“Working with St George’s allows me to combine my passion for glass and acoustics, to work in a new exciting and invigorating creative partnership. This is the first time I have created an artwork to support a fundraising campaign. I cannot wait to get started” www.lukejerram.com

Building a Sound Future

“I am delighted to provide the musical source for the sound wave. It is especially fitting that the chosen piece is my 2nd Étude which I played on my first visit to St George’s. I am happy to be able to play a part in St George’s exciting plans and look forward to seeing the finished piece” www.philipglass.com

Help secure our future by joining our exclusive Apollo Club St George’s is a special place for musicians and audiences alike. The building has stood high on Brandon Hill, looking out across Bristol for nearly 200 years. For the past 40 years we’ve been filling it with the glorious sounds of some of the finest music making to be heard anywhere on the planet, securing its reputation as a hall of exceptional pedigree and as an essential part of the city’s cultural landscape. Our Building a Sound Future capital project is all about opening up St George’s to new audiences, providing the space and modern facilities it so desperately needs and securing it for generations to come. We have developed plans for an elegant, two storey extension to St George’s and when, in October 2017, this is revealed, it will be crowned with a stunning glass sculpture, Apollo, that celebrates music. Artist Luke Jerram has taken a line of music by Philip Glass, spun this beautiful sound on its axis and suspended it in space forever more. What a fitting tribute it will be. There is now an opportunity for you to be part of this ambitious project, and to express your own passionate belief in the value of what we do at St George’s, by joining our Apollo Club. The costs of production for the Apollo sculpture itself have already been met so all donations made by those joining the Apollo Club will go directly towards the funding needed to complete our Building a Sound Future project. The name of each Apollo Club member will be recorded for posterity inside the new extension, showing how you secured a bright new future for this wonderful hall and the people whose lives will continue to be changed here.

Our ambitious ‘Building a Sound Future’ capital project will create a bold garden pavilion extension designed by the award-winning architectural practice Patel Taylor. We have been granted full planning permission by Bristol City Council, ensuring our project goes ahead on schedule. It will be fully accessible, with new spaces for artists, students, daytime visitors and evening audiences, and for the first time we will be able to tell the full story of St George’s heritage. The stunning glass extension will also help us increase our revenue with a café and enhanced venue hire. As of November 2015, with the generous support of Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund, local and national Trusts and Foundations as well as many generous individuals, we have raised two thirds of our £5.5 million appeal target. We have launched the Apollo Club to help with the concluding phase of our appeal and raise a vital £600,000 towards the final target.

Apollo: A Sound Wave Sculpture St George’s Bristol has commissioned an exquisite sound wave sculpture, made of 100 hand blown glass roundels, which will hang as the centrepiece of our new building. Each roundel will be secured with a £5,000 donation towards the appeal, with donors’ names permanently and prominently recorded adjacent to the sculpture. Named Apollo, after the Greek god of music, it is inspired by a piece of music composed and played at St George’s by Philip Glass, one of the most influential music-makers of the late 20th century. Apollo has been designed by Bristol-based internationally-acclaimed artist Luke Jerram. The hand-blown sculpture is based on a 3-D musical wave, rotated about its axis, and taken from the composer’s 2nd Étude which he performed here in 2013. We welcome all individuals, corporates and organisations to give their support. By sponsoring a roundel, you will enjoy a range of exclusive benefits as a member of our Apollo Club, with all funds contributing directly to securing St George’s long-term future, and permanent recognition as a major donor to our appeal.
