St George’s Bristol @stgeorgesbris
Introduction 40 years on and St George’s is a very different place. No longer a church, its ecclesiastical fixtures have gradually been replaced by those needed for a modern concert hall — a transformation that will be complete with our Building a Sound Future capital project. Many things have changed, but the one thing that has remained consistent down the years is the commitment to presenting the best artists and music around. The big names of the classical music world still abound, but today they are joined by the stars of jazz, folk, Americana, world music, not to mention the writers and thinkers who populate our spoken word programme. The new season offers a wealth of concerts and festivals, not least our new The Art of Flight which takes off in multiple directions with homages to the great fugal writing of the past as well as new commissions inspired by Bristol’s celebrated aeronautical history. There are two big concerts with the OAE to look forward to, while Aurora is carving new pathways through classical orchestral music. We’re also honoured to be presenting the High Sheriff’s 2016 Concert. Filmic 2016 looks at technology in sound and vision, from the breath-driven atmospherics of Colin Stetson to the role of the theremin in Hitchcock and Tim Burton Films to the digital mapping of film and music in ‘Places of Worship’, with a special January pre-launch concert featuring the moody French cinema synth-sounds of Nouvelle Vague-offshoot, Bristol. There’s the return of Bristol Folk Festival and Slapstick Festival, four of the greatest double bassists on the planet drop by during the season — and there are enough West African koras to start a korestra! Enjoy... Suzanne Rolt

A detailed view of our Apollo Sculpture
In 1976 St George’s held its first ever concert, a lunchtime performance given by the Academy of the BBC Orchestra.
Apollo A soundwave sculpture to record and celebrate individual and corporate donors to our Building a Sound Future appeal. As the largest capital development in the history of St George’s progresses into its final development phase and our much anticipated extension transfers from an architect’s model into reality, our focus is on securing the final tranche of funding ahead of construction works commencing in spring 2016. We will remain open throughout this period. To get us there we are calling on you, our generous supporters and regular audiences, to become directly involved. We have commissioned a new sculpture to record each and every major donor to the appeal, to hang as the permanent centre piece of our new extension. Named Apollo, after the Greek god of music, this unique sound wave sculpture is inspired by Philip Glass’ Etude No 2 which he performed here in 2013, and designed by Bristol based internationally-acclaimed artist Luke Jerram.
‘As a trustee, I know how important it is that we raise this money. By joining the Apollo Club I am helping to give St George’s Bristol a sound future’ BEN HEALD
Our Apollo sculpture is made up of 100 handblown glass roundels, each one representing a £5,000 donation to our appeal. Donations are welcome from individuals, companies and groups who may wish to contribute together to name a roundel after their choir or orchestra, or any group that would like to be directly associated with the transformed St George’s. Payment can be made in instalments until the project completion date of Autumn 2017. All confirmed donors will become members of our Apollo Club, with benefits including an annual reception to acknowledge and celebrate this investment in our sound future. If you are able to sponsor a roundel, individually or as part of a group, you will always have the delight of looking up when you arrive at St George’s and remembering how you secured this hall for future generations. With the production costs of the sculpture already raised, 100% of funds raised from roundel sponsorship goes directly to our appeal. For further details and payment terms please contact Simon Farley, Head of Fundraising & Development on 0117 929 4929 (Ext.205), visit our appeal website: buildingasoundfuture.co.uk and look out for the short promotional film kindly produced by Icon Films in support of the appeal which we are screening before selected concerts throughout the season.

Beyond the Barline Talks ART THAT NEVER STANDS STILL — T HE BEETHOVEN REVOLUTION
‘Art demands of us that we shall never stand still’, claimed Beethoven, and much of his music was born out of that personal credo. Even now, some of his late works continue to unsettle the listener with their quest for a 'new path'. Jonathan James and David Bednall return with a six-part series to follow that path and to see where it led for the composer and classical music as a whole, focusing on his innovations in each genre. With Beethoven, revolution was almost always in the air. O
ur high quality, accessible daytime concerts are perfect if you like your classical music in smaller bites. This season violinist Krysia Osostowicz and pianist Daniel Tong bring a new and exciting dimension to Beethoven’s ten sonatas for violin and piano, by inviting ten leading composers to each write a short companion piece to one of the Beethoven sonatas. These new pieces, performed alongside the works they were inspired by, create musical ‘conversations’ between living composers and the great master himself, and shed new light on what Beethoven’s music means to us today. Beethoven Plus is generously funded by Arts Council England, the PRS Music Foundation, the RVW Trust, the Holst Foundation, the Hinrichsen Foundation and the Radcliffe Trust.

An Evening of Songs by Schumann, Brahms, Schubert & Wolf The supreme artistry and mutual understanding of Mark Padmore and Paul Lewis make them an ideal duo for this beautifullycrafted journey through some of the great moments of German lieder. Exploring the universal themes of love, loneliness and mortality, the music and imagery of these songs conjures high drama and deep desolation as they roam from warmth and exuberance to elegiac introspection. ‘…his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter’ WASHINGTON POST
HENRY ROLLINS In describing Henry Rollins, the tendency is to try to squeeze as many labels as possible into a single sentence. ‘Rollins is many things,’ says the Washington Post, ‘diatribist, confessor, provocateur, humourist, even motivational speaker… his is an enthusiastic and engaging chatter.’ Entertainment Weekly’s list includes ‘Punk Rock icon. Spoken word poet. Actor. Author. DJ. Is there anything this guy can’t do?’ TV Guide has more concisely called him a ‘Renaissance Man’ but if Henry Rollins could be reduced to a single word, that word would undoubtedly be ‘workaholic’. When he’s not travelling, Rollins prefers to keep a relentless schedule full of work, with gigs as an actor, author, DJ, voiceover artist and TV show host.

ST GEORGE'S 1823 LECTURE St George’s Bristol and the British Museum share a special connection in that both buildings were designed by the same architect: Sir Robert Smirke. To mark this historic link, we begin what we hope will become an annual lecture series. For this inaugural talk we are delighted to welcome the British Museum’s Deputy Director, Jonathan Williams. The British Museum was founded in 1753 to be a new kind of institution — where the public could come and find out about the world for free. But what is the purpose of the British Museum now in the 21st century? Jonathan talks about its history, present, and looks ahead to the future. britishmuseum.org Promoted by St George’s Bristol

THE MAKING OF ‘THE HUNT’ FILMING REVELATIONS FROM THE LANDMARK BBC1 DAVID ATTENBOROUGH SERIES with Alastair Fothergill executive producer Huw Cordey series producer
MUSIC OF THE BAROQUE… IN 50 MINUTES with Jonathan James The seventeenth century saw the arrival of outlandish wigs, curvaceous architecture and some of the most lavish paintings in the history of art. How was this reflected in the music? Starting with early Italian masters such as Scarlatti and Corelli, we tread an exciting path through an era of extraordinary invention in instrumental music and opera, culminating in masterpieces by Handel and Bach. jonathanjamesmusic.com
The Hunt is a series with real-life, edge-of-theseat drama. But it’s not about killing. It’s a landmark production about the sophisticated relationships between predators and prey. And The Hunt’s state-of-the-art technology has revealed more about some of these relationships than even the scientists knew. Hear about filming breakthroughs, personal dramas, scientific discoveries and aerial revelations, and be shown special clips from behind the scenes. Characters appearing on screen include Arctic Wolves, aerobatic Caracals, and giant Blue Whales. This is guaranteed to be an eye-opening presentation. Running time 75 minutes without interval. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment returns with a programme featuring music from the earliest part of their repertoire — the Baroque geniuses that are Monteverdi and Cavalli, composers who each made a huge mark on the history of music. Monteverdi’s vespers and madrigals are revolutionary in harmony and style and straddle the divide between the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Cavalli, however, was at the time a rising star in the genre of public opera. Robert Howarth’s recent recording of Monteverdi’s Vespers with the OAE was widely acclaimed and this is a superb opportunity to hear him direct the OAE as he delves in further riches of this era in the wonderful acoustic of St George's.

Janáček Pohadka (A Fairy Tale) Dvořák Silent Woods Brahms Cello Sonata in E minor Op 38
The latest project by composer and record producer Marc Collin, the founder of cult French film & lounge-music specialists Nouvelle Vague, is Bristol: a cinematicsounding homage to the ‘Bristol Sound’, the Nineties trip-hop style associated with Portishead, Massive Attack and Tricky. In Collin’s hands, familiar tunes and beats receive a Sixties makeover that is both intensely filmic and sleekly sensual, with the musicians and guest singers reinterpreting material by Portishead, Neneh Cherry and others alongside new tunes in a similar vein. To celebrate the big occasion of Bristol appearing in the city’s grandest venue, we’ve created a special Bristol-themed party, with an opening solo piano set by local legend Jimmy Galvin, and a DJ aftershow in the bar from Queen Bee.
Distinguished chamber musicians Alice Neary and Daniel Tong return to our lunchtime series with a sumptuous programme featuring Janáček’s endearing musical realisation of a princely Russian fairy tale, ‘Pohadka’, and Brahms’ equally enchanting first Cello Sonata. We’re bringing out the titans of the piano repertoire this season — we launched in September with the mighty Liszt B Minor Sonata and now the ever-brilliant Paul Lewis returns with another tour de force, Liszt’s Dante Sonata. This is a piece that evokes The Divine Comedy in a single movement, describing the wild journey of the soul into hell before offering a final, tantalising glimpse of Paradise. It crowns a programme of some of the most intensely personal of Brahms’s piano music, the three tender Intermezzi he described as ‘lullabies to my sorrows’, and an early sonata by the then genius-in-the-bud, Schubert. ‘One of the greatest pianists of our time.’ THE HERALD

The vigour and colour of the nationalist tradition is abundant in the symphony, but so too is that telling conjunction of wit and tragedy that came to characterise the mature Shostakovich. ‘Her cupped hands drew cushioned warmth from the strings…’ THE TIMES

DUO KAPSETAKIS Stephanie Kapsetaki & Marianna Kapsetaki pianos
DAN TEPFER GOLDBERG VARIATIONS Prize-winning pianist Dan Tepfer was born in Paris to an American family and grew up bi-lingual, which he credits with instilling his unusually bi-partisan approach to music, moving between jazz and the classical repertoire with great ease. He also has a degree in Astrophysics from Edinburgh University, and trained as an opera conductor. Tonight Tepfer presents his acclaimed solo suite based on J S Bach’s Goldberg Variations, where the original movements are followed by improvisations to form a second set of variations. This very rare date in a short UK tour follows the success of a Wigmore Hall concert for the London Jazz Festival. ‘Riveting, inspired...’ THE NEW YORK TIMES

RYLEY WALKER & DANNY THOMPSON Singer-songwriter Ryley Walker plays guitar (a Guild D-35) like Bert Jansch and sings like Tim Buckley. Still only in his mid-twenties, he’s going to be a major figure, as the rave reviews for his second album, Primrose Green attest. For this unmissable date, Walker is joined by the revered double-bassist Danny Thompson, who of course played with both Bert Jansch (in Pentangle) and Tim Buckley, as well as with Nick Drake, John Martyn and many more, helping to create the lyrical, folk-jazz style that so influenced Ryley close to half a century later. The music should suit the richly reflective reverb of St George’s to perfection. ‘Stoned, summery somnambulance…’ THE GUARDIAN ON PRIMROSE GREEN ALBUM

SECKOU KEITA 22 STRINGS, PLUS GWYNETH GLYN
The beguiling sound of the kora, a harp-lute from West Africa, is played with great rhythmic intensity by Seckou Keita, a griot from Senegal who is also a master of the djembe drum. While the kora usually has 21 strings, Keita has followed an ancient tradition by adding another, which explains the name of his latest album, 22 Strings (a runaway success, and currently the biggest hit in world music), and the title of this entrancing solo show. Last seen here in a thrilling collaboration with the Welsh harpist Catrin Finch, Keita has now become an international star, with 5-star reviews and magazine cover-features for 22 Strings helping to make him one of the most in-demand acts in African music. ANDY KIRKPATRICK’S COLD MOUNTAIN
ONYX BRASS ENSEMBLE
A unique story teller and comedian, described as being the ‘The Ranulph Fiennes of British Climbing’ by the Today Programme, Andy Kirkpatrick has climbed in some of the most inhospitable places on earth, from Greenland to Alaska, Patagonia to Antarctica. In this new tour we begin where his last finished, arriving in Antarctica with the task of guiding a group of BASE jumpers to the top of one of the ‘hardest mountains in the world’. Cold Mountain takes you on an adventure that is at the very boundary of the possible; physically, mentally and emotionally — a climb that laid bare the realities of modern adrenaline sports, as well as friendship. Andy also reflects back on a lifetime spent climbing on many such cold mountains — the climbers, the climbs and the lessons he learnt there. Cold Mountain, like all of Andy’s shows, is hard to pin down; a mix of comedy, pathos and brutal honesty about a life on the edge in every sense.

BALLAKE SISSOKO & VINCENT SEGAL MUSIQUE DU NUIT
If paradise has a sound it must be something like this. The complementary tonal colours of Sissoko’s kora and Segal’s cello combine — like Africa entwined with Europe — to produce an utterly transfixing blend. Five years ago, Sissoko (from Mali, and a veteran of previous partnerships with Taj Mahal and Ludovico Einaudi) and Segal (from France, and a regular guest with Sting and Elvis Costello) produced the classic duo album Chamber Music. Now they present its follow-up: Musique de Nuit. Recorded partly on the rooftop of Sissoko’s house in Bamako, this is conversational music that evokes late nights under African skies, and the search for peace and beauty amidst war. sixdegreesrecords.com Promoted by St George’s Bristol

BRISTOL METROPOLITAN ORCHESTRA PERFORMS MAHLER William Goodchild conductor Hannah Sawle soprano Delius Brigg Fair Richard Strauss Sechs Lieder Op 68 Mahler Symphony No 4 in G Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra is joined by soprano Hannah Sawle, for a concert of delightful early twentieth century music, opening with Delius’ orchestral variations based on an English folk song. Both Richard Strauss’ Six Songs, with text by the German romantic poet Clemens Brentano and Mahler’s 4th Symphony, composed at the turn of the century, represent the beauty of the German Lied. The symphony has a particular lightness of orchestral texture and is full of warmth and good humour. The soprano voice joins the orchestra in the last movement for the setting of a poem from ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’ describing a child’s idea of paradise.

Debussy Prélude à l’Après-Midi d’un Faune Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 4 Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade Shostakovich Jazz Suite: Waltz No 2 & Tea for Two Prélude à l’Après-Midi d’un Faune, often thought to be the beginning of modern music, evokes a faun playing his pan-pipes alone in the woods, becoming aroused by passing nymphs and naiads and then succumbing to a deep, visionfilled sleep. Taiwanese-born pianist You-Chiung Lin takes centre-stage tonight to delight us with Rachmaninov’s daringly chromatic and jazzy fourth piano concerto. The symphonic poem Scheherazade is based on One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Arabic tales, and combines two features typical of Russian music and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: dazzling, colourful orchestration and a strong interest in the East. ‘Michael Crawford is one of our best loved stars’ DAILY MAIL
MICHAEL CRAWFORD CBE VISUAL COMEDY LEGEND As the accident-prone yet loveable Frank Spencer in BBC TV’s classic comedy Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em (1973 - 78), Michael Crawford captivated 16 million viewers a week and turned ‘Ooh, Betty’ into a national catchphrase. The role also earned him comparisons with Buster Keaton, due to his mastery of slapstick-style, physical comedy and his willingness to use even more daring stunts, such as dangling from a Morris Minor over a cliff edge or roller-skating underneath a moving articulated lorry. This alone makes him a worthy winner of the Aardman Slapstick Visual Comedy Award, presented annually by Slapstick Festival and Aardman Animations, and whose previous recipients include Eric Sykes CBE, The Goodies and Pierre Etaix. Michael will be presented with this prestigious award on stage during the event. Hear Michael in conversation discussing his role as Frank and his many other award-winning roles involving comedy, skill and hazard, among them Billy (based on the novel Billy Liar), Barnum, the Phantom of the Opera and most recently The Wizard of Oz. slapstick.org.uk

MIKHAIL KAZAKEVICH PIANO Mendelssohn Prelude and Fugue in E minor Op 35 No 1 Scriabin Selection of Preludes Op 11; Two Poems Op 32 Debussy Three Preludes ‘Volles’, ‘Le vent dans la plaine’, ‘Minstrels’ Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues (selection) No series on fugue and flight would be complete without a nod to some of the greatest fugal keyboard writing of the 20 th century — Shostakovich’s Preludes and Fugues. Intensely personal and uncompromisingly honest, this is music in which Shostakovich bears his soul. Powerhouse playing is needed and, for this, we turn to the Russian virtuoso pianist Mikhail Kazakevich. A Romantic opener from Mendelssohn and a foray through the keys of some of Scriabin’s Preludes lead into some brilliantly atmospheric pieces by Debussy which dance around the idea of flight, from the feather-light movement of the sails of little boats in a harbour to the playful breeze that blows over the plains. From his first symphony, written at the tender age of eight, to one of his most buoyant, carefree symphonies and his final instrumental work, the poignant Clarinet Concerto, Mozart gives us music of grace, melancholic beauty and intimacy. JENNIFER PIKE PLAYS ELGAR’S VIOLIN CONCERTO Bristol Classical Players Tom Gauterin conductor Jennifer Pike violin Elgar Introduction and Allegro Vaughan Williams Symphony No 5 Elgar Violin Concerto Britain’s best young violinist performs Elgar’s magnificent Violin Concerto! Thought to have been inspired by an affair with a close friend, the concerto contains some of Elgar’s most passionate and nostalgic music. Jennifer Pike, BBC Young Musician of the Year 2002, follows in a long line of distinguished violinists to have played the piece, including Yehudi Menuhin (conducted by Elgar himself), Albert Sammons and, more recently, Nigel Kennedy. This beautiful and deeply personal work follows two more English masterpieces: Elgar’s vigorous showpiece for strings, and Vaughan Williams’s serene 5th Symphony.

MUSIC OF THE ROMANTICS — I N 50 MINUTES with Jonathan James Composers of the nineteenth century didn’t hold back. Why have forty players in your orchestra when you could have a hundred? Their music aimed straight for the heart, often inspired by vivid stories and tales of love lost. In all the arts, the Romantics were a colourful bunch, driven by lofty ideals and occasionally bitter arguments. This talk will take you from the made-for-salon song cycles of Schubert to the epic operas of Wagner, and from the light touch of Mendelssohn to the soul-searching of Mahler, pausing for breath for some of the most beautiful solo piano music ever penned. jonathanjamesmusic.com Promoted by St George’s Bristol

This mature work, both symphonic in its scale and refined in its chamber music style of instrumental writing, is framed by works of precocious composers near the beginnings of their careers. Mozart’s overture Il Re Pastore is the curtain-raiser and Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony concludes the evening in which conductor Eduardo Portal, an emerging talent on the international concert scene, makes his debut with bhco. ‘What is so impressive about Bowes as a soloist is not just his technical assurance, his flawless intonation over the widest range, tonal and dynamic, but his natural feeling for warmly romantic expressiveness…’

Grammy-award nominee Avi Avital captures the atmosphere of early 20th century composers whose curiosity led them to trace their own musical roots and bring traditional melodies into their works. The programme intermingles folk-inspired ‘classical’ works by Bartok, de Falla and Bloch with traditional Georgian and Bulgarian folk music and captures the duality of Avital’s approach to music-making, building bridges between traditions. ‘Avi Avital’s programme of music for solo mandolin boldly bypasses the obvious with playing of sheer brilliance’ THE TELEGRAPH
