The Steve Prescott Foundation (SPF) is a registered charity and is the legacy of Steve Prescott MBE who passed away in November 2013. Steve played rugby league for St Helens, Hull FC, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and was a Great Britain and Ireland international before a knee injury prematurely ended his career. Steve was diagnosed with a rare abdominal cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei in 2006 and formed the SPF to raise funds and raise awareness for Try Assist, formerly The Rugby League Benevolent Fund and the Christie Hospital in Manchester. He undertook many physically and mentally exhausting challenges during his illness to raise funds. Steve underwent a pioneering multi visceral transplant with the small bowel, pancreas, duodenum and abdominal wall included at the Oxford Transplant Unit and although this eradicated the cancer Steve passed away a few weeks later. In September 2015 the inaugural St Helens Triathlon took place. It was always Steve’s wish to hold this event and his wish become a reality. The Triathlon was attended by Claire Place who was diagnosed with pseudomyxoma four years ago and underwent multi-organ transplant surgery in 2015. Claire has benefitted from the lessons learned from Steve’s experimental operation and is now able to eat and drink normally. In October 2015 a party of 38 volunteers climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in six days and also played the World’s highest altitude game of rugby league. Everyone who takes part in any challenge for the SPF is motivated by Steve’s mantra, ‘What the mind believes, the body achieves’. The SPF has raised over £940,000 since its inception in 2007 and it is expected that the million pound milestone will be reached in 2016. The SPF helps in the organisation of several local events including the annual GPW Recruitment St Helens 10k run and the Solar King Pride of St Helens Awards. Steve’s autobiography ‘One in a Million’ was released in the summer of 2014 with his wife Linzi completing the story of his life and describing his incredible courage. Steve Prescott continues to inspire a generation and the RFL honoured his contribution to rugby league by naming the annual Super League player of the year award the Steve Prescott Man of Steel award.
