SCOTTISH CUP: HOCKEY

THE STORY SO FAR

1XI HOCKEY TEAM

1st XI Scottish Cup Hockey In September, the 1st XI played away against Fettes College in the first round of the Scottish Cup and won on penalty strokes after a memorable 4-4 draw. The team were 1-0 down at half time, before falling 3-0 and 4-1 behind in the second half The girls produced a superb fight-back in the last 20 minutes, scoring three goals including the equaliser with just two minutes left. Kitty then made some great saves in the shoot-out while we scored four out of five penalties, showing nerves of steel!

The Quarter-Final brought a home game against George Watson’s College. The players were delighted to see a strong home support made up of parents, peers and teachers alike, but within the first three minutes GWC had been awarded a penalty corner which they successfully scored. The team did well to show resilience throughout this game and remained composed on the ball which allowed them to win a penalty corner of their own in the last five minutes of the match The ball was forced into the goal leaving the final score at 1-1 and penalty strokes to decide the winners. Once again Kitty made some great saves, allowing Honor to score the winning goal and start our celebrations!

The team will now play The Mary Erskine School in the Semi-Final in the New Year and once again all support would be greatly appreciated!

U15 HOCKEY TEAM

The U15 girls progress into the semi-finals of the Scottish Plate, following a great win against Glenalmond. After a nail-biting match, we scored in the final 3 minutes to draw 2-2 draw and went on to win in penalty strokes. We face Edinburgh Academy away, following the Christmas holidays.

NEW LOWER 5 COURSE

As part of the L5 National 5 PE course students have been learning about the menstrual cycle and how this impacts sporting performance, using period tracker apps and listening to podcasts. We have combined this with a fitness block at Synergy and learning how to fuel our bodie

DANCE IN CORE PE

To enhance the variety of core PE options offered to our L5-U6 classes, we partnered with Edinburgh Dance Academy who led a 3-week taster block on a variety of dance styles. The students enjoyed workshops in ballet, contemporary and commercial styles of dance. They learned new skills which they then put together to create a short dance in each style. They enjoyed trying something new and were inspired by experts in their field. We are looking forward to offering more taster blocks in core PE next term.

NATIONAL 5 PHYSICAL EDUCATION TRIP

In September our U5 National 5 and Advanced Higher pupils h go to to Inverclyde National Sports Centre. On day one the U5 and Advanced Higher students took part in a movement class, focussed on different strength building exercises followed by a pilates class. During the night time activity the Advanced Higher pupils were lucky enough to listen to a lecture from a psychologist from the University of the West of Scotland and the U5 pupils had a talk about Internat Miss Campbell.

On day 2 the U5’s competed in their triathlon where they ran a completed a 45minute spin class and then swam continuously for 20 minutes, this was gruelling but all pupils took part and showed amazing grit and determination. Whilst the U5’s participated in the triathlon the Adv collected data for their programmes in order to best inform their final projects.

On the last day both classes completed fitness testing during the morning before leaving to get back to school in the afternoon.

ORIENTEERING

We are delighted to bring orienteering back into the curriculum this year after a break due to COVID19 with our Primary 6s and certificate classes. So far P6P have enjoyed learning the basics of orienteering on site such as map orientation, learning map symbols and pacing. SPORTS LEADERS

Sports leaders is a really great opportunity to get a well-regarded qualification that has numerous of benefits. It is a great thing to have achieved if you are ever wanting to work with children or show that you can be a leader. We recently led the S3 East District Tournament where we worked together throughout the day. We split into differe roles such as time keeper, welcome person, score board changer, runners and score keepers. Despite a few hiccups we managed to get the day completed without any major issues. It was challenging but enjoyable and it taught every sports leader valuable lessons about leading and organisation.

HIGH LIGHTS

L5 HOCKEY

The team has really come together this term playing better and better as the weeks have gone on. We have had some fantastic wins against Dollar, Glenalmond, Kilgraston and the team had a very good day at the S3 East District tournament, progressing to the semi-finals, and narrowly losing out on sudden death penalties to Heriots.

One of our best performances was in the cup game against Edinburgh Academy where we had all the pressure but ended up losing against the run of play. Special mention should go to our goalie Mary who has had some outstanding performances and has saved the team so many times.

Looking forward to seeing what we can do in the next part of the season Izzy (L5)

U-13 FETTES TOURNAMENT

This is always a very competitive tournam and it is good to play a mix of different schools. This year we were placed in a po with five other teams. The group stages a traditionally close, and this year was no different. We managed to beat Strathallan, Fettes and Loretto scoring a total of 5 goals. We had one 0-0 draw against Cargilfield and a 1-0 loss to George Watsons. The group was incredibly tight with three teams tied with 13 points, as we had scored 5 and only conceded 1, we were placed winners of the section. We then faced Dollar in the semi-final. We started brightly, controlling play well and opening up space on the right, where our first goal game from. Not long after we used the right again and finished strongly with a lovely accurate shot. Winning 20 meant we faced MES in the final, an exact copy of last year's tournament. We knew how strong this team were so everyone was focused on limiting any unforced errors and denying them time on the ball. The first half was 0-0 and still all to play for in the final half, unfortunately we conceded late on in the half after a scramble in front of goal. We lost the final 1-0. Runners-up for the second year was a great achievement a great end to a busy afternoon.

HIGH LIGHTS

ESMS P7 HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

The Remove hockey team had a successful tournament at MES last month. They finished second in their group and progressed through to the semi-finals of the plate losing 2-1 to Heriots. The girls finished with a win against Dollar to finish 3rd overall in the plate competition.

EPSSA P7 NETBALL WINTER CUP

Congratulations to the Remove Netball team, winning the EPSSA P7 Netball Winter Cup Competition. They finished top of their pool after beating Cramond Primary, Corstorphine Primary and St Ninian’s Primary. Next up was the semi-final where we faced Erskine Stewarts Melville Schools. With fast play and outstanding teamwork, we won 9-1. We were happy to reach the final but had to maintain our concentration against a particularly good Edinburgh Academy team. After 6 minutes of play we settled our nerves and scored two goals in quick succession. We were all relieved to hear the final whistle and enjoyed celebrating the final win. Well done to all the players!

NEW FRIENDS

This term we were very excited to have three touring schools visiting St George's. Repton School all the way from Dubai, played netball against our L5 and L4 teams. Afterwards we enjoyed pizza and chatted about life in Scotland and Dubai. Next to visit was Ashville College, playing against our P6, Remove and L4 Hockey clubs.

A few weeks later, Lower 4 hockey team hosted Giggleswick School. After a great competitive match the two teams enjoyed a lovely meal and stacks in the pavilion. The players enjoyed playing against different schools and made new friends. Haste Ye Back!

1XIHOCKEY NETHERLANDSTOUR

During October half-term the 1st and 2nd XI Hockey squads went on a much-anticipated hockey tour to Utrecht in the Netherlands. We played fixtures against 3 local teams and had 2 training sessions with the coaches of Kampong Hockey Club. It was an amazing experience that we all will treasure forever. The playing standard was so high pushing us to play our best hockey.

On our first day we played a game straight away against Beverwijk Hockey Club, Overbos. For many of the girls it was a first experience of playing a full 70-minute match in a different country. After the game, the team enjoyed a meal with the opposition, before checking in to our lovely hostel in the centre of Utrecht. On the first night we got the chance to eat out at a local restaurant and some free time to explore. It was such a great location and allowed us to have visits to the ice cream shop, vintage clothes stores and walks along the canal during our stay.

On our second day we had our first training session at Kampong Hockey Club. It was such an amazing campus with a total of 8 hockey pitches and many football pitches as well. The coaches were so encouraging and enthusiastic - we were all so amazed and energised with how passionate they were about coaching hockey. In the afternoon we played our second matches against Spitsbergen Veenendaal. These games were tough after our morning session but both teams stayed positive and played with intensity and drive.

On our third day we had a second session with Kampong Hockey Club. This training session was one of the best sessions a lot of us had ever done and we took what we learnt into all future hockey training and matches. After the session we had lunch at the hockey club and were surrounded by the Dutch National Team which was really cool. Later on that day we played our final fixtures against Fletiomare Hockey Club. Despite two more losses against strong opposition, we played some of our best hockey and had the unusual highlight of an escaped, friendly dog stopping play in the 1st XI game. After the match we sat down and had dinner with our hosts. They were all so nice and we made some really good friends in the short time we spent with them.

On the way back to the airport we stopped off at Amsterdam city centre to have a quick look around, allowing us to shop, get traditional pancakes and walk around the city centre freely. It was so nice seeing Amsterdam before travelling back home!

Overall the trip was a major success. Both the 1st and 2nd XI had some great team bonding and played some high-level hockey against very good teams. It was amazing to experience a trip like this having missed out on other opportunities due to Covid-19, especially for Upper 6. The whole trip allowed us to experience a different playing style, longer games and a look into how big Hockey is in highlights from 2022.

Thank You

This season the sport at St Georges has been amazing! Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed training and matches, with many successes to go with it. But it is not just the pupils that we should be celebrating, there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes that allow the sport to run smoothly and successfully Tony and the Kitchen staff have kept us all fuelled, from providing packed lunches and snacks to muchappreciated bacon rolls every Saturday morning. The facilities team have made sure that we all get to our matches on time and safely in the minibus, putting up with our awful music and getting everyone to where they need to be. Not to mention getting up every morning to fix the pitches after the badgers dig holes all night. And Ms Patterson, who washes the bibs every week making sure they are fresh and odour-free, so we can focus on training hard So much work goes in behind the scenes, and from all of the pupils, we say a big thank you for making everything happen. We also want to say a huge thank you to all of the PE Staff and external coaches who have stayed out through snow, wind and rain to allow us to train and reach our maximum potential and teams and individuals, and to the parents, who drive us to train and give up there Saturday mornings to watch us play. THANK YOU!
