new year and a new stage line up! St George’s Theatre is a stunning venue in the heart of Great Yarmouth and has recently been refurbished to facilitate a state of the art entertainment and private hire venue capable of holding up to 300 people. As we say goodbye to 2014 cumulating in the fabulous professional pantomime Aladdin, we look ahead to 2015, which promises to be our best year yet. Well-known names include Basil Brush, John Challis with his show ‘Only Fools and Boycie’ as well as the Merry Opera Company’s performance of ‘The Barber of Seville’ with fast-witted humour and famous songs. We also see the fascinating production of ‘The Honey Man’ a compelling story of growing up and growing old, plus our own St George’s Theatre Company return with the classic stage version of ‘The Munsters’. Our monthly comedy night makes a return every second Thursday of the month. We continue our of season of live screened theatre from the ‘National Theatre Live’ and the ‘Royal Shakespeare Company’ with Treasure Island and Swan Lake among the screenings. DV8 Physical Theatre’s bold new production depicting the moving story of one man’s struggle to survive. For this powerful new production, DV8 Physical Theatre Artistic Director Lloyd Newson began by conducting frank interviews with more than 50 men about love and sex. One of his interviewees was John. Now John’s story has been transformed into an intense theatrical experience that charts his years of crime, drug use and living on the margins of society.
Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy delights in championing and then unravelling an unrealistic vow, mischievously suggesting that the study of the opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic endeavours. Only at the end of the play is the merriment curtailed as the lovers agree to submit to a period apart, unaware that the world around them is about to be utterly transformed by the war to end all wars.

Umberto Giordano’s Andrew Chénier (1896) presents a fictionalised account of the last years of the French Terror in 1794. It is the greatest of Giordano’s operas and shows why Puccini sometimes feared Giordano as a rival. Taking the starring role of Chénier, with its three marvellous arias, is Jonas Kaufmann, Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings the role of Chénier’s beloved Maddalena and Serbian baritone Željko Lučić stars as Carlo Gérard.
The TestostaTones are one of the busiest and well-travelled acapella groups in the UK. They have sung at such venues as Hampton Court Palace, Alnwick Cast (Harry Potter), The Savoy Hotel, The Royal Festival Hall, Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey), the O2, The Shard, Windsor Castle, The Barbican and the HMS Belfast…and on Friday 13th February, they will be performing live at St George’s Theatre and performing to the public for the first time in over six years. The modern take on Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” on Broadway is a revival that adds intriguing elements of racial disparity to the typical tale involving the two star-crossed lovers. Condola Rashad and Orlando Bloom stars in this contemporary take on the Shakespeare’s classic. The director does not concentrate on love too much but on its importance in the current world and society.
Wagner’s first masterpiece explores the themes of damnation and redemption that would fascinate the composer throughout his career. In this tale of a captain forced to sail the seas for eternity unless released by the faithful love of a good woman, and the lonely girl who longs to save him, Wagner created two unforgettable characters operating near the limits of human emotion. Admired for his Wagner interpretations with the CBSO and at Bayreuth, Andris Nelsons returns to steer the orchestra through Wagner’s stormy score.

You may think you know Jungle Book but Indigo Moon Theatre bring you a wonderful story inspired by the poetry and spirit of Rudyard Kiplings original books. Fearless and free, Mowgli the “man-cub” finds fun and friendship , despite learning to live by the Law of the Jungle. Mowgli’s daring adventures in the daring adventures in the dangerous world he inhabits are brought to life by Indigo Moon theatre with inventive shadow theatre, original music and colourful digital projection.
The Night at the Musicals team are back this time concentrating on the great music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein have been called the greatest musical writing partnership of the 20th century and their work earned them a stunning 34 Tony awards and 15 Oscars. With classic songs including ‘Oh What a Beautiful morning’, ‘Some enchanted evening’ and ‘There’s no business like show business’. It will be a night to really enjoy everything that is great about Broadway and the West End.

The Merry Opera Company returns to Great Yarmouth with Rossini’s great masterpiece of comic opera, fizzing with musical brilliance, bold humour and famous tunes. Presented in the house style ‘with charm, energy and wit’ (Opera Now), we follow the escapades of the quick witted and irrepressible Figaro as he untangles the fortunes of a beautiful imprisoned heiress, her greedy and lecherous guardian and a love-struck Count.
Shakespeare’s comic romance plays out amidst the brittle high spirits of a postwar house party, as youthful passions run riot, lovers are deceived and happiness is threatened – before peace ultimately wins out. Christopher Luscombe directs the second of Shakespeare’s matching pair of comedies that rejoice in our capacity to find love in the most unlikely places. Better known as Much Ado About Nothing, the play is performed under the title Love’s Labour’s Won, a name possibly attributed to it during Shakespeare’s lifetime.

Rebelling against her aristocratic family heritage and preoccupied by her parents’ divorce, she Skypes And texts her way through her relationships, full of anger and anxiety as she contemplates an uncertain future.
Swan Lake, surely the greatest of all Romantic ballets, is the captivating story of a beautiful woman transformed into a swan, and a heart-rending tribute to the power of love. Swan Lake is a perfect synthesis of choreography and music and, though Tchaikovsky did not live to see it become a success, his first ballet score is now synonymous with ballet itself, inspiring generations of dancers and crossing over into popular culture.

Dress to impress as a T-Bird or Pink Lady for this sing-a-long night fun with the students of Rydell High. Relive the classic story of love between Danny and Sandy and sing to the hits such as ‘Grease lighting’ ‘Sandy’ and ‘Summer Loving’. Our bar will be open throughtout the performance and we will have some guest performers dropping in and spot prizes for the most impressive audience members.
The Elephant Man is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A horribly deformed young man, who has been a freak attraction in travelling side shows, is found abandoned and helpless and is admitted for observation to Whitechapel, a prestigious London Hospital. Under the care of a famous young doctor, who educates him and introduces him to London society, Merrick changes from a sensational object of pity to the urbane and witty favourite of the aristocracy and literati. But his belief that he can become a man like any other is a dream never to be realised.

Eastern Angles return with their tour of Oysters. A tale of sex, boat-building and bivalve molluscs. Mo has just turned fifty and is busy restoring an oyster dredger recovered from an Essex riverbed. Helping him bring the boat back to life is Kasey, a young intern with a chip on her shoulder. When a piece of Mo’s beloved dredger goes missing their lives are up-ended and the past floats to the surface. A new play by Ivan Cutting based on oral history interviews developed as part of the Pioneer Sailing Trust Land & Sea project.
Basil Brush is a star with an outstanding ability to entertain and make people of all ages laugh and smile. He’s cheeky, irreverent, charming, naughty, quick-witted, scheming and foxy, but at the same time he’s kind, caring and affectionate. Basil has celebrated over 50 years in entertainment and The Basil Brush Show on BBC TV has been seen by millions of viewers all over the globe from 1968 through to today. The show was BAFTA nominated and voted best comedy show on TV Now.

Thursday 2nd April, 7.30pm Featuring Colin Dexter’s eponymous sleuth, this original play was written for the stage by Alma Cullen, author of several episodes of the original TV series which starred the late John Thaw. This intriguing incarnation of the unassuming, stoically-reserved Inspector takes its cue firmly from theatrical history. Following the death on stage of the actress playing Ophelia, Inspector Morse comes out of the audience and turns the stage into a fully fledged murder scene to help find the killer.

If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues who include her first mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry. In northern France in the Second World War, three children encounter a lost American soldier in the ruins of their village. Decades later, the soldier’s camera is unearthed and his grandson tries to solve the mystery of the photographs inside. He discovers a world of childhood, imagination and hidden courage, as fragments of war explode into the present day.
Set in the 1830s in the supposedly peaceful village of Burnham Market in North Norfolk the play will explore the story of Catherine Frary and Frances Billings, who were the last women to be hanged in Norfolk and whose execution was the last public, double execution in England. Frary and Billings were found guilty of several murders by administering arsenic to their hapless victims, this lethal substance was frequently disguised in dumplings.

The annual Great Yarmouth Beer and Cider Festival returns to St. Georges in May with over 50 different ales and ciders from a wide selection of brewers and cider makers, large and small. The fine selection of brews will be accompanied by live music and entertainment plus great food served in the pavilion over the weekend long event. The festival will be open for a number of lunch and evening sessions starting with Thursday 14th May at (5pm to 11.00pm), a lunch time (11.00am to 3.00pm) and evening (5.00pm to 11.00pm) sessions on both Friday 15th and Saturday 16th, finishing with a lunch time session (12.00pm to 3.00pm) on Sunday 17th May. Advance tickets are available for all sessions with the exception of the Sunday lunch time session. Entry prices vary from £3.00 to £5.00 depending on session. Admission is to over 18s only – proof of age may be requested. No children or babies at any session. Last admissions 30 minutes before closing time.

Born in Burnham Market in 1966, Mark Moorhouse attended Glebe House School, Hunstanton , then Gresham’s School in Holt. He went on to read modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge where he also received organ lessons from Peter Le Huray. After graduating, he spent a year at the university of Pavia in Italy, where he taught English to Science students and nearly three years in Paris where he taught English to business people., particularly at the computer company “Bull”. During this time he had lessons in early organ music with Lorenzo Ghielmi in Milan and Odile Bailleux in Paris. Tickets: £5
