2019-20 STFX IMPACT REPORT A CELEBRATION OF XAVERIAN GENEROSITY
A Message from Murray Kyte,
A Message from Wendy Langley,
Vice-President, Advancement
Director of Development
This year’s Donor Impact Report comes at a time of tremendous change and uncertainty. From the global health crisis to the senseless events in Portapique, NS that claimed the lives of 22 victims (including StFX alumni Lisa McCully ’13 and Alanna Jenkins ’05, as well as Cst. Heidi Stevenson, who grew up in Antigonish County and whose mother is a former StFX employee), these are exceptionally challenging times for us all. Throughout them, the global StFX community has come together in support and solidarity. I have never been prouder to wear to my father’s X-Ring. In the pages that follow, you will find stories that demonstrate the generosity and goodness of the Xaverian community. They represent what many alumni have done over the years and are continuing to do, without which StFX would not exist. Since 2017, we have challenged our graduates to adopt the “every alumni, any amount, every year” giving mentality. This year, we thank you again for your gifts, both financial and non-monetary. Your acts of kindness have given us great hope and supported those at the heart of our institution—our students. But our work is not done—we still need your help. Alumni, I know you carry our Xaverian values with you wherever you go. I encourage you to take that shared sense of community and passion for social justice and continue to pay-it-forward for the next generation of proud StFX graduates. Together, with time, strength, and perseverance, and the hope of better days ahead, the uncertainties that we are facing will diminish. Some things, like the Xaverian spirit, never change.
If you are reading this, chances are you are doing so from your laptop, smartphone, or another personal device.
TABLE OF CONTENTS 2 Messages from Murray Kyte and Wendy Langley
Because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we are offering this year’s edition of the StFX Donor Impact Report exclusively online. The decision to transition the 2019-2020 edition of our publication from hardcopy to a fully digital format is one small example of the many ways that COVID-19 has required us to adapt in response to unprecedented change.
4 Infinite Impact: Remembering Dr. John T. Sears 8 Father Stan: X-Spirit Embodied 10 The Art of Giving: Canadian Editorial Cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon 12 The Gift of a Legacy: Sullivan Family Plants a Seed
Indeed, things look a little different this year for us all. But the Xaverian spirit – a culmination of the generosity and kindness of all our students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other friends in the StFX community – remains steadfast.

This year’s delivery method may have changed, but you can still expect the same uplifting celebration of Xaverian generosity from the stories within. From a profile on Father Stan, one of the most recognized and beloved figures on-campus to coverage of this year’s Day of Giving campaign, which raised over $300,000 for students impacted by COVID-19, I am pleased – and honoured – to share these stories with you.

As you flip through the pages of this year’s Donor Impact Report—or more accurately, scroll and click, I hope that these endearing tales of Xaverians from the past and present motivate you and remind you of better days to come. Undoubtedly, that was their effect on me, and I trust they will do the same for you. Happy Reading! Kind Regards,

He just loved it—it was a part of him.” She recalls many family dinners with her father still dressed in his shirt and tie—because he was going back to work after they ate. Or, he would sit in his red corduroy chair with the family dog on his arm, consuming Time and Macleans and The Chronicle Herald—any and all news publications he could find. He was a lifelong student.
