hange is in the air this autumn, with our season ushering in improvements designed to transform your experience at St George’s. Our brochure boasts a fresh look that goes deeper than the cosmetic, with simplified pricing, early bird and subscription offers and a variety of concert start times to suit different lifestyles. Our new box office system means you can now choose exactly where you want to sit when you book online, and our new website will make it easier than ever for you to find out ‘what’s on’. On the classical front we present the game changers who continue to shape music making today, from pioneers like Jordi Savall, Viktoria Mullova and baroque giants, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, through to elite soloists whose thrilling and often daring interpretations seduce audiences both old and new — think John Williams, Alison Balsom, Paul Lewis and Mitsuko Uchida. And change doesn’t come much bigger than the themes dominating a major new series we’re preparing to launch in partnership with Bristol Music Trust later this year. The World Changed — Extreme Times, Extraordinary Music looks at the seismic shifts taking place around the period of the First World War, picking out some of the major works that came to define this period. On the eve of the series, and 100 years on from its premiere, we unleash a stunning 'two piano' version of Stravinsky’s epic The Rite of Spring — don’t be fooled by the slender forces, this is a visceral experience that packs all the power of the orchestral version. Our contemporary music programme is never less than stand out and on page eight our Senior Programme Producer, Phil Johnson, provides an insight into just why the hall works for so many different styles of music. Suzanne Rolt  DIRECTOR

Your beautiful venue Our magnificent listed building in the centre of Bristol was built in 1823 as a grand church within its own gardens, today it plays host to world class concerts, conferences, awards dinners and wedding receptions. The Crypt bar is a unique space to enjoy a drink before, during and after our concerts. It boasts an excellent wine list and a delicious selection of local beers, ales and ciders. 7 stgeorgesbristol.co.uk Talks

BEYOND THE BARLINE — A SERIES OF FASCINATING TALKS Jonathan James and David Bednall return for this popular series of talks illustrating and exploring the works of major composers. Having surveyed Britten and Wagner earlier this year, the first autumn series is dedicated to the other major opera figure to enjoy a bicentenary this year, Giuseppe Verdi. David Bednall looks at his work and the influence it was to have on the next generation, most notably Giacomo Puccini. A hundred years ago, the riotous premiere of 'The Rite of Spring' in Paris became a cause célèbre in classical culture, a watershed moment for both the young Stravinsky and the history of music. In this series, Jonathan James follows the composer's pioneering work from that iconic performance right up to the experiments of his final years in America, celebrating Stravinsky's insatiable appetite for the new and his radical re-envisioning of the old.

The Music

S

t George's is an extraordinary venue whose pin-drop acoustics and intimate setting create a musical magnifying glass where less really does mean more. As a programmer, this is both a privilege and a challenge: you want the best acts available, but they need to work with the hall rather than against it. it's also necessary to continually refresh things by introducing important new work. This autumn's season should fulfil both aims. in our International Jazz Series you can see Hugh Masekela and David Murray big stars who normally play much larger venues - up close and personal, while Kind of Brubeck and Bunch of Fives take advantage of the sumptuous sound to appear completely "unplugged", as artists in the classical series (programmed by Director Suzanne Rolt) do as a matter of course. Here, the opportunity to hear the natural sonic signatures of Matthew Barley, Viktoria Mullova, Mitsuko Uchida, Alison Balsom and Jordi Savall — and all in the same season — represents the essence of St George's great appeal.

Elsewhere in the programme, String Theory offers a chance to sample folk music's past, present and future, with Ralph McTell, Karine Polwart and star- in-the-making Olivia Chaney; and we go out of our comfort zone with two dates that really deserve attention: the pop-folk "Circus Swing" of Gabby Young & Other Animals, and composer Andrew Smith's 'Requiem' in memory of Norway's tragic Utoya killings of summer 2011. The latter features Arve Henriksen, a vital figure in new European music who we've supported for a decade. Phil Johnson  SENIOR PROGRAMME PRODUCER

Starry soloist Stephen Hough returns to St George's for something of a Cinderella among concertos: Dvorak's beautiful and poetic Piano Concerto in G minor. Folk music and the natural world are reflected in this work's innocence and joy. Either side are two energetic works by Beethoven, one of Dvorák's gods: the arresting overture to Fidelio, and the famous 5th Symphony which ends in a blaze of C major glory.

One of the UK’s leading chamber choirs presents a stunning feast of choral masterpieces for its Bristol debut. Winner of BBC Choir of the Year in 2010, the Wellensian Consort has appeared in acclaimed performances across the UK at venues including Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall and St John's Smith Square as well as in frequent broadcasts on BBC radio and television. Its recent debut CD release on the Naxos label has received universal critical acclaim.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS With support from Alessi’s Ark. John Darnielle has written almost 600 songs now, and some of them are very sad, but they are told in beautiful, unnervingly specific detail because some are true stories about his own life. The Mountain Goats’ latest album ‘Transcendental Youth’ is full of songs about people who madly, stupidly, blessedly won’t stop surviving, no matter who gives up on them. The line up includes Peter Hughes on bass, Jon Wurster on drums and, for the first time, a full horn section. This makes a very joyous noise.

RALPH MCTELL The much-loved troubador of English folk returns for a rare solo performance of songs old and new. PHILLIP DYSON PIANO FASCINATING RHYTHM

DAVID MURRAY QUARTET

Charismatic pianist Phillip Dyson returns with a colourful tribute to legendary composer and songwriter George Gershwin, blending the musical traditions of Tin Pan Alley, Broadway and Hollywood. In an evening packed with irresistible charm, Phillip recreates the nostalgia and dazzling toe-tapping jazz of the twenties and thirties with music and songs by Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller, Scott Joplin, Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. This is a unique and very special celebration, accompanied by the pianist’s light-hearted narrative.

An audience with the master! Tenor saxophonist Murray is the most exciting instrumentalist in jazz, his deep, soulful style evident in everything he does, from squawking blues and passionate ballads to big band dates with star vocalists Omara Portuondo or Macy Gray. You really need to see Murray with his own US group, and this one is a killer: Jaribu Shaheed on bass, Thornton Hudson Jr on piano and Hammond B3, and the legendary drummer Nasheet Waits. PASION FLAMENCA CLAUDIA CAOLIN Y COMPANIA

MICHAEL PORTILLO A GAME OF TWO HALVES

GATHERING VOICES FESTIVAL OF SONG

A colourful and electrifying Flamenco dance show on tour throughout the UK with international musicians and dancers. The artists are united by the desire to bring some of the Spanish ‘alegria’ (joy) and passion for life from the colourful culture of Andalusia to Bristol. Fabulous dancing, stunning costumes and passionate, alluring music; Pasion Flamenca is a celebration of the many different styles of Flamenco ranging from the exquisitely humorous to the deeply dramatic. Prepare for an evening of sumptuous imagery, vibrant sound and soaring emotions.

It took Michael Portillo little more than 10 years to get a seat in the Commons and then rise in power and esteem to a point where he was a favoured leader of his party and possible future PM. A track record like that suggests to many a privileged friend of the rich and famous with little or no understanding or care for the ordinary citizen. But since leaving the house almost a decade ago Michael has endeared himself to many with his obvious respect for solid workmanship like our great Victorian Railways and his care for the underprivileged (Michael became a Single Mum 2003) and the troubled (Death of a school friend 2002). Listen to his extraordinary story and then feel free to question him about it.

Join in this celebration of the beauty, power, range and inspiration of the human voice at the 4th annual Bristol Festival of Song. Traversing a splendid variety of styles, from contemporary to traditional and from right across the globe, you can encounter improv, jazz, world, classical, shanties, male voice, ladies harmony, vocal percussion, barbershop… the list goes on. The events take place right across the city and into the old Avon area with live performances, interactive workshops, vocal master classes and walkabout acts around the Harbourside.

BRISTOL ENSEMBLE THE GENIUS OF MOZART Freddy Kempf  piano Mozart – Piano Concerto No 21 in C minor K467 – Piano Concerto No 23 in A K488 – Overture to the Marriage of Figaro The Bristol Ensemble is joined by virtuoso pianist Freddy Kempf, a soloist who has a long association with the orchestra, to perform two of Mozart’s best-loved piano concertos. The Concerto No 23 was written at the same time as The Marriage of Figaro, the overture to which provides a stylish opener for the concert. Concerto No 21 in C, with its poignant middle movement, is probably the best known of all of Mozart’s piano concertos. Freddy Kempf, a master communicator, directs the orchestra from the piano.

ANDREAS VARADY GROUP It's not too long since childprodigy guitarist Andreas Varady - from Slovakia via Ireland - was busking on the streets of Limerick. Now 15, he's on his way to becoming a major international star, with Quincy Jones picking him for the Montreux Jazz Festival and signing him up to his management company, and a new album to be released on Verve. Like Django crossed with George Benson, Varady does speed-of-light single-note runs and dazzling tripleoctave harmonies with a 'feel' that's simply uncanny, as duo partners Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Taylor can attest. His father, Bandi, plays bass, with David Lyttle on drums. “Super-swinging and soulful” GUITAR PLAYER

Mozart – Exsultate Jubilate Monn – Concerto for Cello, Continuo and Strings Vivaldi – Concerto for Orchestra Tartini – Concerto for Violin The English National Baroque Ensemble features players from BBC NOW, The London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony and English Chamber Orchestra. It returns to St George’s for its annual concert of the great concertos of the golden age of Baroque. This engaging ensemble has developed its own distinct character, style and sound over the past decade, establishing itself as a firm favourite on the UK music circuit. It is acclaimed for its assertive orchestral playing, crisp detail and obvious enjoyment at music making.

Mozart – ‘Bastien & Bastienne’ Ad Parnassum and L’Offerta Musicale return to St George's after their successful production of ‘Dido & Aeneas’ last year with something completely different: Mozart's comic opera ‘Bastien & Bastienne’. Commissioned to parody the 'Pastoral' fashion of the period, Mozart's little Singspiel, written in 1768 when he was twelve, glitters with youthful enthusiasm and musical gems which gives the audience a clear measure of Mozart’s works to come.

WILD WORDS HANSEL & GRETEL PLUS+

THE NIGHT OF THE SPANISH GUITAR

We all know the story about the innocent boy and girl who were left in the forest by their nasty parents to starve and die, found a house made of gingerbread and ate the windows that belonged to a witch, who tried to gobble them up, got pushed into a fire, and didn’t see the children escape to live happily ever after. Well that wasn’t really the end of the story, but only the beginning of the trouble…

Javier García Moreno  guitar Antonio Rey  guitar Mara Rey  voice & dancer Toni Rey  guitar

Come and listen if you dare to what happened next. Storyteller Michael Loader spins spells of good and evil, and musicians Liz Purnell and Martin Solomon bubble away with a wicked brew of haunting melodies and devilish song on harp, dulcimer, trumpet and trombone. 10.15am for brave 4-6 year olds (45 minutes) 1.30pm for not-so-easily frightened 7-11 year olds (60 minutes)

Javier García Moreno’s wonderful interpretations distinguish him as one of the Spanish guitar world’s foremost personalities who has a prolific artistic career throughout Europe, the U.S, South America and Japan including recitals at Carnegie Hall in New York and National Auditorium of Music in Madrid. Flamenco prodigy Antonio Rey has won six major awards in the most prestigious of guitar competitions and his fans include the great Gerardo Núñez who produced Antonio’s album “A través de Ti” which showed that not only is he an astonishing guitar virtuoso, but also an original, inspired and often surprising artist. antonio-rey.com

ASHLEY WASS PIANO BACH TO THE FUTURE

‘The Beast in Its Tracks’, the new album from renowned singer-songwriter Josh Ritter, was released March 5 on Pytheas Recordings. Of the record, Ritter said, “In the year after my marriage ended, I realised that I had more new songs than I’d ever had at one time. Far from the grand, sweeping feel of the songs on ‘So Runs the World Away’, these new songs felt like rocks in the shoe, hard little nuggets of whatever they were, be it spite, remorse, or happiness.” Ritter celebrated the release of The Beast in Its Tracks with a North American tour and now brings it to the UK.

Beethoven – Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor – Symphony No 7 in A

When no musical genre seemed to offer a handle for their theatrical mash-up of gypsy romance, jazz style, folk roots and torch-song tenderness, eight-piece troupe Gabby Young and Other Animals invented their own: Circus Swing. Think big emotions and burlesque cabaret meets pop sensibility, with Gabby's witty songs set to a swinging soundtrack of belting brass. Skip the future arena tour and see them now.

Oxford Philomusica makes a welcome return to St George’s with a compelling double bill. Beethoven’s passionate and fiery Piano Concerto No 3 offers glimpses of a new musical era and, when paired with a more mature work such as the brilliantly luminous Symphony No 7, highlights just how far the composer’s style developed through his career.

Now, Masekela and Willis (who recorded with Stan Getz, Lee Morgan and many more) reunite for a duo programme of their favourite tunes, leaning heavily on the Great American Songbook. With acres of space to roam in, Masekela's delightfully fluttering flugelhorn and incomparable balladsensitivity find their perfect setting. Led by Lau accordionist Martin Green, it is performed by a specially assembled group of folk luminaries made up of Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), nykelharpist Niklas Roswall and singer Inge Thomson (Karine Polwart band). Drawing together songs of murderous visitations and unnatural happenings, Crow’s Bones takes you deep into a musical hinterland of broken music boxes and twisted gramophones to reveal the dark heart of folk song.

Currently collaborating with renowned author Terry Pratchett on a new record based on his Wintersmith novel, their 2013 show sees them debuting new gems alongside the classics that have made them one of the most successful British folk rock bands ever. “Don't miss them...” THE INDEPENDENT

BRISTOL ENSEMBLE A BAROQUE CHRISTMAS Mhairi Lawson  soprano Roger Huckle  director/violin Handel – Gloria Corelli – Concerto Grosso in G minor Op 6 No 8 ‘Christmas Concerto’ Vivaldi – Concerto for Two Trumpets Vivaldi – Nulla in mundo pax sincera Vivaldi – Christmas Concerto An exquisite evening of Christmas music from the golden era of the Baroque including festive music by Handel, Vivaldi and Corelli sung by soprano Mhairi Lawson, one of the UK’s leading early music specialists. With her crystal clear tone and flawless technique, her performance of Handel’s Gloria is eagerly anticipated, a work that was lost for nearly three centuries before a score was discovered in 2001. The piece, scored for solo soprano and ensemble, is virtuosic, expressive and full of intricate and flamboyant vocal writing. The orchestra performs Christmas Concertos by Vivaldi and Corelli, as well as Vivaldi’s joyful Concerto for Two Trumpets. “Such tonal beauty and grace that time seemed to stand still.” THE GUARDIAN

JOE VOLK / OLIVIA CHANEY

THREE CANE WHALE

Singer-songwriter Olivia Chaney is the rising star of the UK's new-folk scene. Yet to release an album (there's an EP on Rough Trade), she has collaborated with Alasdair Roberts, Zero 7 and the Unthanks and been tipped as one to watch by Ray Davies and Jarvis Cocker. Her pure voice casts a powerful spell, whether singing her own songs or versions of Joni Mitchell ('A Case of You') and Bert Jansch ('Running From Home'). The show is opened with a rare appearance by Joe Volk, a Bristol troubador signed to Geoff Barrow's Invada label who's now resident in Switzerland. Joe is also part of the band Crippled Black Phoenix. His debut solo album was produced by Portishead's Adrian Utley.

Instrumental trio Three Cane Whale are Bristol's best kept secret: a unique, unpretentious super-group who combine their talents and multiple sound-sources to produce quietly compelling music that's fresh, free and as natural as a daisy on the downs. The secret is also getting out: they're the most critically acclaimed band to emerge from the city for years, whose two albums have racked up the kind of superlatives most groups can only dream about. This show is opened by TCW's special guests Telling the Bees, a cult multiinstrumental group whose "darkly crafted folk" has entranced 'The Wicker Man' director Robin Hardy.

“A star in the making.”

With Telling The Bees

“Think of the way light refracts through a raindrop. Intricate, atmospheric and simply beautiful.”

Support Us BUILDING A SOUND FUTURE We have been continuing our plans to reconfigure and extend the building and this work will continue throughout next year. GRAND PIANO APPEAL After years of regular use, our Steinway Grand Piano is nearing the end of its concert life and needs replacing. The piano is at the very heart of what we do and essential to our existence as a chamber music concert hall. To buy a new concert grand on a like-for-like basis would cost more than we can possibly afford. Steinway has offered to lease St George’s a brand new concert grand 25% cheaper than the purchase price, spreading the cost over a 10 year lease period. If you love the piano, or St George’s — or both, you can help us by pledging a regular gift over a 5 or 10 year period. We are looking for Sponsors at 3 levels: Piano Key Sponsor  £100 per year Arpeggio Sponsor  £400 per year Octave sponsor  £800 per year Please contact Audrey Michel for further information on 0117 929 4929 or email a.michel@stgeorgesbristol.co.uk

In April 2013 new legislation was introduced by the Department of Business Innovation and Skills with the prime aim of protecting consumers from being charged disproportionate and non-transparent credit/debit card fees when booking online. In compliance with the new legislation we have changed our fee structures and standardised them across the booking channels. Our fees are clearly stated at the start and end of the transaction process. Booking fees contribute towards the costs of providing up-to-date, reliable and convenient ticketing services to our customers. Credit/debit card transaction fee £1 — charged to all customers per transaction using a credit or debit card online, over the phone or in person. This fee covers the charges from our merchant bank to process the cards and contributes towards the associated costs of providing chip and pin. Administration fee £1 — per transaction charged to all bookers standardised across the different booking methods (online, in person and on telephone). This fee contributes towards some of the costs of providing an in house professional box office service; staffing, ticketing software, printers, ticket stock, IT and telephone lines Postage fee 70p — Tickets can be posted if requested at a charge of 70p covering postage We recognise that booking fees are an unwelcome addition to ticket prices for many of our customers. Standardising the administration fee fairly across the booking channels ensures that St George’s Bristol complies with the new legislation, but we do understand that this will be unpopular with some of our most valued and loyal customers. Further information about booking fees can be found at www.stgeorgesbristol. co.uk/booking. Should you wish to share your opinions on booking fees and pricing in general we welcome your feedback. Please contact Jane Martin, Head of Marketing. Thank you for your ongoing support.
