The Head Teacher’s Statement
Welcome to this year’s edition of “The Dragon” For many of you this is now an annual, much loved publication and for some this will be your first edition but for everyone ,I am sure, it will make superb reading and allow you to recapture all those moments that the children have enjoyed during the school year. Along with “The Dragon Times” this allows you a snapshot of the activities which make up the rich and varied life of St George’s. Looking through I find it difficult to believe that so much can be fitted into such a short time. Congratulations to the staff who make all this possible and also at this point I would like to express my thanks to all those who have made the production of such a high quality publication possible The most obvious change to St George’s this academic year has been the completion of the Barthel Building, which has given the school the capacity to have its own catering facility for the first time. The menus are varied and the food, as I’m sure you know is delicious. They even managed fish and chips on St George’s day! This facility has been further expanded to include the provision of breakfast and after school coffee sessions enabling children and parents to have somewhere to wait whilst siblings take part in after school activities. Many of the staff have taken the opportunity to eat lunch with the children and this has been enjoyed by the students. The building has also enabled us to expand the instrumental music programme and the class music programme itself to include music technology for the older students. I only wish I could have enjoyed using Garage Band as part of my school music lessons! The now traditional parts of the year here at St George’s such as the Art Exhibition and Book week are again featured in the year book alongside new additions, which we hope will become annual, such as Maths Quest and COBIS Games . As is usual at this time of the year we will say goodbye to a number of our families who will leave St George’s and Luxembourg. We wish them well and hope there will always be a special place in their hearts for the time they spent here and we hope that they will keep in touch. For those of you who are returning in the Autumn we hope you will have a wonderful summer with family and friends and look forward to you helping us welcome all the new families into St George’s in September. All that remains is for me to say enjoy “The Dragon 2012.” Heather Dusbury, Head Teacher
Early
Years
A year full of choices.
The
preparation of the article for the yearbook is recognised as a good point to reflect on the progress of the year, our dilemma is which of the high points in Early Years should we focus on? During the year we have looked at the various topics, Ourselves was during the autumn term as the children settled into school. We followed this with Clothes and then during the winter term Sand and Water and our final topic is Changes which begins to prepare the children for the transition to the following school year. But where do we think we have made the most progress? It has to be in the development of the children’s self confidence and their independent skills. There have been small quiet moments of indi-
vidual personal achievements, as when a child stopped the class at carpet time to insist that they all watched him fasten the zip on his jacket, or on the grand scale the Reception and Early Years achievement of performing the Christmas show, with two performances on the same day. Through the year it has been noticeable how independent the children have become. At the beginning of the year we encourage the children to make choices, these include which learning area to work in, which adult to work with, what time to have their snack, what activity to take part in, do they need to go to the toilet, who to sit with at lunch time, if they are going outside do they need to wear their coat etc (although choice does not apply in the very cold weather)..the choices seem endless! The children are also encouraged to deal positively with consequences if they find that they have made wrong choices! The children are now so competent in making choices that they occasionally very confidently attempt to guide staff with some of these choices...

Reception
What a busy year it has been for Reception this year!
The children have had so much fun learning
and sharing fun experiences together with their classmates and teachers. They have travelled the world from the comfort of our classrooms, sailing the seven seas in pirate ships, flying aeroplanes, and driving trains, exploring jungles and so much more! Book week was an exciting time for us all. Everyone really enjoyed listening to lots of different poems and they even had a go at writing some of their very own. We were lucky enough to have a visit form the author Jane Clarke who came to our classes and read us some of her stories. They were very funny and made everyone laugh lots! To end book week we had a fancy dress day where children and teachers had the chance to get dressed up as our favourite characters from books. Starting swimming lessons has also been one of the highlights of the year. With the majority of children discussing and looking forward to swimming since September, we knew it would be a favourite. Everyone has so much fun and are developing their physical skills as well as their confidence in the water. We have all had a fantastic year in Reception and have made lots of new friends as well as saying goodbye to a few. The children have all worked and played hard all year and have developed huge amounts of confidence and skills throughout the year which will prepare them for the exciting new challenges to come in Year 1.

Year
As little seedlings, we started our Year 1 season by planting the seeds of the knowledge and skills to be cultivated throughout the year. We mulled, questioned and researched important subjects: Do cars have babies? Will this material stay strong when it gets wet? Do trees breathe? Are robots alive? Where do magnets come from? Do seeds need water? When is it snack time? We set about digging for answers and found many interesting, amazing things along the way! Embedding our roots and spreading them wide to make a firm foundation, we began to sprout more creativity and imagination. With a sprinkle of numeracy and a shower of literacy to bring it all together, we were able to nurture our talents. As a blossoming bunch of independent individuals we grew stronger and branched out. Our skills have entwined and we adapted to our environment, learning to work closely together. (Can you guess what topic inspired us yet?) We have had a productive year so far. As summer approaches and the fruits of our knowledge ripen, we know that our core social skills and values will continue to support and guide our learning on into the growing seasons to come.

Year 2 have been working as hard as can be,
We’ve had lots of fun as I’m sure you can see. From finding out how to keep our bodies healthy and strong, To testing our senses – some smells were quite strong! We’ve learned all about Electricity; we can make circuits. We’ve danced the day away in PE – we know how to work it! We know about food groups, about meats and cereals, About growing plants and changing materials. Our role plays have taught us about the world of employment, We have found out jobs can be full of enjoyment. How do other children get around town? Well we interviewed them, and wrote it all down. Global warming is what our winter performance was about, If you missed it, you really missed out! We’ve been to the farmers market and had a visit from a baby. Do you wish you are in Year 2 maybe? We know what hard works all about!
Will Year 3 be as fun? We can’t wait to find out!

Year 3, what a wonderful year we have had! We have investigated what goes on in the rainforest and found out ways to save the environment. Then we travelled back in time to find out about The Romans and enjoyed a Roman banquet when the History Man came to visit and thank goodness he didn’t bring any dormice for us to eat and there were no visits to the Vomitarium! During book week, we learned all about different poetry and even had a world famous author come into our classes and help us write a poem! WOW! We ate pizza and watched a movie, what a night that was! Then we said goodbye to Mrs Fyfe who went on Maternity leave. We were sorry to see her go but we welcomed Miss Barker. We then travelled back even further in time to the Prehistoric age to discover the dinosaurs! Fortunately, no one got eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex and we found out what caused their extinction. We had an excellent time on St George’s Day, we ate lots of yummy sweets and played lots of fun games. The house days over the year have been wonderful too, competing against the other houses in many different events. For science we visited the kitchen in the canteen, it was huge! We went on a residential trip to Chevetogne, in Belgium and had an absolutely fantastic time in the forest. 3B, 3L and 3S you have been excellent, thank you very much for all your hard work this year from Miss Barker, Mrs Fyfe, Miss Lawther and Mrs Skinner. We look forward to welcoming you to St George’s!

On History Day, we learnt to make a wax tablet which was similar to the ones Roman children would have used. How to make a wax tablet 1. Get some wax and put it in a boiling pot 2. Make a wax tablet by sticking lolly sticks around a thick piece of card 3. When the wax in the pot has melted, pour it into the frame 4. Wait for it to dry 5. While it is drying, get another lolly stick 6. When the wax is dry... 7. You have a wax tablet and you can use your lolly stick for writing on it!

Roman citizens had lots of jobs in their time. Romans were very clever indeed, they made lamps and made pots. They also had very strong and talented soldiers. They had big shields and strong swords and armour. People around the world knew all their battles and their country. People around the world came to see Rome to see their shows and stuff. On History Day we made clay tables and lamps. We made pots and cups. We had a feast because we won against Boudicca’s army with 10 000 soldiers by listening to orders. Boudicca’s army didn’t have order. We were Roman merchants and we made Roman mosaics, Roman paintings and writing with feathers. Romans drank wine. They ate peacocks brains on toast. They drank snails mashed in milk and ate sticky Roman cheesecake and dormice.

Year
Year 4 have been extremely active in their learning this year, so the best way to explain some of the things they have done is to write a long, long list of verbs!
Pulling– we pulled many objects in our study of friction, including each other in tugs of war! Pushing– we pushed a wide range of objects across countless rough and smooth surfaces, including bicycles in Plaine! Sliding – we slid cars down slopes, and ourselves across ice! Rowing– we rowed (imaginary) Viking longboats across the playground in search of treasures. Singing– we sang Christmas carols in the Place d’Armes, and know that thev rest of the world is in a huff, coz they cannae sing like us!
Building– we built models of water systems in
houses and we build electric circuits that can flash, buzz and spin propellers; we built vehicles that could speed, fight and
Running– we ran so that other people in the world might have clean water to drink. Melting– we melted chocolate – in our bare hands! Feeding – we know how “nice” fish food smells from our aquarium! Insulating– we insulated model houses to show how they can keep warm. Eating– we ate like Vikings, drank like Vikings, sang like Vikings, but luckily, didn’t smell like Vikings! Helping– we know that one of the best ways to learn is to help each other! Working– working? No way! We were too busy doing all the rest of these things! Learning– that we did, all of the time: it’s what we did best! Adding– 4HA + 4G + 4HE = 3 Amazing Classes! fall over!
Well done to all of the children: you have been a brilliant group with your effort, care, helpfulness, interest, enjoyment, and most of all, kindness!

Year
Time flies when you are having fun, and this year has just sped by for
the pupils and staff of year 5.
Our first highlight was the Science Festival, where we watched a superb water show with lots of H20 Science tricks. The festival also gave us the opportunity to make electrical circuits, create secret codes and explore how our ears work. Another fantastic experience was having the opportunity to carry out an investigation using Bunsen Burners in the secondary Science labs. Not only did we observe water changing state and explain how this happened, we also found out what a lab looks like and how to use a Bunsen Burner safely. History day was a fantastic way to experience what life might have been like in ancient Greece. We produced necklaces, medicines, oil lamps and much, much more. In the afternoon we entertained one another with recitations, dances and dramas accompanied by some typical ancient Greek snacks. Entertaining others has been something we have very much enjoyed doing this year; with performing country dances to the visitors on St George’s day and with the acting and singing involved in our performance of Roald Dahl’s ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. As well as developing our academic skills, we have been working on our personal learning goals and learning how to how to be resilient when we have difficulties, to become more effective communicators and how to be respectful members of the school. It’s been a fantastic year and we would like to thank all of year 5 for their hard work and their parents for their support.

Art exhibition
The
annual art exhibition was held in May this year and featured art work from all the pupils in the school from EY’s to Year 9. We believe that learning should be accessible to everyone, with every child able to find the tools and opportunities they need to achieve their full potential within an environment that is fun and supportive. This philosophy is at the heart of everything that we do. This year’s creative writing for the Art Exhibition was based on Diego Rivera’s painting ‘El Vendedor de Alcatraces’. The stunning display was created by all pupils from Early Years to Year 6 doing various pieces of writing, pictures and discussions. The painting is used as a stimulus for this writing and articles included were poetry, newspaper articles, diary entries, stories and recreating the painting in 3d format. Visitors to the exhibition were impressed with the high quality of work produced by all pupils and enjoyed the varying inspirations that this painting had produced from the children.
