I am able to use the opportunities I’ve found at StFX to leave my footprints as a guide for those coming after me.

THE POWER OF THE X-RING A TRUE SYMBOL OF LEADERSHIP, SUCCESS, EXCELLENCE, AND COMMUNITY.

The StFX X-Ring represents your unique journey from student to alumni. It’s a symbol of your achievements; a symbol that forever binds you to the Xaverian community. After convocation, you will officially join Canada’s strongest alumni network, a community of more than 40,000 strong who proudly call StFX home. It’s a community that will be there to help and support you as you continue toward your next goal. So much so, the President of StFX’s Alumni Association famously challenges graduates to ‘test the network and discover the comfort and openness of the Xaverian family.’ Each year you’ll watch senior students earn their X-Rings on December 3, Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier. Soon, you too will participate in the X-Ring ceremony and join the generations of StFX graduates who came before you.
