Recognition of I/GCSE • International General Certificate of Secondary Education (The old O Levels!) • Universally recognised • Recognised in EU as equivalent to national matriculation qualifications, (International Baccalaureate MYP) • Challenging and rigorous


What are I/GCSE courses? • • • • • •

Taken in over 125 countries with a choice of over 60 subjects Challenging and rigorous Allow for breadth of study and specialisation Natural progression onto A levels 2 year courses over years 10 & 11 Can be coursework or examination only based


Our I/GCSE courses • We offer a range of 4 ‘Compulsory’ subjects and 4 ‘Option’ subjects • A total of 10 examinations can be gained • Graded A* - U, with A* to C, seen as ‘good’ pass marks • 5 A* to C grades need to be achieved for progression into the Sixth form • English & Maths are expected to be passed at C or above and are required for most, if not all AS/A2 Levels • Grade B and above in a subject is required for progression onto the AS Level course • Entry into Sixth form could be 4 grade Bs plus English & mathematics.


Transition Management • Help and guidance to select the right option subjects • Staff will discuss with pupils and parents the suitability of the option subjects chosen • Taster lesson for subjects not on the Key Stage 3 curriculum. (19th & 20th March) • Stand alone Study Skills programme • Early identification of any issues • Progress check in first 6 weeks. Time to reflect and decide if the course is suitable • Parental calls and emails

A choice of 4 out of 12 possible subject areas The opportunity to study both French & German 6 humanities subjects offered The opportunity to study art, drama, music & PE For those with an interest in business; business studies, economics & ICT can all be selected


Courses offered for September 2014 Compulsory subjects English language and literature. • IGCSE with Cambridge International Examinations • These run together and 2, I/GCSEs awarded • IGCSE English Language and IGCSE English Literature are taught within the same timetable slot • Some non native English speakers will do IGCSE English Language only and not IGCSE English Literature. This constitutes just one IGCSE


Courses offered for September 2014 Compulsory subjects Mathematics All students will take a GCSE (or IGCSE) in Mathematics Students will take either the foundation or higher paper The higher paper will allow progression onto the AS / A2 courses • The top set will do an additional Mathematics qualification at IGCSE level • • • •


Courses offered for September 2014 Compulsory subjects • Science – double award. • All students will take the IGCSE double award in Science • The course includes Biology, Chemistry and Physics components • The double award is worth 2 IGCSEs • Students will take either the core or the extended paper. • The extended double award enables students to progress onto any (or all) of the sciences AS/A2 level • Majority of English schools offer the double award • Students will be taught, where possible, the 3 disciplines of Biology, Chemistry & Physics by specialised teachers


Courses offered for September 2014 Compulsory subjects Languages • One CORE language, has to be taken • German is also offered as an option so students wishing to study both languages will select French as their core • ASDAN


Courses offered for September 2014 CoPE (The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) Qualification at Levels 1 & 2, widely used by mainstream establishments for students aged 13-16, within an option system Approximately 120 hours of work is Expected for this GCSE-sized qualification

Courses offered for September 2014 ASDAN CoPE levels 1 & 2 - Assessment Units • By building up a Portfolio of Evidence as they complete the various challenges, students develop their skills in the six CoPE units. Assessment units: • Working with Others • Improving own Learning & Performance • Problem Solving • Planning & Carrying out Research • Communication through Discussion

Entry Requirements • You have a strong interest in the subject. • You are good at it and committed to improvement. • It is required for A Level, then the university course you want to follow. (If you already know what or where you want to

study after A Levels, it is a good idea to look up the websites of the universities to see if they require certain subjects).

• NOT because your friends are doing it, you like the teacher or think its an ‘easy’ option.


When to choose? • Forms will be given to the students this evening. • They must be returned to Mrs Thomas by Monday 31st March 2014. • Talk to your teachers, ask about the course content and ask for their advice. • For subjects not offered at KS3, economics , business, media & psychology ‘taster’ lessons will be given before you hand in your choices. • External candidates should complete application form from Mrs Tranter.
