Season Programme | Sep — Dec 2016

Welcome to St George’s…

O

n 18 October 1986 we held our first public evening concert. 30 years on, we’re going from strength to strength, promoting a wider range of music and spoken word events than ever before. Given that 30 is now the new 21, we’ve invited the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment back for a special birthday celebration — and audiences can get into the party swing by voting for the encore!

The OAE encapsulates all that is great about St George’s: a world leading, ground breaking orchestra whose players have built up close bonds with Bristol audiences. It sets the pace and the bar in terms of exhilarating performances, handing over the baton to countless worldclass soloists and groups who follow suit with concerts that make audiences catch their breath and bring them to the edge of their seats. This season is as eclectic as ever, crossing continents and centuries to bring you inventive, perfectly formed offerings of jazz, folk, world and contemporary classical. We’re big on fusions of words and music too, with music-edged plays that reveal the hidden worlds of Satie, Rachmaninov and the passions simmering beneath Tolstoy’s Kreutzer Sonata.

Music that has laid undiscovered for hundreds of years comes up for air alongside the latest compositions by young composers from around the South West and two special premieres of Art of Flight commissions by Graham Fitkin and Liz Lane. We’re Puttin’ on the Ritz with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra and going Back to the Roots with a new folk series before winding our way towards the year-end with an uplifting trail of festive fiestas. Running alongside the music is our capital project ‘Building a Sound Future’. By the time you read this, spades will be in the ground and the foundations of the new extension in place to transform your experience of St George’s. We still need support to reach our fundraising target, so if you think you can help us to transform St George’s, please get in touch. Suzanne Rolt  CHIEF EXECUTIVE

CALENDAR

Don’t miss… BACK TO THE ROOTS Our new series looks at the past, present and future of folk music, taking the opportunity of a 50th anniversary memorial concert for Clifton’s legendary Troubadour club to shine a light on what has always been a very important part of St George’s programme. As well as the local favourites and surprise guests of the Troubador show, there are dates for new folk troubadour Sam Lee, Irish singer Heidi Talbot and her all-star band, rising stars Megson, the duo of writer George Monbiot and singer Ewan McLennan, plus the return of punk-folkers Lynched and an intimate solo show by the daddy of them all, Loudon Wainwright III.

THE ART OF FLIGHT Our celebration of fugue and flight continues this season with must-see concerts by Brodsky Quartet (p.6), Exultate Singers (p.8) and a whole weekend of music and special events in November (p.16/17), including world premieres of specially commissioned music. Also in November we play host to a fantastic exhibition of aviation art by the acclaimed artist David Bent in the crypt. Discover David’s work at davidbentstudio.com.

YOUNG COMPOSERS' ACADEMY SHOWCASE CONCERT Bristol Ensemble This is the first concert from the Young Composers’ Academy, a joint venture between St George’s and New Music in the South West (NMSW), providing composers aged 16 to 19 with a programme of workshops, individual tuition, composer master classes and commissions. The event begins with a full day’s composition workshop with members of the Bristol Ensemble. This gives the young composers the opportunity to rehearse their pieces under the guidance of professional composers before being performed at a public concert in the evening. This promises to be a genuinely exciting and inspiring occasion.

FROM DARKNESS INTO LIGHT Kokoro Ensemble Programme to include:  Graham Fitkin  Totti  Henry Cowell  The Banshee  Michael Torke  Telephone Book  alongside new works specially commissioned by New Music in the South West and shortlisted pieces from the NMSW Young Composers’ Prize 2016 Recent classics and special commissions take us on a dramatic journey from forbidding, shadowy darkness to joyous, uplifting light! Devised and promoted by NMSW, and expertly performed by Kokoro, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's brilliant contemporary music ensemble. Audience members are also invited to join an informal ‘meet the composers’ session in the crypt.

RICHARD BOOTHBY ‘TELEMANN’S FANTASIES’ It’s not often that 12 works previously unknown by a major composer just turn up. Yet that is precisely what has happened with these solo Fantasies by Telemann. He wrote and published sets of 12 sonatas for solo violin, flute, harpsichord and viola da gamba, issued in monthly format, as was usual at the time. Those for violin, flute and harpsichord all survive in several copies, but those for the viol were thought lost. In 2014 these extraordinarily precious works were rediscovered and tonight virtuoso viol player Richard Boothby gives one of the first performances of the complete set. 70 minutes without interval

The Art of Flight Bristol800 Weekender Friday 25 — Sunday 27 November

GRAHAM FITKIN GROUP ‘WING’ (World première) One of the leading composers of his generation, Graham Fitkin’s recent work has included a cello concerto for Yo Yo Ma and a commission for London’s Cultural Olympiad in 2012. Graham is also a West Country native, born in Cornwall with strong links to Bristol and its musical culture, including St George’s. His taut, propulsive music reflects a strong interest in technology and engineering, which made him a perfect choice for our special ‘Art of Flight’ commission. This new piece, Wing, to be given its premiere in the second half of this all-Fitkin bill, was partly inspired by a visit to the historic Bristol Aeroplane Company hangars at Filton. ‘I remember as a boy designing and throwing paper planes out of high windows and trying to get them to go further. And generally failing,’ Graham says. ‘I still wonder about this… Thrust and lift. Wings and flaps…’ Come and see Wing take flight for the first time. ‘Achingly romantic British pastoral updated to an edgy, utterly contemporary, urban landscape’ THE INDEPENDENT (ON FITKIN’S ‘AGNOSTIC’)

LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III Plus special guest Chaim Tannenbaum Singer, songwriter, raconteur and entertainer supreme, Loudon Wainwright III has been a star of folk music for close to half a century. Emerging as one of a number of ‘new Bob Dylans’, he was described by The New York Times as ‘far and away the most candid diarist among the singersongwriters… who brought confessional poetry into popular song’. His songs have been covered by Johnny Cash, Norma Waterson, and his own son, Rufus, among many others and as an actor he’s appeared in films by Judd Apatow, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton, and on TV in M.A.S.H and David Letterman. GEORGE MONBIOT & EWAN MCLENNAN ‘THE AGE OF LONELINESS’ The celebrated columnist and political/ environmental campaigner and commentator George Monbiot joins forces with leading folk singer and musician (and Bristol resident) Ewan McLennan for a unique collaboration in words and music. The venture originated in an article about loneliness that George wrote for The Guardian which immediately went viral. He and Ewan subsequently extended the ideas in the article into a series of songs that together make up a new album, The Age of Loneliness. This very rare live performance will feature Ewan performing the songs while George talks about the stories and hinterland behind them.

TIM GARLAND Whether as a star soloist playing in the band of jazz royalty Chick Corea or as the saxophonist/composer for his own projects from small group to orchestra, Tim Garland has gradually imprinted himself in the imagination of the nation as the greatest reeds virtuoso we have. He is also an inspirational leader of what must be one of the best bands anywhere: Jason Rebello, piano; Asaf Sirkis, drums/ percussion; and Ant Law, guitar. Tonight Tim and the band (with the possibility of a surprise guest or two) perform the music from his new album, One. ‘His level of genius is rare’ CHICK COREA

LYNCHED

JYOTSNA SRIKANTH & THE BOLLYWOOD BRASS BAND ‘CARNATIC CONNECTIONS’

Imagine the Pogues crossed with a Celtic Tiger-comedown version of the Dubliners and you’re half-way there. Last year’s St George’s debut by Lynched is already the stuff of legend: an uproarious, gloriously entertaining evening of airs, ballads, jigs, reels and erudite introductions that moved the blissed-out audience from one emotional extreme to another, from laughter to tears and back again. Since then, the quartet of Ian and Darrargh Lynch, Cormac Mac Diarmada and Radie Peat, has become the hottest act in folk. Catch them in a human-sized hall while you still can.

Strings meet brass in this new collaboration, bringing together virtuosic violin playing and funky brass and drums. The show features solo sets from both artists, instrumental versions of film songs from Bollywood and South India, plus new material created for this tour. Expect to be enchanted and surprised in turn; you won’t sit still for long… The show will be accompanied by video sequences synched to the live music.

GOGO PENGUIN ‘We’re re-creating electronic music on acoustic instruments’ says GoGo Penguin’s pianist Chris Illingworth of the Manchester trio’s modus operandi on their latest album, Man Made Object. It’s a good summary, but heard live, there’s so much more, too: the shuddering sub-bass oomph of double-bassist Nick Blacka’s seismic-sounding riffs meshed with the off-kilter, broken-beat rhythms of drummer Rob Turner’s percussive attack, and Illingworth’s classical/minimalist pianistic patterns. Now signed to Blue Note Records and playing the biggest gigs going (Coachella, A Love Supreme), GoGo Penguin is about to hit an absolute peak.

MEGSON

MUSIC OF THE GREAT WAR

Debs and Stu Hanna are Megson, a husband and wife folk duo from Teeside whose mysterious songs were described by Mojo magazine as ‘a rich acoustic mix of miners, lovers, charlatans and whimsy’. Their 2014 album, In a Box, was tipped as one of the best folk albums of the year by The Daily Telegraph and its eagerlyawaited follow-up, ‘Good Times Will Come Again’, launched with a sold-out show at London’s King’s Place. Debs sings and plays penny whistle and accordion; Stu plays guitar, banjo and mandola. It’s lo-fi, no frills folk with proper songs about the lives of real people.

During WW1 the troops would sing at almost any opportunity — whether marching to and from the trenches, whilst in the trenches, in pubs or during the long periods of waiting between battles. The RAFA Concert Band, Bristol Male Voice Choir and other guests, perform an enjoyable and inspiring programme to mark the Centenary of The Battle of the Somme. Audience participation and flagwaving is encouraged, with time to reflect on the human cost of conflict and hope for a more peaceful world. Image supplied with kind agreement by richardharpum.com

TUBULAR BRASS PLAY TUBULAR BELLS One of the all-time great classic albums, Tubular Bells, is performed live by Tubular Brass, a specially formed 28-piece brass band made up of some of the UK’s leading players. Plus, in the first half of the concert the ensemble presents Mary Casio, a new commission for brass band and ’70s analogue synthesisers by Hannah Peel, a young ‘next generation’ electronic composer who grew up playing in colliery brass bands. Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells stayed in the UK charts for 273 weeks, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time. Mary Casio pays affectionate tribute to it and the context of ’70s prog concept albums, together with the influences of electronica pioneers Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire. Its theme is an intergalactic journey from Earth (Barnsley, Yorkshire) to the constellation of Cassiopeia.

PHRONESIS Multi-national power-trio Phronesis —  described as ‘one of the most exciting bands on the planet!’ by Jazzwise mag — is the fastest and most virtuosic of all the new European jazz groups, with a blinkand-you’ve-missed-it, thinking on your feet approach that leads to no holds-barred, wickedly dangerous music. It’s also a trio of equals, with Danish bassist Jasper Hoiby and Swedish drummer Anton Eger, each as important to the overall sound as English pianist Ivo Neame. Tonight, Phronesis perform their latest album, Parallax, which was recorded at London’s Abbey Road studios in a single day. phronesismusic.com
